Headline Nonsense - Fox Business: Beware the ticking time bomb hiding in your 401(k) - Required minimum distributions can trigger taxes on Social Security benefits and boost Medicare premiums - This is not a ticking time bomb. This is just reality when you have a lot saved and need to start withdrawals - HOWEVER - there are ways around this and we have helped clients with this. - - Listeners - if you have a 401k and think that you will be paying too much later on - we can take a look at the options... More Retirement Alerts - Social Security running out again.... - Less that 10 year until the reserves are exhausted - The Social Security Administration's newly released 2026 Trustees Report confirms that the federal retirement safety net is less than seven years away from fiscal depletion, as the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) trust fund will completely exhaust its accumulated reserves in the fourth quarter of 2032. - Once the reserve dries up, ongoing tax revenues will cover only 78% of scheduled retirement benefits, according to the report. - Some of the blame is being laid on the OBBBA with higher standard deductions and lower taxes on SS Benefits - "The OBBBA also adds a temporary additional standard deduction for taxpayers over age 65," it says. "As a result, less income tax will be paid on Social Security benefits, and the OASI and DI Trust Funds will receive lower levels of revenue in the future from income taxation of Social Security benefits." PSA - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified a recall of more than 900 cases of Alfredo sauce at its highest risk level after a supplier recalled a dry milk powder ingredient used in the product due to potential salmonella contamination. - The FDA designated the recall as a Class I event, its most serious classification, meaning there is a reasonable probability that use of or exposure to the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. - The Coffee Connexion Co., Inc. - According to the FDA, the product was distributed in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Monday Markets - 5:45PM Sunday night we see an announcement that there is a Deal! - Why 5:45PM???????? - Futures rally, oil drops - This is just days after the market already surged after a Truth Social post last Thursday that said that the US will "soon" sign a deal with IRAN ---- That pushed up markets quite a bit too - Buy the rumor and buy the news... Reality Check - Thursday: Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that “we have a deal that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.” - Monday: 60-day period delay to continue discussions of nuclear issues - Is there a sucker in all of this? $ for IRAN - Supposedly there i some deal... - A $300 billion private fund designed ?to trigger investment into Iran is outlined in the U.S.-Iran framework agreement and more than half that sum has already been committed, a source with ?direct knowledge of the deal told Reuters. - The fund is designed to give both sides an economic incentive to conclude a final deal, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan has not yet been announced as Washington and Tehran prepare to sign on Friday. SpaceX - IPO - Finally! $135 per share - Rose to $160+/- on the debut day - Rather smooth process and very orderly - A total of $85B was raised - due to an add-on additional green-shoe that was allowed ($10B) for institutions. - Rose another $20% on Monday - Retail got about 20% of the deal (down from 30%) Oracle - Oracle Corp. shares declined after the company reported quarterly capital expenses that were higher than estimates, raising investor concerns about the profitability of the AI infrastructure business. - The company expects to spend about $70 billion on net capital expenditures in the current fiscal year, and plans to raise another $40 billion in equity and debt. - Oracle's cloud infrastructure business gained 93% to $5.8 billion, and total cloud revenue is projected to jump about 61% in the quarter ending in August. - The increase of $5B over the course of the year was disconcerting to investors. - Shares dropped the most in over 6 months on the news CPI and PPI - May CPI was mixed but generally cooler on the core reading, with headline CPI up 0.5% month-over-month, matching consensus, while Core CPI rose 0.2%, below the 0.3% consensus and below Briefing's 0.4% estimate. - The softer core CPI reading suggests some easing in underlying consumer inflation pressures, which is the more constructive part of the inflation picture. - May PPI was firmer than expected on the headline reading, with PPI up 1.1% versus 0.7% consensus and 0.8% Briefing estimate, matching the prior month's revised 1.1% pace. - Core PPI rose 0.4%, matching consensus and coming in below the prior month's revised 0.7%, indicating wholesale inflation remained elevated but did not accelerate further on the core measure. - Taken together, the CPI and PPI reports point to a mixed inflation backdrop: consumer-level core inflation looked somewhat