Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about the movie star. The person who if you looked up “movie star” in the dictionary there would be a picture of him. Robert Redford!  Today we talk the esteemed career of the quintessential movie star. Our B-Sides include: The Hot Rock, The Great Waldo Pepper, Havana, and The Last Castle. Our guest today is Blake Howard, podcast producer, host, and really good guy. Check out One Heat Minute Productions for everything new and relevant in Blake's world.  We discuss a million things, from why The Hot Rock is so hard to find, to the airplane stunts in The Great Waldo Pepper, to why Havana doesn't work. There's an investigation into the politics of The Last Castle, a brief celebration of Lena Olin, and a quick rave for Jordan Harper's searing short story “My Savage Year.” Additional topics include that upcoming City of Hope release, why Peter Yates is “slow vibes central,” why great screenwriter William Goldman knew why The Great Waldo Pepper underwhelmed at the box office (from his book Adventures in the Screen Trade), and how exactly the A-Side The Natural literally looks like nostalgia. Finally, we mention why Raul Julia didn't take a credit on Havana, we reference that superb Scott Frank New Yorker profile, proclaim ourselves defenders of Hollywood Homicide, and discuss the end of Redford's career. The son of Canadian TV host Elwy Host, Graham Yost grew up with a love for film, television, and books. “If I told my parents I wanted to be a doctor or lawyer, they would have said, ‘Are you sure you don't want to be a writer?'” Graham's impressive career began with Nickelodeon's ‘Hey Dude' but the movie ‘Speed' changed his life. His credits include Broken Arrow, Hard Rain, Band of Brothers, The Last Castle, Boomtown, The Pacific, Justified, Sneaky Pete, and most recently, Silo. The Apple + series is described as, “Men and women live in a giant silo underground with several regulations which they believe are in place to protect them from the toxic and ruined world on the surface.” In this interview, Graham talks about writing unwitting heroes, how they went about adapting Silo, writing nuclear pilots, the pressure of serving fans of the IP, lessons from Charles Dickens, and how there was no showrunner on Band of Brothers. — Want more? In what's become a Thanksgiving week tradition, we revisit our 2020 Thanksgiving episode with Denise Kiernan. At this time, Joe Biden had been elected but had not yet taken office. Donald Trump was signaling the treason that would boil over into unthinkable violence aimed at our Democratic institutions on January 6th. Covid was roaring. And still, the national celebration of gratitude was taking place. As difficult as things are, and again, they seem fairly hopeless, we want you to know that Alyssa and the entire team at Sorry Not Sorry are grateful for you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. It's Thanksgiving week, and we have an episode for you that will change the way you see the holiday. My guest today is Denise Kiernan. Denise is an author, journalist and producer. Paul Willson and Liam Dempsey from Spocklight: A Star Trek Podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Paul's choice The Last Castle. The Last Castle is a 2001 military action film directed by Rod Lurie. It stars Robert Redford as Lieutenant General Eugene Irwin who is sentenced to 10 years at a maximum security military prison for violating orders that resulted in the deaths of eight soldiers. In charge of the prison is James Gandolfini's Colonel Ed Winter, an admirer of Irwin. Who despite having never seen combat keeps a coveted collection of military artifacts and inflicts punishing behaviour on the prisoners. After a prisoner is killed by a rubber bullet the prisoners start regarding Irwin as their leader and a battle of control between Winter and Irwin intensifies. Mark Ruffalo and Delroy Linda co star. Although released in 2001 The Last Castle would feel at home in the 1990s action genre, all the effects are practical, not digital and how many 00s films feature Robert Redford shirtless carrying rocks in the midday heat? The Last Castle is an easy watch, it might be corny and a bit predictable but the star power of Redford and its no nonsense approach makes it quite endearing. The scores for recommendability reflect this and fall into firmly into the three point fives to four marks. Slightly lower scores for repeat viewing due to its two hour plus runtime give an overall rating of 3.79.   [supsystic-tables id=319] Episode #306 Crew Links Thanks to Episode #306 Crew of David Llong and Neil Gregory from We Needed Roads podcast Find their Websites online at https://twitter.com/BBCSussex and at https://twitter.com/spocklightpod and at https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/spocklight-a-star-trek-podcast/id1150816497?mt=2 Please make sure you give them some love   More about The Last Castle For more info on The Last Castle, you can visit The Last Castle IMDb page here or The Last Castle Rotten Tomatoes page here. A native of Calhoun, Georgia, David Chattam's acting career began purely by accident in 2001 at the tender age of 32. While working a job in the Information Technology field in Nashville, TN, and with no background in, or no aspirations for acting whatsoever, a co-worker convinced him to be an extra in the DreamWorks motion picture “The Last Castle” filming in Nashville. Fate stepped in and on David's first day on set, he was bumped up to a principal role, and the next day found himself doing his very first movie scene ever with James Gandolfini and Delroy Lindo! Two years later, David gave up his position in the world of corporate America, and embarked on a full-time career as an actor. Since then, David has appeared in numerous films, television shows, television and radio commercials, and even has a few audiobook recordings under his belt. He has also amassed an impressive career on stage, working with such noted theatre companies as Nashville Shakespeare Festival, Tennessee Repertory Theatre, and Nashville Children's Theatre. David has even lent his vocal talents for an exhibit in the National Museum of African American History in Washington, DC. Since relocating from Nashville to Los Angeles in 2015, David's career has continued to flourish and he looks forward to the new and exciting challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.www.imdb.com/name/nm1063262/www.instagram.com/davidchattam/Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotographyIG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Sponsorship Information  -  ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne

