Mark interviews Emma Dhesi, a bestselling author and certified book coach who educates and inspires first-time authors to fulfil a calling and write their debut novel. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a personal update and word from this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by the patrons who support this podcast at https://patreon.com/starkreflections and https://buymeacoffee.com/markleslie. New content for patrons has dropped here. In the interview, Mark and Emma talk about: How Emma got started in writing as a child at school The waves of how that "itch" to write kept coming to Emma every 6 months or so The feeling of writing that first draft and the effective challenge it was for her Emma's first book THE DAY SHE CAME HOME and how it began as an exploration of post-partum depression The concept of how engaging in the creative life can provide that balance we need How it can look different depending on where on the creative journey we are, but the similarities The importance of trying new things, but then recognizing when it's not the right thing for us at that time in our journey Emma's decision to become an author coach and to help other writers like her The first book being important "evidence" that you can do it The value of even a little bit of positive encouragement Emma's focus on a VERY SPECIFIC demographic instead of trying to create a service to please everyone What Emma is working on now in her writing and in her coaching The online summit Emma is hosting in January 2025 (Be A Bestseller 6.0 - Back to Basics) And more . . . After the interview Mark reflects on the intrinsic satisfaction of completely that first novel, the importance of proving to yourself that you CAN do it, of trying new things (but being able to stop if that new thing is not for you), and the value of focusing in on a target audience. Indie publishing. Does that send shivers up your spine, or leave you buzzing with excitement? For author Emma Dhesi, it's definitely excitement. Becoming a self-published (also known as Indie) author is a fascinating process, and one that requires a lot of learning. But as Emma's published books show, it's one we can learn, and it gives us plenty of options and benefits that traditional publishing doesn't. In fact, Indie publishing might be YOUR perfect publishing path.

In this episode:Jo Bavington-Jones started writing her first novel when she was made redundant in 2016. This was the opportunity she'd been waiting for it to finally write her first novel, and she took it.She explains why she opted for a Hybrid publisher and how that publisher differs from indie publishing and vanity publishing. We go on to talk about why events, both in-person and online are so beneficial to spreading the word about your books, even if you find them terrifying!Jo shares that she finds live events terrifying, even now, but she absolutely believes they are the best way of connecting with readers and promoting her novels. To counter the nerves, Jo uses brown paper bags to stop herself from hyperventilating as well as essential oils and Rescue Remedy to help her stay calm. And, she says, once she's up and running at the event, her nerves calm down, she gets in the zone and has a great time.Jo explains how she finds the events and why, especially in the early days, it's a great idea to have a buddy go along with you, particularly if they're a writing friend. You can support one another. What she's discovered is that now she's been around for a while, people tend to come to her and ask her if she'd like to be on a podcast or talk at a book group or have a stall at a festival. But she had to put the groundwork initially, and that included using social media.Facebook and Instagram have been the best sites for Jo Bavington-Jones and she emphasises the importance of reposting the same things again and again. People won't get irritated by it (on average people need to see things 16 times before they take a look!)If you're curious to learn if attending events and networking that way is a good move for you, this episode is well worth a listen.Jo gives great ways to get started and manage those nerves!Connect with Jo:https://jobavingtonjones.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/JoBavingtonJones https://twitter.com/jbavingtonjones https://www.instagram.com/jobavingtonjonesauthor/ Links mentioned in the show:The Conrad PressJoanna PennIf you're a first-time author and need help with your manuscript, then The Story Builder is what you need. In this episode:Kathy Otten started writing stories when she was very small, but it wasn't until she became a mum and was nursing her children in the middle of the night that she discovered Harlequin romance books. She tried writing her own, but discovered it was harder than she thought. So, undaunted, she started taking classes and workshops, and kept on writing and little by little overtime she improved and started publishing short stories. It was her father who introduced her to the great Westerns writers, like Louis Lamour and Zane Grey, and it was this that cemented her love of historical romance. But she doesn't write only American West stories. Kathy Otten told me she sees the characters first and then follows the story, and one of her books is set in WWII.I ask Kathy about her working schedule and she explains she's a teaching assistant and so her writing must work around that. But in an ideal world, she works on her own fiction and research in the morning, and in the afternoon she works on her client's pages, for Kathy Otten is also a book coach.Pennwriters Inc is a writing group that started in Pennsylvania, USA but now is across many states. The organisation, and in particular their critique group, helped Kathy focus on areas of her work that needed help. Members read her work, recommended books and workshops