Spine specialist, Dr. Victor Shu shares a story of getting a construction worker back on the job who had severe incapacitating lower back pain. Dr. Victor Shu graduated with top honors from Palmer College of Chiropractic West in 2002, and soon after began practicing chiropractic. As a teenager, Dr. Shu often experienced extreme back pain, which his family doctor labeled as "normal growing pains". It was not until college that Dr. Shu realized his pain was not normal, and he began researching for alternative medicine and therapies. A breakthrough happened when he visited a chiropractor, and experienced major improvement in his pain after just two sessions. That was the spark that ignited his passions for chiropractic care. When he is not helping his patients, Dr. Shu enjoys spending time outdoors, exercising, and volunteering in his community. SHOW NOTES Dr. Tom Fletcher shares some of his observations about hip pain in endurance populations. Runners, cyclists and triathletes will be interested in this podcast session. Tom and I met years ago, working at an Ironman Triathlon. He is a triathlon junkie himself and is a great example of a treating doctor who gets into the culture of his patients. He practice in Sandy UT, just outside of Salt Lake City. Some of the topics we go into are: Hip Flexor Tightness Upper Quad Tightness Muscle Strains Hip Impingement Hip Labrum Tears Corrective Exercise And what day is the best to have a long ride in Utah. I’ve known Dr. Tom for years. As you will be able to tell on the podcast we have fun chatting. Dr. Tom Fletcher’s Bio: Dr. Tom Fletcher was raised in the Salt Lake Valley with his two brothers by his parents. He attended Brighton high school where he was involved with Rugby and as many Lake Powell trips as possible. After high school Tom moved on to the University of Utah. While at the University of Utah, Tom met his wife Delilah and continued his love for team camaraderie and athletics. It was not till Tom had nagging rugby injuries in college that he then sought out chiropractic care. The rest, as they say, is history. Tom attended Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, California. While in California, Tom excelled in academics and patient care for a variety of conditions. He was able to further his education by attending post-graduate programs such as Active Release Technique, Graston Technique, and HandsOn Muscle Therapy. California also offered the unique opportunity for Tom to volunteer in many events as a student intern. These events included: Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, Cal Bearathon Triathlon, Bay Area 24-Hour Bike Race, Nami Walk for Multiple Sclerosis, Los Gatos Ballet, and many more. California also helped Tom develop his love for triathlon. During his first race he thought his lungs were going to explode as he climbed the Berkeley hills. Since then Tom has tried to compete in as many races as time allows. Races such as Stanford Treeathlon, Cal-Poly Triathlon, Wildflower Triathlon, Cal Bearathon, and the San Francisco Marathon to name a few. Upon returning to Utah Tom has continued his athletic and post-graduate academic goals by working with chiropractic mentors to improve his skills in patient-based care. Tom has also had the unique opportunity to work with fellow Ironman triathlon doctors. One of Tom’s proudest accomplishments is being on staff with fellow IRONMAN doctors at the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, IRONMAN Coeur D’Alene, and IRONMAN Arizona. Mentors don't often walk up to you and offer their time and expertise. Guest Joey Glenn learned early on that when you are passionate about something and find someone who has been on the same path before you – make the ask! For Joey, that meant contacting the authors of a book that changed his life -- which turned into an internship that changed his life even more! In this episode of The Uncommon Life Project podcast, Joey Glenn talks about entrepreneurship, life/work balance and mentorship. He shares how the listeners can find a mentor and be a mentor. Both roles have been instrumental in Joey's life and as a result of both, he and his family have reaped rewards many times over. Hear about how Joey shaped his plan in college, how plans got altered by that book, and how having a plan plus a little bit of flexibility can be just the right combination when opportunity comes knocking. It also pays to do some knocking at opportunity's door yourself. Joey is a Sports Chiropractor and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. After obtaining his Bachelor's Degree in Health Sciences from the University of Iowa, Joey had an opportunity to work with Core Performance/Athlete's Performance™ in Los Angeles, California helping everyday people and professional athletes reach their highest athletic potential. Joey continued his education at Palmer College of Chiropractic West and earned his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree and Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification. Joey worked for the Martinez Veterans Administration Hospital, treating our nation's heroes and completed his preceptorship treating professional athletes and weekend warriors alike at Water and Sport Physical Therapy in San Diego. After developing a passion for Olympic weightlifting, Joey obtained his USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Coach certification. Joey is ecstatic to return to the Midwest and share his knowledge of health, movement and athletic development in his home state. Joey is married to his lovely wife, Hannah and is the father of three children under 3 and looking forward to adopting a fourth child from Africa by the end of 2018. What you'll learn about in this episode: When it comes to entrepreneurship, if you're not scared, you're not doing it big enough Especially at the beginning of a venture, life/work balance is a huge challenge. Don't let anyone tell you differently Finding great mentors does not happen every day – when you find them, don't be afraid to ask for their help in learning Be willing to chase what matters Mentors may come and go, but learning and sharing knowledge is a life-long pursuit Transfer of wealth is not all about money – wealth is in the drive and knowledge and motivation our parents and others demonstrate for us There will be moments when you are awake at 2:00 am wondering “what have I done?” Those moments are not the last word Residual income and multiple income streams are the best kinds of portfolio diversity to have. How to find and keep good talent in a competitive job market There is always room to push the needle, do things a bit differently and differentiate yourself in the marketplace

You need people that have already experienced what you're preparing for because they've seen the bigger picture and know how to help you." - Dr. Jordan Shallow "There's no such thing as discipline; there's just love. You'll naturally gravitate towards what you love to do more. That's the deeper core mission; to find something in this world that you care about so much. Find your passion and live out your dream." - Dr. Jordan Shallow "If you want to do something like lifting heavier weights; first start by learning about it. Just begin by learning something small about it today and then something else tomorrow. Then, try it out and maybe you'll be horrible at it, but then you'll be better at it the next day." - Dr. Jordan Jiunta "Take just half an hour out of your day to do something that's going to help you become stronger and live a longer life. In that sense, you're doing a selfish act for a very unselfish reason so that you can be there for your family and loved ones for many years to come." - Dr. Jordan Jiunta "The age, ability, reason, or lifestyle of each participant in a CrossFit class doesn't matter because it's not just about you. Rather, it's a collective group of people who are experiencing the same cycle of emotions in a class. That's what builds a community in the world of CrossFit." - Dr. Jordan Shallow Links From Today's Show: Dr. Jordan Shallow The Muscle Doc: Integrative Performance Therapy Instagram YouTube Twitter Dr. Jordan Jiunta The Functional Chiro Facebook Instagram Twitter Pre-Script Facebook Instagram YouTube The RX'D RADIO Podcast Instagram Boss Barbell Club Instagram Boss of Norgal Winter Championship February 24, 2018 Sign Up Dynamic Contraction Technique by Nic Bartolotta Biotensegrity Gluconeogenesis The Sports Genes by David Epstein Anatomy Trains by Tom Myers The Buckminster Fuller Institute Meet CrossFit's Fittest Man on Earth - Rich Froning WFR #140 Chris Kresser About Dr. Jordan Shallow Dr Jordan Shallow is a graduate of the 135th class of Palmer College of Chiropractic West, but his passion for human movement go far beyond the classroom. BREAKING NEWS-- AB2109, an alpha numerical confluence charged with controversy — a controversy that we have been following here on Spinal Column Radio. This is a bill that is traversing its way through the various hoops of the California Legislature — a bill that slaps the face of parents' right to make a medical decision on behalf of their child. If enacted into law, parents wishing to opt their children out of the state’s mandatory vaccination schedule for public and private school attendance — which current law allows them to do — will now have to have a conversation with a medical doctor about the pro’s and con’s of such a decision... and then must obtain that doctor’s cosignature should they still wish to decline the procedure. ChiropracTOR and Life College of Chiropractic West philosophy instructor Dr. Eric McKillican joins us on Spinal Column Radio to fill us in on the details that went on behind the doors of the June 27, 2012, California Senate Health Care Committee hearing on the bill. As one of two chiropractors in attendance, he tells us what happened and why actor-commedian, Rob Schneider, was there.
