This week, I'm joined by author Kelsey Osgood to discuss her recent book “Godstruck: Seven Women's Unexpected Journeys To Religious Conversion.” The book, which profiles women who traded secular lives for religious communities such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, evangelical Christianity, Quakerism, Orthodox Judaism, Saudi-based Islam, and even the Amish faith, is fascinating in its own right. But we also discuss Kelsey's previous book about her struggle with and recovery from anorexia, which overlaps with her religious transformation in some surprising ways. In that book, How To Disappear Completely, Kelsey wrote not just about anorexia itself but the culture surrounding it, notably the “peak sad girl” era of the late 1990s through early 2000s. The therapeutic approach that accompanied it, she argues, took universal human questions that have been asked for millennia and repackaged them as personal neuroses to be indulged and then solved — or, more often, deemed unsolvable. Her conversion to Judaism and participation in an Orthodox community helped reframe her entire way of thinking and changed her life for the better. GUEST BIO Kelsey Osgood is the author of How to Disappear Completely: On Modern Anorexia, which was chosen for the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Program, and Godstruck: Seven Women's Unexpected Journeys to Religious Conversion, which came out in April from Viking. Her work has appeared online or in print at The Atlantic, The New York Times, Harper's, and the New Yorker, among other outlets. Want to hear the whole conversation? Upgrade your subscription here. In this engaging episode of the Psychedelics Today podcast, host Joe Moore sits down with Karina Bashir, an attorney working at the intersection of law, business ethics, and psychedelics. Karina, of counsel with Antithesis Law and an active member of the psychedelic community, shares her unique journey from human rights advocacy into the evolving field of psychedelic law. The conversation explores her presentation at Harvard on psychedelics and monotheistic religions, and her efforts to bridge the gap between Islamic communities and psychedelic-assisted healing. She discusses the legal frameworks she navigates to support clients in the psychedelic ecosystem, the spiritual depth of Sufism, and the expansive tradition of Islamic philosophy and mysticism. If you're intrigued by the intersections of religion, law, and psychedelic healing, this episode offers deep insights and hopeful perspectives.

You wake up already tired. The mind's racing before your feet even touch the ground. You pray, but it feels like a routine. You open the Qur'an, but the words blur. You smile, you function… but inside, you're drained. Some days, you're not even sad. Just numb. On edge. Like you're bracing for something, but you don't know what. You try everything, you listen to reminders… but your heart still feels far. Unmoved. Heavy. And in the quiet moments, that lingering thought creeps in: “Why do I still feel like this… even when I'm trying?” In this powerful reminder, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan gets straight to what most of us avoid talking about. He brings to light the root of that restlessness, the reason behind the inner noise, the tightness, the emptiness, even while doing all the “right” things. If you've been feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed, or just off, and you've been searching for peace but can't seem to feel it, this is for you. Not vague advice. Not surface-level comfort. But something real. Something your heart might've been needing all along. #SecurityCode For centuries, the Druze—a liminal community, whose faith incorporates elements of Islam, Christianity and older religions—have fought to retain their autonomy, allying with Israel against the Palestinians, the Lebanese Leftists against Hizbollah, and President Bashar Al-Asad's Alevi-led regime against Sunni jihadists and tribes. Now, though, a bloody showdown is looming.
Much of world history is Indian history. Home today to one in four people, the subcontinent has long been densely populated and deeply connected to Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas through migration and trade. In this magisterial history, Audrey Truschke tells the fascinating story of the region historically known as India--which includes today's India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and parts of Afghanistan--and the people who have lived there. A sweeping account of five millennia, from the dawn of the Indus Valley Civilization to the twenty-first century, this engaging and richly textured narrative chronicles the most important political, social, religious, intellectual, and cultural events. And throughout, it describes how the region has been continuously reshaped by its astonishing diversity, religious and political innovations, and social stratification. Here, readers will learn about Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam, and Sikhism; the Vedas and Mahabharata; Ashoka and the Mauryan Empire; the Silk Road; the Cholas; Indo-Persian rule; the Mughal Empire; European colonialism; national independence movements; the 1947 Partition of India; the recent rise of Hindu nationalism; the challenges of climate change; and much more. Emphasizing the diversity of human experiences on the subcontinent, the book presents a wide range of voices, including those of women, religious minorities, lower classes, and other marginalized groups. You cannot understand India today without appreciating