It's just Jack this week as Rick was unable to join in. The choice for this week was not a great a one but also not a bad one. The character development was poor, and the story was lacking. The artwork for it was solid and the music was good for when it was there. But that is all that it really had going for it. If you are just getting into the BL genre this would not be one to watch for the first. Next week's choice is Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. On August 15, 1994, at 11:15pm 911 dispatchers in Salt Lake City, Utah received numerous phone calls from a cozy, middle class neighborhood. Several people reported hearing a terrible screaming, howling sounds as if someone was being t0rtured. When police arrived in the neighborhood several minutes later, they were able to follow the awful sound into the backyard of one of the houses lining the street. When they arrived, they found several brave neighbors with flashlights and a hysterical man standing in a koi pond, screaming and throwing heavy rocks and bricks into the water. The neighbors had clearly been trying to comfort the man for some time, but he was absolutely inconsolable. As the p0lice got closer, they also noticed the b0dy of a woman, lying on the ground near the pond. Neighbors at the scene told police that the woman on the ground was 29-year-old Pamela Mead, and the hysterical man in the pond was her 30-year-old husband, David Mead. Prophecy and those claiming to prophesy are subject to testing and to judgment. No one is immune to this scrutiny, including yours truly. Several years ago, I wrote a blog post that was shared on other popular Charismatic media outlets. This post centered around Ezekiel 47 and private vague revelations I ascribed to God telling me in the secret place. Join me as we take a look at this "prophetic word", as we put it to the test of Scripture and see which one prevails in the richness of understanding and true prophecy. As a child, were you encouraged to embrace your uniqueness? Or were you told that it was important to learn to be more like everyone else? One of my favorite things is knowing moms that I see as a reflection of myself. Moms who mommy by their own rules, show empathy, and embrace their spirituality. These are moms who have done the work, read the books, and learned how to grow and expand as humans so that they don't pass on their traumas to their kids. The fact is, we all have trauma, but it takes dedication to heal and seek help.Today, I'm talking to Instagram star and my girlfriend-in-my-head, Anita Kopacz. Anita is an amazing, light-filled author, spiritual psychologist, and mommy who just published her debut novel, Shallow Waters.Tune in and listen to episode eight of Mamaste with Tanika Ray. If you've been triggered by the word ‘trauma,' I feel you. Once I did the work, I realized that it's a hurdle our emotional intelligence has to jump over in order to navigate this world. Anita and I talk about what it's like to write a book with kids at home, she tells me about the spiritual beliefs behind Shallow Waters, and we discuss why she wrote her book with healing generational trauma in mind. Some Questions I ask:What was the journey like that brought you to writing your book? (14:12)How old were your kids when you started writing Shallow Waters? (16:36)Can you tell me about the Yemaya circle that you recently held? (18:56)Is this book the first of a series? Or do you see this as a closed circle? (28:48)In This Episode, You Will Learn:We're all desperately in need of healing, and doing the work isn't always easy (4:15)There's no better time than now to strengthen our foundation so that we can truly raise our kids through better circumstances (10:53)A little background on the Orïsha and the beliefs that surround them (20:08)The incredibly emotional experience Anita has when rereading her work (24:38)Connect with Anita:InstagramFacebookShallow Waters: A Novel by Anita KopaczLet's Connect!WebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Paul Samuel Dolman, host of the What Matters Most podcast, speaks with Anita Kopacz, author of the magic realism novel Shallow Waters. The post Anita Kopacz #894 appeared first on Paul Samuel Dolman.
When I spoke to @anitakopacz about her new novel, I had only read a few pages, but I knew Shallow Waters would be a book I would love. This book reminds me of books by two of my favorite authors, Tananrive Due and Octavia Butler. It is very similar to Children of Blood and Bone by Nigerian author Tomi Adeyemi. I love how modern day myths are being written about African characters. The Creator, expressing as our African ancestors, are speaking in multiple ways. Our collective consciousness is seeing ourselves as powerful and supported by the mysticism that is the nature of this Universe. We have been taught to ignore it. We have done so at our peril. Shallow Waters, gives us a myth to help us conceive of ourselves differently. Kopacz is Spiritual Psychologist as well as an Artist and healer. Our conversation was so rich that I invited her to come back on the show to discuss the healing work she is doing at her upcoming retreat. Anita talks about the ritual she used to petition Yemaya and how the energy of the ocean responded and much more! Accolades for Shallow Waters, A Novel Spellbinding...A captivating debut.” —Harper's Bazaar In this stirring and lyrical debut novel—perfect for fans of The Water Dancer and the Legacy of Orïsha series—the Yoruba deity of the sea, Yemaya, is brought to vivid life as she discovers the power of Black resilience, love, and feminine strength in antebellum America. Shallow Waters imagines Yemaya, an Orïsha—a deity in the religion of Africa's Yoruba people—cast into mid-1800s America. We meet Yemaya as a young woman, still in the care of her mother and not yet fully aware of the spectacular power she possesses to protect herself and those she holds dear. The journey laid out in Shallow Waters sees Yemaya confront the greatest evils of this era; transcend time and place in search of Obatala, a man who sacrifices his own freedom for the chance at hers; and grow into the powerful woman she was destined to become. We travel alongside Yemaya from her native Africa and on to the “New World,” with vivid pictures of life for those left on the outskirts of power in the nascent Americas. Yemaya realizes the fighter within, travels the Underground Railroad in search of the