He has a keen interest in circadian and quantum biology, exploring how light impacts human health. Introduction: In today's episode, we delve into the intriguing topic of blue light and its surprising impact on our health, specifically its role in weight gain and diabetes. Max will guide us through the basics of blue light, its toxicity, and practical steps we can take to mitigate its effects. Discussion Outline:   Exploring Blue Light and Its Effects What is blue light? Blue light is a high-energy, short-wavelength light emitted by digital screens, LED lights, and sunlight. Understanding Blue Light Toxicity Blue light toxicity refers to the harmful effects of prolonged exposure to blue light, disrupting our circadian rhythms and potentially leading to various health issues such as obesity and diabetes The Importance of Morning and Evening Sun Why is getting morning and evening sun important? Exposure to natural sunlight, especially in the morning and evening, helps regulate our internal body clock (circadian rhythm), which is crucial for overall health and well-being. Impact of Blue Light on Health Blue Light and Sugar Regulation Blue light exposure has been linked to disruptions in glucose metabolism, potentially contributing to insulin resistance and diabetes. Blue Light and Mental Health There's evidence suggesting that blue light exposure, especially at night, can interfere with sleep patterns and contribute to mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Practical Steps to Mitigate Blue Light Effects Conclusion: Today, we've learned about the profound impact of blue light on our health, from disrupting sleep patterns to affecting metabolism and mental well-being. By understanding these effects and implementing simple lifestyle changes, we can better protect ourselves from the harmful effects of excessive blue light exposure. Welcome to the Personal Development Trailblazers Podcast! In this episode, we dive into the importance of resilience in women and learning to bounce back after a fall. Marcie Macari is a published author, Speaker, Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner, and Resiliency Coach. Her resilience resume includes: surviving every kind of abuse, nearly every natural disaster, a health condition that left her bedridden overnight and stole more than 10 years of her life, and being abandoned by a Christian ministry in Africa when she came out as a Lesbian.  With the ministry refusing to fly her home or renew her work visa, Marcie started making, selling, or trading handmade greeting cards for food to feed her and her 14 month old daughter. When she was 24 and woke up suddenly very ill, she went to every type of doctor and specialist she could find. No one seemed to be able to help, so she studied to be Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner, (ROHP) graduated the 3-year program in a year with First Class Honors and worked to heal herself using food and nutrition as medicine. She has been helping people heal themselves ever since, and coaching people to harness their resilience to overcome the challenges they face…to bounce, not break! Marcie is the author of “She Births: A Modern Woman's Guidebook for an Ancient Rite of Passage” and has been published in several magazines including: “VIVA”, “Compleat Mother”, and “Island Child”. Her stories and writings have appeared in: “Bearing Witness” by Dr. Lisa Doran and Lisa Caron, as well as in several blogs. She is currently a "re-emerging" speaker with over 10,000 stage performances to her name and hundreds of workshops, presentations, and speeches under her pre-digital era belt.  Marcie speaks on topics of importance to women, entrepreneurs, the LGBTQ community, welcoming religious groups and marginalized youth-all with a focus on RESILIENCE.    When she isn't speaking, working on her second book, or teaching, you can probably find her cuddled up with her Cornish Rex Cosmo and a cup of herbal tea. Set in Colonial Northern Nigeria, this book confronts a paradox: the state insisted on its separation from religion even as it governed its multireligious population through what remained of the precolonial caliphate. Entangled Domains: Empire, Law and Religion in Northern Nigeria (Cambridge UP, 2023) grapples with this history to offer a provocative account of secularism as a contested yet contingent mode of governing religion and religious difference. Drawing on detailed archival research, Rabiat Akande vividly illustrates constitutional struggles triggered by the colonial state's governance of religion and interrogates the legacy of that governance agenda in the postcolonial state. This book is a novel commentary on the dynamic interplay between law, faith, identity, and power in the context of the modern state's emergence from colonial processes. Dr. Akande is currently an Assistant Professor in the Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Canada and chairs the international legal history project at the African Institute of International Law in Arusha. As I listened to Marcy Macari's voice, her strength and conviction moved me. Her journey, steeped in the challenges of overcoming abuse and religious trauma, unfolds in our latest episode, offering not just her story, but a beacon of hope for anyone facing their darkest moments. Marcy, a transformational life coach and inspirational speaker, courageously opens up about her tumultuous childhood filled with violence, the shackles of addiction within her family, and the crippling silence imposed on her by a church community. Her past, rife with exploitation and psychological scars, paves the way for a powerful discourse on resilience and the unyielding human spirit. The tale