Giles has been to see a Bob Vylan gig. Bob Vylan are a punk rap duo who hit the headlines when the BBC broadcast their set live from Glastonbury, during which they led a chant of ‘death death to the IDF.' Performing round the corner at the forum in Kentish Town Giles went to see the gig, the various protest and counter protest groups and to talk to some strangers. If PM Sir Keir Starmer really is under threat who else could fill his shoes – Davina McCall, the artist formerly known as Prince Andrew? There is upheaval at the BBC as the DG and head of news resign on the same day…will Giles be sending in his CV for either of the roles? Finally, ‘Flesh' by David Szalay wins the booker prize, what's it about? Tax rises! Cuts to everything! Here comes the pain! Seldom has a Budget been heralded with such dire warnings… if you believe the Toryform Press. But according to Giles Wilkes – Institute for Government fellow and former adviser to Vince Cable and Theresa May – Britain isn't in such a disastrous state after all. In a weirdly optimistic conversation he joins Andrew Harrison and Jonn Elledge to look at the real story of Britain's finances; why Brexit is an even bigger drag anchor than the Treasury will admit; and why the embattled Chancellor needs to stick to her course. ESCAPE ROUTES • Jonn has been watching The Celebrity Traitors, yes that again, do our panel ever watch anything else? • Giles recommends Wellington: The Iron Duke by Richard Holmes. • Andrew recommends the old school BBC adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with Alec Guinness. Chris Forsberg and Tom Giles react to another frustrating loss for the Celtics against the Magic. Boston worked all the way back from a 16-point first quarter deficit to take the lead in the fourth, but some huge mistakes by the team's younger players – plus questionable refereeing on Jaylen Brown – allowed Orlando to pull away late and secure the win in NBA Cup play, 123-110. 1:00- Giles' Headline: “Growing Pains Stunt Another Jaylen Gem”5:10- Forsberg's Headline: “Hey Referees, Grow Up!”15:05- Lightning Round Presented by 24 Auto Group WATCH every episode of the Celtics Talk podcast on YouTubeFollow NBC Sports Boston:NBCSportsBoston.comX @NBCScelticsFacebookInstagramTikTok Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Just over three months into his new role as leader of Braver Angels, we hear from CEO Maury Giles about his hopes, plans and goals for America's largest volunteer-led movement working to bridge partisan divides and disagree better for the common good.America has lost much of its civic muscle, and it's time to get it back, Maury tells our host, Richard Davies. Rising polarization, declining trust in public institutions and the media, the spread of misinformation, the longest-ever government shutdown, and recent political violence are all signs that something is deeply wrong with our public square."We're trying to help people understand first and foremost that the choice you have to make is that of personal agency: To say am I going to act or react?,” Maury says."In this country we all have the ability to express a point of view and to try to work to solve things, and we don't have to rely on our elected officials to do that. But we've lost sight of our civic muscle.”Maury Giles came to Braver Angels after a career in journalism, politics, market research, communications strategy, experience design, and business development. Richard asked him about the challenges and opportunities he faces as a bridge builder at a difficult time.We hear about the case for citizen-led solutions, and why the true remedy to our civic challenges isn't reaction, but action, with neighbors working with their neighbors across divisions and mistrust. Over the past sixteen months, “How Do We Fix It?” has published more than twenty episodes about the people, projects and ideas of Braver Angels. Find them at our website. Giles is still sleeping apart from Esther because of his snoring. But he is not fully reconciled to the new arrangement. The subject hit a nerve as many listeners have been in touch with ideas to improve the situation – from wired jaws, wedge pillows or intriguingly a trip to Newcastle. After Giles composes himself, he considers a few of the options. In more upbeat new Parisians are being offered the chance to win a burial spot next to the likes of Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison or Edith Piaf in the famous cemeteries of the Père-Lachaise, Montparnasse and Montmartre. So where would Giles and Esther like to be buried?Lastly, a new charge has started to appear on some restaurant bills – an admin charge. What is it, why is it there and does it mark the end of fine dining…? And as always please do get in touch: noidea@thetimes.