I met Maria Leonard Olsen in New York City when we both were filming our TEDx Talk. Immediately I was drawn to her intellect and communication style. Relaxed, mindful, yet disarmingly intense and so very powerful! She shared her story with me on that day, and now with the world through various platforms. She overcame a tumultuous childhood to live in a place of content. Through her writings, she has enabled others to embrace their uniqueness and accept their imperfect lives. She remains non-judgmental of how others behave toward her realizing that everyone has difficulty. She is a biracial woman whose parents were forbidden by law to marry in their home state of Maryland in the early 1960s. Victor Davis Hanson, senior fellow at Hoover Institution, Stanford University and New York Times bestselling author joins America's Roundtable co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy in a timely conversation on one of the greatest challenges impacting America. Professor Hanson explains the decline and fall of the once cherished idea of American citizenship. Human history is full of the stories of peasants, subjects, and tribes. Yet the concept of the “citizen” is historically rare—and was among America's most valued ideals for over two centuries. But without shock treatment, warns historian Victor Davis Hanson, American citizenship as we have known it may soon vanish. In The Dying Citizen — How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization Are Destroying the Idea of America, Hanson outlines the historical forces that led to this crisis. The evisceration of the middle class over the last fifty years has made many Americans dependent on the federal government. Open borders have undermined the idea of allegiance to a particular place. Identity politics have eradicated our collective civic sense of self. And a top-heavy administrative state has endangered personal liberty, along with formal efforts to weaken the Constitution. As in the revolutionary years of 1848, 1917, and 1968, 2020 ripped away our complacency about the future. But in the aftermath, we as Americans can rebuild and recover what we have lost. The choice is ours. Bio: Victor Davis Hanson, PhD | https://victorhanson.com/ Hanson, who was the fifth successive generation to live in the same house on his family's farm, was a full-time orchard and vineyard grower from 1980-1984, before joining the nearby CSU Fresno campus in 1984 to initiate a classical languages program. In 1991, he was awarded an American Philological Association Excellence in Teaching Award, which is given yearly to the country's top undergraduate teachers of Greek and Latin. Hanson has written for the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune, New York Post, National Review, The Washington Times, Commentary, The Washington Post, Claremont Review of Books, American Heritage, New Criterion, Policy Review, Wilson Quarterly, Weekly Standard, Daily Telegraph, and has been interviewed on National Public Radio, PBS Newshour, Fox News, CNN, and C-Span's Book TV and In-Depth. Hanson is the author of hundreds of articles, book reviews, scholarly papers, and newspaper editorials on matters ranging from ancient Greek, agrarian and military history to foreign affairs, domestic politics, and contemporary culture. He has written or edited 24 books. His latest books, The Case for Trump (released on March 5, 2019) and The Second World Wars (October 2017), a history of World War II, were both published by Basic Books. Hanson was educated at the University of California, Santa Cruz (BA, Classics, 1975, ‘highest honors' Classics, ‘college honors', Cowell College), the College Year in Athens (Athens, Raphael Demos Fellow, 1973-4), the American School of Classical Studies, Athens (regular member, 1978-79) and received his Ph.D. in Classics from Stanford University in 1980, with special emphases in the classical authors Thucydides and Aristophanes. https://ileaderssummit.org/services/americas-roundtable-radio/ https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @VDHanson @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Andy Slavitt is uniquely qualified to tell this story.  As the former head of Medicare and Medicaid and one of our nation's most recognizable and influential voices in healthcare, Andy was working with key players inside and outside of the government throughout the pandemic.  Most recently, he served in the Biden Administration as the lead White House advisor on the country's Covid-19 response. You'll want to hear his incredible insights, the stories he has from the frontlines of the response, and what we need to do to prevent unnecessary loss of life in future health crises. Optimize Yourself

