Adam Engst (TidBITS) discusses a malware incident in a long-running public "Slack Bits" group where a bad actor impersonated Glenn Fleishman via a duplicate Slack display name, tricking him into downloading an info-stealer, prompting Engst to consider shutting down the 1,400-member community. The conversation shifts to Anthropic's Mythos and Project Glasswing (as covered by TidBITS security editor Rich Mogull), which reportedly found long-standing bugs (including in OpenBSD and FFmpeg), raising concerns about AI-accelerated vulnerability discovery, defender/attacker asymmetries, costs and compute barriers, and impacts on zero-day markets. They also cover Apple's iOS signing and update/upgrade distinctions, why Apple supports macOS differently than iOS, broader distrust in institutions, social media's advertising/algorithm problems (including Section 230), bots and AI-driven phishing, and the idea of local, user-controlled AI agents to help protect individuals online. 00:00 Welcome Back Adam Engst 00:20 Slack Impersonation Scare 02:15 Cleaning Up a Public Slack 03:40 Mythos and Glasswing Explained 05:19 AI Bug Hunting Reality Check 08:25 Red Team Blue Team Asymmetry 09:50 Compute Costs and Access Barriers 12:19 Trust Ethics and Regulation 17:50 Personal AI Security Agents 23:34 Zero Day Markets and Exploit Kits 25:40 iOS Signing and Update Windows 27:13 Why Macs Get Longer Support 32:06 Scams Incentives and Pig Butchering 34:02 Life Offline and Misinformation 35:41 Social Media Hot Garbage 36:43 Addiction By Design 37:46 Advertising Model Flaw 38:47 Infinite Scroll Limits 39:39 Dunbar Number Reality 40:54 Platform Power Responsibility 42:46 AI Influencers And Slop 43:37 Bots And Fake Accounts 46:33 AI Phishing And Passkeys 49:21 Closed Communities Trust 53:25 CAPTCHAs And Human Help 56:08 Section 230 And Algorithms 57:46 Chronological Feed Fix 59:35 Two Week News Rule 01:02:41 Ads In Maps Backlash 01:04:10 Wrap Up And Next Part
It was certainly an eventful week in the Moonshine Capital, and across the country if you can believe that. For longtime Podcast Guest, and Rocky Mount Mayor Holland Perdue, that was certainly the case as he headlined the news cycle twice. He first made local headlines after a ruling by the Virginia State bar for suspending his license for 36 months, a process some citizens are questioning (Check out our Subscriber Only After Show on Patreon). The second time involved a man making his way to his office and making threats to him and his staff. We also discussed his recent Big Event at the Harvester, we got some updates on town happenings, upcoming events, touched on some national news, and much more!Support the show

Bookmark this page: Publishing Scam Alerts via the Authors Guild. One of the many unfortunate outcomes of the rise of Artificial Intelligence in the Writing Business is the increase of scams aimed at authors desperate for public exposure. Sophisticated emails with specific details about our books claim they will help us gain a wider audience for "a nominal fee."A quick Google search (ironically via their AI) categorizes these scams into four general categories:Impersonation and Phishing Scams,Upfront Fee Scams,Marketing, PR, and Review Scams, and Freelance Writing Scams. The one we see the most is the Book Club scam: someone claims to represent a book club with "hundreds of members," and they will share our book with those members for a fee. Another one we got hit with this week was someone claiming to represent a legitimate publisher, but a quick internet search revealed the IP address on their server was created the day before the email. Yeah, no.Nobody should have access to your money or your dreams without your permission, so when you see these unsolicited emails: hesitate, stop, and research. Do not click any links inside the email. Open another browser window and check out the sender and their organization.Bottom Line: if it sounds to good to be true, it absolutely is too good to be true.Appearances:– I'm at Comma Coffee two or three times a week. Episode 318 examines critical vulnerabilities and the evolving impact of AI on the security industry. The episode details a recent sophisticated impersonation and malware attack targeting open-source Slack communities, including their own, where attackers spoofed Seth's identity to distribute malicious links via Google Sites. The hosts express significant frustration with Slack's lack of built-in impersonation controls, comparing the flaw to the inherent trust issues in the Git protocol. A major portion of the discussion focuses on the "leak" of Anthropic's highly capable Mythos model and its potential to disrupt the market. They analyze how such frontier model announcements contribute to massive stock market volatility for traditional security firms while simultaneously creating an "intense echo chamber" regarding AI's ability to replace human practitioners. Referencing Thomas Ptacek's thesis, they debate whether AI agents will soon supplant human vulnerability research for common bug classes, shifting the human role toward high-level governance and "context infusion". Ultimately, the hosts advocate for autonomous defense and rigorous evaluation frameworks to manage "reasoning drift" and the exploding velocity of AI-generated code.
