I'm so excited to welcome Jake Brownstein to Roadcase this week!! Jake plays shredding guitar for the band Eggy, which has been lighting up stages, and turning on fans with their unique brand of what I like to call “collaborative rock.” Jake is a super thoughtful and humble artist, who seeks to find joy in the moment, and he talks to me about how being vulnerable and seeking to be true to oneself is the key to living authentically — in both the arts and in one's personal life. Together, we explore the origins of the band, and go deep into self-exploration and what it means to really make a difference in people's lives with music. This is a special interview with a unique artist, and Jake really brings it all for this amazing conversation.Show notes:For tour dates and more info on The Wood Brothers, click hereYou can find the book "Songwriters on Songwriting" here on Amazon-------------------------------Episode Chapters:00:00 Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg04:20 Introduction to Eggy and Their Journey07:19 The Importance of Long-Lasting Relationships in Music10:18 Growing Up Together: The Band's Origins13:21 The Evolution of Eggy: From High School to Professional16:29 The Role of Covers in Eggy's Music19:31 The Business of Music: Balancing Passion and Professionalism22:09 Collaborative Spirit: The Dynamics of Playing Together25:23 Performing with Friends: The Connection with Dogs28:20 Playing Jerry Garcia's Guitar: A Special Experience39:24 Finding Your Voice Through Music41:37 The Evolution of Waiting Game44:09 Embracing Vulnerability in Performance46:37 The Pressure of Legacy and Life's Work53:10 Connecting with Fans and Community01:00:10 Honoring a Friend Through Music01:05:37 The Art of Jamming and Live Performance01:14:40 The Journey Ahead for Eggy01:14:34 Episode Outro and Wrap-up with Host Josh Rosenberg--------------------------------------------Follow Roadcase on Instagram here: @RoadcasepodFor more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

I'm excited to welcome back Oliver Wood of The Wood Brothers as he makes his return to Roadcase for this week's episode. Oliver is an extraordinary artist with killer guitar chops and a mellow and intentional vibe that, dare I say, exudes Zen-like qualities. We talk about his life in music, songwriting, and that elusive goal of being and staying “in the moment.” Improv is a big part of Oliver's art, both in the studio and in a live performance setting, and staying grounded and open to possibilities is at the heart of it. He claims that “the best art happens by accident,” and he talks to me about how that mindset drives his creative direction. The Wood Brothers have a new album coming out August 1, Puff of Smoke, and are touring all over the country through the summer. Oliver's second solo album, Fat Cat Silhouette, is out there now for your listening pleasure — it's a phenomenal work of musical art. The Wood Brothers are one of my favorites bands, and this is a really awesome conversation with Oliver!! Episode 176 Chapter 35, Live Electronic Music— Historical Practices. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Let's get started with the listening guide to Chapter 35, Live Electronic Music— Historical Practices from my book Electronic and Experimental music. Karlheinz Stockhausen, “Kurzwellen” (1968), excerpt from Festival of Hits. Composed By, Mixed By, Electronics, Filters, Potentiometers, Karlheinz Stockhausen; Electronium, Harald Bojé; Tamtam, Alfred Alings, Rolf Gehlhaar; Piano, Aloys Kontarsky; Electric Viola, Johannes G. Fritsch. This is the opening of this long work, excerpted for this strange collection of greatest “hits” by Stockhausen (you had to be in 1970 to understand this). Kurzwellen is a piece where the musicians need to improvise and react to signals they receive on randomly tuned shortwave radios. This is from the Cologne recording made in the Rhenus studio in Godorf for the Cologne Radio (WDR, Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln) on the 8th and 9th of April 1969 (53'30), which was record 2 of the original 2-record set. By the way, this ensemble also featured the Electronium Pi, made by Hohner beginning in 1952. It was a monophonic, electronic keyboard instrument and was an add-on instrument for the piano mounted under the keyboard, which is the model used by Stockhausen. His keyboardist, while Harald Bojé used the accordion-like model. 06:19 01:14:56 6. The Music Improvisation Company, “Tuck” (1970) from The Music Improvisation Company. Electric Guitar, Derek Bailey; Live Electronics, Hugh Davies; Percussion, Jamie Muir; Soprano Saxophone, Evan Parker. 03:00 01:21:14 7. David Tudor, “Rainforest IV” (1973) from Rainforest IV. Composed in 1973 by David Tudor; performed by Composers Inside Electronics (David Tudor, Martin Kalve, Philip Edelstein, Ralph Jones, Bill Viola, John Driscoll). Recorded at the exhibition "Für Augen und Ohren - Von der Spieluhr zum akustischen (Environment (For eyes and ears - from the mechanical clock to the acoustic environment)" at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, January 1980. 