better, but producer-level price pressures remained sticky. Cyberdyne - Anthropic announced Claude Fable 5, a Mythos-class model that will be available to its enterprise customers and paid subscribers. - The company unveiled Mythos in April and has limited the rollout because of its advanced cybersecurity capabilities. - Anthropic said Claude Fable 5?s broad release is possible because of new safeguards that block responses in specific high-risk areas. - WAIT! The US government PULLED the plug on Mythos and Fable for any foreign national - From Anthropic - The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Anthropic models will not be affected. OpenAi - Confidentially flies for IPO - Sends financials and IPO materials to regulators - making sue all in good order. - This allows the company to iron out accounting, compliance, and regulatory issues in private without triggering a "media circus" or alerting competitors to their financials Last Friday..... - Nonfarm payrolls jumped a seasonally adjusted 172,000 for the period, down slightly from the upwardly revised 179,000 in April and far above the Dow Jones consensus estimate for 80,000. - The unemployment rate held steady at 4.3%, as expected. - Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% for the month and were up 3.4% over the past year, both in line with the Wall Street consensus. Screwworm - The New World screwworm has been detected in a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas, the first known case of that fly in the United States since 2017. - New World screwworm larvae “burrow into the flesh of living animals, causing serious damage to livestock and economic losses,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. - The USDA and Texas officials are taking immediate action to contain and eradicate the pest. - In December, the Food and Drug Administration granted conditional approval to the topical solution Exzolt Cattle-CA1, which is used to prevent and treat New World screwworm infestations and is produced by Merck & Co. - What is going to happen to beef prices? Real Estate - Nationwide, 5.8% of all home listings were pulled off the market in April, according to Redfin. - Delistings were up 3.8% compared with March. - Atlanta saw the highest share of homes come off the market in April, with 1 in 10 delisted. San Jose, California, followed with roughly 9% pulled, then Los Angeles (7.8%), Dallas (7.8%) and Seattle (7.7%). In other news.... - The Japanese city of Utsunomiya has suspended all 94 of the primary and middle schools ?that it operates on Monday after its ?first-ever bear sighting, a municipal official said. - The city of half-a-million residents about 100 km (60 miles) north of Tokyo said ?the bear was first seen in a residential ?area near a park on Saturday evening. What if agentic AI makes SRE more important, not less? Bennett Gould explains why autonomous AI systems may create more demand for reliability thinking — not less.Everyone seems to think AI is coming for SRE in a hard way.You might have heard the same story:“AI will write the code.”“Agents will handle incidents.”“Copilots will generate the runbooks.”“Automation will reduce operational load.”Yes, the job question is real. If AI can write code, summarize incidents, query observability tools, generate runbooks, and operate across systems, then engineers are right to ask what happens to the work. But here's the part that gets missed: AI does not just automate reliability work. It creates more objects and surface areas that need to be made reliable.Agentic AI is moving from demos into real workflows. These systems are no longer just answering questions. They are querying tools, pulling context, generating changes, and in some cases taking action around production environments. That makes this a Monday morning problem.Teams are already using LLMs for incidents, documentation, observability, infrastructure, and operational decision-making. Somewhere, a team is one demo away from giving an agent access to tools originally designed for humans. That is exactly why I wanted to have this conversation.Bennett Gould is currently a solution engineer at Neubird.ai. His career in SRE and SRE-adjacent work spans large enterprises, cloud, industrial technology, and startups, including AWS, IBM, Siemens, and a YC startup.I wanted to ask him a simple question: What in the agentic AI is happening to SRE?Here are 3 highlights from our talk:1. Agentic AI increases the reliability surface areaThe obvious fear is that AI reduces the need for reliability engineers. Bennett's view was more nuanced. He was clear that engineers still need to adapt. If people do not reskill, stay current, and learn how these systems are forming, there may absolutely be pressure in the job market. But he also argued that AI could create more demand for reliability skills because production complexity is increasing.More code is going into production.More AI-generated code is going into production.More systems that people do not fully understand are going into production. And now autonomous