7000apart is truly an international band. Multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Kresin is from Green Bay, Wisconsin and his wife, vocalist Amelie Eiding, is from Stockholm, Sweden. The melding of the two cultures has produced some outstanding pop music that combines elements of rock, rap, ballads, power pop, and a good dose of that Swedish musical influence. Their ever expanding sonic palette produces sounds and textures that give their songs more character than most of the commercial pop music available today. Jon and Amelie are two of the most generous people, always giving of themselves to give a boost to fellow artists and to help improve life for others.NOTE: This episode contains discussion regarding mental health from a personal perspective. What motivates you to continue doing what it takes to maintain your healthy lifestyle after losing weight? And what does the title of today's episode, “When the Lights Go Down in the Stadium” have to do with maintaining weight loss? Listen as I present an introduction to the topic of motivation and how some people relish the attention they receive as they lose weight. While not everyone enjoys being noticed, some people treasure the nearly daily comments they receive about how amazing they look as they are losing weight. They bask in the joy of hearing how inspiring they are to others. They soak up the feedback related to their improvements in self-confidence and overall demeanor. But when they get to a healthy weight, they sort of blend into the crowd and for them, it can be like when the lights go down in the stadium. There's no more fanfare. The compliments fade. It's quiet. Some people then feel invisible so they repeat the cycle of regaining and losing weight, not realizing how important that external motivation is for them. Where does your motivation come from? Here Serene and Steve run down the first six songs of what would figuratively be a double album on vinyl, the 24 Originals Happening Now album, which was modeled after a 1967 TV record album offer called 24 Original Happening Hits. This miracle of science crammed 24 songs onto two sides of vinyl by severely editing and prematurely fading out all your favorites, which K-Tel also did later on. Serene has a back history for each of the 24 made up groups he concocted for each selection. Musical genres covered on Side 1 include jangle-pop (Serene actually tried getting "Unfriend Me" to the Gin Blossoms with no success), Britrock, indie rock, glitter, lounge and white-boy reggae. Other topics of discussion include Esteban, the merits of the Kia Spectra EX, the question of whether Phil Spector is allowed to wear wigs in jail and how a movie might have killed off friends with benefits for everyone.Songs include "Unfriend Me," "The Lights Go Down and Out" "Independent Thought," "Sarsaparilla Lillian," "That Lounging" and "FWB (Friends With Benefits)."Click here to watch all 24 Original Happening Now Videos and subscribe to the Serene Dominic YouTube channel!Click here to stream the entire 24 Originals Happening Now! album.Click here to stream a Spotify playlist of the 24 Original Happening Hits! collection that inspired this album (only one song had to be substituted).Catch Serene Dominic's weekly livecast "The Human Torch Floor Show" every Thursday at 8:30 MST on facebook.com/serenedominic

Boromir, who was apparently napping through that part of the Council, continues to push for the Gap of Rohan. Finally, Gandalf makes a motion to go through Moria, and is seconded by a pack of hungry wargs. Amazingly, we do not revisit the whole warg/wolf/werewolf thing again (just kidding; we totally do). Plus, a heartwarming letter from the Professor to the Tolkien Society in This Week in Tolkien History.