Someone could list your land for sale today, find a buyer, close the deal, and pocket the money. You would not know it happened until it was too late to stop it. This is not hypothetical. It is happening right now across the country, and vacant land owned free and clear by out-of-state or absentee owners is the number one target. In this conversation, National Land Realty broker Ryan Schroeder out of Nebraska, compliance director Jeramy Stephens out of Arkansas, and COO Susan Floyd out of South Carolina pull back the curtain on every major fraud scheme hitting the land industry today. They break down seller impersonation, where scammers mine public records to steal a landowner's identity and list property they have never set foot on. They cover wire fraud and how a single intercepted email has cost buyers and sellers everything at closing. They walk through forged quitclaim deeds, contract flipping, and the fake earnest money check scheme that catches agents off guard more than people realize. More importantly, they tell you exactly what to do about it. From free government monitoring tools like propertyfraudalert.com to why putting land in an LLC adds a layer of protection most owners never consider, this episode is a practical checklist for inherited landowners, rural investors, real estate agents and anyone sitting on property they do not visit regularly. As remote work and global hiring become standard, the enterprise faces a new crisis: the infiltration of fraudulent identities into the trusted workforce. This episode examines the failure of legacy verification systems and the rise of sophisticated, AI-driven impersonation tactics that circumvent traditional security. In this episode, Entrust experts Mike Baxter and Rishi Kaushal discuss the necessity of securing high-risk moments across the entire employee lifecycle. The discussion focuses on moving beyond one-time background checks toward a model of continuous, biometric-anchored identity to secure every employee touchpoint.

Phone scams get dismissed as background noise or just annoying interruptions and unknown numbers with robotic voices we learn to ignore. But behind that noise is an industry built on psychology, automation, and staggering profitability. My guest today is Alex Quilici. He's an engineer, entrepreneur, and the CEO of YouMail, a company focused on protecting consumers and businesses from unwanted and fraudulent calls. Alex has spent years analyzing how robocalls and scam campaigns are designed, how they evolve, and why they continue to work despite better technology and increased awareness. What began as a voicemail platform shifted into fraud prevention after users unintentionally revealed a powerful truth that even small friction can disrupt scam operations. He shares how his own father got pulled into a tech support scam which cemented his mission to move beyond blocking calls and toward tracing and stopping scams closer to their source. We talk about how scam calls are engineered, the tactics that trigger panic and urgency, and how criminals use data breaches, AI tools, and impersonation to sound convincing. We also explore what's changing, including fewer random calls, more targeted attacks, rising text and messaging scams, and the difficult balance between stopping fraud and allowing legitimate calls through. Alex shares practical ways consumers and businesses can reduce risk, along with a candid look at why this problem is so persistent and where it's likely heading next. Show Notes: [2:23] Alex explains how YouMail shifted from a voicemail company into fraud prevention after noticing users using an out-of-service message to deter robocallers. [3:25] Discussion turns to robocall volume, with Alex estimating billions of calls per day and roughly five billion robocalls per month. [4:10] About half of all robocalls are unwanted, while the rest include legitimate reminders from doctors, hospitals, and financial institutions. [5:05] Alex notes that legitimate telemarketing still exists but is now heavily overshadowed by sketchy and scam-driven campaigns. [6:40] Scam calls have declined in raw volume, yet attackers are becoming more targeted and efficient. [7:15] Scammers increasingly pivot to texts, email, and messaging platforms where third-party blocking is harder. [9:27] Alex describes limited progress shutting down shady telemarketers but better success against large-scale illegal robocall operations. [11:05] Sense of urgency emerges as the dominant tactic, often involving fake charges, legal threats, or financial panic triggers. [13:10] Modern