agents are starting to enter production workflows too. That means more surface area. More automation. More operational uncertainty. More ways for things to go wrong.Bennett compared this to Terraform: Infrastructure as code created enormous efficiency gains. But it also created new ways to make very big mistakes very quickly. Before Terraform, most people could not delete all their production resources with a single command. After Terraform, that became technically possible if the system was designed badly enough.Agentic AI follows a similar pattern. With great automation comes great responsibility.Agents can help engineers move faster, query tools, summarize context, and reduce toil. But they can also amplify weak engineering practices, poor boundaries, bad assumptions, and unclear operational ownership. That is not the end of reliability work. That is reliability work entering a new phase.2. Agents can reduce toil, but context is the ceilingOne of the strongest parts of the conversation was Bennett's explanation of where agents can help in incident response. A lot of SRE work involves moving across tools. You may need to query Prometheus, Dynatrace, logs, traces, cloud consoles, ticketing systems, documentation, runbooks, dashboards, and architecture diagrams. The problem is not always that the engineer lacks judgment.Sometimes the problem is that the information is scattered across too many tools, each with its own query language and interface. Bennett gave a simple example: an engineer might be very good at PromQL and very fast when Prometheus is the source of truth. But if the same engineer has to work in a different observability platform with a different query language, their response time can suffer. That is an obvious place where agents can help. The engineer may not need to know every query language perfectly. They need to know what they are looking for and how to reason about the system. The agent can help translate that intent into the right tool calls, queries, and summaries. That could reduce MTTR. It could reduce toil. It could help engineers move faster during incidents. But Bennett also made the limitation clear: You are only as good as the context you have. This is where he introduced two useful concepts:* Context mining* Context distillationContext mining means proactively finding the information that might be useful in a given operational situation.Context distillation means taking large amounts of information — runbooks, Confluence pages, diagrams, documentation, prior incidents — and reducing it into the minimum useful context an LLM or agent can use. That sounds powerful. But there is a catch. Sometimes the context simply is not there. Many of the largest and most complex organizations still run legacy systems where knowledge lives in people's heads, stale documentation, tribal memory, and unwritten assumptions. There may not be a clean process for turning that into usable context. That matters because agents do not magically understand your system. They work with the context they are given. If the context is missing, outdated, or wrong, the agent's usefulness maxes out early.3. Agentic systems are not just LLM demosA basic LLM workflow is relatively easy to demo:You give it a prompt. You connect a few tools. You add some APIs.You get a useful answer. That is impressive, but it is not the same thing as running an agentic system in a meaningful production environment.Bennett made a useful analogy here: running your own infrastructure versus using a hyperscaler.Cloud providers removed a lot of undifferentiated heavy lifting. Most companies do not want to spend half their time racking servers, managing data centers, and dealing with low-level infrastructure when they are trying to serve customers.Agentic systems create similar questions:* What parts of the work should be handled by the system?* What parts still need engineering discipline?* And what has to exist around the model before it is safe and useful? That surrounding structure is where the real work begins. Bennett called this harness engineering. Once you move beyond an LLM demo, you have to think about memory, learning, tool usage, identity, federation, security, evaluations, and guardrails. That is a very different problem from “the model gave a good answer on my laptop.” SREs know why that distinction matters. “It works on my machine” is not an acceptable reliability strategy.A runbook that recovers a thousand-node database cannot be non-deterministic, undocumented, and dependent on someone's local setup. If it is part of the operational backbone, it needs to be reliable.Agentic AI does not remove that requirement. It makes it more important.Bonus: Agents expose weak engineering practicesAgentic AI not only introduces new problems but it also reveals old ones.* Weak APIs.* Brittle runbooks.* Missing context.* Poor evals.* Unclear tool boundaries.