When he was still researching and teaching at university in Germany, Professor Hermann Simon undertook to study the landscape of market leaders in exports around the world and in different industries, with the goal of identifying the characteristics of the companies that managed to find their way into that selective group. What he discovered surprised him; it was not the giants he expected who occupied the top spots. It was, instead, predominately middle market companies who remained relatively unknown who were the clear leaders. Many of them came from Germany.  In this Tugboat Institute® talk, Professor Simon shares key learnings from his work on his subsequent book, Hidden Champions: Lessons from 500 of the World's Best Unknown Companies. The Hidden Champions are different from Evergreen® companies, but they share some important and interesting characteristics. Professor Simon went a step beyond simply articulating his theory on Hidden Champions. Following publication of the book, he left the university and founded his own company which, following the steps he outlined in the book, he has grown into a Hidden Champion itself. Listen to this talk, consider the characteristics of the Hidden Champions, and see if any of them might help your company.

In this episode, Frank emphasizes the importance of clear and effective writing for pricing professionals, offering techniques like the "10-10" and "Rule of 13" methods to structure writing efficiently. He highlights how good writing can influence decision-making within organizations, often reaching and persuading people beyond initial conversations. Additionally, he underscores the value of listening to customers and understanding their real needs, which can significantly enhance pricing strategies and company success.   Why you have to check out today's podcast: Discover practical writing tips and actionable strategies to help you organize and improve your writing, making it more persuasive and impactful. Learn how writing plays a crucial role in influencing and shifting thinking within organizations amplifying your message beyond one-on-one conversations. Gain insights on structuring effective communication, prioritizing the right information in your writing and focusing on making a single point effectively.    "Truly, honestly, listen to customers." - Frank Luby   Topics Covered: 01:33 - How he got into pricing 03:23 - What's his contribution in Hermann Simon's book on pricing 04:21 - Noting two challenging tasks that makes writing about pricing difficult 05:39 - Acknowledging the complexity of the term "value" in pricing 07:36 - Deciding which narrative perspective to use in writing between blogs and books 09:15 - An effective writing technique to engage readers 10:05 - What his role is at the upcoming PPS (Professional Pricing Society) conference 12:09 - Why a pricing director or manager should care about improving their writing skills, even if they feel confident writing emails 14:10 - How writing can have a greater influence than many people realize 15:46 - Sharing two key writing approaches to help people organize their thoughts effectively 18:50 - Comparing writing to architecture 20:03 - Explaining the "Rule of 13" method as a way to test whether a chapter idea can stand alone 21:21 - The concept of prioritizing writing tasks using the acronym "CSR”. 23:01 - Importance of understanding your audience, especially when trying to shift or replace existing strategies in pricing  25:53 - Introducing the 50/500 rule: Making a single, clear point in writing 27:31 - Frank's best pricing advice. 28:24 - Why businesses often don't listen to their customers, despite it being an obvious necessity   Key Takeaways: "I often make the analogy to writing an architecture. And you wouldn't want somebody building your house just by having a bunch of bricks and cement and two by fours delivered. You'd like to see a plan, you'd like to see what they're going to design. And it's hard to change things later on. So, that planning part, especially for a book, is immensely important." - Frank Luby "That's where this 13-method comes in where you can test some of those things that if you can't have those three supporting pieces, or three examples or three ways to elaborate on a particular point, that's your signal right off the bat that that might not carry a chapter." - Frank Luby "The other hint is prioritizing what you want to write about." - Frank Luby "We love simplification and we love to have simple answers and simple descriptions, and no segment of customers, or no individual customer, is really that simple. So, we pick up on the things that we can make easy groups out of and we tend to ignore the rest. And sometimes, the rest we're ignoring is really the vital part of the equation." - Frank Luby   People/Resources Mentioned: Hermann Simon: https://hermannsimon.com Price Management: Strategy, Analysis, Decision, Implementation: https://www.amazon.com/Price-Management-Strategy-Analysis-Implementation/dp/3319994557 Dow Jones: https://www.dowjones.com/about/ David Brooks: https://www.nytimes.com/column/david-brooks   Connect with Frank Luby: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/frank-luby-318220/   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

