• SUVs y Crossovers: Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne. • Furgonetas: Volkswagen Transporter T4. • Monovolúmenes: SEAT Alhambra, Volkswagen Sharan. • Deportivos: Audi TT, Volkswagen New Beetle RSi. The Volkswagen Atlas joined the VW roster for 2018 and gave the company the ever-important mid-size SUV. Expanding on the Atlas, Volkswagen added the Cross Sport variant of its MQB-based crossover, which put the company's hat in the ring of the crossover coupe argument. After five years on the road, Volkswagen overhauled both versions of the Atlas. While these updates do come with some interesting new hardware, there is one downside for some: Volkswagen ditched the VR6. That means powering every Atlas Cross Sport is the 2.0-liter EA888 Evo 4 mill, which shoves 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed transmission. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you along on a guided tour of the '24 Atlas Cross Sport and highlights some of his favorite features before taking you along on a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's Patrick Carone about the Atlas Cross Sport, crossover coupes, and more. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the Atlas Cross Sport Special

The iconic Toyota Land Cruiser makes a comeback for the 2024 model year, now in a more compact form reminiscent of the original 1958 version. While the '58 Land Cruiser lacked a hybrid powertrain, advanced driver assistance technologies, and a modern infotainment system, the essence of its rugged all-terrain capabilities remains unchanged in the all-new version. With us to tell all about the new vehicle is Kalifa Sprowl, Senior Series Planner, Large Trucks & SUVs for Toyota, an expert on the new Land Cruiser. Every 2024 Land Cruiser model comes with Toyota's turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, offering 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. This hybrid system pairs a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. The Land Cruiser's full-time four-wheel-drive system includes standard center and rear-locking differentials and an optional front stabilizer bar disconnect mechanism to enhance suspension flexibility. In the exclusive interview, Sprowl will share details about the vehicle, including thoughts on its various trim levels, specialized off-road gear, and even Sprowl's favorite feature. In our road test segment Host Jack Nerad and Co-Host Chris Teague will take long looks at two very different SUVs. The popular Subaru Crosstrek gets a number of revisions for the 2024 model year that enhance its already-solid value story. The subcompact crossover offers the same boxer engine as previous Crosstreks, but new camshafts and other revisions kick up peak torque and deliver it at lower engine revolutions. The difference isn't stunning, but it is an example of the vehicle's constant improvement. Another change is the decision to equip all Crosstreks with the Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission). It has been thoroughly revised to offer a wider ratio spread and revised manual-mode ratios in an effort to give the small SUV a more responsive driving feel. Making the CVT standard has another benefit as well. It prompted Subaru to also make EyeSight driver assist technology and Subaru SI-Drive driver-selectable powertrain management standard across the lineup. So how do these and other changes manifest themselves in the driving experience? Chris Teague will tell us all that and more in this episode. In our other road test this week, Jack Nerad took the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas SEL Premium R-Line on a road trip to the desert to determine the midsize SUV's ability to transport families safely, quietly, and conveniently. This year, VW changed the Atlas's powertrain, substituting a turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 269 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque for the previous four-cylinder and V6 engines. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front or all four wheels. While the first VW SUVs were generally too small for American tastes, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas doesn't make that mistake. It is one of the roomiest and most accommodating vehicles in its class. But one thing about the interior was entirely unexpected. Nerad will explain its pluses and minuses in the road test segment. In the news, a just-released J.D. Power study shows that electric vehicles are more affordable than ever. It also asks the question: where are the buyers? We'll have more on that. Nissan has introduced a new off-road version of its popular Rogue compact SUV, and we'll have all the details. A battle is looming over future vehicle emissions regulations as the state of Ohio has joined a suit against California's regulations. And a recent Supreme Court ruling could upend a variety of fuel economy, emissions and even safety regulations. Finally, we have another warning about a safety threat that could be right in front of you when you drive. Counterfeit airbag replacements are resulting in fatalities. We'll tell you how to avoid becoming a victim. So, there's plenty to talk about this week

The 2024 VW Atlas Cross Sport gets a big refresh. Especially being felt inside the midsize 5-passenger sport utility vehicle, behind the wheel, and within enhanced technology offerings.
Weird cars come and go, but the Unnamed Automotive Podcast is here forever! Or at least until the end of interesting cars in general. Speaking of which, the guys have some curious cars to talk about this week, starting with Benjamin's take on the new 2023 Toyota Crown. A sedan/sportback mix with a hybrid powertrain, this vehicle seems to combine the best elements of the ultra successful Camry and RAV4. But is that really the outcome? Benjamin has the whole scoop and a thesis about what kinda buyer Toyota is after with this four-door. Then Sami discusses the 2024 VW Atlas Cross Sport. Having driven the vehicle several years ago at it's debut, Sami is here to report that the Atlas has received significant updates that really bring the crossover into the top tier of the segment. With new packaging, equipment, and a refreshed style, Sami went from lukewarm to red hot on this German offering. Then the guys answer some questions about Netflix and Samis parenting journey. Thanks for listening!!
The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas enjoys a major refresh. And with a focus on the interior and creature comforts. It's easier to compare this VW to its luxury brand sibling - Audi.
Jill and Tom opened the showing quickly covering a number of topics including the demise of the Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 engine, the addition of a lower-priced base model to the Jeep Wagoneer lineup, and Tom's love/hate relationship with the newly updated 2024 Volkswagen Atlas midsize crossover. Jill reviewed the all-new Kia EV9 all-electric 3-row crossover, about which she has much good to share. Also, Tom is being shocked (actual electric shock) by accidentally touching McDonald's employees at the drive-thru. Strange? The hosts are joined in the second segment by Green Sense Radio host Robert Colangelo. Jill, Tom, and Robert discussed the strange sociopolitical forces at work keeping ethanol in America's gasoline. The discussion covered the benefits of ethanol, and the many drawbacks, including compromised food security. Robert also briefly discussed a future Green Sense podcast dealing with early climate-change research which went unreported by petroleum producers. How will you do on this week's quiz? Jill did very well, until the Kellog's-related bonus question. Remember to follow the Car Stuff Podcast on Facebook to keep up to date on new episodes, and find links to the stories being covered.
As the name implies, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is, well, grander than Highlander classic. There's more room, crisper design and with the Hybrid MAX powertrain, significantly more oomph. There's seating for up to 8, and for the first time, adults are okay to ride in the wayback. All that and the price premium is easy to swallow. Its strong competition to Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave, Nissan Pathfinder and Volkswagen Atlas. Tom Voelk travels to the Big Island of Hawaii to check out all three powertrains.
Join Ray Stevens, DriveChicago.com General Manager Mark Bilek and Chicago Auto Show Marketing Director Jim OBrill review the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, get details about the all-new 2024 Lincoln Nautilus and take a Quick Spin with Jill Ciminillo in the Volkswagen Atlas.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jill and Tom opened this week's show quickly covering a number of topics, including Jill's take on Toyota hybrid refinement, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) potentially inadequate use of crash-test dummies, and Tom's recent encounter with would-be carjackers. Jill also shared her take on the freshened-for-2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport midsize crossovers. In the second segment, Jill and Tom are joined by Cars.com Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Newman. Jennifer shared the fundamentals of Cars.com's 2023 American Made Index. Surprises include the dearth of American-brand products near the top of the list. Jennifer noted that the country of origin of drivetrain components, such as a vehicle's engine and transmission, can have a profound impact on a vehicle's placement on the list. Tesla's performance on the list was a surprise. Jennifer elected to join Jill for this week's quiz, which focused on new-car sales during the first half of 2023.