* Operational shortcuts.Systems that were designed assuming careful human use may behave very differently when AI agents start using them. That is why this conversation matters for SRE.Agentic AI is not only a productivity story. It is a reliability story. It forces teams to ask whether their existing practices are strong enough for a world where more actions can be generated, recommended, or executed by autonomous systems. The silver lining for reliability workAgentic AI does not remove the need for reliability thinking. It raises the bar for it. The tools will change. The workflows will change. Some tasks will absolutely be automated or reshaped. But the hardest parts of reliability are still the hard parts:* understanding the system* knowing the trade-offs* building reliable operational processes* making good judgment calls under uncertainty and* owning the outcome when something changes in productionThat is why SRE does not disappear in an agentic AI world. It becomes one of the disciplines that makes the agentic AI world survivable. So if your team is already using AI around incidents, observability, runbooks, infrastructure, or production workflows, the question is not whether the future is coming. The future is already in the workflow. The real question is whether your reliability practices are ready for it. This is a public episode. Reversal - Software stocks bounced this week on strong results from Snowflake and Okta, which both recorded their best days on record. - The results signal that investors may have been too quick to declare the end of software with the emergence of artificial intelligence. - Even as AI displaces certain tools and job functions, many software companies continue to show growth, assisted by their own AI products. - The iShares Expanded Tech-Software exchange-traded fund rose 8% this week and closed May up 21%, the best monthly performance for the ETF since October 2001. - With this month's rally, the iShares software ETF is only down 3.8% for the year, still badly trailing the Nasdaq, which has gained 18% in 2026. Snowflake - Amazon said Wednesday that its cloud division has landed a $6 billion spending commitment from Snowflake, which includes the use of the company's custom silicon and chips for artificial intelligence. - Snowflake's purchase of services and technology from Amazon Web Services will occur over five years, according to a press release about the agreement. - Snowflake intends to expand its use of Amazon's Graviton general-purpose chips, as well as cloud-based graphics processing units for AI. - Snowflake and Amazon are frenemies - they compete but also partner with each other. - Stock up 36% on this news DELL!!!!!!!!!!!! - Dell Technologies Inc. shares surged due to an outlook for annual sales that far surpassed expectations on demand for servers that power artificial intelligence work. - Revenue in the fiscal year ending in January 2027 will be about $167 billion, including $60 billion from the sale of AI servers, topping analysts' average estimate of $142.1 billion. - The company booked $24.4 billion in AI orders and generated $16.1 billion in AI server sales in the quarter ended May 1, with Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke saying “The AI opportunity shows no signs of slowing.” - The shares surged 33% to $420.91 at the close Friday in New York, the biggest single-day increase in the more than seven years since the hardware maker returned to the public markets after a five-year hiatus as a private firm. - Up 150% YTD More Dell - New XPS 13 at $699 targets price-sensitive market - Aims to compete with MacBook Neo, lower-end Windows devices - Launch amid global memory chip crunch to gain market share - WINING OVER JCD: -- 13.4-inch screen (very compact footprint) Options: 2K / 2.5K LCD (120Hz) OLED touchscreen (higher contrast)| - Very thin bezels ? almost edge?to?edge screen - Weighs 2.2 lbs - one of the lightes out there and a rival to Apple's Macbook Neo Infighting - OpenAI may release multi-chip AI software, challenging Nvidia's (NVDA) ecosystem advantage, according to The Information - Oh, and NVDA is now releasing a CPU for PCs that is aggrevating Intel and AMD Kaboom! - Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket exploded in a massive fireball while undergoing a test on a Florida launchpad, dealing a major setback to the company. - The explosion is the latest blow to New Glenn's reputation as a reliable alternative to SpaceX's Falcon 9, and Blue Origin's launch schedule is certain to suffer significant delays. - The incident will also affect Amazon's ambitions to build out its Leo satellite network and may delay Blue Origin's role in NASA's Artemis program, which aims to send humans back to the moon. - As important as it will be for Blue Origin to diagnose the cause of the rocket explosion, it could take many months to repair its launchpad in Florida. Taking Down - Really? - BlackRock Inc. is trimming its bet on stocks across its model-portfolio business as US equities surge to record highs following a strong earnings season. - The firm cut its overweight position in equities from 3% to 1%, triggering billions of dollars of flows between BlackRock's exchange-traded