Leah Buley and Joe Natoli have teamed up to make something great (check out the reviews on Amazon!) even greater. How? Well, considering that The User Experience Team of One: A Research and Design Survival Guide was written more than a decade ago, it was time to revisit the content and make it even more relevant for today's UX teams. After all, times have changed. But the fundamental principles of the original book haven't changed. They are as solid today as they were 11 years ago. What has changed is that the methods have been adapted for the speed of change in today's businesses. Joe says it best: “These methods are shorter. They're simpler. They're more direct in a lot of ways, and they cut to the chase in a way that longer processes don't. I've met plenty of senior people who are throwing up their hands and going, ‘We're doing all the things. Why isn't this working?' And the truth is, they're kind of overworking and overthinking. Everything in this book is practical and direct and gets you from point A to B. I just don't think there's any better way to get there.” What You'll Learn from this Episode: - About Leah's experience as a solo UX practitioner and the inspiration behind the first edition of UX Team of One - How the UX field has changed over the past decade - How the second edition aims to provide comprehensive yet practical UX methods that can be applied in various organizational settings - About the shortcomings of UX boot camps and educational programs - A perspective that balances UX advocacy with business objectives and the reality of corporate politics - How to navigate and thrive in a UX career despite industry challenges, focusing on practical, adaptable methods and tools. The vast majority of businesses – the very backbone of the economic system – are derogatorily defined as small and medium enterprises by government statisticians. A better mental model is that they are the champions of value creation. Hermann Simon is a renowned management thinker and author, chairman of the consulting firm Simon-Kucher and the founder and leader of the research project he calls Hidden Champions. Hidden Champions uncovered the data demonstrating that – compared to the larger and more publicized companies of the major stock indexes like the S&P 500 - small and medium businesses are typically more profitable, more efficient (higher revenue per employee), faster growing, better at investing in and producing innovation, and better at making a return on that innovation, i.e. creating new value.      In this episode of the Road to Growth podcast, we are pleased to introduce you to Hermann Simon . Hermann Simon, PhD., is a world-renowned management thinker, consultant, pricing expert, entrepreneur and leading authority on the “hidden champions” business model. He is the founder and honorary chairman of Simon-Kucher & Partners, the world's leading price consultancy with over 1,700 employees and 42 offices worldwide. Simon is the author of 40 books in 30 different languages, including worldwide bestseller Hidden Champions, first published by Harvard Business School in 1996.       Since Simon's introduction of the term “Hidden Champion'' almost thirty years ago, business leaders have been fascinated with these 3,400 successful companies – roughly half of which are German – who, despite being midsize companies, often have global market shares of over 50 percent. These hidden champions are behind Germany's success in exports and a differentiator in how business is done in the United States. Simon's recent work focuses on how the United States and other countries can learn from Germany's hidden champions.      Simon continues to bring value to the marketing world through his writing, recentling publishing True Profit!: No Company Ever Went Broke Turning a Profit (Springer, July 2021). In True Profit! Simon brings clarity to the jungle of profits and balance sheets, shedding light on the performance of numerous companies and industries in an international comparison. He discusses the dilemma of why more than 80% of companies in the U.S. that have gone public have never turned a profit, and questions allegations of corporate greed – arguing that profit-making is ethical if achieved in a decent way.      Recently, Simon also released an autobiography, Many Worlds, One Life: A Remarkable Journey from Farmhouse to the Global Stage (Springer, March 2021), which highlights the influences on his remarkable journey from humble origins on a German farm to advising and sharing the stage with global leaders in industry, academia and politics. Many Worlds, One Life reveals unique insights into the man himself and the origins of his ideas on successful leadership and business strategy. Many Worlds, One Life has been published in English, German, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.      Simon's upcoming book, Hidden Champions in the Chinese Century: Ascent and Transformation (Springer, April 2022), is an in-depth exploration of the ever-changing operating conditions, as well as the greater uncertainty and volatility, that will define global business over the next 10 years—with a particular focus on China's impact. Whether a company is a “Hidden Champion” or aspires to be one, this newest release from Simon provides essential food for thought as executives and managers chart their course into the future.      Before committing himself to management consulting, Simon was a professor of business administration and marketing at the Universities of Mainz and Bielefeld. During his academic career, he was a visiting professor at Harvard Business School, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as INSEAD, London Business School and Keio University in Tokyo.