Jenny Judson and Danielle Mahfood accomplished every girlfriends' childhood dream.  They wrote a book together and published it! Their first book, The Last Season, is newly released and the perfect holiday escape book.  It is a historical fiction, romance novel set in the Victorian Age that follows the relationships of two childhood acquaintances, Crispin and Cassie.  Both Cassie and Crispin are very bright and fiercely loyal to their families.  A series of events pulls them apart and then back together in the most unexpected way.  The Last Season is charming, interesting, and romantic in the most delicious way.  It is a rare book where both main character's individuality is maintained but Judson and Mahfood pull it off.In this podcast episode, Jenny and Danielle answer my questions about the creation of The Last Castle.   I had to know how two people can write a book together.  We discuss the themes in the book and their philosophy on writing the "sexy parts."  We also talk about the plans for their next novel which may feature one of my favorite characters from The Last Season.  Claudine Wolk Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/claudinewolk/Claudine Wolk Blog - https://www.claudinewolk.com/blogThis episode of Stories and Strategies for Women is brought to you by Eyebobs.  Enter code 'StoriesandStrat10" for a 10% discount at eyebobs.comand by ThriftBooks.com, the fun site to buy and collect used books.

This Week on Long Walks and Robots...Ahh Mr. Black, you fail to disappoint once again.  The bots get all oily in the lug nuts over the lost Lethal Weapon storyline known as "The Last Boyscout."  Yippee ki..... what's that?  Oh!  That's not the movie?  Wait... really?  Ok, if you say so.  Well, not to be outdone by the bullets, tits, and guns; Gandolfini and Redford bring the heavy in the military prison drama, "The Last Castle."  When the warden's away, the inmates will play.  Be honest, have you ever even heard the word trebuchet? What if... the show's improving?  The stories of Marvel's newest small-screen endeavor seem to be trending vertically.  Episodes 3 and 4 provide Shane with a renewed outlook for the latter portion of the season.  However, Ryan is one more disappointment away from "heading to the store for some smokes."  Also, with Shang-Chi now in theaters, Shane is going to brave the mega-city to imbibe cinema the good old-fashioned way.   Will he return with refueled hope for the new phase future, or perhaps with a nifty new variant?  Only time will tell. All this and more on Long Walks and Robots...Enjoy!!

The legendary trumpeteer talks his unparalleled career as studio musician in Hollywood and his journey with composer John Williams as principal trumpet on 40+ films between 1973 and 2011, including some of the Maestro's most beloved scores such as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Jurassic Park and the Indiana Jones films Among the musicians who performed for John Williams in Los Angeles, trumpet legend Malcolm McNab has certainly a place of honour. This incredibly talented musician started to perform for the composer in 1973, playing lovely lyrical solos in the score for the film The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (directed by Richard C. Sarafian, starring Burt Reynolds and Sarah Miles). His exquisite playing immediately became a benchmark and, from that moment onward, McNab became principal trumpet for virtually all John Williams's recordings in Los Angeles from 1973 until 2011, becoming one of the longest-serving members (if not the single longest) in his pick-up orchestra: a grand total of 46 film scores, including some of the Maestro's most iconic works like Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, The Witches of Eastwick, Home Alone, Hook, Far and Away, Minority Report, plus several television projects (including Amazing Stories, Great Performances and the theme for the NBC Nightly News programs) and other special projects such as the live-to-picture performance of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the film's 20th anniversary in March 2002. He also had lovely lyrical solos in Stanley & Iris (1990). Malcolm McNab's career highlights don't stop however just at his many successful collaborations with John Williams. The trumpeteer has also been the first-call principal trumpet for many other great Hollywood composers including Jerry Goldsmith, Alex North, James Horner, Randy Newman, James Newton Howard, Bruce Broughton, Michael Kamen, with many of them writing beautiful solo parts especially for him. McNab's truly impressive list of credits includes many of Hollywood's most famous movies of the last 45 years. His playing can be heard in hundreds of memorable soundtracks, including the Rocky series, several Star Trek movies, Pretty Woman, The Karate Kid, Spider-Man 1 and 2, The Sixth Sense, Silverado, Edward Scissorhands, Independence Day, the Lethal Weapon films, Pirates of the Caribbean, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Pixar's Toy Story 1, 2 and 3, Cars and Monsters, Inc., and many, many others. He can be heard as featured soloist in John Barry's Dances With Wolves, Randy Newman's Avalon, Jerry Goldsmith's L.A. Confidential and The Last Castle, James Horner's Glory, just to name a few. In this rich, in-depth conversation, Malcolm talks about his career as studio musician legend, performing for virtually every great composer in Hollywood and performing both exquisite solos and virtuosic trumpet parts in many film scores. He talks at length about his many years performing for John Williams, from the first gig in 1973 to the success of scores like Jaws, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Jurassic Park, reflecting on the evolution of the trumpet section in Williams's scores and the challenges of performing very difficult parts on many occasions, but also the fun and the joy of recording source music for Jaws and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. McNab also recollects his experiences with rock legend Frank Zappa, his friendship with Uan Rasey and his many collaborations with Jerry Goldsmith.