and enabled Kathy to continue working on her craft in a supportive way.She tells me what she recommends you look for in a critique group and emphasises that the focus should be on the writing, not the person. As a way of paying forward the help she's received, Kathy now teaches writing to others and has held a lot of workshops for Pennwriters Inc conferences, her chapter of the RWA and Savvy Authors.Latterly she's become an accredited book coach and uses her skills to even greater effect by working closely with writers on their manuscripts over a longer period of time. The coaching, Kathy says, comes in two forms. It's either book coaching or author coaching. Both need help at different times of the process, and certainly that has been my own experience of both coaching and being coached! We talk about writer's block, what it is and how you can move past it. Often the problem lies with the plot or the character and once those issues are resolved, the rest falls into place. This is something Kathy can help with in her coaching role.We finish our conversation with Kathy telling me what she's working on at the moment and where you can find out more about her books and her coaching. I've been amazed by how many authors use non-traditional tools to improve their writing and writing mindset. So if you're curious, don't be embarrassed - you're in good company :) "If there's a book you want to read but it hasn't been written yet, you must write it." - Toni MorrisonMariëlle will take you through how to ask your deck questions and how to interpret the cards. She does emphasise that, like anything, interpreting the cards takes a bit of practice. Bonnie Wolkenstein's journey to writing was not a singular path. Having written throughout childhood, she wanted to study writing at college but was encouraged to take a more professional degree, and psychology beckoned. Since then, she has made her career as a clinical psychologist, while writing in her free time for the sheer joy of it.Bonnie is a wide reader and after taking the time to think about the sorts of stories she most enjoys writing, she realised it is internal stories. Stories that excavating what lies beneath. She uses her psychology training on her characters, asking them the same question she might a client, enabling her to delve deeper into their psyche and discover just how complex they are!We talk about how to submit poetry, and Bonnie says it's a numbers game. You must submit, submit, submit. After taking a lot of advice from other poets and writers, she realised she cannot take rejection personally. It is a part of the process. She uses the feedback she gets to revise her work, build her writing muscle, and resubmit. She recommends you start at the bottom of the ladder, and slowly make your way up the rungs. Don't start by submitting to the big journals like The Atlantic. We go on to talk about how she balances her work, family and her writing. Bonnie says she's happy to get the balance wrong because it's impossible to get it right all the time. And, she says, she's learned the magic of saying no. She recognises that there aren't enough hours in the day to do everything perfectly, and so is happy to be selective about what she says yes to.This includes saying no to the people in her life but saying it with love.Bonnie tells us about her year-long sabbatical in Spain and Mexico and shares why she decided to do it. We comment on how when you say yes to things, the universe opens up and opportunities present themselves. Her sabbatical wars a year of change, and a year to live a writer's life. She says it was a joy to wake up every day knowing she could write, could travel, and experience life at its fullest. So inspired was she by her year away that she accepted the challenge to host her own writing retreat in Guanajuato, Mexico. The retreat is entitled Writing From Our Depth and is an opportunity for attendees to dig into their own lives and writing and reach a new level of craft. If you want to listen to Bonnie speak her poem, Becoming Sepia, head on over to my Patreon page and become a member today.Links mentioned in episode:Guanajuato Writing Retreat 2021 – Guanajuato Writing Retreat 2021Bonnie H. In today's episode, we have Emma Dhesi from Scotland; she was a former secretary and actress for 10 years. Years later she does what she loves to do most and that's teaching others. By the age of eight, she's into writing and attended some writing workshops. Her college is exciting and that challenged her to write a textbook. She begins to draft and see if she can do it and enjoy the experience. Don't forget to check her out and her 30 Top Tips to Find Time and Confidence to Write Your First Novel!A historian woman called Elizabeth Costa who wrote a book called The Historian gave her a light bulb moment. The historian writer asked her, “How did you manage to write this? This amazing book! She replied, “I just had to ride horses”, so that's what Emma got to do. Because of that, she started writing and being consistent in building a routine for herself and made a transition.Finding time to write was a challenge for her in the beginning. She has to sit down for 20 minutes and fuel her mood. It is her dream and her heart to write, as she progressed she did more on writing until it became her regular routine. The more we do it, we are used to it easier and get things done. With this motivation, she was able to make and develop many words while writing.Since most things are new to her, it is hard to clear yourself and find time to write. It is really tough to do the writing while doing some housework. Not yet to mention a few stressors like fear and uncertainty. So, to get started, you need to start and build small in a minute as you progress in writing. Keep listening for her great tips!Support the show (http://www.thesavvyscribepodcast.com)