funds. - BlackRock remains confident in equities and will maintain positions that bet on growing corporate profits, artificial intelligence and government spending, but is rotating away from longer-dated US debt in favor of global fixed-income and liquid alternatives. Slight - SpaceX is targeting a valuation of at least $1.8 trillion in its initial public offering, according to people familiar with the matter. - The company is seeking to raise as much as $75 billion, which would make it the biggest IPO of all time, and is expected to start formal marketing of its IPO as soon as June 4. -SpaceX had $18.7 billion in revenue in 2025, and the company's pitch to investors shows its evolution into an AI services and infrastructure giant with a total addressable market of $28.5 trillion. - 3-5% of the shares will be floated (TIGHT) Strategy: keep supply constrained, which: supports price discovery maintains founder control creates early scarcity dynamics - - - SpaceX has reserved 5% of the shares ?in its planned initial public offering for certain employees and individuals selected by its executive officers, exempting them from post-IPO lock-up restrictions AND.. Its system can control multiple displays with different aspect ratios at the same time by using a single-on-chip, which is different from other conventional in-vehicle display systems, LG said. - But 24% on this news? - More reason that the KOSPI is moving higher No One Care - But... - Inflation has been above the 2% target for 5 years now - Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari said Thursday that bringing down inflation in the U.S. remains his top priority, warning that consumer prices are still “much too high.”| - Speaking to CNBC's Kaori Enjoji at the Bank of Japan-IMES Conference, Kashkari said that the U.S. central bank would continue taking a “balanced approach” to its dual mandate of price stability and full employment. - 5 YEARS! ---- What that tells us is that the Fed is totally unable to do anything about inflation .... Are we the only ones that see that? Inside Baseball - From a colegie that will go un-named. --- Let's just say he is someone who knows what they are talking about and runs BIG money ----- This is what he said to me..... - Apparently, oil execs were opining with POTUS in meetings yesterday that oil inventories are at alarmingly low levels and oil prices could soon skyrocket (I might soften that language a bit but they know the oil biz better than me) if SoH does not open soon. - I ran a few numbers on total oil inventories including and excluding the SPR. - Total supplies are 10th percentile vs history (although that includes a period when the SPR ramped from 0 to 600mln barrels in the 1980's). - Today it is 4th percentile if you start from 1990 when the SPR was basically full. - The 4 week net and % draw the last 3 weeks are the largest draws of all time. - And not surprising the 1 week net and % draw of the SPR are also the 2 largest draws of all time the last 2 weeks. Surprised - No.... --- This is another story similar to what we saw a few months ago - Taiwan prosecutors suspect that three individuals smuggled at least one shipment of Nvidia Corp. AI chips to China after first exporting them to Japan. - The trio was detained for allegedly falsifying documents related to exports of Super Micro Computer Inc. servers containing advanced Nvidia chips, which the US has barred from sale to China without a license. - Taiwan authorities seized about 50 servers for which they accuse the trio of preparing fraudulent export documents, but at least one shipment had already gone through Taiwan customs and made it to Hong Kong. Under/Over? - Tesla will be somehow folder/merged or taken over by SpaceX in an all stock deal - Tesla market cap is $1.6 Trillion so that will be a tough one to take on as SpaceX is about equal in size. ---- If this happens, when ? Mini Retirement - Is this a THING? - A mini retirement is when you take a planned break from working, usually for a few months to a couple of years, instead of waiting until age 65+ to fully retire. - Tim Feerris popularized this... (4 day workweek dude) Step 1: Work & save aggressively 2–10+ years Build a specific “freedom fund” Step 2: Take time off 3 months to 2 years Travel, recharge, pursue interests, or experiment with new ideas Step 3: Return to work Same career… or pivot to something new Then repeat if desired. Listen, there is still bad news. More AI stuff and more studio closings and people losing their jobs. It's still pretty bleak. And it isn't likely to change for quite some time. But, in an effort to not yet again sound like a broken record of just horrible news every week, I'd like to pose a question to you. If you could wipe the memory of any game you've played, so that you could experience it again for the very first time, what would you pick? What game made such an impression on you that going through it again, with a fresh mind and fresh eyes, would be your choice? Half-Life 1/2 were amazing games with mechanics we'd never seen before at the