The quality of your life often comes down to the quality of your relationships. Whether it's at work or at home, how you interact with those around you plays a huge role in how you rate your well being. Are you running around putting out fires, reacting to whatever pops up in the moment, while never finding time for the important things? Or are you calmly observing the situation and circumstances around you and responding in a thoughtful, constructive way and prioritizing your top values? If you find yourself in the former camp - reacting rather than responding - then today's guest is going to help you flip that script and improve the way you work and live. Jason Barger is a globally celebrated Author/Speaker/Consultant and thought leader. He was a tremendous asset to me while I was directing and producing my documentary GO FAR: The Christopher Rush Story, and he is committed to strengthening leadership, culture, vision, and values using his 6 step framework he calls “The 6 A's.” In our conversation we talk all about how to develop collaborative teams and positive work cultures, as well as fostering deeper professional and personal relationships using his “Thermostat Culture” approach. If you’re tired of working for a company or a team that values “busy work” above being productive and actually getting things done, this episode is a must-listen. If you’re exhausted by constant disagreements either with your co-workers (or your spouse or partner) and you want a simple framework to find common ground and move forwards with purpose, this episode is a must-listen. Though this conversation is taken from the Fitness in Post archives, the information is still valuable and relevant to the challenges we face today in our post-pandemic working reality. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: How airports are a metaphor for how we move in the world and respond to adversity. The difference between thermometers and thermostats and how it applies to our lives. Whether we react or respond often has to do with the clarity (or lack of) around what we are trying to achieve. KEY TAKEAWAY: "Busy-ness" does not equal effectiveness. BETTER QUESTION TO ASK YOURSELF: Am I doing the right things? (instead of: Am I doing enough?) Teams that take the time to clarify and align their goals are more effective at accomplishing their highest priorities. COMMON MISTAKE: Not getting a baseline assessment of where you or your team is starting from. How to set expectations by debriefing the schedule at the start of projects. KEY TAKEAWAY: Knowing the mission and understanding the deeper whys are the most important questions to answer. This applies to work and life. My personal story of how my family had to create our deeper whys. How the word attention can change the quality of your work, your relationships and your life. The difference between rules and standards and why standards are more important. The importance of finding language around your aspirations. What the checklist manifesto is and how it can automate your to do list to free up your mind for creative thinking. Independent publishing is not for the faint of heart - although access to technology has demolished the stranglehold of the traditional publishing "gatekeepers," you will have to acquire the skills, invest the time, or hire the talent (or all three) required to professionally publish and effectively distribute your book. In this re-launch of our Face The Book TV show, we continue to focus on the how-to of publishing, rather than the writing process (we'll leave that up to you!). In each episode, experts will lay out in detail the individual elements crucial to producing a book indistinguishable from a front-list title by a major publisher.  You can do it! So, where to start? I had a great time talking to my friend Laurie Jacobson about her new book TV Dinners..40 Classic TV Kid Stars Dish Up Favorite Recipes And Memories. We had so much fun catching up and talking about her book. She knows all the folks in the book because she became a member of the kid stars family after she married Jon Provost, who was Timmy in The Lassie Show. There are so many of our faves. Veronica and Angela Cartwright. They were from England and both so talented. You remember Veronica for her amazing performances in The Birds and The Children's Hour. Veronica continued acting as an adult. I've just recently been watching The X Files..I know 20 years later. Veronica had a major recurring part. Angela was known for Make Room For Daddy, Lost In Space and The Sound Of Music. She is now a wonderful artist. Lots of scoops.  We talk the Leave It To Beaver Crew..Larry Mondello was missing, now he's found. The Walton's The Brady Bunch, The Dick Van Dyke show, My Three Sons and so many more. They all give fave food as kids, then give yummy recipes as adults. It will make you long for wonder bread, peanut butter and Marshmallow fluff.  This is a fun podcast for these crazy days. I read the book curled up and just enjoyed seeing what happened to all these wonderful kid stars that have brightened many a generations day. I thank Laurie so much for coming on. We did a few scoops ourselves. She is so much fun and I love her.  