Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade in which we talk to the two key players behind Publicis Group's purchase of independent Media agency Atomic 212. The agency had been rumoured to be considering offers for some time. What was a little more surprising though was the buyer. Despite rumours that consultancy Accenture was in the frame, holding company Publicis Group emerged as the winner. It ran counter to the trend of holdcos in retreat and consolidating their number of agency brands. In today's audio-led conversation, Atomic 212 chairman Barry O'Brien and Publicis Group's ANZ CEO Michael Rebelo discuss with Tim Burrowes the rationale for the deal.O'Brien acknowledges the ups and downs of the agency's journey, including when Atomic's client, retail chain Dick Smith went into administration, leaving its agency potentially owing media companies millions of dollars.“When we first kicked off, Dick Smith went belly up and left $400-odd million of debt right around Australia.“As a young agency, we were left with a considerable amount of that. That was a pretty dark time.”The agency also faced a reputation crisis when Mumbrella revealed that former boss Jason Dooris had been cheating in award entries. Dooris eventually left the business. O'Brien says, dryly, “It was not a highlight.”Meanwhile, Rebelo explains the rationale for the acquisition at a time when many groups are trimming their rosters. Capabilities and client conflict are two of the factors. When he built a three year plan for his group in 2023, “acquisition of a media agency like Atomic was literally one of our top strategic priorities,” reveals Rebelo.“What we were looking at with Atomic was how can we supercharge what we've already got? What we like to curate and cultivate in the group are specialized weapons in terms of the agencies in how they can help our clients solve their marketing problems. And Atomic represented an independent agency with really sophisticated capabilities.”Rebelo, insists that unlike previous acquisition Match, which is these days folded in to Spark Foundry, Atomic will remain as its own brand. “Conflict and managing conflict is still a big part of the market and the industry. So we are fortunate to have those independent brands that can manage different agencies across the verticals. Having another media brand to take on and help us manage that is certainly a benefit to this.”Time to leave you to your Monday. Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Brian Peterson is joined by Jason Inderhees to talk about the latest market research and AI news!  Kicking off the episode, Jason and Brian discuss the latest Bellwether report from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), which found that market research budgets declined in Q4 2024. It also mentioned that the industry is expected to decrease by 1% over the next few years. Jason talks about how, while the overall industry may decline, pockets still experience growth, and you just need to uncover them. Next, the guys talk about the new appointment to the Toluna board. They ponder if this accelerates Toluna's move to target brands and offers them a full suite of solutions. The guys then switch gears a bit and talk about a $33 million investment in Anomalo, a California-based data quality platform. They talk about how the platform works and if there are any potential applications for the market research industry. The second half of the episode starts off with the debut of the new intro music for the AI News segment. Jason and Brian then dig into some recent AI news stories, including news that Publicis Group plans to invest 300 million Euros in AI over the next three years. The next few AI stories aren't market research-specific but could impact the industry and industries we serve. First, the guys talk about the recently issued executive order around AI that aims to ensure that the US leads the way and manages the risk of artificial intelligence. Brian and Jason postulate that this is probably just the start of AI legislation.  In the last story, they guys dive deep into news that New York had proposed a new law called the New York Robot Act that would impose a tax surcharge on “using technology to displace workers,” in an amount equal to taxes and fees that would have been paid on what an employee would have earned in the eliminated position. Jason and Brian are a bit on opposite sides of the debate on this one, but come out at the end seeing each other's point of view. Thanks for tuning in! He discusses his view on leadership and the importance of nurturing a culture that inspires change.  Confessions Over Insights Ariel's 'Share the Load' campaign's foundation lies in the raw confessions of individuals, not just insights. This approach strips away societal facades, revealing the true hypocrisies that exist. The campaign challenges societal norms and aims to ignite cultural change, addressing issues like patriarchy through everyday decisions. Creating Value Beyond Campaigns Kishore emphasizes the need for agencies to focus on creating value rather than just campaigns. Clients who trust in this philosophy reap the rewards of authentic engagement. Brands, according to Kishore, act as magnets, attracting individuals who resonate with their beliefs. This attraction forms the basis of brand loyalty and advocacy. Cultural Strategy Over Brand Purpose Kishore advocates for a shift towards cultural strategy over brand purpose alone. In a rapidly evolving landscape, brands must align with broader cultural shifts to remain relevant. He underscores the significance of cultural resonance, highlighting 'What an Idea Sirji' campaign of Idea which looked at the transformational societal impact of a mobile.  