In this episode we are in Saugerties, New York, with Cameron Batten, Chief Communications Officer for Volkswagen North America and his German Shepherd, Atlas, for the first drive of the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport.
Kelly and Lizz are back on the mic with babes in tow and on the teet. Get ready for Lizz's birth story, a newborn report, and an update on how the mom ‘Carpool' is going for the St. Johns. CALLING ALL JAMES MAMAS: Kelly and Lizz are mixing it up! If you have a baby named James show up in the Carpool Podcast reviews and give your babe a shout out. Lizz's labor started out subtle, but had her panicking in a hurry—about her messy house of course. At a routine weekly appointment she found out she was already dilating, but wasn't having a stitch of contractions. The nurses were frankly no help in figuring out what was a big deal and how quickly to expect things to progress. Kelly votes for better delivery and a bit more sensitivity from the medical pros. Mattie was at work, so Mama Stoupe stepped in to keep Lizz company and later hosted the expecting couple for the night closer to the hospital. Lizz started having contractions throughout the next day while Mattie was at work and as they intensified they decided to head to the hospital. Spoiler alert: back labor ahead! Lizz opted for the epidural and pitocin and was cheered on by a birth team who said she'd have a quick 45 minutes of pushing before she met her baby. Not so! She finally made progress through back labor, epidural adjustments, and a variety of birthing positions, giving birth to baby James after 4 hours of pushing! Baby James was born 7lb 130z, 22 inches long, and is absolutely perfect. Her top two newborn baby products are the Copper Pearl Baby Gowns and Newton Bassinet. The first thing moms need postpartum is a ton of breastfeeding bras. After carjackers allegedly stole a pregnant Illinois mother's Volkswagen SUV earlier this month with her infant son inside, running her over in the process, local deputies said they immediately contacted the automaker so they could use its crash-response system to help locate the car via GPS. The automaker declined. The reason? The mother hadn't paid a bill, according to local authorities. The 34-year-old mother, who law enforcement officials haven't named, said she called the Lake County Sheriff's Office on Feb. 23 and told police that the accused thieves had taken her 2021 Volkswagen Atlas and that her infant son still in the back seat. In hopes of quickly tracking the vehicle down, detectives immediately contacted Car-Net, the automatic crash response system on the vehicle, the Lake County, Illinois, sheriff's office said in a report posted on Facebook. "Unfortunately, there was a delay, as Volkswagen Car-Net would not track the vehicle with the abducted child until they received payment to reactivate the tracking device in the stolen Volkswagen," the sheriff's office said.Detectives told the Chicago Sun-Times that Volkswagen Car-Net wanted $150 to restart the service because the mother hadn't made a recent payment. "Serious breach"Volkswagen told CBS MoneyWatch in a statement that it takes customer safety seriously and is "addressing the situation.""Volkswagen has a procedure in place with a third-party provider for Car-Net Support Services involving emergency requests from law enforcement," the German automaker said. "They have executed this process successfully in previous incidents. Unfortunately, in this instance, there was a serious breach of the process." After paying the balance on the mother's Car-Net service, police said they located the vehicle about 11 miles south of her home. The alleged car thieves escaped, but officers recovered the infant, who was unharmed, after the driver released him in a parking lot. The mother, who is six months pregnant, has a broken pelvis and a broken elbow, CBS Chicago reported. She is in a local hospital in serious, but stable, condition, authorities said. Volkswagen's midsize Atlas is a 3-row SUV. Seating up to 7 the 2023 Atlas is big inside. But it's not too big to easily drive. And yes, adults can make use of the third row of seating. Which is not the norm in the segment. ⇒ Our Southern California VW Dealer is Ontario Volkswagen 2023 Volkswagen Atlas Top-3: Styling Interior Technology New For 2023 Volkswagen Atlas The 2023 Volkswagen Atlas is being offered in five trims. Nearly all of them come standard with Volkswagen's Digitial Cockpit Pro. And that's with the 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen. Trims & Starting Prices So the five trims for the 2023 Atlas can be considered two different main trims with optional packages. For a 3-row midsize SUV that's a solid driver and sporty or classy looking no matter what. We think it's a great value regardless of the trim you select. 2023 VW Atlas Trims & MSRPs: SE $35,150 w/ Technology $39,320 SEL $44,940 R-Line Black $48,640 Premium R-Line $52,340 *All starting MSRPs We like how Volkswagen keeps the trim packages fairly tight in what each includes. You still have configuration options but they're pretty basic. For example, when configuring the Premium R-Line you can add captain seats, cargo bars on the roof, and a cargo box. Plus other similar options Engines, Transmissions & MPG The 2023 Atlas rolls with two different engines. Having driven both they each have benefits. So there's an inline 4-cylinder and a V6. First the inline 4-cylinder. It's a turbocharged 2.0-liter that puts out 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This feels like it could have slightly quicker off-the-line acceleration. And it gets slightly better gas mileage. Then there's the 3.6L 6-cylinder. Delivering 276 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. It's capable of towing more than double the weight of the 4-cylinder. But delivers slightly less fuel efficiency. Transmission Both engines are paired with a smooth shifting, and efficient, 8-speed automatic transmission. Your option in this category is whether to go with front-wheel-drive or Volkswagen's all-wheel drive. VW's all-wheel-drive system is called 4Motion. Fuel Economy Again, when it comes to fuel economy, there's only a slight difference. And how the MPG of the different drivetrains and engines breakdown. EPA Estimated MPG: 2.0L 4-cylinder FWD 21/23/25 4MotionD 20/22/24 3.6L 6-cylinder FWD 18/20/24 4Motion 10/20/23 *All city/combined/highway When it comes to curb weight for the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas, it depends on configuration. But with the 3.6L 6-cylinder, towing capacity jumps to 5,000 lbs. Up to 25 MPG What's 2023 Volkswagen Atlas Look Like? Volkswagen's Atlas is a great looking sport ute no matter which of the trim options you select. Sure the base model is more subdued. And the SEL R-Lines take it to the next level. But the lines of the SUV are sleek and bold from every angle. It's European-looking and undeniably Volkswagen branded. But a quick highway glance might leave you thinking you've spotted an Audi. Even with a steady push toward EVs, the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas continues to impress with new upgrades. It doesn't seem that long ago that the European carmaker was rolling out its very first 7-passenger Atlas. But the '22 Atlas marks the 5th model year for the first-generation midsize crossover SUV. ⇒iDriveSoCal's Exclusive Volkswagen Partner is Ontario Volkswagen! And to be clear, the Atlas is more crossover than SUV, albeit a highly capable one. Moreover, it's a big midsize. Big inside anyway. So big that the 3rd-row backseat is adequate for normal-size adults. Conversely, most midsize SUVs that offer third-row seating are only equipped to squeeze kids and very small adults in the back row. But that's not the case with Atlas. And that is why Interior Space heads my Top-3 favorites about the vehicle. 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Top-3: Interior space Technology Drive ⇒Continue reading below and click play to listen!⇐ 2022 VW Atlas SE trim New This Year For 2022 VW Atlas For 2022 Volkswagen Atlas gets a reconfigured model lineup. So no hugely major changes but some cool adjustments. And when you look at the lineup and the direction Volkswagen is taking it, the edits makes sense. First, VW's all-wheel drive known as 4MOTION is now standard on all SEL models. Along with that comes 20-inch machined wheels. Then optional with that is a black R-Line package. Moreover, R-Line is now standard on SEL Premium and includes 21-inch wheels. Additionally, Volkswagen's Digital Cockpit is standard across all Atlas trims. Finally, and speaking of trims, VW scales the options down a bit - you now have six to pick from. Trims And MSRPS So what are the six trim options you ask? They are as follows: 2022 VW Atlas Trims And MSRPs: SE $33,900 SE w/ Technology $38,070 SEL $43,670 SEL R-Line $46,820 SEL R-Line Black late availability SEL Premium R-Line $51,070 And note that the SEL R-Line Black is listed as late availability. That's all Volkswagen is telling us at this point. And a persistent chip shortage plus supply chain issues have plagued the car business for more than a year now. So we'll have to see what the definition of 'late availability' winds up being for the SEL R-Line Black. Engines, Transmission, and MPG No matter what trim you select for your 2022 VW Atlas, there are only two engines that you could wind up with. And both of these motors have been around the VW-sphere for a while. Both are reliable and quite similar performing - in my opinion. And I've driven both numerous times. Engines 2.0L Inline Turbocharged 4-cylinder - delivering 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. 