Mastering Big Goals: Preparation, Strategy, and Having Fun

Shark Theory

In this episode of "Shark Theory," host Baylor Barbee dives into the lessons learned from completing a grueling 50-mile trail race, drawing parallels between the challenges of ultra-running and the pursuit of personal goals. On a frigid morning that eerily mirrored the conditions of his race four years prior, Baylor reflects on his journey, emphasizing the power of strategic planning, preparation, and adaptability. Goal Attainment and Strategic Planning: Baylor shares the importance of having a well-thought-out plan when tackling big goals, akin to running a 50-mile race. With guidance from legendary coach Chris Hoff, he highlights the value of executing a solid game plan to ensure success. A key insight Baylor shares is that one doesn't have to be perfect but must commit fully to at least 80% of the plan. His experience demonstrates that careful planning, including designated times for rest and nutrition, is crucial in achieving long-term goals. Preparation and Adaptability: Baylor underscores the significance of preparation, revealing that he and his brother logged 892 training miles to prepare for their 50-mile race. He emphasizes that true preparation is vital for success, as it exposes one's readiness when challenges arise. Moreover, the need to adapt to uncontrollable elements, such as the weather during their race, is a critical lesson. Baylor encourages listeners to conserve their mental energy for areas within their control, fostering resilience and focus amidst adversity. Key Takeaways: Proper planning and execution are crucial in achieving large goals; achieving 80% of the plan can suffice for success. Preparation is key, with extensive groundwork often required for significant undertakings. Learn to adapt to uncontrollable circumstances to conserve energy and maintain focus. Building positive interactions and enjoying the journey make challenging goals more memorable and rewarding. Be ready to invest significantly more effort than initially expected to reach desired milestones. Notable Quotes: "People ask me all the time, how do you run 50 miles? I can't fathom running 50 miles. And 50 miles is a long way." "Your preparation or lack thereof will always expose itself. Quit thinking that you're going to rise to the occasion, it's simply not true." "You're always going to have to put in that work that people don't see in order to see the finish lines that people do see." "There's always going to be aspects of life that you simply can't control." "We're not going to be the fastest... But one thing we're going to do is we are going to have the most fun."

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” ~Bruce LeeNapoleon Dynamite got it right!Between you and your big, shiny goal is a gatekeeper.Any clue? It's the difference between doing and dreaming. It's skills.Do you possess, at a high level, the skills your goal requires?Identify 3-5 of the key SKILLS that your goal demands, and list them. Here's the kicker: skills and habits arrive together, like Batman and Robin—like salt and pepper—one invariably brings the other.Picture this: you want to write a book, run a marathon, or play the piano like a pro. Big dreams, to be sure. However, without the requisite skills/habits, these dreams will remain dreams. Is playing the piano a skill or a habit? I talk about how personal values, clear visions, and a solid execution strategy are the perfect combo to make your goals a reality. Drawing from personal stories and backed by science, we explore how to up our goal-setting game. So, let's get into the details:The Vital Few (TVF) Timestamps: [00:02:38] Why Putting Your Goals Into Words MattersFirst, let's talk about the importance of giving voice to your dreams. You'd be amazed at how essential it is to articulate those goals out loud. It's all about getting clear and specific....[00:05:20] Filling in The Values GapNext, I venture into what I call the 'values gap'—the discrepancy between what we want and what truly matters to our core. Here's a hint: when your goals align with your personal values, you're setting yourself up for real success....[00:08:14] Picture This: Your Vision MattersDiving deeper, I chat about how translating your values into a tangible vision of the future can be a powerful motivator. It's all about bridging the gap between our aspirations and reality, making us feel more connected to what we want to achieve....