time, but if only your memory of it was wiped, would it be what it was then by playing it today? I had a few picks for myself. Mark Of The Ninja was one. It's a game I've not played in a long time and would likely feel like playing it for the first time. Another was Bioshock Infinite (probably Bioshock 1, as well). Those two games, while playing them wouldn't seem at all much different than anything else out there…it's their stories that I want to experience again for the first time. And it's a bit hard for me to find something else like that – although I'm sure they exist. I just can't think of them at the moment. Maybe Braid. Maybe. So let us know what your picks are. And maybe for a little bit we aren't thinking about job losses and AI running up the tab on all our fun stuff and everything else going on at the moment. At least for a little bit. At this point playing ANY Splinter Cell game would feel like I'm playing it for the first time again. Ubisoft, it's been 4,584 days since a new Splinter Cell game (non-animated series or guest spot in another game franchise, remake, BBC radio drama, or VR exclusive) was released. Also, there's been 1,626 job losses in the gaming industry since January 1, 2026.

It's not digestible or biodegradable in any fashion. There is even a commercial running in Nashville, Tennessee, using the same rubric, suggesting microplastics may exist in your kitchen faucet. It just Ain't so!By the way, if it did, you would choke on your first glass. No living organism can absorb or digest any amount of plastic. More AI notes for y'all. They're not bad! Episode Link: Find this and other episodes at The Conditional Release Program on RedCircle.Recorded: May 5, 2025 (two days after the Australian Federal Election)Hosts: Jack the Insider & Hong Kong JackIn this episode, The Two Jacks dissect the stunning Australian federal election results, explore a surprising political turnaround in Canada, ponder the next Pope, and touch on global political shifts from the UK to Germany, and the latest from Trump's America.(00:00:00) Introduction & Australian Election: An Orderly Affair Jack the Insider and Hong Kong Jack kick off by praising the smooth and festive nature of the Australian federal election, highlighting the efficiency of the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) and the beloved "democracy sausage."(00:02:21) The Pre-Poll Phenomenon A discussion on the increasing trend of pre-polling, with over half of Australians casting their vote before election day. The hosts debate the merits of shortening the pre-polling period, with Hong Kong Jack lamenting the decline of traditional Saturday voting.(00:06:06) Betting Blunders & Historic Results Labor's remarkable journey from $15 outsiders to $1.07 unbackable favourites to form government is reviewed. The episode highlights key historical markers:Anthony Albanese: The first Prime Minister re-elected since 2004.A significant Labor victory, with Albanese leading the first government in Australian political history to increase its majority in a second term.(00:09:17) Seat Swings, Mea Culpas & The Greens' Tumble The hosts reflect on their pre-election predictions against the reality of significant swings to Labor (e.g., a 10% swing in Bennelong). Labor is projected to win around 90 seats. The Greens: A tough election, with leader Adam Bandt likely to lose his seat in Melbourne. Zoe Daniel (Teal) is also in a precarious position in Goldstein. The Greens may lose Ryan back to the Liberals and potentially face no representation in the House of Representatives.(00:13:38) A UK Perspective & Labor's Resurgence Hong Kong Jack shares insights from the UK, where observers noted Labor's landslide and the "leaderless, rudderless, pointless" state of the Coalition. This challenges the narrative that incumbents always lose, citing recent Canadian and Australian results.(00:16:27) Liberal Campaign Catastrophe: A "Don't Do This" Case Study A deep dive into the Liberal Party's "dreadful campaign," marked by:The ill-conceived work-from-home policy, poorly communicated by Senator Jane Hume and lacking consultation.A string of policy backflips and poorly planned announcements (e.g., fuel excise cut, Melbourne airport rail funding announced at a winery).Peter Dutton has accepted responsibility for the campaign's failures.(00:22:46) Trump's Take & The Muted MAGA Effect Donald Trump's reaction to the Australian election (congratulating "Albert" while feigning ignorance of Dutton) is discussed. The hosts agree that MAGA influence was minimal, with Albanese's message of "kindness is not weakness" resonating more strongly.(00:25:13) The Liberal Party's Existential Crossroads A critical analysis of the Liberal Party's future, having lost traditional heartland seats and failed to broaden its appeal beyond an aging demographic. The danger of vacating the political centre and the flawed strategy of chasing a new "working-class" constituency.Hong Kong Jack draws parallels to Labor's wilderness years (1977, 1996), emphasizing the need for honest self-reflection for any chance of recovery.Labor's structural advantages: benefiting from Green preferences and a more unified progressive base compared to a fragmented right-wing, further diluted by entities like Clive Palmer's party.