3.6L V6 - delivering 276 hp and 266 pound-feet of torque. Transmission Either engine comes with the same 8-speed automatic transmission. And in both cases, the V6 or the turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, the transmission is geared effectively to maximize motor performance. At the same time, the transmission optimizes the fuel economy that Atlas delivers. So you're left with the option of 2WD or 4MOTION. And with the Volkswagen Atlas, 2WD is powered by the front wheels. My suggestion is to go with 4MOTION. Because fuel economy isn't that different. And your resale value on the vehicle should be higher. While the initial cost of the vehicle will also be a little higher, the pre-owned crossover SUV market tends to favor all-wheel drive. Gas Mileage When it comes to the MPG that '22 Atlas provides, you're in good shape. Because Atlas, while being a midsize vehicle, is a Volkswagen. And VW's are made sturdy - solid. But in doing so they tend to weigh a bit more than comparable vehicles. 2022 VW Atlas MPG est.: 2.0-Turbo 4-cylinder FWD 21/23/25 AWD 20/22/24 3.6L V6 FWD 18/20/24 AWD 17/19/23 *All city/combined/highway So as you can see by the above EPA estimated fuel economy br...

Why do we need them? What makes collaboration between educational institutions, public entities, and private companies so powerful and finding innovative, adaptive, and real-world solutions? This is the story of the University of Tennessee Research Park, and it's going to talk about that exact thing. So, welcome to the Research Park Chronicles with Rickey McCallum.Rickey McCallum: Hello and welcome to the very first episode of Research Park Chronicles. I'm your host Rickey McCallum and throughout this podcast, I'm going to take you on a journey through the gateway to collaboration. We're going to talk about why university research parks are so integral to innovation, how the UT Research Park came about here in Knoxville, Tennessee, and what it's already accomplished. And in future episodes, we'll dive in even more to future projects within the park, developments between Volkswagen, which is the power behind the research park in UT, and what research parks mean in the future of scientific discovery, technologies, economies, and consumers. But I'm getting ahead of myself here, so let's start from the beginning. I know you're all dying to know, “Rickey, what exactly is a research park, anyway?” Well, I'm glad you asked. University research parks are the physical locations developed and designed to foster an environment of collaboration between universities, the public and private sectors, and the federal research laboratories. In the case of the UT Research Park, the goal is simple: to become a bridge between science and technology companies and the best up-and-coming scientific minds at the University of Tennessee. These are places established to enable a free flow of ideas between R&D institutes, universities, and research labs in order to solve real-world problems with innovation and cutting-edge solutions. And Volkswagen, the powerhouse German car manufacturer known for leading the industry in innovative developments, wanted to create one right here in little old Knoxville, Tennessee. But why? The answer to that question lies 112 miles south of Knoxville. In 2008, Chattanooga, Tennessee, came into focus when VW chose that scenic southern city as the location of its first U.S. auto plant since the closure of the Westmoreland Assembly Plant in Pennsylvania back in 1988. Now, the Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly plant builds the US-specific VW Passat and the VW Atlas. With their own assembly plant located just over a hundred miles away, the well-established research-centric UT Knoxville at hand, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory just down the road, how could Knoxville not be the perfect location for researching composite materials?Of course, I say that as if it makes complete sense, but when I first began researching this podcast and reading about the UT Research Park, all I could think of is, why Knoxville and how did we get so lucky? But I had a conversation with my good friend of mine, Dr. Leon Tolbert, who works in the electrical engineering and computer science department at the University of Tennessee, and he gave me a little backstory that will put it all of this into perspective.Dr. Leon Tolbert: So, when Volkswagen first built their plant in Chattanooga, they came to the University of Tennessee—and that was probably more than 10 years ago—and wanted to engage the university because they were looking at hiring graduates of our university, they were looking at working with faculty, and they donated, I think, a pretty substantial sum of money at that time to fund research in engineering. And so, the College of Engineering then gave out grants to faculty who were doing work related to electric vehicles and, I believe, got a couple of those grants, and worked with students on things related to power electronics for electric vehicles. But then, I guess things just kind of coasted along there for a few years, and then, more recently, a couple of years ago, they approached again wanting deeper involvement, and came and looked at the work we were doing already related to electric vehicles, visited our department several times, and then approached us about establishing a Volkswagen fellowship for graduate students, and in that fellowship, they would hire the students to work full-time at Volkswagen while they were pursuing their PhD. And this kind of follows the model in Europe where a lot of the PhD students basically are full-time employees of companies, but they're pursuing a PhD, and they wanted to do something similar here at UT.Rickey McCallum: And they did just that. VW approached UT and created an incredible program for PhD students to work full time on research projects that directly impact real-world struggles. Now, when these students complete this program, they're going to be ready and have applicable real-world experience to show for all their hard work, and have a foundation of research already in place. So, Dr. Hendrik Mainka, project manager and team lead of UT's Innovation Hub, told us a little bit more about the PhD program.Dr. Hendrik Mainka: Yeah, I think that the PhD program probably is pretty unique for the US. I mean, we have a PhD program in Germany at our headquarters where, always, the PhD students are Volkswagen employees. I think that's a huge one, too, a lot of the PhD fellows here and in the US, so PhD fellows you will talk to later, they are all Volkswagen employees, and we're really working with them as our people to make sure we having this close connection, not only to the university, also for our students to really real-life problems, you know? You're working on a wireless power transfer, for example, that's something we want to see the next years being implemented in our cars. And so your PhD research really has a high impact. Same with the research on sizing to optimize our composite parts. That's really applied research on a PhD level, which really helps the company moving forward with the innovations, and also having the students working on real-life problems. I think that's really unique and hopefully, it's beneficial for both sides.Rickey McCallum: It all already sounds pretty great right? A world-renowned, industry-leading auto manufacturer choosing our Knoxville, Tennessee university to start exploring composite materials for more affordable, energy-efficient vehicles we can make right here in the same state.Yeah, it's really awesome, and it gets better. VW didn't just stop at the UT Research Park. In 2019 they announced that they wanted to use Knoxville as the site of their very first North American Innovation Hub. Now, in a partnership between Volkswagen, UT, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Innovation Hub will be an extension, or rather an expansion of the Research Park, and it will further develop research opportunities for UT doctoral students with a focus on electrical engineering and developing lighter components for composite materials. And those opportunities have already begun with the very first wave of doctoral fellows. William Henkin, a VW research fellow at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, gave us a little more insight on just how incredible this PhD program has already been.William Hankin: It's an incredible experience and the fact that I'm the first one kind of paving the way, trailblazing it makes me kind of smile to myself and, like I said, it's validation on everything I've done to this point. As a grad student, you don't necessarily get those feelings all the time, so you got to take advantage of it when you do. [laugh].Rickey McCallum: trailblazing. [laugh]. I like that. That's the perfect way to describe both the program in general and your research projects and goals. What is it specifically that you're focusing on in the Innovation Hub, William?William Hankin: Volkswagen is very interested in next-generation vehicles. And an