takes a dramatic turn as Marcy describes the intersection of faith and identity, where the internal battle of a missionary's sexual identity meets the harsh judgments of religious dogma. The haunting account of a forced exorcism and the struggle to maintain authenticity in an unforgiving environment is both disheartening and enlightening. Marcy's experience of finding solace in the words of a gay pastor and the desperate measures taken to protect her baby highlight the profound struggles that led to an unshakable quest for authenticity and inner peace. Through her narrative, we grapple with the complexities of belief and the necessity to forge our own paths in the pursuit of truth. In the final chapter of Marcy's odyssey, we touch upon the critical importance of community support and the role of creativity in healing from trauma. Marcy sheds light on the gravity of domestic violence and the essential conversations surrounding support for the LGBTQ+ community. Her story is a testament to the enduring fight for individuality and personal attraction, challenging us to honor the inherent worth of every person. As we wrap up our discussion, Marcy leaves us inspired, with her eloquence painting a vivid picture of a world where respect and acceptance are not just ideals, but a reality for all if we allow it to be.   Marcie Macari's bio Marcie Macari is a published author, Culinary Instructor to adults with developmental disabilities, and Registered Orthomolecular Health Practitioner. Marcie speaks on topics of importance to women, entrepreneurs, the LGBTQ community, welcoming religious groups and marginalized youth, all with a focus on RESILIENCE. There are limitations for those studying nutrition through university programs. Universities tend to teach students an established way of analysing problems. [07:08] Nutrition in the Field of Medicine Most general practitioners do not have in-depth knowledge about nutrition, which has given them a bad reputation at times. The study of nutrition can range from diet to nutrient medication and even to gene interactions. General Practitioners may not know more specialized information about nutrition. According to Mikki, we may have grown up thinking that our doctor's decisions are absolute. You are always free to take ownership of your health. Mikki recommends Lara Briden's book, Hormone Repair Manual. Learn more about this by tuning in to the full episode. [13:57] Proteins: A Double-Edged Sword Amino acids, which build up proteins, act as signalling molecules to turn on the mTOR pathway. The mTOR pathway regulates growth, particularly cell proliferation, in animals and humans. The mTOR pathway is vital to human growth and metabolism, but too little or too much activity can be detrimental. Long-term continuous activity in the mTOR pathway drives cancer cell proliferation and metabolism. [20:05] The Scary Thing About Cancer The terrifying fact about cancer is that it can affect anyone.  Cancers can target different areas of the body, which require specific treatments and protocols. Early detection and diagnosis of cancer will give us the chance to fight back. However, different cancer tests also vary in sensitivity levels. Some are more sensitive than others. [23:06] Why Proteins? Keeping your blood sugar in check is a priority, especially for individuals with metabolic dysregulation. If you practice a low protein diet, your body will naturally crave more carbohydrates. To prevent unnecessary intake of carbohydrates, keeping a balanced high-protein diet will be a good step.  [25:56] Should You Fast? For individuals at the heavier side of the weight spectrum, fasting can help with their therapy. People on the leaner side of the spectrum, on the other hand, should refrain from prolonged fasting. It may result in loss of muscle mass. Exercise and fasting provide ‘good stress,' which can upregulate the body's antioxidant system, anti-inflammatory systems, and NPK signalling pathways. However, too much stress can break down the body. Always remember to do both in moderation. The body needs a period of recovery and feeding to reap the benefits of exercise and fasting. [32:32] Considerations for Fasting According to Prof Layman and Dr Phillips, two solid inputs of proteins help stimulate muscle protein synthesis a day.   Teenagers and young adults require around 15-20 grams to maximize muscle protein synthesis. Meanwhile, middle-aged to older individuals need 40 grams of protein for optimal muscle protein synthesis. Extreme fasting can pose a high risk of accelerating muscle breakdown. Getting the right amount of protein for muscle synthesis is important because our bone health also gradually degenerates as we age.  Falls and trips are one of the top causes of mortality in older adults. Our foot and ankle muscles should be strong enough in and around to prevent such accidents.  [36:30] Checking Your Bone-Building Markers  Fasting or insufficient food intake after exercise is also detrimental to bone health. The body's bone-building markers are low during the period after exercise. Factoring in your day's program for your carbohydrate intake can be beneficial. Bone marker retention improves with high omega-three intake.   [39:57] The Truth About Oils Vegetable oils are usually dubbed as “bad” oils since they upregulate inflammation in the body. Processing may heat these oils and destabilize them, which leads to oxidation of the oils.  