In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the CEO and Honorary Chairman of https://www.simon-kucher.com/en-us (Simon-Kucher & Partners), Hermann Simon. While Hermann was growing up, his father did not have an influence on the pricing of his goods. This is why he got into working with pricing and allowed him to create Simon-Kucher & Partners which now employs over 1,800 people globally as well as maintaining a revenue of 522 million dollars in the year 2021. Simon-Kucher & Partners is focused on pricing, gross, and profit consulting for their clients. A major point about pricing that Hermann explains to clients is the pricing value to the customer. Value and pricing are separate ideas that need to be balanced for the best outcome for the company as a whole. Another point Hermann makes is for businesses to avoid Marxist pricing. When businesses give a guarantee for their product or service it makes consumers more apt to pay higher prices as the guarantee increases the value the consumer places on it.  Hermann explains that profit is the cost of survival and it is a moral responsibility for the entrepreneur to make a profit otherwise the business may suffer as well as do damage to everyone involved. There are multiple costs that go into a business such as paying employees, satisfying vendors, interest, and taxes to name a few. Hermann explains that earning before interest or taxes is not true profit, he considers true profit to be net profit. There have been many fundamental ideas that Simon-Kucher & Partners has believed in but have not been able to implement until recently due to technological incapabilities. Globalization has been a fundamental idea that has grown for Simon-Kucher & Partners due to the increase in international trade. Simon-Kucher & Partners works within all industries, especially in Silicon Valley, as well as banks and telecommunication companies. Dynamic pricing refers to the value of pricing mixed with the basis of supply and demand. Hermann explains that dynamic pricing is influenced by technology and adjusts supply and demand better than a rigid system. Hermann advises, based on his book Hidden Champions in the Chinese Century: Ascent and Transformation, there are three pillars to the success of a business owner. The first pillar is the ambition to be the best in their market, the second pillar is utilizing focus, and the third pillar is to broadening their market through globalization.  Key Points from the Episode: The impact Hermann has in the world Key points clients are likely to hear  Why guarantees allow for the basis of pricing to change   Importance of true profit  The changes to Simon-Kucher & Partners over the last four decades Typical clients of Simon-Kucher & Partners  Dynamic Pricing  Hermann's insights from his book Hidden Champions in the Chinese Century: Ascent and Transformation About Hermann Simon: https://www.hermannsimon.com/ (Hermann Simon, PhD.), is a world-renowned management thinker, consultant, pricing expert, entrepreneur, and leading authority on the “hidden champions” business model. Do you aspire for your company to become a Hidden Champion? Hidden champions are what businessman and bestselling author, Hermann Simon, describes as medium-sized, unknown companies with annual revenues under $5 billion that have quietly, under the radar, become world market leaders in their respective industries. Having previously written about hidden champions in his bestselling book, Hidden Champions, Hermann now explores China's continued impact on the business world since its meteoric rise in the global business and economic sphere in recent years. While the main focus of Hermann's research is on companies in German-speaking countries, because they comprise 56% of the world's hidden champions, their success factors can be applied globally to any mid-sized companies as they strive to become global market leaders.“The takeaway is to go really deep, find something you can really be the best in the world, that will drive your profit margin. It will drive a strategic moat around your business. You can be world famous in your niche.”So, whether your company is a “Hidden Champion”, or aspires to be one, don't miss Hermann on this week's episode of The Melting Pot. On today's podcast:Hidden ChampionsThe hidden champion cultureChinese hidden championsThe problem with startupsMental globalisationLinks:Book - Hidden Champions in the Chinese CenturyTwitter – @HermannSimonLinkedIn – Hermann SimonWebsite – Hermann Simon

His most recent book is True Profit! No Company Ever Went Broke from Turning a Profit. His new book Hidden Champions in the Chinese Century: Ascent and Transformation will be published this spring.  Key Takeaways:What is a Hidden Champion?A Hidden Champion is a company that is one of the top three in its world market, has a revenue of less than 5 billion Euros, and is not known in the general public. They make up a large part of the economy. How is it possible that they are hidden? Why don't they come out and be globally known? It's often part of their culture. They don't want to attract the attention of their competitors. Often, they are suppliers contributing to complex products made by other more visible companies. What is the blueprint for success for these companies? The strategy is built on three pillars.Ambition to be the best: Analyze what you are really good at.Focus: Stay away from diversification. Focus on what you can do the best.Globalization: Expand regionally, and then internationally. What are the main things that cause champions to fail? Many are family companies that don't manage succession well. Technological breakthroughs come which they can't keep up with. What is it about Germany that fosters so many of these types of organizations?Historically, because Germany was made up of 23 monarchies and 2 republics, a businessman had to become international very quickly because of the proximity of the neighboring regions. It became "normal" to think internationally. The German vocational training system has young people work as apprentices in a company three days per week and attend vocational training two days per week. This fosters a great balance between practice and theory, creating worker competence.Recent books by Hermann SimonMany Worlds, One LifeHidden Champions in the Chinese CenturyContact Hermann SimonWebsite: https://hermannsimon.comEmail: hermann.simon@simon-kucher.comLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simonhermann/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hermannsimonFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/hermann.simon.50

What characterizes an exemplary leader? Does it have to mean being famous? Hermann Simon argues otherwise. He tackles what characterizes a leader - unity of purpose, the ambition to be the best in their own market, focus, and the ability to inspire others - and to him, he found those characteristics in hidden champions. Hermann Simon, PhD., is a world-renowned management thinker, consultant, pricing expert, entrepreneur, and leading authority on the “hidden champions” business model. He is the founder and honorary chairman of Simon-Kucher & Partners, the world's leading price consultancy with over 1,700 employees and 42 offices worldwide. Not wanting to have a boss above you is the ultimate motivation to becoming a leader. The journey to learning leadership truly begins during childhood. Hermann talks about writing a couple of books about the hidden champions who are mid-sized, unknown global market leaders. In the fundamentals, leadership does not change. However, we have to respond to the changes with the use of tools and cultivating concrete values.