extension of that is electrification and lightweighting. And so a lot of the work I'm doing is in the lightweighting aspect. And so I'm looking really at composite materials: how to make them stronger, more efficient, and how to implement them in automotive application. So, Department of Energy here in the East Tennessee area is huge. They have the National Transportation Research Center, and they work closely with University of Tennessee, Knoxville, so we have great supporting casts, academic, adjunct faculty, collaboration is prolific and Volkswagen really saw that as an opportunity to put down some roots in this area. And we're really the first generation of fellows here, but I expect this to grow, a lot.Rickey McCallum: and grow it most certainly will. So, this is VW is the very first North American Innovation Hub. And as I said, it means that Knoxville is going to be joining the ranks of Berlin, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo, renowned sites for establishing VW Innovation Hubs.It still sounds just a little too good to be true, or at least it did to me. So, I asked Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Tennessee rather bluntly, “What's up with that?”If you look at Volkswagen's global footprint, where the Innovation Hubs and their centers and stuff are located, Knoxville's not considered a Tel Aviv or a Tokyo type of location. And so I'm curious if you have any insight of what may have been their thought process, and why Knoxville? I mean, why move here to establish this Innovation Hub?Marc Gibson: Yeah, so that's a good question. I had the opportunity, actually, to visit their Tel Aviv hub last November and I was kind of wondering the same thing, to be honest. I was like, “That puts us in pretty, pretty prestigious company,” I was really excited about that. I had an opportunity to sit down with the folks in Tel Aviv and they outlined why they're there and what the motive was for Volkswagen to locate a hub in Tel Aviv. And certainly, it was around their innovation, their startup culture that they have there, so I knew right away, it was a little bit different why they were looking into Knoxville. I think they look at Knoxville as the future hub for materials and manufacturing. And I think there's a lot to be said, obviously, for the strengths that we have here. But I think they also looked at the vision that the University of Tennessee had and the relationship that we have with ORNL, and I think they really felt like we could move together. Together we can move a mountain and really create something special here.Rickey McCallum: Dr. Uday Vaidya, a Governor's Chair for Advanced Composites Manufacturing at UT followed that up.Dr. Uday Vaidya: as you know, the ecosystem here in Tennessee is very unique. We have a very large, signature flagship university, University of Tennessee, the world's largest DOE lab in terms of materials research, Oakridge Lab, just 20 miles away, the manufacturing demonstration facility at Oak Ridge, and the industry network, which combines along with IACMI which is, again, a very unique piece in this whole equation. So, the entrepreneurial aspect of it is almost natural in that because there are so many technologies that are at play, and a lot of the students and personnel work throughout, you know, in terms of progressing to a certain endpoint as part of their academic career, many of these students are extremely entrepreneurial already. But now that gives them a purpose and a real vision of where their business and entrepreneurial skills could get to. So, we have a number of such examples of students starting companies as part of their PhD or masters training, like the Innovation Crossroads program between Oak Ridge and UT makes a very good case for these students to get seed funding and going. So, the hub that you have here, or the Innovation Hub is a key part of the entire process because now that gives a real home to these kind of ideas to set up, whether it's a space, or an asset, or a process, or the infrastructure required for such a daunting step that they would take. So, such a thing is extremely easy because of operation like the Innovation Hub.So, I believe it should become a very natural relationship on multiple fronts. The technology is just one piece of it. I mean, you have the manufacturing side, you have the materials side, the electrification, battery, so many aspects of Volkswagen's interests which fall within that. But alongside, there's a huge need for the workforce development and then the training, not only at the PhD level but also all the way from the technician people on the shop floor. So, you need multiple points of engagement with the company. So, I think the vast range of programs that UT could offer, along with Oak Ridge and the ecosystem, will continue to engage VW in a continuous way. So, that will also then excite their supply chain, the tier suppliers, tier one, two, three. So, they will want to set up operations in the proximity. So, it has a cascading effect of benefit for sure.Rickey McCallum: A cascading effect. That's the perfect way to describe the blossoming partnership that just keeps going between UT and Volkswagen. And it's certainly cascaded into some wonderful research opportunities and projects. And since Dr. Hendrik Mainka has been there from just about the beginning of the cascade, we turned to him for a little more information on that partnership.Dr. Hendrik Mainka: The conversations, at least, I have been empowered, have started around about in 2015. I think everybody remembers when IACMI, the Composite Institute, was founded in Knoxville. Awesome event with President Obama on-site announcing the DOE-sponsored institute and, yeah, Volkswagen is proud to be a founding member of this Institute, which is basically led by University of Tennessee in Knoxville. And I think that's basically how everything started. And in the following years, we had several IACMI projects together with UT to develop lower-cost, high-speed manufacturing, really efficient method for automotive lightweight composites. Also looked at recycling processes with UT together and the last years. And I think, really, the highlight of this project is a Volkswagen Atlas liftgate. And I think that's pretty much how it began, and how we started our cooperation with UT. And finally, in 2015, we opened the Innovation Hub in Knoxville, which is another major milestone in this development. A big part of innovation is basically co-creation. So, if you're working with companies or experts from different fields, that basically creates a lot of innovation in the way that new ideas are trickling into your field of expertise, and we see that, for example, with some of the UT faculties where we combining fields like AI with material research, which is really kind of a new way to create innovations. Or when we're working with experts of your Carbon Renewable Center to create really innovative materials for automotive applications. We're working with producers of paper and plastics on the other side, and then combining that to awesome new products. I think that's really where you see innovation taking place. So, it's really the capability of having all these different people available for Volkswagen to work with and have this cooperation with UT. I think that's how you might want to describe innovation.Rickey McCallum: Throughout this whole discussion, we've heard from several different perspectives of the evolution of where the partnership came from, and most importantly, where it evolved into. But which really came first? Was it the Innovation Hub that started the conversation? Was it the liftgate project, or specific research that defined really what the Innovation Hub was going to be? Or was it neither? Don't worry, listeners, this isn't the chicken or egg scenario. We do have an answer. A good one, from Marc Gibson.Marc Gibson: Yeah, that's a good question. So, the liftgate project was really kind of our launchpad. That's an IACMI project, led by several of our faculty members here that I think you're probably also going to talk with Dr. Uday Vaidya, and then Dr. Dayakar Penumadu. That project got off the ground and really, I think, excelled their thought process on the confidence that they would have and what we are capable of doing. And so I think once we established that we could do the work and that we had the expertise—and that we had the equipment here. I mean, if you look at the resources that we have here, it's pretty phenomenal. On a global scale, I'm not sure that anyone in the world has the type of capabilities that we have here between UT and ORNL. The cool nuance there is essentially what they do is they identify a project, okay. And they come to us and they say, “Can you solve this project?” And we connect them with a faculty member that we think can solve the problem. And then they create a statement of work, the faculty member goes and identifies a PhD student, and then Volkswagen pays the PhD student to go to school at UT. We're talking about the liftgate on the back of one of these vehicles. To do something like that—you know, I think Volkswagen told me at one time—and you have to ask them, but I think they told me at one time to get something like that changed and on the assembly line on one of their vehicles, it typically takes, like, five years. And, you know… we [laugh] we fast-tracked