What do you get when you combine Nerf with the Garbage Pail Kids? You get Madballs, one of the most memorable toys of the 1980s. Madballs came out during a time when a big segment of the toy industry followed the motto, "If it's gross or smells, it sells." Madballs continued with that formula of gross-out humor and quickly made a dent in the toy market (and on heads...) Today we look back on the creation, launch, and remarkable success of Madballs, along with the controversy that resulted in them getting banned in some schools. ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. This episode includes Elvira's House of Mystery #6, Fantastic Four #293, G.I. Joe a Real American Hero #50, Marvel Age #41, Marvel Saga: the Official History of the Marvel Universe #9, Masters of the Universe #3, Son of Ambush Bug #2-3, Spectacular Spider-Man #117, The Mighty Thor #370, Uncanny X-Men #208, Web of Spider-Man #18, West Coast Avengers #12, X-Factor #7, and more!“Transcripts” Early May, 1986 Late April, 1986 Twitter #CRRésumé? rolledspinepodcasts@gmail.com Comment on Résumé page or Rolled Spine Podcasts. Von M.A.S.K. über Madballs bis zu den Ghostbusters gibt's wieder sehr viel Nostalgie in dieser Episode des Popkultur Beichtstuhls.
Today on the Toy Power Podcast, our good friend Scotty stops by to help us get through a few news items. We sift through the rubble of post-SDCC to assess the damage. Did NECA’s pre-order method work as we’d hoped? There’s some great news of a local Aussie talent getting time with the Predator while Super7 heads down the Disney path with some Ultimates figures that capture the magic. Just don’t ask about the name of the cloth goods…. There’s Madballs to be purchased and is Mulan set to break records or wallets in this brave new cinema delivery method? Then we head to Cybertron as we do some spoiler-free looks at the new Transformers show on Netflix. Who didn’t take a toilet break while watching it? Who is the first to make a Game of Thrones comparison? And the big one: are you buying any of the new toys? We end on a series of shoutouts including the Action Figure Adventure lads, our buddy Paul Klotz and a show first giveaway competition! How good are you at counting? The Madballs were a series of grotesque looking foam balls made up of different characters. They were a moderate hit in the 80s and would lead to comic books and cartoon spinoffs. They have a very interesting origin story that involves the game of "Hot Potato" and there may be a main reason behind their success. Show notes: Madballs
The year was 1985, and the balls had just gone mad! MADBALLS were a successful series of toys that gave gruesome faces to spherical objects, but although they practically flew of the shelves, they didn't have their own cartoon series. But it wasn't for lack of trying! MADBALLS had not one but TWO pilot episodes, as wildly different as they could possibly be while still starring gross anthropomorphic balls. Could they both have been... CANCELED TOO SOON? After a lovely break for the holidays, we are back for our first episode of 2019! This week, we have Adam Staffaroni, who actually went to school with me when I was growing up. Small world! Adam’s company, Einhorn’s Epic Productions, has launched a brand new scripted mystery podcast called Lethal Lit, which has been a smash hit and was recently featured in the New York Times. I was so impressed by Lethal Lit that I just had to get Adam on the show to find out his story. It turns out he had a very inspiring one! I hope you enjoy this episode, because it’s all about following your dreams. About Adam Staffaroni Adam is the co-founder & chief creative officer of Einhorn’s Epic Productions, leading new IP (intellectual property) development for the company. Previously, Adam was the senior editor in charge of the Roar imprint at Lion Forge Entertainment, where he developed new IP for the children's and teen markets while also managing notable titles including Saved by the Bell, Punky Brewster, Care Bears, and Madballs. Prior to Lion forge, Adam relocated to Los Angeles to launch the Kaboom! imprint at Boom! Studios, where he was responsible for the Adventure Time and Peanuts programs as well as projects with New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler and acclaimed musicians Coheed & Cambria and Daniel Johnston. Adam began his career in the licensing group at DC Entertainment after earning his AB from Dartmouth College and his MFA from the Center for Cartoon Studies. Connect with Adam @eintropolis on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook tigtorres.com Here’s to Getting Unstuck, Cynthia This week our show is sponsored by Wellstruck from Sarah Zero. Faster than shazbazzar driving through Atlanta. More powerful than JediShua’s art pen. Look! There, up in the sky, it’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…Superman! Standing for truth, justice, and the American Way, Superman continues to inspire the best in people — at least the 1978 version of Superman does. Feedback EarBuds both new and old (experienced?) send in their feedback to podcast@TechnoRetroDads.com with comments and questions about TRON, animated giant robots in Force Five, and a discovery about JediShua’s weekly introduction. EarBuds Toy Catalog: Action Figures The results of the second bracket of the EarBuds Toy Catalog are in as four sets of “action figures” of times past go head-to-head against each other (via EarBuds’ voting). Madballs, Micronauts, Mego Superheroes, and Mattel’s He-Man and She-Ra lines face off for the EarBuds’ favorite. With many more participants this week, the challenge was more intense. Find out if the ‘70s or ‘80s take the prize in this episode! Sadly, the Mego Superheroes (including Superman) didn’t make it very far in this round, but you can always be a part of the brackets as these rounds continue over the next two weeks. Keep checking various social media outlets for updates and ways you can vote for your favorite toys in the EarBuds Toy Catalog contest. Superman (the Movie) Christopher Reeve filled out the blue spandex (“That is one bad outfit!”) in 1978 as Superman is pitted against arch villain Lex Luthor in a real estate scuffle that brings out the best in Clark Kent. Standing for truth, justice, and the American Way, the orphan from Krypton becomes the altruistic hero we all love as he saves the day for Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, and everyone else in California when Otisville nearly becomes a reality. Vinyl Scratchback: Superman Soundtrack The score for Superman helped make this movie iconic, branding Superman with the John Williams theme that can be recognized almost anywhere — even when sung a bit off-key! In an era when disco was driving everyone wild, another orchestral score turned out to be a hit among movie goers. Thanks for tuning in to TechnoRetro Dads, EarBuds! While you’re watching Superman, be sure to subscribe on iTunes or Apple Podcasts. Don’t forget to rate and review TechnoRetro Dads on iTunes, share us and with us on social media, vote in the EarBuds Christmas bracket, get TechnoRetro merch at TeePublic, and join discussions on Discord about toys, cereal, games, movies and/or shows from the ‘70s and ‘80s by giving the ‘Dads your feedback via voice mail at (209) 878-7323 or sending us your mp3dback via electronic-M to podcast@TechnoRetroDads.com. Share and enjoy.

A pitch for a movie about the 1980's toy, the MADBALLS, intended for adult audiences! Can you imagine a big-budget MADBALLS movie? Full of cursing and crazy violence? Well now you don't have to, because we've gone and dreamed one up for you! Is it serious? Is it satire? We may never really know, but one thing's for sure about this modern update on the classic toys: These ain't your daddy's balls. So come along and enjoy this strange and silly story.
