Sporting KC Want to Add Players "All Over the Place"

For the Glory KC

For the Glory KC is back with the 118th episode of the show!Sporting Kansas City had a very busy week with two more preseason games under their belts. Before that theylocked down the signings of Designated Player Manu Garcia and Russian winger Shapi Suleymanov. Sheena and I discuss where they fit into the team and if it makes us more confident going into CONCACAF Champions Cup and the 2025 MLS season. After the second preseason game againstMinnesota United, theKC Soccer Journal asked Peter Vermes where he still wants to add to the roster."Honestly, all over the place," started Vermes. "As I've told you guys before, we're in an area of trying to rebuild this team. I would say that there is no position, nothing that is off limits. We're going to continue to add players and move this team around."If you missed the preseason action, the games are available to stream in their entirety on YouTube. TheNYCFC game ended in a0-0 draw in a game mostly played by the starters. And the backups faced starters in arough 6-0 loss against MNUFC. We give our thoughts on what the results mean (not much), who played where (a little more), injury updates and the general state of the team heading towards the final preseason game.Beyond the action in the games, there were a bunch of random Sporting KC tidbits that came out this week.Roger Espinoza was spotted coaching players in both preseason games. Tim Melia, Johnny Russell and Andreu Fontasall showed up to the Super Bowl. MLS also released a ton of new roster rules, expertly explained bySixOneFiveSoccer.com's Chris Ivey in thethread on BlueSky.Part of that layout of rules confirmed that Sporting KC, along with all the other MLS teams, cannot receive General Allocation Money (GAM) for the sale of a DP. That means Alan Pulido won't be adding any GAM to SKC's roster, but at least they got off that terrible salary and added Dejan Joveljic in his place. Speaking of Pulido, after missing a few games injured for Chivas, he playedand scored in his second appearance. We also talk about how young this team has become, a few more Peter Vermes quotes, how likely Messi is to play on February 18th at Children's Mercy Park and answer a really good listener question about developing and selling players. It's not until the Digital Crawl, but SKC II announced the preseason roster and KCSJ's Mike Kuhn gave aquick breakdown of those players, including a few familiar names. Finally, theKC Current had a relatively quiet week, but they did announce two closed door preseason games. First, they'll playRacing Louisville on February 23rd and theChicago Red Stars on March 2nd.In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few more topics, including:SKC II's US Open Cup announcement against the Des Moines MenaceJack Kortkamp got called up to the US U-17sAnd a ton of big MLS moves, including Cucho Hernandez leaving and Atlanta swinging bigHere is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times):More Sporting KC Signings - 8:00Two Preseason games for SKC - 18:24Random SKC Stories - 36:39How should Sporting KC handle youth development/sales - 52:49KC Current News - 1:00:53Digital Crawl - 1:12:10 As a special gift to For the Glory KC listeners and KC Soccer Journal readers, Backheeled dot com is giving away 30 days of their amazing, independent American soccer coverage for free. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.  The Columbus Crew are on the verge of trading Christian Ramirez to the LA Galaxy for up to $500K in GAM. This is on the heels of selling Cucho Hernandez to La Liga. Who will play up top for Columbus. The Galaxy get their striker replacement after selling Dejan Jovelic to Sporting Kansas City. Orlando has acquired a new Designated Player to replace Facundo Torres, they've signed Croatian winger Marco Pašalić from HNK Rijeka. He has 5 caps for Croatia. Benjamin Rollheiser is a name to keep an eye on in MLS. Tom Bogert reports Dallas were interested but did not get a deal done for the Benfica-based, Argentine central midfielder.  The US Open Cup first-round pairings are set, lots of local and near local sides will be entering the tournament in this round in mid-March. The NWSL created a $5M "Restitution Fund" to compensate current or former players who have suffered from abuse while playing in the league. This is the result of the investigations initiated in 2021 that say multiple coaches dismissed or resign, along with the league commissioner's resignation.  Referee abuse and assault is a growing issue in the game. An Argentine top flight match was suspended due to an AR being struck with something from the crowd. The US Soccer Federation has updated its Referee Abuse Prevention Policy and it's a good step forward.  Get to know Damion Downs. The 20-year old striker for FC Köln in the German 2nd division has 9 goals and 5 assists in 21 games and should be on the radar for Mauricio Pochettino and the USMNT.  Results from yesterday: Club Leon take the top spot in Liga MX, Monterrey win at Forge FC in ConcaChampions, while Real Esteli of Nicaragua upset Tigres in the first leg but now have to defend a 1-0 lead in Monterrey in the second leg.  Newcastle advanced to the Carabao Cup Final and seek their first trophy in 56 years. They'll face either Tottenham, who have a 1-0 lead going into the second leg, or Liverpool, who have won 15 straight at Anfield. More Espresso tomorrow on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.