In the last episode we spoke with David van Gennep, the Executive Director of AAP – a rescue and rehabilitation centre, mainly known for helping chimpanzees, with a centre in the Netherlands and another one in Spain. Today, we're staying on a similar subject. In this episode we're speaking with Olga Feliu who is the Director of the MONA Foundation – that's a sanctuary for chimpanzees located near to the town of Girona in Catalunya, Spain. Yes, we have the same name, so for clarity whenever I speak about “Olga” from now on, it's not about me, it's about our guest! The chimpanzees that live at the "MONA sanctuary" are mostly former TV advert and circus stars. Celebrities, really. Whichever country we live in, we've probably seen an advert for fast food or a brand of tea. How much fun they always seemed to be having in those situations, we all thought, including me when I was a child. It wasn't until I visited the MONA sanctuary that I found out that the fall from TV stardom for a chimpanzee is a sad and grave event which tends to see them sent to live in a (usually tiny and filthy) cage for the rest of their lives. This is an episode where we explore the lives of some of the chimpanzees that Olga's amazing team has looked after over the years. We talk about the other situations where chimpanzees are kept as pets and, of course, what their journey looks like when they reach a place like the MONA sanctuary where they can experience at least a fraction of a "normal" life as a chimpanzee.   About our guest OLGA FELIU, Co-founder, Board member and Director of MONA. Brave, pragmatic and always optimistic. Olga always sees the bright side of things and that has made the MONA project a reality out of nothing. Olga is a veterinary graduate who has worked with animals for the entirety of her career. She also has a Master´s Degree in Primatology and Doctorate in Primate Ethology at the University of Barcelona. Olga founded and runs the Fundació MONA Sanctuary and Recuperation centre in the province of Girona, Catalunya, Spain.   Now, in the last episode with David from AAP we already learned that there's a surprisingly large trade in wild animals across Europe. In fact, because Spain is a gateway from Africa into Europe, it's often the entry point for animals like chimpanzees and macaques who are caught in the wild and then… through a chain… sold on to people who keep them as pets or as workers. Olga is going to talk to us about the kind of things that she has seen over her career. In fact, she was a vet specialising in the health of baby cows. One day, the company she worked for got a call from someone who needed help with chimpanzees! Olga was the one sent to meet a British chap called Simon Templar (not many of her colleagues spoke English) who was privately rescuing chimpanzees from some terrible situations and giving them a safe home. That was some 20 years ago, but that was the meeting which was to change the course of Olga's life, as she'll explain, and saw her becoming a go to person for the Customs department of the Spanish Government. So, whenever they had found an illegally kept chimpanzee and wanted to confiscate it, they'd call Olga to try find a home for it. Hence, she found out just how many of these poor chimpanzees were finding themselves far from home, working in circuses, as TV stars or living as pets in apartments. And so, as good people do, she decided to do something about it. I have visited the MONA sanctuary several times, met many of the staff there and also got to know the stories of the chimpanzees and barbary macaques they have there. It's not a huge place, and the setup is two separate enclosures for the chimpanzees where they live in their little groups, and then their connected bedrooms where they go at night. There's also a sort of separate quarantine / introduction area which is where new chimps first live when they arrive.   The chimpanzees enjoying life in one of the enclosures at MONA. Sonny and I have been to a ton of concerts over the years between us. There have been great ones and some not so great, but the one thing we both agree on, is that one of the most hair raising, goosebumps giving moments of the entire night, is when those house lights go down, that intro tape rolls, and the band comes on the stage with a flash kickin’ ass launching into that first song of the night. On this episode, I speak with Jason Dunn, vocalist of pop-punk band Lights Go Down. You might easily recognize Jason as the former lead vocalist for Hawk Nelson, who were once one of the most dominant rock bands in the CCM market, playing to thousands of people nightly for a significantly long stretch of time. I speak with Jason about Lights Go Down, who are currently recording their debut EP in New York City, after being successfully funded through crowdfunding website IndieGoGo. The 14 year old version of myself wouldn’t have believed that this conversation happened! @thejasondunn picks: Farcry 4 (PS3 Game), Poltergeist (Movie), The Story So Far, @Jake_Denning picks: Lip Sync Battle (TV show), NHL Playoffs www.twitter.com/thejasondunn www.twitter.com/officiallgd www.facebook.com/lightsgodownmusic If you enjoyed this episode, please head over to iTunes and write a positive review, it really does help the show grow and help new people discover it.

Power failure on the scale we recently saw with Super Storm Sandy does NOT have to happen. But it will happen, over and over again, unless antiquated energy infrastructure is updated. Today we are joined by Dr. Massoud Amin, a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and member of the IEEE Computer Society's Task Force on Security and Privacy. In the aftermath of the tragic events of 9/11, he directed all security-related research and development at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, California, including the Infrastructure Security Initiative (ISI) and the Enterprise Information Security (EIS). We will discuss the implications of the power outages along the East Coast; what U.S. utilities need to do to improve their power grid infrastructure; and how green energy alternatives or the smart grid help to prevent/limit future outages.