[00:10:50] Let's Get Practical: Planning and Pencil It inNow, let's put that motivation into action with a bit of solid planning. You'll see how crucial it is to turn your process to achieve your goals into tangible tasks and then make space for them on your calendar. Because trust me, a goal without a plan is just a wish....[00:14:31] Ignorance Isn't Bliss: The Knowledge GapLastly, I touch on the knowledge gap. Maurice delves into the discovery phase, highlighting the intricacies of identifying glitches in one's personal development journey. He emphasizes the health sector's wealth of research and resources, aiding in uncovering obstacles hindering progress. Exploring the psychological realm, Maurice challenges the notion of effortless transformation, advocating for a deeper dive into satanic attacks obstructing personal growth. He underscores the significance of personal revelation, steering away from self-critique and Freudian analyses. Instead, he advocates for a proactive approach to identifying and conquering intrusive thoughts and weaknesses. Addressing the importance of recognizing oneself in a spiritual war, Maurice encourages participants to acknowledge shared struggles, enabling them to combat feelings of isolation. Collaboratively, Maurice engages attendees in a team-based discovery session, encouraging them to pinpoint reasons for follow-through challenges, often stemming from hidden satanic attacks. He navigates through setting tangible goals, emphasizing the necessity of defining precise destinations in the health journey. Maurice introduces layered success criteria for short-term and long-term goals, aiming to counteract vague aspirations. Highlighting the need for specificity, he discusses the importance of setting measurable benchmarks, akin to teaching concepts to children. Maurice then leads attendees through the circular elements of the battle plan, emphasizing the cyclical nature of self-improvement. He rejects the notion of rigid timelines, advocating for reflective adjustments and flexibility in the pursuit of personal development goals. This insightful workshop illuminates the intricate psychology behind self-improvement, guiding participants towards a more holistic and adaptable approach to personal growth within the Eternal Warriors framework. In this episode of The Habit Coach, Asdin Doctor explain how in our own lives, we sometimes amass a multitude of goals, leading to a loss of focus and the manifestation of a personal confusion effect. This hinders our ability to succeed. What happens when we get off track? And how can we get back on track when we've fallen off the wagon? We set goals because we want to change, grow, or experience something new. Whether it's weight loss, financial gain, learning something new, or spiritual growth, we know it feels good to achieve these goals. But what happens when we're not on track? We can get overwhelmed with our goals and the commitment they require. Things come up that distract us or stop us. And then it feels like we've failed, so we stop altogether. The key is to remember that the change itself is what we're really pursuing. The goal is simply the means by which we change. So even if we feel like we've failed to attain the goal, we shouldn't quit. We should recognize the actual change that has been happening all along. Getting Back on TrackWhen you've fallen off the wagon, it's important to encourage each other to keep going. Change your mindset to focus on the transformation that's happening in your life. Remember, you're better today than you were yesterday. If you look back, you can clearly see that you've made forward movement. Supporting Each OtherAs a couple, it's crucial to support each other in our personal pursuits. Acknowledge each other's efforts, be patient, and celebrate the fact that you're trying something new and trying to change for the better. Growth SpurtThis month, we're focusing on growing by letting freedom ring. We're celebrating the freedom to learn something new, the freedom to pray, and the freedom to pursue happiness. PrayerDear Lord, thank you for giving us the capacity to set new goals, to experience transformation, to do something new, to learn and to grow. We pray we would take advantage of all that we have been given to do the hard thing and see progress. Regardless of how much time we have left in this year, will you motivate our hearts and minds to follow through with the goals we hope to achieve? Will you keep insecurity far from us? We pray we would be supportive in marriage and work together as a team to carry out your will. In Jesus' name, AMEN!