that. I mean, you look at what we were able to do. I mean, we were able to do that really in like two to three years, and it's now going to be manufactured, going on the assembly line, and consumers are going to be able to buy vehicles that are going to be manufactured in Chattanooga, that had University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory technology in it. I mean, how cool is that? But you can kind of look at some of the other projects that are taking place now, too. I mean, it's not just around lightweighting and composites. Now they're moving into batteries. One of the big things—and you'll have to ask Volkswagen a little bit more about this, but one of the big things about that plant is they've also started almost a billion-dollar infrastructure improvement slash addition, in Chattanooga—and you got to think, that plant's less than 10 years old—to do all battery work and battery research. And so they're really going to be looking at faculty members here. In fact, two of the projects that they've kicked off already are going to be housed in our Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and doing battery work. And I think that speaks volumes; they're not just here to do composites and manufacturing, but they're here to access other areas of expertise, too, which I think is pretty cool.Rickey McCallum: So, Marc mentioned the liftgate project. Let's talk about that. It's the project that is really the main focus right now here at the UT Research Park. So, we're going to get into a little bit more details and specifics about that in one of our next episodes, but it's the first project in which the Research Park is actively working to find an innovative solution to a real-world problem. And it is very important to Tennessee specifically because while research parks do work hard here in Knoxville to create the solution, the VW plant in Chattanooga is working hard to implement that said solution. So, the entire project from start to finish is being handled right here in East Tennessee. So, of course, when it comes to a project like that, we have to think ahead to the impact the project will have on the future. So, what does this project mean for the future of the Innovation Hub in 5, 10, 15 years?Dr. Uday Vaidya: Sure, so in the liftgate project one type of intermediate materials have been used, but composites offer such a broad design space. It's like a painter's palette, really, you can choose a range of different things and come up with unique innovations every single time. So, it just offers innumerable possibilities for futuristic designs. So, the Volkswagen liftgate project, as you know, was one of the first signature projects for IACMI under the Composites Institute. Volkswagen is a key company in the Tennessee area. In Chattanooga, they're producing vehicles. Most of the current vehicles require lightweighting because of possibilities for energy savings, energy efficiency, less fuel consumption, and so on, so every ounce that you save from the vehicle's weight impacts the economy in terms of its cost savings down the road. So, the whole idea from Volkswagen, currently their liftgates are made out of stamped steel, sheet metal, which is good. Excellent material, but there's a lot of potential that composites offer, such as high-impact resistance, ability to tailor, create deep draws, complex shape parts, and near net shape parts. So, we had a good potential there to use all the attributes of composites towards this application, and that's where the unique combination of IACMI, Oak Ridge, University of Tennessee, this ecosystem came into play, of course with other partners as part of this project. So, really, all our industry-related projects are highly valuable because it provides the students and the staff working on it a real-world opportunity. So, everything they're doing has a purpose, meaning, and an actual tangible product, process, et cetera, down the road, that they can see what their research is actually leading into. The Volkswagen project, like any other project, obviously engaged a number of students—both undergrad and grad students—towards problem solving all the way from design process, process modeling, testing, characterization, you know, the whole process of designing a part all the way to the end product, so they could actually see the fruits of the labor at different stages as it was going on. So, that led to a lot of fundamental research along the way for PhD and masters students, as well as a lot of experiential learning for undergraduate students, who had never even seen or known what composites was about, that gave them the opportunity. So, when they now put their CV together—or resume—they would have a huge impact. When they go to their interview, they can actually speak in terms of real-world opportunities they have been faced. So, it's a very valuable relation and experience.Rickey McCallum: And of course, the liftgate project is only the beginning, only one of many projects and research studies being done in the Innovation Hub. So, Dr. Tolbert, some of the topics of discussion that we've had around Volkswagen's partnership is around technologies for future electric vehicles, including power electronics and wireless charging, what's the future of EV, in your mind, with this partnership, and how the University of Tennessee can help advance the technology and innovation that Volkswagen is looking for?Dr. Leon Tolbert: So, I was really excited when Volkswagen approached us to talk about electric vehicles and their plans that they're doing in Chattanooga to build new vehicles, mostly because I've worked on electric vehicles since the 1990s. A lot of that was through Oak Ridge National Lab and the research that they're doing at National Transportation Research Center; they've been working on electric vehicles since the early '90s. And I really see electric vehicles, and just electrification of transportation in general, as a bright future and a trend that's global. We've done quite a bit of work on looking at traction drives using silicon carbide wide bandgap materials to electrify vehicles. And I think, as we've seen, a lot of companies are pursuing autonomous vehicles and that's also going to require electrification of vehicles in order to be able to charge a while they park and things like that. So, we really see a bright future, and we're very excited when Volkswagen came and wanted to work with us on this. So, at the University of Tennessee in our department, we have a wide bandgap traineeship for graduate students, and that was funded by the US Department of Energy specifically to attract US citizens to work on wide bandgap power electronics. And we've had probably more than two dozen students in that program since it's initiated, and most of them are MS students. And I think Volkswagen saw that program, saw our general strengths in power electronics, saw the tremendous amount of work being done at Oak Ridge National Lab, and came and wanting to partner with us in that area. And so they were interested in a couple of students coming out of this traineeship, transitioning to become VW Fellows and pursue PhD, and I think what we like as faculty in working with industry is we want our research to eventually end up being used somewhere. And so it really helps inform our research to make it real-world applicable. And I think students, too, really gain a lot in working with industry because what they're working on, they hope one day will show up in a vehicle. So, I think obviously, there's lots of technologies that go into cars, and we've talked about the electrification of transportation, and so I do think there is quite a bit of room to grow in just drive train technology, there's a lot of room to grow in autonomous vehicles, a lot of room to grow in energy storage and battery technology. And I think this is a unique place, having Oak Ridge National Lab, TVA, University of Tennessee, and all of the research that goes on here. I would be remiss if I don't also mention CURENT. It's an NSF DOE engineering research center dedicated to looking at the future electric grid. And so we have one of the top programs in the country in power systems and power electronics, and more than 100 graduate students in that area. And so this is just really a great place for things like that.Rickey McCallum: So, there you have it. Now you know exactly what a research park is and how Knoxville ended up not only with one but also as the home of a VW Innovation Hub. So, next time we're going to dive in a little deeper. That's right, we're going to get into the projects, specifically the liftgate project, which is the UT Research Park's first project to solve a real-world problem in the VW Atlas. And it just may have been the siren's call that drew attention back to Knoxville and convinced VW to bring their North American Innovation Hub to us. So, find out more next time in the Research Park Chronicles. And thank you for listening to the Research Park Chronicles with Rickey McCallum. We'll pick up here next time with the rest of this story. WLS News Anchor Rob Martier, DriveChicago.com General Manager Mark Bilek and Chicago Auto Show Marketing Director Jim OBrill review the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and talk with Charlie Chesbrough, Senior Economist from Cox Automotive about the weird world of automobile sales right now.