Mostly thanks to my listeners. Dubbed “the leading national watchdog of state and local economic development subsidies” and “God's witness to corporate welfare,” Greg founded Good Jobs First in 1998 upon winning the Public Interest Pioneer Award. He has been training and consulting for state and local governments, associations of public officials, labor-management committees, unions, community groups, tax and budget watchdogs, environmentalists, and smart growth advocates more than 30 years.Greg backed into subsidy reform accidentally, while creating a national consulting practice against plant closings from Chicago from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s. He is associate producer of the 1984 PBS documentary The Last Pullman Car and consulted for state agencies in Illinois, New York, and Washington State. His 1986 Early Warning Manual Against Plant Closings (upon which he trained all 50 states' Dislocated Worker Units under contract to the U.S. Department of Labor) and his 1989 study “Intervening With Aging Owners to Save Industrial Jobs” (the first study to quantify the risk of job loss due to a lack of succession planning) set precedents that guided many public agencies and non-profits.Numerous plant closings he worked on involved abuse of economic development subsidies; factories that had received past incentives were now being shuttered. Usually, the fine print revealed that such abuses were technically legal; those revelations lead to public outrage and the enactment of clawbacks and other safeguards to prevent future waste. Sometimes there was a basis for legal challenge: in 1987, Greg wrote a study that triggered the City of Duluth's successful lawsuit against Triangle Corporation; the nationally-reported verdict arrested the closure of that city's largest factory, Diamond Tool, based on an Industrial Revenue Bond contract. Between 1990 and 1992, he assisted the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers in Elkhart, Indiana in their multiple-abuse lawsuit against American Home Products that settled for $24 million on the eve of trial.Collecting the reforms prompted by these revelations (clawbacks, disclosure, job quality standards, etc.), Greg wrote No More Candy Store: States and Cities Making Job Subsidies Accountable in 1994. It was lauded by the International Economic Development Council as “very impressive research” and reviewed by the National Conference of State Legislatures a “famous polemic that contends that subsidies for economic development are mere corporate giveaways, and that calls for greater accountability and public restraint.”Founding Good Jobs First in Washington, DC in 1998, partnering with the Fiscal Policy Institute to launch Good Jobs New York in 2000, and welcoming the Corporate Research Project in 2001, Greg has built a full-service resource center for constituency-based organizations and public officials seeking to reform economic development. Since its first report in 1999, Good Jobs First has issued more than 100 studies, setting a long string of influential research precedents about economic development subsidies.Good Jobs First's 50-states-plus-DC “report card” studies, such as “Show Us the Subsidized Jobs,” have made it de facto the arbiter of best state and local practice in transparency (disclosing deal-specific costs and benefits online). It is also the go-to source on best practices for job creation and job quality standards, and for enforcement including “clawbacks,” or recapture safeguards. Led by research director Phil Mattera, Good Jobs First research analysts Leigh McIlvaine, Tommy Cafcas and Kasia Tarczynska monitor subsidy news in all 50 states and provide front-line technical assistance. In response to GJF's 2003 study, A Better Deal for Illinois, that state enacted the nation's best subsidy disclosure system. In 2005, New York City enacted the best local disclosure ordinance in the nation (enhanced in 2010) after repeated agitations by Good Jobs New York's Bettina Damiani with the NYC Industrial Development Agency.Greg's 2005 book The Great American Jobs Scam: Corporate Tax Dodging and the Myth of Job Creation (Berrett-Koehler Publishers) was widely reviewed by daily newspapers, specialty tax and development publications, C-Span's Book TV, The New York Review of Books, Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. Business Week called it a “powerful compendium of corporate tax dodging in the U.S.” and State Tax Notes wrote: “meticulously documented …scrupulously accurate …evocative storytelling…”He has book chapters in Building Health Communities: A Guide to Community Economic Development for Advocates, Lawyers, and Policymakers (American Bar Association, 2009) and Breakthrough Communities: Sustainability and Justice in the Next American Metropolis (MIT Press, 2009).Greg summarizes the job-creation benefits of smart growth for working families in this article in Urban Habitat's Race, Poverty and the Environment entitled “Public Transit and Urban Density Create More Good Jobs.”