The Wednesday Call with Andy Albright

On this episode of The Wednesday Call podcast, Andy Albright and his special guest Jeff Bright explain how you can effectively measure your goals.  Here is a recipe for reaching a goal: Firm Deadlines (in order to set expectations) plus Specific Tasks (in order to assign accountability) plus Measurable Outcomes (in order to justify consequences) equals Goal Attainment. The best way to measure your goals is to measure your progress with three measurable outcomes: Commitment (when dedication kills excuses) Completion (when winning kills stress) Consistency (when accuracy kills vagueness) Commitment as a measurable outcome: Commitment is not measured by how strongly you feel about something, but by what you are willing to give up. And what you give up may not be as important as how long you are asked to give it up. In that case, you have to only measure the level of commitment to what's required by the situation at that moment.  EXAMPLE: Adherence to containment measures due to the Coronavirus. In this example, tolerance is the true measurable outcome.  Completion as a measurable outcome: Task completion is one of the fundamental usability metrics to measure success. It's the most common way to quantify the effectiveness of effort. If agents can't do what they intend to accomplish, not much else matters. While that may seem like a straightforward concept, actually determining whether agents are completing tasks often isn't that easy even with a mode of evaluation such as a leaderboard. Doing a deep dive (measuring) into the actions that it takes to appear on the leaderboard is much more important than the results themselves.  Consistency as a measurable outcome: While commitment is about intention to accomplish; and completion is about quantity within the accomplishment; consistency is then the quality within the results.  Consistency or sustainability is measured by assessing performance over the long run. In life, you can either fail, survive or succeed. For most people, success is fleeting -- they will spend the majority of their life fluctuating between failure and survival.  If you are failing, it means you're not living the life you want, you are not accomplishing your most important goals. Finding yourself in this state or near it will prompt you to spring into action. This is how you get back to surviving. This is the pivotal moment in your life.  If you are surviving, you are already on your way to success. In fact, you may have accomplished one or more of your most important goals. The reason that pure, raw success is so rare is because when you find yourself on the upward trend, something triggers you to stop -- whether you are aware of it or not. Think of it as going on autopilot or becoming comfortable with your success.  Surviving means doing just enough to get by -- just enough to reach a milestone or to win a trip or contest. Maintaining success, however, means always pushing yourself to break through the glass ceiling above and trying to reach a higher level of consistency. This is done by implementing the following four steps: 1. Auditing your philosophy: find your "why" in order to understand what you want.  2. Focusing on what seems insignificant: do the little things to cultivate good habits.  3. Stop searching for the instant button: don't expect quick results but rather lasting results.  4. Keep doing what you're doing: recognize the actions that gain you success. "Success is fine, but success is fleeting. Significance is lasting." -- author unknown MORAL: Success is merely rented and it is due daily through your sweat. It affords you more than money by giving you the opportunity to make a difference. www.AndyAlbright.com @AndySAlbright www.NAALeads.com @NationalAgentsAlliance @NAALeadsTheWay #TheAlliance #DoTheDo #N247RU

This teaching has you covered! __________________________________________________ SECRETS TO GOAL ATTAINMENT ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN GOALS ~ A MIRACLE PODCAST PRODUCTION ~ Action is the process of doing something to achieve an aim. Actions speak louder than goals because what one does means more than what one plans. Goals are good, but without action they are infertile and sterile . . . they are uninspired and uninventive. I believe in setting goals, and I have taught the importance of goal setting for 50 years. However, there are times in your life and ministry where you will have to FORCE YOUR SELF to take . . . or possibly, maintain . . . action. That is what this podcast teaching is about! I want you to burn the following scriptures into your mind: "Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded." [2 Chronicles 15:7] "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord." [1 Corinthians 15:58] "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." [Galatians 6:9] There is a time to rest, there is a time to heal, there is a time to reflect, there is a time to regroup . . . however, let God lead you in these times. Be led of the Spirit in these times just as you are in the days of battle. Never quit! As we discuss in the book The Art and Principles of Christian Warfare, we only regroup so that we may advance in battle more powerfully and effectively. Recently I have been studying the life of King David again. I felt as though I were with him. I almost