Oxidized oils are atherogenic. This means that they promote the thickening or hardening of arteries due to fatty plaque build-up. Placing oils in plastic containers, such as in commercially available oils, can also cause plasticizers to seep into the oil. A high seed oil diet also means a lot of processed or refined carbohydrate content from the preservatives. [44:42] Strategies for a Healthy Nutrition Going organic is a privilege. Depending on a person's access and budget, there will be times when commercial, processed food will be the only way to go. In cases like this, keeping things in moderation will be key. Personality has an impact on becoming successful. Success follows if you live a balanced lifestyle. Becoming self-aware is a good step towards a more balanced, healthy life.  [55:12] Optimising Health During the Pandemic Mikki laments the lack of discussion about health in the context of COVID-19. Advocacy plays a heavy role in policymaking during this pandemic.  Resiliency and protection from the virus still depend on how fundamentally healthy you are. COVID-19 is seen from an epidemiological or immunological point of view. However, the pandemic also has influenced social and cognitive aspects of life.  People should exercise critical thinking instead of blindly following mandates. 7 Powerful Quotes [06:30] (On nutrition in the academe) ‘It's like having done study to work out that you have a super good brain. You are able and capable of doing it, but it has taught you to think in one particular way.'   [20:20] ‘It feels like you get ahead in terms of different treatments, different protocols sort of coming out. But then, every cancer is so different, like a completely different disease.'   [24:15] ‘This is what the research tells us: that you don't have to use research, you just sort of intuitively know if you're propping up your energy because you're trying to rescue your blood sugars on an hour by hour basis. The thing that your body wants is carbs. And it's actually the last thing that it needs.'   [27:24] On repeated and heavy stress on the body: ‘Coming from an ultramarathon background — for health, for toughness, for the sporting endeavor, for the goals and the bloody adventure — yes. For health? No.'   [30:01] ‘If you think about energy expenditure and energy input, if you've got a high energy expenditure, it likes a high energy input to keep those those metabolic pathways nourished, if you like. But then, you move into a phase of low energy output and low energy intake, and again, your body quite likes it, too. It's good to give your body a bit of a rest.'   [41:15] Whenever you put fat in plastic, it just means that the plasticizers from the container can seep into that food source. That's why I recommend that anyone with any sort of leftovers or whatever, if it's a steamer that they're using a plastic container, put down some baking paper, put something down so there's a barrier between the plastic [and food].'   [48:33] ‘Mum would not be here if I hadn't, and we as a family, hadn't sacrificed one hell of a lot to get back and on a day to day basis, ongoing. That's what you do for your loved one. For me, it's important to get the people to understand this is a journey.' 232 Graham Allison on how China's rising global power could lead to superpower conflict—or something else.

It takes a lot to impress Professor Graham Allison when it comes to geopolitics. He is, after all, the Cold Warrior's Cold Warrior—as one of America's most influential defense policy analysts and advisors, he was twice awarded the Defense Department's highest civilian honor for his work on nuclear disarmament with Russia. He's a former Assistant Secretary of Defense, former director of the Council on Foreign Relations, a founding member of the Trilateral Commission, and a renowned political scientist who has served as dean of the Kennedy School and head of the school's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Yet even Allison says he marvels at the rapid transformation of China, the world's rising economic, technological, and military superpower, and he says it's well past time for the United States and the rest of the world to hear some hard truths about China's power and potential dominance of world affairs during the 21st Century. To explain how China has not only caught up with, but in numerous cases surpassed, the United States, Allison and a group of colleagues are writing a series of five research papers on the key areas of economics, technological advancement, military power, diplomatic influence, and ideology. The third paper, on China's extraordinary rise as an economic superpower, states that while some may be tempted to still see China as a developing country, the truth is that it has been adding the equivalent of the entire economy of India to its GDP every four years and that the number of people in the Chinese middle class—some 400 million—now far outnumber the entire population of the United States.Meanwhile, China is either catching up or leading in foundational technologies of the 21st century like AI, quantum computing, and green tech, while recent war games predict that China's modernized, expanded military would likely win a military conflict over Taiwan. Graham Allison talks about China's rise and what could be the next great superpower rivalry—but also about the possibilities for a new paradigm for the US-China relationship that goes beyond Cold War thinking.About the Guest:Graham Allison is the Douglas Dillon Professor of Government at Harvard University where he has taught for five decades.  Allison is a leading analyst of national security with special interests in nuclear weapons, Russia, China, and decision-making.  