25:12 01:24:24 8. Maryanne Amacher, “"Head Rhythm 1" And "Plaything 2" (1999) from Sound Characters (Making The Third Ear). Electroacoustic composer of sound installations, best known for her incorporation of otoacoustic emissions -- sounds that seem to be emanating from inside one's own head. This track plays with that concept and sets your brain up to experience itself, so to speak. 10:04 01:49:36 9. Caroline Park, “Grain 5” (2011) from Grain. This is a cassette release by Park, often known her for generative composition work and electronic improvisations based on parameters that she defines. Recorded, performed by Caroline Park. 09:05 01:59:32 10. Caterina Barbieri. “This Causes Consciousness To Fracture” (2017) from Patterns Of Consciousness. Italian composer and musician from Bologna. This album was created using analog synthesis. Barbieri has said, “In Patterns of Consciousness I was interested in exploring the power of sound on our consciousness. I wanted to explore how a pattern creates a certain state of consciousness and how the gradual transformation of that pattern can affect that state of consciousness. I believe that sound is a tool for the exploration, reconfiguration and expansion of human perceptions.” I find this to be in a similar psychological vein as the Amacher work also heard in this episode. 22:44 02:08:36 11. Sarah Davachi, “First Cadence” (2021) from Antiphonals. Composed, recorded, performed, Mellotron (bass flute, recorder, oboe), Tape Echo, Sarah Davachi. 05:48 02:31:20 12. Asha Tamirisa, “Live Performance,”(2023) at the Waterworks 2023: Festival of Experimental Sound. Laptop synthesis, snare drums, Asha Tamirisa. Soundtrack for a video recorded by Wenhua Shi & Nick Stevens, video editing by Nick Stevens, and audio recording and mixing, Matthew Azevedo. 25:10 02:37:02 Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. My Books/eBooks: Electronic and Experimental Music, sixth edition, Routledge 2020. Also, Sound Art: Concepts and Practices, first edition, Routledge 2022. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I talk again with my musical brother, the amazing Tim Hamilton. Tim's had such a rich and fascinating career that we absolutely needed to talk again. If you haven't heard the first interview with him, I encourage you to go back and listen. In this follow-up, Tim shares what life's been like recently, including the highs and challenges of a packed summer gig schedule. We dig into the evolution of country music, especially the return of more traditional sounds in the '90s, and Tim reflects on how crucial it is for a musician to have a signature sound. We also talk about his time playing in the house band at Cowboys in Kennesaw, Georgia—some great stories there—along with the memorable artists he worked with and the curveballs that come with live shows. From starstruck moments to behind-the-scenes stories about the camaraderie among musicians, Tim brings warmth, wisdom, and a lot of heart. We also reflect on the lessons we've learned from seasoned players, the changes in the Nashville scene, and just how much community and connection shape our lives in music.I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed catching up with Tim. This one's packed with stories, insights, and plenty of laughs.Thank you for listening! Americana Podcast explores the artists and ideas shaping American roots music, focusing this episode on the genre-defying Steve Poltz. Poltz is celebrated for his originality, blending tradition with unpredictability in a career that spans decades. Born in Nova Scotia and raised in Southern California, he first gained widespread attention as the co-writer of Jewel's hit You Were Meant for Me. However, his true impact lies in his continual reinvention and subversion of Americana norms. His work reflects the folk tradition's emphasis on storytelling and community, while also embracing humor, vulnerability, and improvisation. Poltz serves as a creative link between the West Coast's DIY folk-punk movement and the broader narrative tradition of American roots music. This episode examines how his artistic approach challenges expectations and keeps audiences engaged. Listeners are also invited to watch a live performance of You Were Meant for Me with the Robert Earl Keen Band on YouTube. I'm super excited to have Jeremy Kaplan on Roadcase for this week's episode. Jeremy plays keys in @dogsinapile, one of the most exciting jam bands on the scene today. I love dogs in general, and appropriately, Dogs In A Pile is one of my favorite bands out there today!!I spoke to Jeremy as the Dogs were coming off a four-show run in snowy Steamboat Springs, and we sit down to chat about everything from growing up hyper-focused on music (almost to a fault), to receiving a scholarship from Billy Joel's foundation to attend Long Island School for the Arts, and eventually ending up at Berklee School of Music. I talk to Jeremy about all things Dogs, about his (secret) superpower, and how everything he knows about life, he attributes to his love of music. Jeremy and I go deep down all the roads in this fun conversation!! Jeremy is a super-generous spirit — an open book — he's super thoughtful, and possesses an infectious love of what he does.