cried when reading and reflecting upon the consequences of his sin. It is plain to see where David's problem started: "And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem." [2 Samuel 11:1] Lust, adultery, murder, fourfold judgment on his family: these were the results of NOT going to war at the time of year when the other kings went to battle. In this teaching, "Goal Attainment: Actions Speak Louder than Goals," I am going to help you make sure that NEVER happens in your life. It is interesting to notice that things turned around for King David after HE turned around. In 2 Samuel 18:1-4 we read that, "David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them." David then split the warriors up into three parts under the leadership of his top three generals, and said to the people, "I will surely go forth with you myself also." But the people said to him, "You shall not go forth (with us) . . . for you are worth ten thousand of us . . . it is better that you aid us from the city." And David answered, "What seems best to you I will do." Notice that David's intent was to go to battle with his army; this is what is important: the intent of the heart. He had learned his lesson the hard way. Never stop fighting, at least in the intent of your heart. You must MAINTAIN a "warrior" mentality. You must have spiritual and mental control of the situation at all times. Even in times of "R and R" (rest and recreation) you must maintain a warrior attitude and be listening to God for instructions about the future battle(s). Your job is to constantly appropriate victory through faith as you listen to and obey the voice of the Spirit for the glory of God. YOU CAN NOT STOP FIGHTING . . . EVER! IF YOU DON'T QUIT . . . YOU WILL WIN, BUT IF YOU QUIT, YOU CAN'T WIN! This is a message for many of God's People. Is this YOUR experience? You ... Have not fulfilled your heart's desires in your life's calling (including ministry desires); Are not enjoying your work (including ministry); or, Have been (or are being) beaten up by the enemy (and, sometimes by God's children). Whenever asked about the secret of his success, real estate developer and billionaire, Donald Trump, always answers, "Do what you enjoy!" It's true. We must be excited about our work . . . especially Christians and those in God's work. The purpose of this teaching is to both CHALLENGE you and HELP you: Enjoy your work; Do what you want; and, Maintain victory so that you can always take action. Be the person you always wanted to be . . . make it happen! King Solomon said, "There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul [enjoy] good in his labor. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God." [Ecclesiastes 2:24] Many people are "stale" and not on the cutting edge because they do NOT enjoy their work. They love God but are lacking the anointing to be a "new sharp threshing instrument." [Isaiah 41:15] The enemy's job is to get you discouraged . . . and then to lose your vision. If this describes you, I have some good news for you. If you will do what I teach you in this message, things will begin to change. Do some fasting, get alone and seek God. Then, in the Spirit, tear down the walls that are limiting you. Take your authority and BELIEVE GOD for the things you once desired! Get back on track. Don't give up and don't take LESS than the best! Let me repeat that: Fast, get alone, seek God;Tear down the walls that are limiting you;Take your authority;Believe God for the things you once desired;Get back on track;Don't give up; and,Don't take less than the best! Remember, if you don't quit, you'll win ... but if you quit, you can't win! There was a movie several years ago titled "Stuck On You" which starred Matt Damon and Cher. It was about two brothers who were Siamese twins. Finally, the brothers realized they needed to be separated (physically) in order to do what each brother wanted to fulfill in his lifetime. They reached this decision when one brother asked the other, "What is that thing you want to do MOST in the world?" And then he challenged his brother with this admonition: "You have to do it!" Let me recommend eight (8) steps to take in order to help get you out of your "desensitized spirituality" and into the vortex of God's anointing: [1] As much as possible, stop all activity for a while, even ministry. [2] Get "loose," relax, and enjoy God. NOTE: Many times you will be tempted to start a new ministry or outreach right away (while relaxing in your time of rest). That would be like shooting yourself in the foot while you're walking to the hospital. If God has given you NEW ideas or directives, take skeletal notes (or even copious notes if you feel the necessity). Then store the notes for the future time of implementing the project(s). You will find that, as you're relaxing in the sunshine of God's love, an abundance of ideas will come to you. [3] Take time to dream. As we studied in the Introductory Module, Albert Einstein, perhaps the greatest mathematician and physicist of the last century, had two (2) major assets: A childlike questioning character (like a four or five-year-old); and, An intellectual capacity to think beyond. In the first part of the book, The Art and Principles of Christian Warfare, I ask the question, "How long has it been since you've asked your Heavenly Father some