Allison was the “Founding Dean” of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, and until 2017, served as Director of its Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. As Assistant Secretary of Defense in the first Clinton Administration, Dr. Allison received the Defense Department's highest civilian award, the Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service, for "reshaping relations with Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan to reduce the former Soviet nuclear arsenal." This resulted in the safe return of more than 12,000 tactical nuclear weapons from the former Soviet republics and the complete elimination of more than 4,000 strategic nuclear warheads previously targeted at the United States and left in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus when the Soviet Union disappeared.Professor Allison is the author of numerous books, including: “Destined for War: Can America and China Escape Thucydides's Trap?” (2017), “Lee Kuan Yew: The Grand Master's Insights on China, the United States and the World” (2013), “Nuclear Terrorism: The Ultimate Preventable Catastrophe” (2004) and “Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis (1971).As "Founding Dean" of the modern Kennedy School, under his leadership, from 1977 to 1989, a small, undefined program grew twenty-fold to become a major professional school of public policy and government.Professor Allison was the organizer of the Commission on America's National Interests (1996 and 2000), a founding member of the Trilateral Commission, a Director of the Council on Foreign Relations. He was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. He also has a Bachelor of Sports Science with First Class Honors in Biomechanics to his name as well as a deep seated love for the sport of running himself. As a coach he manages all levels of athletes; from recreational runners to elite middle distance athletes with a scientific and research driven methodology. Ben, has an uncanny ability to articulate and explain scientific 'mumbo jumbo' into simple, easy to understand terms, appropriate for any runner. Ben is also a trusted facilitator for Athletics WA, Athletics Australia and the World Athletics and increasingly plays a significant role in the ongoing development of Coaches through the Front Runner Academy. Ben has just so much coaching wisdom,  I just found myself nodding in appreciation the whole conversation! I loved this chat and took a lot away from it and I know many others will benefit from it too.  This is once again a must listen for all runners and coaches, please share this episode with all those that you feel will benefit from listening to it! In this episode, Ben shares some brilliant points about coaching runners, that I'm certain so many will gain from hearing. Such as; -Tailor your coaching to the individual, be clear on where they are at, where they want to go? -Be clear on the 'purpose' of each training session, the 'why'. -Be careful not to do 'too much all at once', 'everything is a trade-off'. 'If you are building something, you're taking away the opportunity to build something else.' -Be careful of just using a myopic lens to view training and thereby being too reactive; 'every horse is allowed a bad run.' Take a step back, use a wider lens. Thanks again for your time and a brilliant chat, Ben!

In this episode, Founder and CEO of top rated review site TrustRadius- Vinay Bhagat discusses his entrepreneurial journey while also breaking down the future of the SaaS marketplace. About Vinay and TrustRadius Vinay is a serial entrepreneur who conceived TrustRadius after experiencing challenges when buying enterprise solutions at his last company. Prior to founding TrustRadius and his earlier company – Convio, Vinay served as a Director at Trilogy Software and a Consultant at Bain & Company in London, Hong Kong and Kiev. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School where he graduated as a Baker Scholar, an MS Engineering Economic Systems from Stanford University, and a MA Engineering Information Sciences from Cambridge University with First Class Honors. When he’s not working, Vinay loves spending time with his kids, swimming and the occasional squash game. Top ten takeaways from the episode: “The epiphany for TrustRadius came when we were procuring technology to run our own business. In one case, we rolled out a tool that wasn’t the right fit for our team. Without doing sufficient diligence to see how the product would work in our case led to a great degree of buyer’s remorse!” “3 Trillion Dollars are spent on enterprise technology purchase every year. Businesses need trusted buyer reviews to make the right technology choice.” “One of the rules we always follow – Put the Buyer First.” “The SaaS marketplace is proliferating. Software will become more pervasive. And with time, the idea of owning a software will eventually be replaced by subscription-only models.” “The democratization of IT purchasing boosts the demand for trusted buyer review sites like ours.” “When it comes to customer reviews, people come to read them because they are looking for the other side of the coin – they want to understand what the cons are for a particular tech product.” “No longer are people choosing technologies purely on the basis of a brand name anymore.” “We’ve seen a tremendous growth across the board in martech. There are certain categories like Customer Data Platforms that are gaining popularity.” “Having a more systematic way to gather customer feedback will be more and more critical.” “The combination of a very focused advertising campaign teamed with a strong conversion page can be a compelling strategy for any Account-based Marketing strategy.” About the podcast Sunny Side Up is a series of 15-minute podcasts. Leaders and innovators share what they’ve learned in the B2B tech sector on topics related to marketing, product management, sales, and leadership.