its deeply contested history, which continues to drive current events and controversies. A comprehensive and innovative book, India is essential reading for anyone who is interested in the past, present, or future of the subcontinent. Audrey Truschke is professor of South Asian history at Rutgers University, Newark. She is the bestselling author of Aurangzeb: The Life and Legacy of India's Most Controversial King and other books. After Revelation: The Rabbinic Past in the Medieval Islamic World offers a dynamic new perspective on medieval Jewish legal thought and its integration in the wider Islamic world. Here, Marc D. Herman demonstrates that Jews were fully conversant in their contemporaries' ideas about revelation, law, and legal interpretation. Bookended by the two luminaries of medieval Judaism--Saadia Gaon and Moses Maimonides--After Revelation analyzes the legal theory that medieval Jews produced in Islamic lands, mostly in Arabic, and reveals previously unrecognized commonalities between Jewish and Islamic constructions of religious law. Herman tackles one of the central doctrines of post-biblical Judaism: that God had supplemented the written Hebrew Bible with an Oral Torah. Tracing this idea from Baghdad to Córdoba to Cairo, he shows that the Oral Torah took many new forms in the medieval Islamic world. After Revelation makes plain that medieval Judaism took the shapes that it did largely because of contact with Islam. In this series Dr. Mufti Abdur-Rahman covers the book titled, 'Essentials of Islamic Spirituality' previously known as 'The Path to Perfection'. Link to book: https://www.whitethreadpress.com/publication/essentials-of-islamic-spirituality/ At a time when the discourse surrounding Islam is generally inauthentic and shallow, The Essentials of Islamic Spirituality presents a much-needed antidote. It goes beyond simply diagnosing the spiritual ailments that afflict us; it puts forward means of eradicating them, so that we as individuals, as communities, and as an Umma can reap the benefits of a spiritual way of life. White Thread Press makes this invaluable work available in elegant and moving prose, while remaining true to its traditional origins. The result, a profound awakening of the heart, is within the reach of all. Those new to the spiritual sciences will delight in the range and profundity of the psychological and spiritual disciplines of Islam, while those already on the Path will gain new insights and perspectives. Shaykh Masihullah Khan, a renowned student of the eminent Mawlana Ashraf ‘Ali Thanawi, wrote Shari'at & Tasawwuf to pass on to future generations of Muslims the numerous benefits of his teacher's wisdom. The teachings gathered here are notes of admonition and encouragement written by a man who has walked the path to his Creator; and at their core, these teachings are sustenance for the ailing hearts and souls of our time.

This episode of Habibi House features Dr. Rudolph “Butch” Ware — historian, author, and one of the most important living scholars of Islam, Black liberation, and decolonial thought. A professor of history at UC Santa Barbara, Ware sits down with us to unpack the stories that empire tried to bury: stories of Sufi rebellion, revolutionary faith, and the sacred legacy of Black Muslims in shaping not just Islam — but global freedom movements.WHAT WE TALK ABOUT:Why there is no Islam without Black peopleHow Sufi orders led anti-colonial revolts across West AfricaWhy liberals fear true solidarity between Black and Arab communitiesWhat it means to reclaim Islam from both empire and whitenessMalcolm X, Palestine, and the revolutionary roots of faithWhy Ware says Islam is inherently radical, and liberals won't save usHow storytelling, family, and love serve as tools for resistanceWHO IS BUTCH WARE?Rudolph “Butch” Ware is a historian of West Africa, Islam, and the Black Muslim world. He's the author of The Walking Qur'an: Islamic Education, Embodied Knowledge, and History in West Africa, and a leading voice in challenging Western narratives around Islam and African history. He speaks at the intersection of Sufism, slavery, liberation theology, and Black diasporic spirituality. His work dismantles colonial myths and re-centers the sacred in our understanding of resistance.KEY QUOTES FROM THE EPISODE:“There is no such thing as Islam without Black people. Islam didn't just show up in Africa — it was born in Africa.”“When the empire suppresses love, joy, and memory — storytelling becomes a revolutionary act.”“Liberalism is fine with coexistence, as long as it doesn't disrupt the structure of violence. That's not liberation.”WHY THIS CONVERSATION MATTERSAt a time when Muslim identity is either flattened or weaponized, Dr. Ware reminds us that faith has always been a tool of both survival and struggle. In a world where Gaza is burning, ICE is raiding, and history is being rewritten in real time, this episode offers truth — rooted in legacy, memory, and resistance.0:00 Intro – Who is Butch Ware?1:35 Growing up Muslim, Southern, and Black4:00 There is no Islam without Black people7:12 How Sufism sparked anti-colonial revolts10:05 Blackness, slavery, and prophetic tradition13:45 Liberalism vs. Revolutionary Islam16:30 Islamophobia, empire, and the theft of history20:55 Malcolm X and Gaza: Solidarity across struggle24:30 Love, storytelling, and decolonizing spirituality29:45 Final message to young Muslims and Black ArabsABOUT HABIBI HOUSEHabibi House is a culture-forward, decolonial, and unfiltered podcast centering MENA voices and their intersections with global liberation.