childlike questions?" Questions like: What can you do to reach every nation and tribe for Messiah Yeshua? What is the KEY thing you can do that will impact nations the most? What are new ways to market the Good News? What are some secrets of the universe that nobody knows? What do you [God] like about me [yourself] the most? How long has it been since you: Discarded all your ideas about how to minister? Researched new trends and cultural evolutionary movements? Asked a lost person how they would reach the world for Christ? Studied the ants? Studied seeds, climatology, and weather patterns? [4] Know who you are. Read through the epistles; learn once again WHO you are in Christ and WHAT you have in Christ. You have to come to the place, once again, where you KNOW the calling and destiny that has been designed for you before the foundation of the world. True holiness, and also true Biblical prosperity, is to KNOW that you're working "hand-in-hand" with God to shake nations for Christ. [5] Meditate. Find the scriptures (rhema) that speak to you concerning your calling and destiny and dwell on them. Speak them to yourself. See yourself doing the things involved with your calling and destiny. Image them upon the screen of your mind. See the places and the activities and then THANK God for their fulfillment. Receive them by faith. Speak, See, Thank God, Receive. [6] Change your environment (and maybe your friends). This is why God sent his servants into different areas, sometimes as a result of hard-times. It's a lot easier if you do it for yourself, with the leading of the Holy Spirit. Imitational faith, the copying of ministry styles used by others, results in not only lack of creativity, but also "inbreeding" in the Body of Christ. Study more here >>> about Imitational Faith. Be yourself . . . be original! Don't be afraid to be different. Study the lifestyles of God's servants through the centuries: in the Bible, and throughout Christian church history. [7] Re-evaluate your goals. Which ones have been accomplished? Are there any goals that you feel you should scrap for now, or permanently? Which ones are not accomplished yet? Ask yourself: Why are they not accomplished? Where are you in your time line, or schedule, for their fulfillment? What action will you take to implement them in a timely fashion? Are there any new goals or projects God wants you to undertake? If so, do they fit into the general scheme of your other goals? Are they completely separate from your other goals? [8] Make your plans fit into God's plans. The GREATEST ADVICE I can give you concerning your plans is as follows: IF YOUR PLANS FIT INTO GOD'S PLANS . . . YOU WILL HAVE GOD'S FAITH . . . AND GOD'S FAITH ALWAYS WORKS! Cry out to God and tell Him you want to be used greatly by Him ... that you don't want to come home to Heaven until you've fulfilled, with excellence, your calling and your destiny. And remember the words of King Solomon: "He that fears God will come forth of them all." We are to fear God . . . NOT men, demons, or anything else. The enemy knows that if he can get you to fear anyone or anything other than God, he can cancel your fear of God and thereby void the operation of wisdom in your life . . . at least temporarily until you become aware of what's happening. You have to "shut off" the ideas of fear and replace them with IDEAS OF FAITH. Use visual thoughts when you have thoughts of concern. You will eliminate most of Satan's attacks on your mind. You will also destroy Satanic activity in its tracks! When you have thoughts of fear, replace them with VISUAL THOUGHTS. So when you have thoughts of fear . . . about your family, your possessions, your health, your ministry . . . replace them with VISUAL THOUGHTS. See the Holy Angels ministering to, blessing and guarding your family, your possessions, your health, and your ministry. By visualizing your thoughts, you can even add emphasis (power and potency) to them by decreeing them. Use the Holy Angels in your thoughts . . . see them helping you. See the BLOOD of Christ over everything God has given you by birth, adoption, and assignment. To help you with strategies for success and goal attainment in the LORD's work (or any work whose goal is to help build God's Kingdom) I recommend the following book: The Art of Christian Warfare: Rules of Engagement. Ethics-Talk: The Greatest Good of Man is Daily to Converse About Virtue

In this show, we will be discussing the reasons why we do what we do when making educational, professional, and life decisions. What sort of motivation is behind our goals and ends, and how does higher education mold the content of our goals? We are concerned because much of the motivation and message behind modern university education is career oriented. This ultimately seems to be producing a generation of citizens focused on monetary or status-oriented ends. The message is that one ought to know what kind of “career” he/she wants rather than what it is that is driving them or what they are able to contribute. The question that ought to be asked is— how ought educated, enlightened beings define “success” and what kinds of ends are best for us as students to be most successful? We will be addressing these questions first in relation to education and secondly with longer-term goals and how one knows what her ends are and why.