scams combine spoofed caller ID with breached personal data to create highly convincing impersonations. [16:27] Scammers are compared to extremely motivated marketers who rapidly adopt AI and optimization techniques. [17:30] The economics are startling, with scam campaigns generating enormous profits at extremely low cost per call. [18:44] Alex advises letting unexpected calls go to voicemail and returning calls through verified, official channels. [20:50] Panic-based bank account scams are highlighted as particularly dangerous because fear overrides logic. [23:19] Businesses are identified as vulnerable targets, especially through employees' personal mobile phones. [31:52] Enforcement efforts are increasing, and Alex predicts stronger regulatory pressure over the coming year. [35:54] Impersonation scams tied to toll roads, DMVs, crypto, and romance schemes are flagged as growing threats. [38:19] A simple defensive principle is reinforced: pause, disengage, and verify independently before taking action. [41:44] Alex outlines YouMail's call-screening approach, adding friction that blocks automated scam systems while allowing real callers through. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Why is fraud getting harder to spot just as AI gets better at pretending to be human? In this episode of The Lending Link, host Nathan George sits down with Justin Keene, Ph.D., CEO and Co-Founder of Moveris, to explore one of the fastest-growing threats in digital onboarding and account access: deepfakes and AI impersonation. They talk about why old ways of spotting fraud, like checking device information, how people act, and even video checks to see if someone is real, are not enough anymore. As AI-powered attacks become smarter and easier to deploy widely, scammers can now bypass many of the checks that banks and lenders have relied on for a long time. Justin shares how Moveris tackles the problem in a new way by looking for real signs that a person is actually there, not just signs of trickery, using body and mind signals picked up by a regular camera. They also talk about how AI is changing the way fraud works, making smaller banks, credit unions, and lenders who work with people with lower credit scores more likely to be targeted. They explain why tricks like using stolen usernames and passwords, reusing old identities, and using fake videos to fool people are happening more often. They end by looking to a future where showing you are a real person and the same person each time could become the main way to prove who you are online, instead of using passwords, CAPTCHA, and other steps that slow things down.

Comedic impressionist Dylisms is here. He has LOUDLY become one of the funniest voices in trail running by doing spot-on (and occasionally unhinged) impressions of the sport we all take way too seriously. We get into how he makes viral running videos using nothing but his phone, his car, and pure chaos, why he waited to run an ultra before posting running content, and how trail running compares to climbing, skating, and just… exercising for a really long time. Along the way, he drops impressions of commentators, influencers, philosophers, cops, firefighters, and anyone else who's wandered into the ultrarunning cinematic universe. We also talk about award season absurdity, influencer culture, $200 shirts with holes in them, farting during ultras, and whether trail running is actually a sport or just very committed cardio. This one goes fully off the rails in the best way.If you've ever thought “we might be taking this a little too seriously,” this episode is for you.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Dylisms and Impressions05:04 The Art of Voiceovers and Equipment Setup07:56 Favorite Impressions and Character Exploration10:51 Challenges in Impersonation and Method Acting13:39 Transitioning from Climbing to Running Content16:47 Community Reception and Content Creation Process19:55 Humor in Running and Climbing Culture22:46 Reflections on Storylines in Trail Running24:43 Trail Running: A Selfish Pursuit26:56 The Evolution of Running Culture29:36 Moth Tech and Running Fashion32:22 Impersonations and Humor in the Sport36:51 The Seriousness of Ultra Running40:56 Universal Basic Gel Allowance41:45 Closing Thoughts and ReflectionsSupport our Sponsors: Sawyer: https://sawyerdirect.net/Janji (code: Freeoutside): https://snp.link/a0bfb726CS Coffee: CSinstant.coffeeGarage Grown Gear: https://snp.link/db1ba8abSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside#Trailrunning #Runningnews #Outdoors #Outdooradventure