TV (The Book) Two Experts Pick The Greatest American Shows of All Time (Grand Central Publishing) Is The Wire better than Breaking Bad? Is Cheers better than Seinfeld? What's the best high school show ever made? Why did Moonlighting really fall apart? Was the Arrested Development Netflix season brilliant or terrible?  For twenty years-since they shared a TV column at Tony Soprano's hometown newspaper-critics Alan Sepinwall and Matt Zoller Seitz have been debating these questions and many more, but it all ultimately boils down to this:  What's the greatest TV show ever?  That debate reaches an epic conclusion in TV (THE BOOK). Sepinwall and Seitz have identified and ranked the 100 greatest scripted shows in American TV history. Using a complex, obsessively all- encompassing scoring system, they've created a Pantheon of top TV shows, each accompanied by essays delving into what made these shows great. From vintage classics like The Twilight Zone and I Love Lucy to modern masterpieces like Mad Men and Friday Night Lights, from huge hits like All in the Family and ER to short-lived favorites like Firefly and Freaks and Geeks, TV (THE BOOK) will bring the triumphs of the small screen together in one amazing compendium.  Praise for TV (The Book) “TV (The Book) is going to start fights and I mean that as the highest compliment. In fact, the book is more fun if you disagree with its authors, informed and thoughtful as they are. But bring your best game because they sure did."—Laura Lippman, New York Times bestselling novelist "What fun to dive into a book that not only inspires but invites debate over your favorite TV shows.  Which ones truly deserve to be in the Pantheon? Which ones did or didn’t make the cut? Any book that celebrates everything from The Sopranos to Rocky and Bullwinkle gets my attention…and deserves yours."—Leonard Maltin, film critic/historian/lifelong TV junkie “I hate Top Ten lists and am existentially opposed to numerically rating television shows, so this book is my worst nightmare! You should buy it anyway, because Alan and Matt are shrewd, witty and insightful critics, even if they are wrong about Cheers being better than 30 Rock.”—Emily Nussbaum, The New Yorker “It’s the Golden Age of TV,  yes, but  TV: The Book shows we are also in the Golden Age of  TV criticism. In the same way so many of us made Leonard  Maltin’s Movie Guide or Pauline Kael’s or David Thomson’s  review collections our film bibles, readers will be poring over this magnificent volume for years to come. An essential, provocative and irresistible tome from two of our greatest critics.”—Megan Abbott, best-selling author of The Fever and You Will Know Me Alan Sepinwall has been writing about television for close to twenty years. Formerly a TV critic for Newark’s Star-Ledger (Tony Soprano’s hometown paper), he currently writes the popular blog What's Alan Watching? on HitFix.com. he is the author of The Revolution was Televised: The Cops, Crooks, Slingers and Slayers Who Changed TV Drama Forever (Touchstones, 2012) which the New York Times’ Michiko Kakutani named one of her 10 Favorite Books of 2012.  Jon Hamm is an American actor, director, and television producer best known for his nuanced portrayal of the high-powered, philandering advertising executive Don Draper on the AMC's dramatic series Mad Men. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, Television Critics Association Award and a Critics’ Choice Television Award, as well as multiple Emmy and Screen Actors Guild nominations.