The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a midsize SUV. But it joins its slightly larger sibling, the VW Atlas in the midsize SUV category. Here's the deal. Atlas Cross Sport is a 2-row whereas the larger VW Atlas is a 3-row. The differences pretty much start and stop there. So if you have kids at home go with the Atlas. And if you don't you'll probably opt for the Atlas Cross Sport. Because it's a bit sleeker, sportier, and even more European-looking. However, you cannot go wrong either way. Because both the Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport are great overall values. ✅ Test drive Atlas Cross Sport midsize SUV at Southern California's Volkswagen HQ –> Ontario Volkswagen. 2021 VW Atlas Cross Sport Top-3: Overall value. There is shocking news about how much it costs to maintain electric vehicles just out. We'll tell you all about it in this episode of America on the Road. A new study reveals that everything you knew about electric vehicles — or at least everything you knew about how much it costs to maintain them — is all wrong. The details surprised us, and we'll give you our opinion on the analysis. In the interview segment of the program, we dive even deeper into EVs. Our guest is Mike Battaglia, senior vice president at Blink, a big player in the electric vehicle charging business. Our host Jack Nerad got a chance for a no-holds-barred conversation with Battaglia on how the average consumer can happily live with an electric vehicle. Plus Battaglia has a fascinating business proposition for everyone in the country (almost) who owns a parking space, so tune in for that. The 2021 Nissan Armada was the road trip vehicle for the Teague family this past week, and we'll give you their candid reactions. In the road test segment co-host Chris Teague packed up his family into a full-size 2021 Nissan Armada SUV, and he'll reveal to us what he found out. Teague typically likes smaller vehicles so we're eager for his take on the imposing Armada. Host Jack Nerad talks about his evaluation of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas. It, too, is a sizable SUV, but not quite of the same proportions as the Armada. The Atlas brings a European sensibility and twist to the midsize SUV segment. Nerad will give us his straight-from-the-shoulder assessment of how it fares in comparison to better-known competitors like the Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander. The VW Atlas midsize crossover SUV provides distinctive style plus an extremely roomy and comfortable interior. In the listener question portion of America on the Road, both host and co-host field an inquiry about gasoline prices and summer-blend gas. Their answers should shed some light on a difficult situation as we enter the summer driving season. What are the 10 Most Affordable EVs to Insure?
Each week, we support the automotive enthusiests by spotlighting one of the many car clubs that help keep the sport growing. Car Clubs range from 'open' clubs that accept any vehilce as they are geared more to the fellowship of like minded auto guys and gals. Other clubs have 'year' limitations to narrow down the scope of the vehicles, such as vehilces before 1972. Still others get into specific brands or even models. The national Mustang Club of America is obvisously all about the Ford Mustang, but there are a lot of regional and local 'branches' that may be more specific by model year or style. Another long term brand that has generated a national club is the Corvette, which also comes down to regional and local levels. The Alamo Area Corvette Club is one such club, and they are very active, as are most Corvette clubs. Paul Woeppel joins us today to talk about the club, some of the activities they are involved with and even a state wide event that will be Boerne, Texas, just outside the Alamo City - San Antonio, Texas. In our feature segment, Michael Marrs has been in then New Car Showroom checking out the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas - a mid-size crossover SUV that drives much larger than it looks.----- ----- -----'In Wheel Time Car Talk' audio podcast can be heard each weekday on most providers:Apple Podcasts, Pandora Podcast, Amazon Music Podcast, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Overcast, Amazon Music, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Pandora, TuneIn + Alexa, Podcast Addict, Castro, Castbox and more on your mobile device.----- ----- -----In Wheel Time is a live broadcast every Saturday from 8:00a-11aCT streaming video to YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, and InWheelTime.com.----- ------ ------Want more In Wheel Time in real time? If you're interested in purchasing a vehicle, why not considering buying a new car that's nearly two years old? There's a huge inventory of 2019 vehicles available, particularly for consumers interested in Dodge. Here's the deal. The covid-19 pandemic stalled production of 2020 models for carmakers and resulted in the temporary closing of many car dealerships. Sales suffered. The 2019 Dodge Caravan is available for sale as a new car despite being nearly two years old. But a positive emerged from the health crisis, and Julie Blackley, an analyst at iseecars.com, is our guest on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast to discuss the issue. Dodge Caravan: New Car, Nearly Age 2 Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia talk with Blackley and she details the reasons why such large inventories of 2019 vehicles are available from different manufacturers. According to iSeeCars.com, the online automotive search engine and research website based in Woburn, Mass., there's a 10.8 percent industry average of new 2019 vehicles still in inventory. Surprisingly, some models, dubiously led by the Dodge Grand Caravan, have six times the national average of 2019 vehicles still in inventory. The top-20 vehicles on the list all have at least 20 percent of 2019 inventory available. Of course, not all of the list's vehicles are available in every state. iSeeCars.com analyzed its national inventory of more than 1 million new cars for sale to determine which models have more inventory from the 2019 model year available. “These cars provide opportunities for buyers to get a good deal on a new vehicle and are likely to come with generous incentives,” the website's analysts wrote. “A surplus of vehicles from the 2019 model year might remain on dealer lots because a car's popularity is declining because car buyers want to wait for an upcoming redesign, or because dealers simply have too much inventory,” said Phong Ly, the iSeeCars.com CEO. “More significant deals may be found on its remaining 2019 inventory, so consumers must examine their options for both model years and understand their negotiating power on 2019 vehicles.” Three additional Dodge models made the list including the third-ranked Dodge Journey, 11th-ranked Dodge Challenger and 18th-ranked Dodge Charger. “Discontinued after 2020, the Dodge Journey is limiting its trim and engine options for its final year, and is only advertising deals on its new 2019 models which include up to $5,000 off MSRP,” said Ly. “Meanwhile, the Dodge Charger saw record sales in 2019, but buyers may be opting for 2020 versions that have wider wheelbases including the SRT Hellcat and Scat Pack models.” The 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan is not available in 13 states due to emissions regulations, so dealers in those states are only selling new vehicles from the 2019 model year. Current offers on a 2019 Grand Caravan include $4,250 cash allowance and 0.9 percent APR financing for 84 months. Generous incentives are being offered on 2020 Charger and Challenger models including zero-percent financing and between $3,050 to $7,970 cashback. Similar to the Journey, another discontinued American car made the list: the Chevrolet Impala. “Although a reliable and highly-rated car, the discontinuation of the Impala shows that the large sedan isn't in high demand,” said Ly. By segment, minivans, led by the Dodge Grand Caravan, have the largest available inventory, 66. 3 percent. Compact luxury SUVs have the least available inventory, 14.3 percent. Here's the list of the top-20 vehicles in the United States with the largest percentage of new vehicles remaining in inventory from 2019. 1. Dodge Grand Caravan, 66.3 percent; 2. Chrysler 300 (50.9); 3. Dodge Journey (45.8); 4. Nissan Titan (43.7); 5. Ford Ranger (41.9); 6. Audi Q7 (40.9); 7. Ram Pickup 1500 Classic (39.4); 8. Volkswagen Atlas (37.1); 9. Alfa Romeo Giulia (32.8); 10. Chevrolet Impala, 31.8. 11.