“I’m always on a mission. It doesn’t mean that the mission is necessarily entirely apparent to me... even now, I’m not quite clear what it is that creates that shape. Although I think there is something about storytelling and really understanding what’s happening in the world. A sense of investigation and trying to get to the bottom of what’s really going on is part of it.” My guest this episode is New York Times CEO, Mark Thompson. Born in London, he grew up in Hertfordshire, UK. After graduating from Oxford University with a First Class Honors in English, he joined the BBC as a Trainee, quickly working his way up through the ranks, launching shows such as ‘Watchdog’ and ‘Breakfast Time’, before various stints as Editor on flagship news shows such as Newsnight, the Nine O’Clock News and Panorama. He became controller for BBC Two and was then appointed Director of Television, before leaving the BBC in 2002 to become CEO of Channel 4.  In 2004, he returned to take up the role of Director General at the BBC, during which time he reshaped the organization to meet the challenge of the digital age, with the launch of services such as the BBC iPlayer. On November 12th, 2012, he became President and CEO of the New York Times, making him responsible for leading the company’s strategy, operations and business units. Mark has been instrumental in accelerating the pace of The Times’s digital transformation. Under his leadership, The Times became the first news organization in the world to pass the one million digital-only subscription mark.  Having served at the helm of world-class media companies during the course of a career spanning over four decades, I was fascinated to hear more about what purpose and fulfilment mean to Mark. We talked all about: how he navigated the BBC in his early career, and how he eventually came to lead an organisation in which he started as a trainee. We also touched on moving to New York, the challenges he faces as the CEO of the New York Times, as well as his future ambitions.  Follow me: Twitter: @katiephilo (http://www.twitter.com/katiephilo) Instagram: @katiephilo (https://www.instagram.com/katiephilo) www.katiephilo.com (https://www.katiephilo.com/)

Corruption has become a hot topic in Public International Law in recent years. In particular, its prevention has been the subject of numerous treaties and soft law instruments, and it has been wielded as a defence to both investment treaty claims and commercial contract claims (which in turn raises questions of private international law). Yet the source and theoretical underpinnings of a supposed international norm prohibiting corruption remains opaque. Tribunals and commentators make reference to “international public policy,” but the question remains whether the supposed prohibition of corruption is a rule of international law, and where it features in the hierarchy of norms. We propose to examine (i) the current “state of play” (i.e., the various ways in which international law addresses and reprimands corruption), (ii) whether Public International Law prohibits corruption and, if so, the source and status of that norm; and (iii) what the future of international anti-corruption efforts might look like. At this ESMT Open Lecture, Harvard professor Niall Ferguson discussed and debated issues raised in his latest book Civilization: The West and the Rest. About the book: If in the year 1411 you had been able to circumnavigate the globe, you would have been most impressed by the dazzling civilizations of the Orient. The Forbidden City was under construction in Ming Beijing; in the Near East, the Ottomans were closing in on Constantinople. By contrast, England would have struck you as a miserable backwater ravaged by plague, bad sanitation and incessant war. The other quarrelsome kingdoms of Western Europe - Aragon, Castile, France, Portugal and Scotland - would have seemed little better. As for fifteenth-century North America, it was an anarchic wilderness compared with the realms of the Aztecs and Incas. The idea that the West would come to dominate the Rest for most of the next half millennium would have struck you as wildly fanciful. And yet it happened. What was it about the civilization of Western Europe that allowed it to trump the outwardly superior empires of the Orient? The answer, Niall Ferguson argues, was that the West developed six "killer applications" that the Rest lacked: competition, science, democracy, medicine, consumerism and the work ethic. The key question today is whether or not the West has lost its monopoly on these six things. If so, Ferguson warns, we may be living through the end of Western ascendancy. Civilization takes readers on their own extraordinary journey around the world - from the Grand Canal at Nanjing to the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul; from Machu Picchu in the Andes to Shark Island, Namibia; from the proud towers of Prague to the secret churches of Wenzhou. It is the story of sailboats, missiles, land deeds, vaccines, blue jeans and Chinese Bibles. It is the defining narrative of modern world history. About the speaker: Niall Ferguson is Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University and William Ziegler Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford University, and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. Born in Glasgow in 1964, Niall Ferguson graduated from Magdalen College with First Class Honors in 1985. After two years as a Hanseatic Scholar in Hamburg and Berlin, he took up a research fellowship at Christ’s College, Cambridge, in 1989, subsequently returning to Oxford where he was appointed professor of Political and Financial History in 2000. Two years later he left for the US where he took up the Herzog Chair in Financial History at the Stern Business School, New York University, before moving to Harvard in 2004. Niall Ferguson is a regular contributor to press, television, and radio on both sides of the Atlantic and a prolific commentator on contemporary politics and economics.
