In his mid 20s, Alex Brueckmann had to rethink his career trajectory and shifted from being a music journalist and DJ to learning how businesses and the economy work. He studied General Management at European Business School (Germany) and Universidad ORT (Uruguay). Spoiler alert: business strategy was not Alex's favorite subject… This passion developed over time, first when he joined a global media corporation and helped restructure a division. Alex became a management consultant specializing in strategy facilitation. He wanted to avoid seeing mass redundancies ever again and started to help businesses understand the need to create momentum even when they're still sailing smoothly. Alex worked with some of the biggest brands in automotive, healthcare, tech, telco, finance, and service industries to help them create future proof organizations with clear targets and the tools and processes to make them a reality. He kept learning and earned certificates from INSEAD (France), Harvard Business School (USA), and a number of executive coaching related certifications. Alex developed his own approaches based on what he had learned over two decades, to make it accessible for small and medium sized businesses to get clarity and grow their revenue. Alex has done this using tailored strategies and tools that reduce friction, stress and overwhelm, and allow them to create actionable plans that achieve their goals. Speaker: Professor Alberto Saiz Garitaonandia (University of the Basque Country) Among some other problems, due to court congestion and case backlog, many judicial systems are seen as slow and unable to offer a response to the citizen´s demands in a reasonable time. The limitations and restrictions implemented by the different governments during the Covid 19 pandemic crisis have exacerbated the previous concern, but at the same time has shown how new technologies, such as videoconferencing, can be introduced and play an important role in the traditionally conservative area of Justice. In this context, the rapid improvement of the artificial intelligence (AI) in the last few years and its extensive use in some transcendent spheres of our lives makes us wonder how we could integrate such a technology in the area of justice, supporting or, even more, substituting a judge. In fact, a certain amount of studies using machine learning has achieved a significant level of accuracy predicting judicial outcomes. However, problems such as bias and lack of transparency may limit the deployment of AI in the judiciary. In any case, if it wants to preserve its legitimacy the judiciary must adapt itself to the new times and technologies used by the society it is serving. As some commentators have stated, we should not see the court as a place, but as a service that may be provided in different ways. About the speaker: Alberto Saiz Garitaonandia is currently a Professor of Procedural Law at the University of the Basque Country. Prof. Saiz Garitaonandia served as Director of the Basque Government Legal Department - Solicitor General (2013-2020). He was awarded a Visiting Fellowship in Clare Hall College at the University of Cambridge for the academic year 2021-2022 where, invited by the Centre for Corporate and Commercial Law (3CL), he is researching in the area of artificial intelligence applied to dispute resolution. He has been Visiting Professor and Researcher at Stanford University, Georgetown University, American University, Florida International University and University of Nevada (USA). He is the author of several books and articles and has served as a member of the Executive Board of the European Society of Criminology (2011-2013), directing its Annual Conference in 2012. His areas of research include the Organization of Justice, Law and New Technologies and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Prof. Saiz Garitaonandia holds a Law Degree, a Degree in Political Sciences and an Executive MBA from Deusto Business School (2017-2018), which included the Value Innovation Programme at INSEAD (France) and the Global Gateway Program at Fordham University (USA). His PhD received the Extraordinary Doctor´s Degree Award, a special mention for the quality of his thesis. 3CL runs the 3CL Travers Smith Lunchtime Seminar Series, which are are kindly supported by Travers Smith featuring leading academics from the Faculty, and high-profile practitioners. Small business owners never have enough time. There is always more to do than than a day a day it fits in a day's work. Guest, Alex Brueckmann believes a good strategy becomes your system to prioritize rigorously where you invest your time and also your money. Your strategy starts with an outline of what you want your business to be. A great business won't happen by accident. Writing down your vision makes it clear to you, your employees and your customers what your business is really about. Writing down your vision gives you a starting point to evaluate new opportunities. Do they fit with your overall plan or are they a distraction. Preface: The origins of the phrase are a mystery. It takes a village to raise a child is a proverb that spirited from African or Native American cultures. The phrase translates into saying that it takes an entire community of different people interacting with children in order for children to experience and grow in a safe environment. The thought leaders, game-changers, and innovators that we look up to are often impacted by the same thing: they’ve been exposed to people, environments, and interactions that have helped shape and define who they are today. The It Takes a C-Tribe Village Podcast aims to identify, dissect, and celebrate the unsung heroes, things, and experiences that have impacted the greatest minds of our generation and how these individuals are paying it forward for those to come. Show notes: "I was always interested in business, but when I came to university I was actually more interested in psychology and in how people think and made decisions. My undergrad degree was in psychology. As I was working my way through that degree I did take a couple of business courses and my plan was to go and work in the business world. I spent the first 5 years of my career working in finance for a wealth management company in Edmonton. I was also taking MBA classes at night to upgrade my skills a little bit and one of my professors said "with your background, you'd be a good fit for a PhD." I didn't really know this even existing in business, but gave me the chance to marry by two interests in business and psychology and a lot of the research I do now in consumer psychology—also known as behavioral economics—is about trying to understand how people make decisions."