2020 Volkswagen Atlas The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas is technically a midsize crossover SUV. But one could argue it belongs in the full-size category as it has three rows of seating. Additionally, it's the largest crossover SUV that VW offers. And it's big and roomy inside with room for adults in each row of seating. Plus Atlas offers plenty of cargo space and impressive tech. 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Top-3: Exterior design Interior space Fuel economy Personally, I've been a big fan of Atlas since it's debut in 20180. It's great for families without being too big. So I recently picked-up an Atlas from my friends at Ontario VW for this review. -->Continue reading or click play below to listen.
2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Reveal The first look I got at the 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport was at the LA Auto Show. While SoCal Volkswagen dealers will have it in the Spring of 2020. And at first glance, the new edition to VW's crossover SUV lineup looks much like it's bigger sibling, the Atlas with 3-rows of seating. But once you give it a little more attention the enhanced sportiness of the aptly named Cross Sport is definitely appreciated. And Cross Sport will seat up to 5. Personally, my mind drew a parallel the sibling Volkswagens (Atlas and Cross Sport) and another set of siblings. That's the luxury and way-way more expensive Land Rovers (Range Rover Sport and Velar). And my friend Randy Halcomb at Ontario Volkswagen says that's significant. Because "it highlights Volkswagen's innate ability to pack ridiculous value (and prestige) into its affordable-to-everyone products." -->Continue reading or click play below to listen.
Volkswagen Off-Road Volkswagen off-road is a phrase we haven't heard much of for years. Not since the Meyers Manx dune buggies were created from Beetles has VW really been associated with off-roading. But that's changing thanks to Americans' love affair with crossover SUVs. Because of that Volkswagen has recently spruced up and added to its crossover SUV lineup. So, 2020 brings three Volkswagen off-road / crossover SUV options. There's the compact Tiguan which is in its second generation. It has an optional 3rd row of seating. But it's mainly for smaller humans. :0) Plus, the Atlas Cross Sport which is a 5-seat midsize new entry to the lineup. It will soon be available at Southern California Volkswagen Dealers. And the Volkswagen Atlas, which arguably bumps up to full-size status with the entry of the Atlas Cross Sport. Because it's a 3-row 7-plus seater that VW just added to its lineup in 2018. Now, are all of these Volkswagen's off-road-ready? While not in a dedicated off-highway vehicle sense (OHV), it really depends on your degree of off-road-mindedness. And following Volkswagen's off-road trend, my friends at Ontario VW recently danced-up this Atlas. -->Continue reading or click play below to listen.

2019 Volkswagen Atlas Reviewing the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas has left me seriously considering buying one. Because this 7-passenger VW Atlas is big and functional, especially for families. Additionally, it's stylish, delivers great fuel economy and drives great. Now, the Atlas my friends at Ontario Volkswagen gave me to test drive was a top-of-the-line with nearly every option. However, even the base model Atlas deserves serious consideration for any mid-size SUV buyer. Continue reading to learn why my family might soon be rolling in an Atlas or click play below to hear the details in this iDriveSoCal Podcast. March 4, 2019 2019 VW Atlas Size First, let's address the Atlas's size. Of the two sport utility vehicles that Volkswagen offers, the Tiguan and the Atlas, the Atlas is the biggest. For the most part, the auto industry is referring to the Atlas as a mid-sized SUV. But since all vehicles have gotten bigger the Atlas is arguably a full-sized SUV and the Tiguan a mid-sized. "You can put up to 3 child safety seats in the second row!" The Atlas, as I previously stated is a big 7-passenger vehicle. It has a maximum cargo space of 96.8 cubic feet with both back rows of seats folded down. You can put up to 3 child safety seats in the second row! That's huge! 2019 Atlas 2nd row fits 3 child safety seats! I currently have a mid-sized SUV from a different manufacturer. And if I put my son's safety seat in the middle then there's hardly enough room for my wife (who's small) to fit on either side of him. But in the second row of the Atlas you can have three (3) child safety seats in a row - that's big. And super-handy for a family on the grow. 96.8 cubic ft. of flat-surfaced cargo space with seats down! The 2019 VW Atlas is also highly versatile with the amount of interior space it provides for both people and our stuff. With the second and third row of seats folded down, you are left with a whopping 96.8 cubic feet of cargo space. "With the second and third row of seats folded down, you are left with a whopping 96.8 cubic feet of cargo space." And Volkswagen engineers really made it easy to change the seat/storage configuration. Logically placed, easy to grab levers and straps make it a cinch. VW Atlas Configurations The 2019 VW Atlas that I test drove from Ontario Volkswagen was a V6 SEL Premium w/ 4Motion all-wheel drive. And I have to mention that I loved the color scheme - inside and out! (Pictured throughout this post.) Ontario VW put me in a 2019 Atlas V6 SEL Premium w/ 4Motion But the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas offers many configurations. There's undoubtedly one for every purpose and budget. The configuration options breakdown within three primary trim categories. Those trim categories, along with their starting manufacturers suggested retail prices include the following for the 2019 VW Atlas: S | $30,895 SE | $35,495 SEL | $41,395 Within those three trim options, Volkswagen offers the 2019 Atlas in 13 different standard trim configurations. Packages that help to make up the different trim configurations include: 4Motion all-wheel drive. Technology R-Line Premium The 2019 Atlas comes with two different engines. There's a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, inline 4-cylinder that puts out 235-horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. And there's the 3.6-liter V6 putting out 276-horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. "The V6 will deliver 17-mpg in the city and up to 24-mpg on the highway..." The inline 4-cylinder is only available on the 2019 Atlas S base model, the 276-horsepower V6 comes in every other trim configuration. Regarding fuel economy, inline 4 will give you 20 miles-per-gallon in the city and 26 on the highway. The V6 will deliver 17-mpg in the city and up to 24-mpg on the highway depending on your configuration. Fuel-saving engine start-stop feature. A great fuel-saving feature the 2019 VW Atlas offers is a super-smooth...