So, we're starting the final season in this podcast which is on the Dark Ages. But just how dark were they? One of the main themes of this new season will be to show the striking diversity of experience within western Eurasia and North Africa during the period from AD 700 to 1000 since, while the Dark Ages were, in my view, very dark for most of Europe, outside Europe, in the Middle East and North Africa, the period after the fall of the Roman Empire wasn't necessarily that dark. The Dark Ages has become a Euro-centric term for the collapse of Roman civilization in Europe, but of course one of the key things about the Roman Empire was it wasn't just European. We must remember that Rome was essentially a Mediterranean empire which extended into three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. And in Asia and Africa, the period that we in Europe call the Dark Ages was far from dark especially if you were a Muslim since the Islamic caliphates – the Umayyad and then the Abbasid – continued the astonishing rise of Islam after the death of Muhammad. In episode 113, we heard how, at the eastern end of Europe, the Byzantine emperor Leo III defeated an Arab army at the gates of Constantinople in the cold winter of 717/718. This was a turning point in history since it marked the first major setback for the Arabs. But what about the west? And that's where we turn to in this and the next few episodes as the Arabs launch a huge offensive, first, into Visigothic Spain, and then into the heartland of Frankish Gaul or modern-day France. For a free ebook, maps and blogs check out my website nickholmesauthor.comFind my latest book, Justinian's Empire, on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. Chris White, begins a new 11-part series on “The Islamic Antichrist Theory”, popularized by noted author Joel Richardson. He discusses, from the biblical text, why he believes this theory is inaccurate. In today's episode, Chris begins with Daniel 2 concerning the magnificent statue in Nebuchadnezzar's dream, and the kingdoms associates with that statue. Specifically, he addresses the theological, historical and grammatical reasons why the fourth kingdom in Nebuchadnezzar's dream cannot be a reference to the Islamic empire, and must be a reference to Rome. Listen to this clear and thorough introduction to Chris' new series.
You've heard the world's noise about “quiet time” - mindfulness, meditation, deep breaths… but did you ever stop and ask: “Wait, where's this in our Deen?” Let's take a seat (literally) and discover how Islam taught us the power of pausing before it became cool. In this heartfelt session, Shaykh Muhammad Alshareef (rA) takes us behind the scenes of spiritual productivity - where ‘doing nothing' is actually doing everything that matters. Learn why the Prophet ﷺ said that just sitting, waiting for the next prayer, counts as the highest struggle - jihad, ribat! Find out why those awkward, fidgety moments before the Adhan or Iqama are actually prime time for Dua to be accepted. And discover what “Aisha-time” really meant in the Prophet's masjid (hint: no clocks, just pure presence and trust). Whether you're addicted to hustle culture or allergic to sitting still, this talk will flip your perspective. On Saturday evening, I will be joining two of the world's most knowledgeable authorities on the threat posed by “enemies within” in an extremely timely conversation sponsored by Karen Siegemund's American Freedom Alliance. The subject is the “Red-Green Axis” – the increasingly dangerous alliance between Communists and Sharia-supremacists in America. Trevor Loudon and Robert Spencer understand deeply that these totalitarian elements are working together, even though they seek very different end-states – respectively, a world run by Communist China and a global Caliphate ruling according to Islam's Sharia code. What they have in common – as, for that matter, does yet another, allied force, namely those seeking world government dictated by the United Nations – is the immediate objective of taking down the impediment to all their ambitions: the United States. Learn what we must do to thwart these enemies within AmericanFreedomAlliance.org. This is Frank Gaffney.

Donate to our charity partner Baitulmaal here: http://btml.us/thinkingmuslim Help us expand our Muslim media project here: https://www.thinkingmuslim.com/membershipThe Prophet Mohammad PBUH was the first activist in Islam. He lived a mujahid and died a shaheed, dedicating his life to spreading the message of Islam and fighting the injustices of his community of Quraysh and even the two giant powers of the time, the Byzantine and Sassanian empires. And yet today, we have lost the essence of this and strayed from the Prophet's PBUH principle of standing for justice. In today's episode, we discuss how we, as Muslim youth, can follow in the Prophet PBUH path of correcting injustices and emulating the greatest man that ever lived. You think your Iman is safe… that you'll die with it intact, no matter what. But watch how quickly it gets chipped away when doubts come dressed as trends, debates, or posts that sound clever — until your heart's spinning at night, wondering what's true. Your Aqeedah isn't just a label. It's your shield when the world keeps pushing you to blur the lines. And a shield only works if you know what you're holding. Manzoomah Al-Ahsaai isn't just an old poem for scholars to memorise — it's a lifeline. A clear, powerful map of the beliefs every Muslim needs to anchor their heart. In this 5-hour deep dive, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan unpacks each line with proofs from the Qur'an, Sunnah, and the way of the Salaf. You'll see why Tawheed, Qadr, the grave, the scales, and the Day you see Allah — none of it is just theory. It's what keeps your Iman steady when everyone's telling you to loosen your grip. You've got 168 hours for the world's noise this week. Take just five to strengthen what matters more than anything else. Study the kind of Aqeedah that lets you sleep at night when the doubts hit, the debates rage, and your soul whispers: “Where do I stand?” May Allah keep our creed pure and our hearts firm. Watch till the end. Share it with someone who's searching for solid ground right now. And keep building your Aqeedah like the Salaf did — step by step, truth by truth.