(00:39:58) Senate Snapshot: Stability Prevails An overview of the projected Senate makeup across the states:NSW & VIC: Likely Labor 3, Liberals 2, Greens 1.QLD: Labor 2, Libs 2, Greens 1, with One Nation's Malcolm Roberts likely re-elected.TAS: Jacqui Lambie expected to return.ACT: Independent David Pocock secures his quota alongside a Labor senator.Overall, the Senate composition is unlikely to see dramatic changes. David Pocock is commended for his diligent work.(00:42:25) Who Will Lead the Liberals? A Party in Search of Direction Speculation on the future leadership of the Liberal Party, with few obvious candidates emerging from a depleted frontbench. Dan Tehan is mentioned as a possible moderate caretaker, though the path back to government looks long and arduous.(00:45:58) Albanese: The New "Labor God" & Chalmers' Contribution Anthony Albanese is lauded for his historic achievement, with Jim Chalmers highlighted as a key performer and media operator for Labor, despite Hong Kong Jack's gentle ribbing about his lengthy essays.(00:48:56) Canadian Politics Upended: Liberals' Shock Comeback A look at the Canadian election, where the Liberals achieved a stunning turnaround, with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre facing a potential seat loss. Donald Trump's inflammatory rhetoric towards Canada is seen as a contributing factor to this shift.(00:52:12) Vatican Watch: Speculating on the Next Pope With Pope Francis's papacy in its later stages, the hosts discuss potential successors. Italian cardinals like Pietro Parolin are frontrunners, but names from Africa and the Philippines also surface. Hong Kong Jack references Morris West's The Shoes of the Fisherman for insights into papal conclaves.(00:55:52) Sir Tony Blair on Net Zero & The Reality of Fossil Fuels Former UK PM Sir Tony Blair's call for a rethink of Net Zero policies due to cost implications is examined. Global fossil fuel consumption continues to rise (gas +2.7%, coal +1%, oil +0.8%), underscoring the challenge of the energy transition.(01:00:24) Trump's First 100 Days (Again): Low Approval, Tariff Troubles & Papal Attire Donald Trump's second term hits the 100-day mark with historically low approval ratings (39%). The economic impact of his tariffs is starting to bite (LA port imports down one-third, US economy shrinking). Adding to the unusual, Trump has been pictured in papal robes on the White House website, even expressing a desire to be Pope.(01:05:49) UK Political Fragmentation: Reform's Rise, Tories' Fall The UK's political landscape remains volatile. Recent local and by-election results project a national vote share that would see the Reform party at 30% and the Conservatives decimated to around 15% and potentially only five seats.(01:08:44) Germany Considers Banning Far-Right AFD Germany is contemplating a ban on the far-right AFD party, the largest single party in the Bundestag. The hosts discuss the problematic nature of banning popular political movements, arguing it often backfires.(01:11:21) Jay Rayner on Media: Mainstream vs. Social Food critic Jay Rayner's comments on the state of media are discussed, questioning the perceived universal informedness of mainstream journalists and acknowledging that both traditional and social media produce "rubbish."(01:15:29) AFL Round-Up: Carlton's Collapse, Collingwood-Geelong ClassicCarlton suffers a 10-goal drubbing by Adelaide, with Jack Silvani's absence keenly felt.Collingwood vs. Geelong is hailed as a "cracker" game, showcasing great skill and sportsmanship.Concerns are raised about key AFL games not being available on free-to-air television, potentially alienating younger fans.(01:22:18) Cricket News: Indian Prodigy & Vale "The Buzz" A 17-year-old Indian cricketer makes waves in the IPL with a century. The hosts pay tribute to Carlton AFL legend Peter Bosustow ("The Buzz"), who passed away after a battle with cancer, remembering his electrifying impact on the game.(01:27:27) NRL Update & Women's State of Origin Shines The Bulldogs continue their strong NRL run, while the Panthers finally notch a win. The NRL is praised for its successful promotion of the women's game, with the Women's State of Origin proving highly watchable.(01:29:51) An Ode to Whale Waste: Ecological Importance Hong Kong Jack shares a fascinating environmental tidbit on the crucial role of whale excrement and urine in ocean ecosystems, highlighting a baleen whale's impressive daily urine output of 950 litres.(01:32:10) Wrapping Up: A Transformative Election & How to Connect Jack the Insider concludes that Australia has witnessed a significant political transformation, with Anthony Albanese poised to be a long-term, impactful leader.Connect with the hosts:Jack the Insider: On X (formerly Twitter) @JackTheInsider (DMs open)Hong Kong Jack: On Twitter and his Substack.