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This pairing of stories linked to Mary Shelley's horror story Frankenstein was Richard's idea: in the last episode we looked at the four part 4th Doctor story from early 1976 and Season 13 - The Brain of Morbius, which we've paired this time with 2020's 13th Doctor outing The Haunting of Villa Diodati from Series 12. We'll decide whether these stories have animated us like a bolt of lightning or left us feeling like mouldering corpses. Joining Richard for the discussion are Gav, Giles and Paul. We recorded this episode in August; the first part came out in September and this part has taken until November; sorry for the wait. Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it, so we can build our listener base high for happiness. Richard's other podcast "If It's Hurting, It's not Working" is currently on hiatus, but it's a fun and informative look at work - why we work, how we work, and what makes a great job. And also what makes a great workplace, how to turn things round when we're not enjoying our work and, in the end, how we can all make our work better. Sixteen percent of UK couples sleep in separate bedrooms. (Giles knows because he asked Grok.)Esther and Giles have now joined that group as Giles' snoring has finally got too much for Esther. Is this a problem that listeners are familiar with…are their other causes for sleeping separately besides snoring? Government ministers have announced they will investigate the brightness of modern car headlights, about time to seems to be the response. But can these ministers be relied upon to do such research, given they don't appear capable of much else? A quick question – is it fair to dress dogs up on Halloween? And lastly, having used Grok Giles wonders what a Grok rival to Wikipedia might look and sound like. And as always please do get in touch: noidea@thetimes.com Hosted on Acast. Caro Giles is an award winning writer and author of two memoirs. Unschooled is about Caro's experience raising children who don't fit in to the school system. Forced to homeschool out of necessity rather than choice, Caro weaves in her own experiences as a teacher at both mainstream and specialist provisions to uncover what is an inadequate and chronically underfunded system that is failing so many children in this country. It's a truly beautiful book about making the most of a system virtually impossible to navigate if you don't fit into a neat little box. Caro talks about how the book has been received in mainstream media, using your voice to stand up for those whose lives are at the edges and just how on earth she managed to finish the book to such a tight deadline whilst caring and homeschooling full time. If you've ever been to the Portsmouth Halloween Parade, you know — it's one of the most connected nights in Portsmouth. People are a little kinder to each other, more curious, quicker to laugh and accommodate. It's so, so special. And this is just the beginning. From Monster Troupe to Thriller dancers, Mrs. Ropers, and countless imaginative costumes in between, creativity shines everywhere — inspiring even those who didn't expect to feel it. The night takes on a magical energy, a collective spirit we all help create, drawing us together in the most beautiful way. For years, I've wondered how this happens — how a volunteer-run, community-driven event flows so smoothly and joyfully. Why do even those of us who simply come to watch feel so deeply invested in its success? Amanda Giles gives her time each year to help make this incredible night come to life. In this episode, she shares her thoughts on where this energy comes from — and what it really takes to make the parade happen year after year. They say it's small groups of people who create real, meaningful change. To me, there's no better example of that than the Portsmouth Halloween Parade — a night filled with connection, creativity, love, joy, and community that truly changes the world, one October evening at a time. Listen in — and if you haven't been, come join us this year! Here is the website for the Portsmouth Halloween Parade!