In our audience feedback segment, the Crime Writers respond to a heartwarming email from a cancer survivor who's ready to take on the challenge of punching one of their least-favorite attorneys. Then, when it's time for business, the panel digs into the final episode of APM Reports' "In the Dark." Madeleine Baran didn't pull punches when it came to the police narrative that Danny Heinrich was just too good at covering his tracks for 25+ years. But is her conclusion too broad? Unfair? (Sometimes investigators know who did it, but can't get enough to make the arrest - as officials have told Rebecca & Kevin about the Stacey Burns "Mothers Day Murder" case.) Finally, Rebecca, Kevin, Lara, and Toby offer up their recommendations about what you should be listening to, reading, and watching right now. The invalid legal fictions of statism: counties, states, nations, etc. Report #TL07A: THE ANATOMY OF SLAVESPEAK by Frederick Mann http://www.buildfreedom.com/tl/tl07a.shtml "It is hard to fight an enemy who has outposts in your head." Sally Kempton It's the nature of slavespeak to keep you in your place, i.e., oppressed Terrocrat--coercive political agent "...it's absolutely vital that you understand that the primary means terrocrats use to subjugate, control, and dominate their victims is words." F.M. Beware the cattle guards for your mind, which are typically devised for you at an early age The fundamentally irrational nature of spanking, or "tough love," rests on rationalizations for evil actions Authoritarian sociopaths demand "respect" (in the form of fear and obedience), but turn-about is not fair play Rationalizations support pseudo self-esteem and vice versa; if you don't honor yourself, you won't honor others People in government commit crimes (such as extortion and kidnapping) with impunity, crimes which are forbidden to individuals "[The State] will give you everything if you worship it, this new idol: thus it buys for itself the luster of your virtues and the glance of your proud eyes." Nietzsche People have to maintain the language of seeming truth in order to maintain their power People falsely believe that they would suffer if the State fell The language of liberty (and euphemisms) are used to cover up the tyranny of statism In general, slave-mentality can consist of many elements... Each of us is responsible for our own happiness Life is neither fair nor unfair; fairness is a concept that concerns human relationships "It's the law" is slavespeak that denies taking personal responsibility for injustice and immorality There are psychological payoffs for feeling down and out "A belief that you have to sacrifice part of your earnings, property, etc. 'for the good of society'" spells complete enslavement Absolute truth is absolutely true :) http://www.ozarkia.net/bill/anarchism/Fallacies.html#Self%20Exclusion Thanks for all the letters! by Sam Dodson (aka SamIAm) http://freekeene.com/2009/04/23/thanks-for-all-the-letters/#more-1887 http://www.youtube.com/ObscuredTruth How many civil disobedients and libertarian voices will it take to instill freedom memes in the general populace? In a free market you get what you pay for, and you only get what you want--unlike imposed governmental "services" Book TV on C-SPAN2 - Top Nonfiction Authors Every Weekend - Robert Higgs http://www.booktv.org/watch.aspx?ProgramId=ID-10300 who's your nanny? by Trevor Bothwell http://bothwell.typepad.com/whos_your_nanny/2009/04/american-the-idol.html Conflation of State and society disarms the masses and perpetuates the Stockholm syndrome Mass cognitive dissonance circulating in the culture on account of the State Orthodox Objectivist claptrap: http://capitalism.org/faq/anarchism.htm "Legitimacy" of government is fostered by virtue of being a coercive "legalized" monopoly Individual rights exist prior to any government; you are free to make choices by virtue of being a rational animal The magnitude of the problem of government is reflected in slavespeak and failure to reason from first principles (and defining terms) as well as rewards for obedience The choice for budding Objectivists: become a Randroid, or become an independent thinker (and thus anarcho-capitalist) Once you abandon your search for truth, you succumb to your fears Government equals completely communized justice; a monopoly of "justice" will always provide the worst quality at the highest price Galt's Gulch was anarchy! Fear of "competing gangs" stems from fear of others, not trusting them to be responsible individuals "I swear--by my life and my love of it--that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine." John Galt bumper music "drum-1a" by friend and Free Stater Roger Grant (better song title might be "Black Robe Incantation...") http://www.politicalgraffiti.com; couldn't find exact link to comment, please go to http://completeliberty.com/magazine/category/91697
