How can architects redefine experience through storytelling and space? This week on Practice Disrupted, Evelyn Lee talks with Kate Aoki, architect, educator, and founding partner of Golden Egg Creative, to explore how designers can blend architecture, storytelling, and community to create immersive, intentional experiences. With a career path that's taken her through fine arts, museum design, architecture firms, and now entrepreneurship, Kate shares what it means to craft spaces not just for use, but for memory, meaning, and delight.Kate opens up about her nonlinear journey, starting with a degree in textile design, before eventually returning to her lifelong goal of becoming an architect. Along the way, she worked in galleries, lived abroad, and built a foundation in public and nonprofit spaces. Her deep love for fine art and interpretive design led her back to the Dallas Museum of Art as Head of Exhibition Design, fulfilling a long-held dream. But after four years, she realized the bureaucracy of nonprofit work wasn't a long-term fit. What came next was a leap into co-founding Golden Egg, a firm focused on designing transformative experiences rooted in cultural storytelling and visitor connection.Evelyn and Kate discuss what it takes to launch a niche practice, how to build authentic partnerships with architects and civic institutions, and why experience design is growing in relevance across sectors. Whether developing mobile exhibits for aerospace education or reimagining museum installations, Kate brings a holistic and thoughtful approach to every detail, from lighting and circulation to the words on the wall.“This felt like putting on a pair of shoes that fit perfectly. It's the kind of work I've always been meant to do - blending fine art, architecture, and storytelling into experiences that connect people to something larger than themselves.” – Kate AokiThe episode concludes with reflections on growth, creative courage, and how designers can prototype career pivots by following their curiosity and leaning into interdisciplinary collaboration.Guest:Kate Aoki, AIA, NOMA, is an architect and founding partner at Golden Egg Creative, a design firm specializing in exhibition and experience design. With a background in fine arts, architecture, and interpretive planning, Kate's work bridges storytelling, culture, and space. She previously served as Head of Exhibition Design at the Dallas Museum of Art and has over a decade of experience working across firms and institutions. Her practice centers on community engagement, accessible design, and building memorable experiences for public audiences. Is This Episode for You?This episode is for you if: ✅ You're a designer interested in museum, exhibition, or experience design ✅ You're navigating a nonlinear or interdisciplinary career path ✅ You want to integrate storytelling and interpretation into your design work ✅ You're thinking about starting a small practice aligned with your valuesWhat have you done to take action lately? What if temporary buildings could be as sustainable as permanent ones? In this episode, we talk with Thomas Hundt, co-founder of Jangled Nerves, about the sustainable future of exhibitions and architecture. Thomas shares fascinating stories, including the Mercedes-Benz Red Pavilion, where nearly all materials were reused or resold, making it a model of sustainability in temporary construction. He also explains how working under tight restrictions - like time and budget - can actually boost creativity, leading to some of his most innovative designs. Here's what you'll learn in this episode: The power of modular systems, where reusable building blocks create flexibility and reduce waste. How digital tools are transforming exhibitions, allowing for immersive experiences without the need for extensive physical builds. Whether you're into design, sustainability, or curious about how constraints spark creativity, this episode is packed with insights that will leave you thinking differently about temporary architecture.

Elaine Lustig Cohen got an unconventional start as a graphic designer. After deciding not to pursue a career in art education, she began working as an assistant to her first husband, noted modernist designer Alvin Lustig. Her early work in the industry was far from glamorous, as she was mostly doing paste-up and assembling Alvin's designs. She described her position as more of an “office slave”. As Alvin began to lose his sight due to complications with diabetes, he began to rely on Elaine and his other assistants more and more. When Alvin passed away, Elaine took over the business. Her first commission was to complete the design for signage of the Seagram building in NYC working with architects Philip Johnson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The success of this work turned into more commissions. She took on some of Alvin's other clients, leading to a close relationship with, and later marriage to Meridian books editor and founder Arthur Cohen. Elaine closed her studio in 1969 to focus on a career in art, but continued creating designs for Ex Libris, the antiquarian book business she started with Arthur, which imported rare books and documents of the European Avant Garde to America. Though she began her career with little formal training as a designer, Elaine designed over 150 book covers, a number of promotional and catalog designs for exhibitions, pioneered what she called Architectural Identification Design and has since had her work honored through many well-deserved exhibitions and awards.TIMELINE1927 – b 1927, Elaine Firstenberg1948 – Married Alvin Lustig1955 – Alvin Lustig Died1956 – Married Arthur Cohen (Meridian Books editor) 1969 – closed design studio to focus on art1972 – Started Ex Libris w/ Cohen1995 – retrospective at Cooper Hewitt curated by Ellen Lupton1998 -  Closed Ex Libris2011 – Awarded AIGA Medal2014 – P! show2015 – paintings shown at Philip Johnson's “Glass House”2016 – d 20162018  – Jewish Museum Show, exhibition of art and design workREFERENCEShttps://elainelustigcohen.com/Barron, M. This project preserved and re-imagined a dilapidated building in the heart of Philadelphia and owned by the University of the Arts. Currently, it is a gathering spot for artists to share ideas and redefine the city's urban landscape. It is a profound misconception of our profession that the designs which are often most celebrated are the ones that are the most expensive. Galia shares her opinion on this topic and discloses how art can be made accessible to anyone, regardless of net worth. We will also learn more about the foundations of Galia's architectural journey and explore how she has incorporated this theme of accessibility into her work. About Galia SolomonaGalia Solomona is an award-winning and internationally recognized architect. On 15 June 2019 the Museum of Modern Art in New York closed its doors ahead of a four month refurbishment and the final stage of a $400 million overhaul. When it re-opens its doors in October, MoMA will not only have reconfigured its galleries but also rehung the entire collection on show. In this special edition of In The Studio, Paul Kobrak follows Ramona Bronkar Bannayan, Senior Deputy Director of Exhibitions & Collections, and Lana Hum, Director of Exhibition Design & Production, as they oversee this epic feat of creativity and choreography. This time, instead of moving to a temporary space as they did for MoMA's last renovation 15 years ago, they are deinstalling and reinstalling nearly 170,000 square feet of gallery space in just under 4 months. Roughly 10,000 art moves are being undertaken between conservation, storage, and the galleries; and around 2,000 individual works of art are going into the frame shop - with 1,550 new frames having to be constructed. But it is not just the logistical nightmare that is keeping Ramona, Lana and the Museum’s curators and staff awake at night. With 40,000 square feet of additional space, as a result of expanding into a new residential skyscraper, they also aim to rethink the way the story of modern and contemporary art is presented to the public – balancing the presentation of Claude Monet’s crowd-pleasing Water Lilies and Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, with lesser known works covering the full range of MoMA’s massive collection, including photography, sound works, performance, moving image and art forms not yet imagined. With exclusive access over an eight month period, Paul Kobrak traces the team's progress as they prepare for the Museum’s closure and the subsequent re-opening on 21 October 2019. Presented by Paul Kobrak. Produced by Paul Kobrak , Ella-mai Robey and Emma Kingsley for the BBC World Service. Exhibition Design is a specific discipline requiring a balance between message and content, skills in spatial design, and clear communication of a narrative. Designing for temporary and permanent exhibitions requires different approaches, from something that is of the moment and perhaps can take some design risks, to an exhibition with lasting design quality that will still look good in 25 years time.