mysterious stranger Obatala, and crosses paths with icons of our history on the road to freedom. Shallow Waters is a nourishing work of ritual storytelling from promising debut author Anita Kopacz. Anita Kopacz is an award-winning writer and spiritual advisor. She is the former Editor-in-Chief of Heart & Soul Magazine and Managing Editor of BeautyCents Magazine. When she is not writing, you can find her on the dance floor or traveling the world with her children. Anita lives in New York City with her family. Anita Kopacz frames the spiritual path of kidnapped Africans as they journey through the Middle Passage. The historical storytelling of Yemaya, Goddess of the sea, acknowledges the strength enslaved people maintained through African religions. Their spirituality further strengthened the pride of those who, on the surface, were stripped of everything material. Shallow Waters is teaching a new generation the root of black womanhood by way of Yemaya. If nothing else the audience will be awarded a hold on their own divinity. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Alongside raising three children, working as an editor, and practicing as a spiritual psychologist, Anita Kopacz spent seven years creating the magnificent work of art that is Shallow Waters, her debut novel. Part historical fiction and part parable, Shallow Waters deals with deep ancestral trauma through ritual storytelling. The heroine of the book is a Black mermaid, Yemaya, and you'll hear Anita's reasoning for centering her story around this mythical deity, and what she thinks is the most valuable lesson that readers can learn from her. In today's episode, we cover how Anita heals her own generational wounds by writing this story, a gift which she hopes it will also give to others. • Anita shares the quirks that make her describe her younger self as strange.• Where Anita's family is from.• A description of the deity, Yemaya, that is the protagonist of Anita's book, Shallow Waters, andwhat the story is about.• The connection that Anita feels to Yemaya. • How the process of writing Shallow Waters was healing for Anita.• Unexpected feedback that Anita has received from readers of her book.• Why Anita chose to write a work of fiction. • A novel that Anita read in high school which had a profound impact on her.• How the Yemaya in Anita's book differs from the mythical deity that she is based on.• Reasons that Anita decided not to include any sexual trauma in the book.• The target audience that the book was originally intended for, and why that changed.• An important lesson that readers can learn from Yemaya.• Anita's love for ritual storytelling and her plans for the future in this realm.• Advice from Anita on transitioning from non-fiction to fiction writing.• Fears that Anita has managed to overcome.• The process Anita went through to get Shallow Waters out into the world.• A valuable lesson Anita learned about how to deal with writer's block.• Anita's request to buy the book from independent outlets. Content Warning for sexual trauma and gender-based violence. Have you ever felt a spiritual connection with an ancestor or other higher being? Have you ever had difficulty recognizing when your intuition is guiding you? These are just two of the eye-opening concepts explored in this Coach Chat conversation with Anita Kopacz. Anita is a spiritual psychologist, and author of the newly released novel, Shallow Waters, published through Black Privilege Publishing at Simon & Schuster. The novel imagines Yemaya, an Orïsha—a deity in the religion of Africa's Yoruba people—in mid-1800s America. Readers meet Yemaya as a young woman who is not yet fully aware of the spectacular power she possesses to protect herself and those she holds dear. When we're open, we can experience a lot through our senses, yet many teachings tell us to ignore those experiences. In this episode, you'll hear about Anita's first connection with a spiritual being, and how she was treated by others when they learned of her gift. She shares in the conversation that she has been connected to Yemaya since she was 18 years old. Coach Colette and Anita discuss how Western psychology fails to incorporate spirituality and indigenous traditions, and how this initially made accepting her abilities challenging for Anita. The two also explore how Anita's childhood experience of molestation became an inspiration behind her campaign, Zero F's Given, which aims to raise awareness and help survivors heal from sexual trauma, find their voice, and reclaim their power. If you're looking to hear about monumental transformation and spiritual growth, or you just want an amazing teaser of Shallow Waters, this episode is a must-listen! Join us for this real talk with OG brujas, Vanessa and Anita! We begin with a gentle meditation and flow into Anita's journey with her intuition, sexual healing and Orisha energy showing up to guide her on her life's journey. Anita shares the re-imagined inspirational story of Yemaya set in a historical period that will be published later this year in 2020 under the title Shallow Waters. We get real about alchemizing healing, intuitive business, sexual trauma and healing, her documentary and growing her beautiful family. We laugh, we tear up and as OG healers we knew changes were coming and that we are READY! Some conversation points: * How Orishas and guiding energies have shown up in our lives * Multi-tasking and focus as we manage our lives and business. * Alchemizing and clients doing their sacred work. * How our wounds bring us to our soul purpose and Anita shares about her sexual abuse and her sexual healing. * Ancestral trauma and how it can affect our children. * Following Spirit and finding ways to do the work you feel called to do no matter the obstacles. * Showing our wounds and the act of being seen heals us. * Tending our seeds of creation and having patience. * Sexual trauma and ways of protecting ourselves. * Falling in love with shadow, sadness and the deep waters. We've reached the final act of Dragon Age II, and things are...not looking so hot for our podcast's darling as the story's weakest points become blatantly apparent. This week we're running errands for Meredith and Orsino while also realizing how little we've gotten to know these major players. We'll also get to check in real quick with an old friend, though we're not sure exactly how we feel about his inclusion. Enjoy the show!