Leadership & Culture Leadership, to Kishore, transcends titles and designations. It's about actions, contributions, and fostering a culture of listening and mentorship. He emphasizes the value of collective wisdom within organizations, acknowledging the wealth of insights and experiences each team member brings to the table. Kishore underscores the importance of nurturing a culture of openness, authenticity, and accountability within organizations to drive meaningful change. Mark Miller is the co-author of ‘Legacy in the Making: Building a Long-Term Brand to Stand Out in a Short-Term World'. He is the founder of The Legacy Lab, a thought leadership and consulting practice that explores how brands can build modern legacies; and he is also Chief Strategy Officer at Team One, Publicis Group's global luxury and premium brand agency.Recently, Mark and his strategy team at The Legacy Lab published a pioneering study. It reports on the rare breed of leaders and brands writing history every day, the people they inspire to bring the past forward, and the physical or digital products and experiences they create to build lasting legacies in a short-term world. Traditionally, “legacy” refers to the past. This important study examines legacy as a still-vital part of today. The resulting book, ‘Legacy in the Making', has been endorsed by Simon Sinek as “a must-read for anyone who wants their work to last beyond their lifetime.” It was a #1 new release on Amazon and a bestseller on the Washington Post list and other places.I get sent many books as a result of hosting this show, and this is one of the best I've seen in a long time. Difficult Conversations -Lessons I learned as an ICU Physician

Welcome to Difficult Conversations.  Today, we have Liz Poret-Christ hosting along with Dr. Orsini.  A few weeks ago, when Liz was scrolling through Facebook, she came across the PELOTON Cancer Warriors page and saw a post by Gina Jacobson. Her thoughts about battling cancer, mixed with a bit of dark humor, and a lot of honesty made Liz realize that she would be a great guest on this podcast. So, joining us today is Gina Jacobson. For the past twenty-seven years, Gina has worked in a broad range of roles with the Publicis Group, including overseeing media at Starcom and creative development at Leo Burnett. Her official title at Starcom is Chief Growth Officer, but she thinks of herself as a “Chief Potential Officer.” She's known for her critical strategic thinking, digging into her client's businesses, and has a passion for building and nurturing teams who deliver engaging, strategic work.   Gina was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in 2018, and has outlived her prognosis by several years, and intends to keep living a joyful and purposeful life, helping others realize their full potential.  Get ready to hear Gina's story and be inspired! Gina shares her background story and how she got to where she is today with her career. We learn how her leadership style and philosophy of “recognizing fear” started, and she goes in depth how her philosophy deepened after her cancer diagnosis.  Gina tells us about the breakdown she had at a conference in front of her whole leadership team and reveals how having cancer changed her philosophy of leadership, how she views the world, her job, and how being more vulnerable helped her and her co-workers. We hear the story about the four oncologists Gina interviewed and how their communication affected her ability to envision a successful path forward. She explains how each of the conversations went, and how she ultimately chose the one that communicated with her in a way that she felt this physician was her advocate and one that she could trust. With the great connection she had with this physician, she makes a point that the positive attitude certainly made for an easier journey and a more tolerable journey.  Gina describes her cancer journey as a “masterclass in fear” and shares her message to everyone.  We hear about her blog and a post she wrote about telling the kids, and specifically one with her son, and his response that felt like a knife in the gut for a mother to hear. We end with Gina telling us the type of conversation she finds most challenging and the strategies she's developed to get better at having those difficult conversations. Rishad is one of the smartest minds in the ad business. He moved from Bombay to Chicago to do an MBA in Marketing and Finance at the University of Chicago, got hired at Leo Burnett and stayed for his entire career. That's not entirely correct- he worked his way across and up to the very top of the Publicis Group becoming Chief Strategist and Member of the Directoire. He spent his career thinking about the future especially in media and digital- he had roles at Starcom and help created a number of companies and was Chairman of Digitas LBI and Razorfish. He has a unique set of experiences that make him well-equipped to take observe some of the key macro trends and developments. In 2020, Rishad wrote his first book "Restoring the Soul of Business: Staying Human in the Age of Data" which was critically acclaimed with Strategy and Business naming it one of its top business books of 2020....he makes as thoroughly documented a case as I have come across for why the businesses that thrive are those whose leaders know that what made them great is their human resources. Tobaccowala singles out mighty customer- and user-focused corporations — Walmart, Starbucks, Domino’s, Google — that have “successfully reoriented their thinking on how to fuse technology and humanity,” while he warns of “data-blinded companies” that stumble when they do not correct such matters as “stifled employees [who are] not encouraged to contribute ideas or insights” and “poor customer service due to automated, robotic processes that cause frustration and hurt the brand.”....In my conversation with Rishad, we talked about the book, what he has learned from his experiences, his background, and his thoughts on the business implications of the pandemic.