We also broke down Brandon Reed vs Philippe Geyer that saw Brandan be able to win the match with a Rear-naked Choke after a phenomenal slide by duck under and back and then a second back later in the match, we discussed the speed that Reed has and how that has become a staple of the heavyweight divisions in the modern era.Recorded 10-12-2025

I recently started playing Padel...And like with all my new hobbies, I enjoy getting good gear.So after some research, I treated myself to a racket from the higher end of the market. Now, when I'm on the court playing and lose, I could (might) complain that my racket sucks. That it was "false advertising" because all the specs indicate that this is almost an unbeatable racket. But let's be honest, we both know that's probably not the case. It's far more likely that I just don't yet know how to use this new "tool" to its fullest potential. You may be surprised to learn that this is strikingly similar to what happens in many organizations. They invest in building a service design capability, but after a while, they complain that it's not delivering the game-changing results they hoped for.So, does service design suck?Well, according to the research our guest Giles Colborne has done, the answer is a definitive no. In fact, he found that companies with high design maturity grow at 9x times(!) the pace of everyone else. The problem, as Giles argues, isn't the tool. It's the interface between the design team and the rest of the business. It's like spending a small fortune on that pro-level racket, only to hold it upside down in the wrong hand, and then wonder why you're not winning any games. When organizations bring in service design without creating the right conditions for success, they end up frustrated and disillusioned. So, what can we do about it? The go-to response I often see in our field is that we tend to shout louder, to do a "roadshow" and "educate" the business on our value. But Giles explains why this is actually often the least effective approach. That's why in this episode, we explore how we can stop explaining the tool and start changing the way our organizations use it, making it easier for them to unlock its full potential. What's great about this is that it helps shift the perception of service design from an afterthought, a "nice-to-have" for keeping customers happy, to an engine for growth. And once that clicks, it becomes a whole different game. Now, I'm just hoping the same will be true for my padel skills...Enjoy the conversation and keep making a positive impact.Be well,~ Marc--- [ 1. On this OFAF track, Les Claypool ponders what one of his heroes might do in numerous situations around a trip to London in which the airline loses Les's luggage, he's without UK currency, but he gets to screen a film with George Martin in the room and parties with George's son Giles until Les's pal Jason pukes on someone. It's certainly not your standard Claypool lyrical fare! Tune in to learn a bit about George Martin and why LC might hold him in such high regard, as does most everyone else in the music industry. Giles and Esther had a lovely night out at the theatre, but they're suffering for it now. As the hang overs clear and King Charles requests Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson not to take part in Royal Christmas engagements they wonder which of your relatives would you like to disinvite to Christmas lunch? Perhaps the King should utter “Riddikulus!” a spell cast in Harry Potter when faced with a lurking pest. JK Rowling may be doing likewise as her public spat with Emma Watson has resurfaced. Do either deserve our sympathy? Stop the press! The British Museum is hosting its own version of The Met Ball…sort of. But who on earth would want to be first name on the guest list? And last but by no means least Esther tests Giles' fitness…but while he has a hangover. And as always please do get in touch especially if you wish to divulge which of your relatives, you'd like to not attend Christmas: noidea@thetimes.com Hosted on Acast.
This Week on Dopey! We are joined by Oro Recovery Medical Director - Dr. Jason Giles! We also read old comments and hear from a few dopes in the dopey nation. Then Dave interviews Dr. Giles—twice board-certified in addiction medicine (via ABAM then ABPM), previously board-certified in anesthesiology and pain medicine, and a recovering opioid addict. He grew up in Santa Monica with a severely alcoholic father, fell into the second-wave ska/mod scene (Vespa, sharkskin suits, amphetamines), dropped out of high school, then clawed his way through community college to Berkeley, volunteering at the Berkeley Free Clinic and falling in love with medicine. He explains anesthesia's demands (no pain, no memory; muscle relaxants; airway control), the human connection of pediatric anesthesia, and the hope-work of pain management. In 1999, curiosity and stress led him to divert fentanyl: he edited paper records, carried a 2 mL syringe for a month, then IV-used with sterile technique. After a six-week gap he used again, convincing himself he could “handle it.” Use escalated to daily “after work,” leaving him in daytime withdrawal. The department chair paged him about missing fentanyl; instead of punishment, he offered help and a path into California's 5-year diversion program (treatment, meetings, testing). Giles detoxed cold turkey, went to AA (first meeting mostly doctors), found he wasn't unique, and built long-term sobriety (nearly 26 years by his telling), learning service and vulnerability through treatment feedback groups. With sobriety he finished residency, married, had a son, worked in cardiac anesthesia and pain, and then moved into addiction treatment (Malibu), where his science and lived experience met the work. He and Dave range widely: purpose/mission as a recovery engine; Bill W., boomerangs and ants; truth-serum myths; Halsted (cocaine→heroin), Freud letters, Hitler's amphetamines/opioids (book Blitzed), kratom (mixed withdrawal profiles), benzos vs. opiates (benzo withdrawal = fear), intraoperative awareness & memory, Suboxone vs. abstinence (cast/training-wheels framing), fentanyl's dominance (counterfeit pills; heroin now rare), and whether fentanyl appears in non-opioid street drugs (he says he's seen it).
