Rencontre avec ce sextet d'Amsterdam qui ravive les groove de plus grand archipel de la planète Imaginez-vous avec moi, au cœur des Trans Musicales de Rennes, le hall vibrant d'excitation, les murs qui résonnent de l'énergie bouillonnante des festivaliers. C'était juste avant les vacances, et j'ai eu la chance d'assister à la toute première performance en France du groupe néerlandais Nusantara Beat ! Ce sextet basé à Amsterdam est bien plus qu'un simple groupe de musique, c'est une odyssée sonore qui nous emmène à travers les îles de l'archipel indonésien. Leur groove psychédélique funk rock des années 1970 puise également dans les riches traditions de Bali, de Java et de Sundan, portés notamment par le gamelan, cet ensemble instrumental caractéristique des orchestres folkloriques de l'archipel. Nusantara Beat a fusionné ces différentes influences pour créer une expérience musicale véritablement transcendante. Le groupe nous transporte dans un voyage musical à travers les âges d'or de la musique indonésienne, tout en conservant cette essence sonore des seventies. Cependant, ce n'est pas la première fois qu'un groupe néerlandais embrasse cette décennie musicale emblématique. Les membres de Nusantara Beat ont des pedigrees impressionnants, issus de formations telles que The Mysterons, Jungle By Night et Altin Gun. Avant leur concert très attendu dans la salle l'Ubu à Rennes, Nusantara Beat a eu la gentillesse de m'ouvrir les portes de leur univers sonore unique. Ils m'ont parlé de leur passion pour la musique indonésienne, de leur démarche artistique et de leur collaboration fructueuse avec le label suisse Bongo Joe Records, qui a déjà vu la sortie de deux EPs, et en ont profité pour me donner un avant-goût de leur futur album. This week, I'm honored to have Kaylor Glassman back on the show. As a reminder, I know Kaylor from DYF, the organization that runs camp in my neck of the woods in Northern California. She used to work there as the Director of Programs. Now, she's started her own business called Diabetes Support Partners, which provides support to people in the first year after a T1D diagnosis. Together, Kaylor and I are tackling a question that's written in by a mom whose 10-year-old T1D son is trying to use his diabetes to get out of school. We explore all the possibilities of what might be happening for him, including the chance of celiac disease or other medical conditions that might be causing the feelings of nausea he's complaining about. We also look at the possibility that this poor kiddo is struggling with some kind of anxiety that's keeping him from wanting to go to school. Maybe he's anxious about his out-of-range numbers? Or maybe he's just anxious about going to school? Or perhaps something is happening at home that's making him want to stay put? Or maybe diabetes at school feels too hard for him? Essentially, we're looking at how this mom will need to be a bit of a detective to figure out what is going on for her son since there could be a huge range of different issues that are causing him to want to avoid going to school. We also explore the challenge that this mom feels about holding the line and sending her son to school, even though he's saying he doesn't want to go. I talk about how the balance of parenting is about loving our children while making it clear where the limits are, even when it's hard to do that, as it is for this mom. Hope you enjoy the show!

I'm so lucky this week to have Kaylor Glassman on the show. I know Kaylor through DYF, the organization that runs a diabetes camp in Northern California; she used to be the program director there. Now she has a business called Diabetes Support Partners, which is specifically designed to help families with a newly diagnosed child. The question we're tackling is about T1D siblings and about how much diabetes support we parents can ask of them. The parent writing in has a newly diagnosed 6 year old and wants help with diabetes management from her 15-year-old daughter. Is okay to ask for that support? Kaylor and I look at some of the ways that it's challenging for siblings, especially in the first year after diagnosis. We talk about how siblings' feelings and needs often are overlooked and what a parent's responsibility is to notice and take care of that non-T1D child, even as they are challenged by the very steep learning curve of type 1.We also talk about:How to think about the care the sibling is providing — is it a regular gig or an occasional ask that's part of the normal help that family members provide each other? My special guest is Melina Palmer, CEO of The Brainy Business and the host of the Brainy Business Podcast. I am an avid listener of Melina's Brainy Business podcast. As a BE enthusiast and a podcaster, I find her guests and the way she organizes links and notes for each episode, very inspirational. I had to squeeze this one in before I go away for my birthday which happens to be Mardi Gras party/parade night on March 5th. I met this week's guests @tau0n at their first festival gig this year @please_dont_trip . .. I fell in love with Anais on the dance floor after she told me her duo was like a science experiment & then was wowed by their performance the following day. Traveling faster than the speed of light, Anais and Scott go by the moniker tau0n. Based in Los Angeles they began working together in 2018. They put out their first EP in 2019, which they followed up with a feature on Sacha Robotti's “Welcome to Slothacid” EP, collaborating on the track “Forget Tomorrow.” They've released subsequent EPs since and appeared in some notable live streams on Dirtybird, Desert Hearts and Space Taco during the COVID-19 pandemic. We had the pleasure of hosting our favorite social media tool Dash Hudson's first-ever Savvy: Visual Marketing Summit this month in New York City! Christine Vega is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS) Social Science and Comparative Education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She holds a Master of Education from the University of Utah's School of Education, Culture, and Society. Born and raised in Pacoima, she is proud mother-scholar-activist merging both academia, activism, and spirituality. During her pregnancy and the birth of her son, her research shifted towards Chicana Latina Ph.D. mother attrition and retention of maternal activism.  She is a founding mother of both Mothers of Color in Academia de UCLA and the Chicana M(other)work collective. Christine is an AAHHE and CDIP Fellow and has short stories, poetry and theoretical publications about birth, pregnancy, and ceremony in UCLA's Regeneracion Tlacuilolli and InterActions. She is currently on fellowship (DYF) completing her dissertation as a visiting community scholar at Denver University. She has worked as a GSR for the GSE&IS Equity and Diversity Committee and is a Teaching Associate for Cesar Chavez Department of Chicana/o Studies at UCLA.  This particular podcast is the second of an interconnected set of conversations with female scholars of color exploring tensions in the context of a series of books recently published that examine race and gender in higher education.  Christine is co-editor of and contributor to the recently published book, The Chicana Motherwork Anthology:  Because Without Morthers, There is No Revolution.  The anthology weaves together emerging scholarship and testimonios by and about self-identified Chicana and Women of Color mother-scholars, activists, and allies who center mothering as transformative labor through an intersectional lens. Contributors provide narratives that make feminized labor visible and that prioritize collective action and holistic healing for mother-scholars of color, their children, and their communities within and outside academia.  Ms. Vega is also a Visiting Community Scholar here at DU.

The 5th edition of the BPM series consisting of two very long podcasts will be made available all at once later this afternoon.  This has been a long and grueling summer and frankly, I need a break.  I don't have it in me to create my usual post. I've included the track listing for each set below, so you have a pretty good idea what's contained in each podcast. I plan on taking most of August off, though I may pop in later in the month with the 2003 Chrome Edition or maybe just the Mariah Diva Series I had previously promised.  I can't say for sure.  I'm starting to have some normalcy around the house as Rick's condition has improved markedly.  A couple more weeks of dialysis and he should be back at work, right around the time I have my operation. I hope everyone has enjoyed the summer mixes I've been putting out and you can expect more going into the fall, but with a more restrained release schedule.  I fully anticipate having the Fall Edition out sometime around Labor Day. Atlanta has brought back Pearl Days at Six Flags (Think of it like Gay Days at Disney) which is on September 11th - 13th and should be a lot of fun, assuming I'll be up and about at that time.  So make the best of the remaining weeks of summer and I'll soon be back in the saddle whipping it out!