2018 Volkswagen Atlas The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is a new entry into VW's line-up. And you can refer to it as a midsize or a full-size. But either way, I refer to it as great overall value and a big win for VW's newest edition to its lineup. We picked up a loaded version from our friends at Ontario Volkswagen for a test drive and were seriously impressed. The mid-sized SUV is extremely versatile and packed with technology. Get all the details in this iDriveSoCal Podcast. ***Transcript Notes*** Recorded May 17, 2018, in Los Angeles, CA 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Review Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility from the automotive capital of the United States – Southern California! Tom Smith here and today we're reviewing the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas from our friends in the Los Angeles suburb of Ontario, California – Ontario Volkswagen. 2018 Volkswagen Atlas driver profile 2018 is the first year for the Atlas and VW definitely did this mid-sized SUV right! I recently took one for a half-day test drive and was seriously impressed by many aspects of the vehicle. Trim Configurations & Pricing When it comes to trim levels the Volkswagen Atlas really offers something for everyone with many different options. But the main trim levels include the S, Launch Edition, SE and the SEL. Plus on most trims, you have the option to include Volkswagen's all-wheel-drive 4MOTION and it's well-rounded Technology package. And manufacturers suggested retail pricing is going to begin around $30,000 and go up to roughly $46,000 fully loaded. As always, the prices we quote are just estimates. You need to select the Atlas that's equipped to your liking and your price will reflect that. But you definitely want to go Ontario Volkswagen to do so. Ask for our friends Randy Halcomb or Scott Reed and they'll hook you up. The 2018 VW Atlas I Reviewed Lucky for me, I got to drive the top of the line Atlas. The V6 SEL Premium with 4-Motion. Now there's one option that my test-driver didn't have and that's the R-Line Appearance Package. The Atlas is a great looking SUV as is. But if you're looking for something just a little sportier – or bolder – looking the R-Line dances it up nicely. The R-Line gives you 20-inch alloy rims, a grill that's a bit bolder looking and some nice accents on both the interior and exterior. Not a big price increase but like I said – definitely dances up the appearance nicely. 2018 Volkswagen Atlas cockpit The first time I spotted the Atlas on the road was somewhere on La Cienega near Culver City. I remember the situation vividly because at first glance I swore I was looking at an Audi. I also recall the situation vividly because we had just started the iDriveSoCal Podcast and I immediately called Professor Quan to tell him about my first road-sighting of the new VW offering. Of course, Professor excitedly rattled off all kinds of stats about the vehicle right off the top of his head. Including: The 5-star Safety Rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Board. And the industry-leading 6-year 72-thousand-mile bumper to bumper warranty. What Does the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Look Like? Anyway, at first sight I thought the Atlas looked fantastic. Bold and rugged yet classy and refined with great, clean lines. The Atlas I drove looked even better – as again, I drove the top of the line. Now it's technically a mid-size SUV but as we've discussed in many podcasts – everything is getting bigger lately. And the Atlas follows suit. From the outside it looks a bit bigger than a mid-sized SUV. And inside it's huge – which is awesome and we'll get into that in just a second. But what I loved about the Atlas is that while it looked and felt bigger it definitely drove like a mid-size SUV. It was highly maneuverable. I swung by the Bass Pro Shop during my test drive and navigating the parking lot was not only a breeze...

Is the Nissan Leaf DOA because of its miniscule battery range in comparison to the Chevrolet Bolt? Should Volkswagen be building 'American' cars like the full-size Atlas SUV in a bid to engage with buyers? These questions get answered this week as Benjamin and Sami try to figure out the two unusual corporate strategies behind this pair of vehicles. Sami also reports on all the good and bad vehicle debuts from the New York Auto Show.
Several months ago, Chris Wood decided it was time for a new vehicle. He has a family, including four grandchildren, a 50-pound dog and a 5,000-pound ski boat and equipment to haul. He had $50,000 to spend, but he was faced with a lingering dilemma. Wood, 63, of Pleasanton, a retired Silicon Valley computer salesman, looked for six months but couldn't find a new sports utility vehicle that fit his criteria and could match the quality his previous vehicle, a 1999 Ford Explorer. My dad gave me enough confidence introducing me to everything. He showed me how to rebuild a carburetor on a lawn mower so could learn how to do things myself." With his long, satisfying experience with Ford, Wood could have purchased another Explorer. But for 2018 he said the carmaker charges $600 for upgraded white paint. The basic white paint option was eliminated. “I just had an aversion to paying $600 for paint,” he said. Wood looked for used vehicles, but finding a well-built trailer hitch proved futile. Third-row seating was important and a cargo area large enough for a dog cage. He didn't want a white interior. Dodge, Honda and Toyota choices were eliminated for various reasons, including not wanting the expense and impractical issues of leather seats. The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas included 95 percent of what Chris Wood was seeking in a new sport utility vehicle for his family, dog and boat. “I really wanted an upscale cloth interior,” said Wood. “Maybe I'm the only guy on the planet who likes a cloth interior. I would have paid a leather price for a cloth interior. It's comfortable. The 19-year-old cloth interior of my Ford Explorer was in great shape the day I sold it. Plus you can't find five-year-old leather that looks good, in my opinion.” Wood recently purchased a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas, a debut SUV and his first VW. He provided a list of 16 pros and seven cons after driving the vehicle for 1,500 miles. He meticulously studies the owner's manual and has about two-dozen colored tabs on various sections. He has other sections marked in red for more tabs after additional reading. Among the features Wood appreciates in his new Atlas is the standard trailer hitch and better position than after-market options. The transmission shift points are good for daily driving. The rear seat tilt with a child's seat installed is superior. Wood is also impressed with the infotainment system, the 360-degree camera, the large navigation screen, the logical and easy-to-understand changes and settings and the automatic engine start-stop function. Expensive accessories, including the $600 side rail and the cost of installation as well and the $300 cargo cover, $320 roof rails and $300 ski rack are cons. Wood doesn't appreciate the manufacturer's obsession with warning proclamations throughout the owner's manual. He suggests a section for owners who to do their own maintenance and repair. "Give me a break," Wood noted. "Let Darwin's laws prevail." Like many car enthusiasts, Wood's fascination with cars began with a family vehicle from his youth. His mother and father saved their money and purchased a 1966 Buick Skylark demo model. His family took two cross-country trips in the Skylark, pulling a camper-trailer. “I tend to be pretty analytical,” Wood said. “My wife and I bought an RV a couple of years ago. We looked for a year for it. We thought about it and really studied and analyzed it. How are we going to use it? What do our friends say who've owned RVs?" With his new purchase, Wood is 95 percent satisfied. "It's an excellent vehicle," he said. "I just want people to know about it."