David Beckham's Inter Miami secured their latest piece of silverware on Wednesday night, with a 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew crowning them winners of the MLS Supporters' Shield. The win, powered by two goals from Lionel Messi and one from Luis Suárez, gave Miami the best regular-season record for the first time in the club's history. The Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team with the top record over the regular season, adds another trophy to Miami's collection after their Leagues Cup triumph earlier in the year. Beckham, the club's owner, paid tribute to the squad, highlighting Messi's contributions once again as the Argentine continued his dazzling form with two goals."So proud to see our players lift the Supporters' Shield after a great win in Columbus," Beckham wrote on Instagram. "Another amazing achievement in the history of this football club and so happy to bring this trophy to the best fans in the League. Now we go again and onto the next one."Messi opened the scoring late in the first half with a free-kick, followed by another goal just before halftime, giving Inter Miami a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break. However, the match quickly became a nail-biter when Columbus' Diego Rossi found the back of the net within a minute of the second half, narrowing the gap to 2-1.Three minutes later, Suárez restored Miami's two-goal cushion, netting his 18th goal of the season. But Columbus wasn't done yet. Cucho Hernandez converted a penalty just after the hour mark, bringing Columbus within one goal once more. However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Rudy Camacho was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.Columbus had one final chance to tie the game from the penalty spot, but Hernandez's second attempt from 12 yards went wide with just five minutes remaining. That miss sealed Miami's 3-2 victory and the Eastern Conference crown.Messi, ever focused, reminded everyone that there's still more to accomplish. "The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what's next," Messi said after the game. "The first round [of the playoffs] is three games, but then it's one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home."With two more regular-season matches against Toronto and New England ahead, Inter Miami is looking to maintain momentum heading into the playoffs, where the ultimate goal is to lift the MLS Cup in December.Despite their 3-2 win, Messi and his teammates weren't handed the trophy on the field. Instead, they reportedly celebrated privately in the locker room because the trophy was still in Columbus. The real complication stems from the fact that none of Miami's supporter groups are officially part of the Independent Supporters Council, the body that governs the Shield. Without formal ISC membership, Inter Miami's Supporters' Shield win can't be fully recognized yet. Four groups have applied to join, but their approval could take weeks, adding uncertainty to when the Shield will officially be theirs.Though they weren't presented the trophy after the Columbus win, Inter Miami may finally be able to showcase it to fans during their final home game of the season on October 20 against New England Revolution, assuming the ISC issue is resolved in time. For now, the club's claim to the Shield is in limbo, leaving fans eagerly waiting for a formal crowning momentUnlock an ad-free podcast experience with Caloroga Shark Media! 10 Things You Didn't Know About Bernardo Silva

Manchester City's season may have looked a whole lot different had things played out differently in the summer. Bernardo Silva was strongly linked with a move away from the club, as City successfully pursued Jack Grealish and unsuccessfully chased Harry Kane. In the end, Silva stayed where he was and the Portugal international has arguably been the team's standout player this season. His brace against Watford put City back on top of the Premier League on Saturday night. Bernardo Silva stood out once again, grabbing two goals after Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for Pep Guardiola's side. Cucho Hernandez pulled one back for Watford late on, but it was too little too late. Sterling's goal came just four minutes in. Bernardo Silva played a pass out to Phil Foden on the left-wing, which the Englishman then controlled before sending in a cross for Sterling to head home from close range. City doubled their lead in the 31st minute, as Ilkay Gundogan's shot was saved by Daniel Bachmann but fell at the feet of Bernardo Silva, who got away from William Troost-Ekong before managing to score from an acute angle. Just shy of the hour mark, Foden ran at Kiko Femenia and drilled a shot towards a goal that hit the post and went behind.

They've been very rare this season so a 2-1 win away at Southampton made for an extremely happy day - but it wasn't just because of the match. Jon and Mike went down to St Marys on the Junior Hornets bus with the legend, and still a force of nature well into her 80's, Ann Swanson.  After the midweek loss away at Wolves, the podcast starts with some reflections, but also some external reflections from Jacqui Oatley, who was commentating on the match. And of course they chat about Sunday's win, the Cucho Hernandez goals and a performance that we hope starts the run in for Watford and our Premier League survival.  THIS IS FROM THE ROOKERY END

Ben Aiton, James Batchelor & Mike Duffy review a thrilling 2-3 loss at Vicarage Road against Arsenal as Cucho Hernandez scored a stunning bicycle kick.

From The Rookery End (Watford FC)

It was a more enjoyable afternoon at Vicarage Road, with a superb Cucho Hernandez finish the undeniable highlight, but it wasn't enough to avoid an eighth straight home defeat for Watford. Jon, Jas and Mike gathered outside a cold Vicarage Road to discuss a game that may well have provided entertainment to any neutrals, but delivered another example of how costly mistakes can be for long suffering home fans. The boys work their way through the team as they run the rule over a performance that was better, but ultimately not enough. There is time, there is a chance, and while hope is fading fast, From the Rookery End will be with you every step of the way. Come on you ‘Orns.

A 3-1 win at Watford on Saturday – our seventh victory in a row in all competitions – saw us go top of the Premier League for the first time this season after Chelsea's defeat earlier in the day. Raheem Sterling headed home the opener and a Bernardo Silva double put us 3-0 up, before Cucho Hernandez's late goal reduced the deficit. A new club record was set. It was our 31st win of the calendar year, surpassing our previous record of 30, which we managed in both 2017 and 2019. After the game, we heard from Guardiola, Bernardo and Sterling – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Shaun Goater and Andy Morrison.
