In this episode of The CFO Playbook, David McClelland is joined by Marie Joyce, CFO and COO of NTR, the trailblazing renewable energy specialist to discuss their mission to advance sustainable infrastructure by investing in wind, solar, and energy storage assets across Europe. What exactly does it take to transform from toll roads to renewable energy? Marie reveals the incredible evolution of NTR, offering a rare glimpse into the strategic milestones that have defined the company, from its early investments in wind energy with Airtricity in 1999 to its current focus on wind, solar, and energy storage projects across Europe. We hear how NTR's diversification across various markets and technologies has cemented its leadership in the renewable energy sector. Marie also shines a light on the pivotal decisions that set NTR apart, such as the shift from a US-centric approach to capitalising on the stable European market. She recounts the company's transition to co-investing with institutional capital, a move that has significantly mitigated risk while expanding investment capabilities. Hear how advancements in technology have made renewable projects financially viable without government subsidies, and how strategic partnerships, such as with Legal & General Investment Management, have been instrumental in the company's growth. Beyond the financial strategy, Marie lifts the lid on the human element that drives NTR's success including initiatives to foster diversity and inclusion in the traditionally male-dominated sectors of engineering and finance. From flexible working arrangements to fertility leave, NTR's culture not only supports its workforce but also aligns with its ambitious climate goals. Learn more about your ad choices.

Rahul Bhusan established Rize ETF with Anthony Martin, Jason Kennard and Stuart Forbes after having worked together for many years at Canvas and, more recently, Legal & General Investment Management. The four-strong team has come to market with medical marijuana and robotics-focused funds, but where does it make sense to expand and where should product providers and – by extension – investors steer clear? In this discussion, Bhusan explains the rationale for going it alone and why there is a fear of oversaturation within several areas of the ETF industry.

How much money do you really need in retirement? Amid large amounts of confusion in the UK workforce, the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) might just have the answer. Leadership, strategy and culture are all critical when assessing a company – whether for future investment or perhaps if you’re considering a role there. But the one that always stands out to employees’ lived experiences is culture and yet is still seen as so elusive given it is embedded in unspoken behaviours, social patterns and mind-sets. This makes it hard for boards and would-be investors to assess, manage and measure. Difficult, but not impossible. This week, we talk to Clare Payn about her experience working with boards and fund managers about how she and the Investment Stewardship team understands corporate culture, the ways it can be measured, and how it can be successfully changed and developed over time. ·         Clare Payn, Senior Global ESG & Diversity Manager, LGIM ·         Mark Chappel, Senior Content Manager, LGIM We want to hear from you! So many of our conversations with investors about stewardship are about two key problems: how can we judge the impact of your actions and how can we compare your work with your competitors? With new expectations about how investment and stewardship are integrated across asset classes, tougher hurdles to become a signatory and publicly available reporting from 2021, investors can expect a lot more transparency and comparability in the future. Spending on cognitive and AI systems is forecast to grow from $12 billion in 2017 to $78 billion in 2022, according to IDC, and McKinsey projects that AI technologies are likely to increase global economic output by $13 trillion, or 16%, by 2030. For cutting-edge insight into these trends, we were joined for this podcast by Professor Wyatt Newman, one of the world’s foremost authorities on robotics who has worked on developing autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots for disaster response. The challenge for investors is to translate these exciting developments into strategies aligned with the growth of the AI and robotics industries. To explore these topics, we also heard from experts at ROBO Global® about how to identify and invest in the companies pioneering these technologies. ·         Professor Wyatt Newman, a leading researcher in the areas of mechatronics, robotics and computational intelligence ·         Jeremie Capron, Director of Research at ROBO Global® ·         Richard Lightbound, CEO - EMEA & Asia at ROBO Global® ·         Robert St George, Content Manager at LGIM We want to hear from you!
