A Word With You

I'm one of those people with a wall-to-wall schedule I'm afraid. And maybe like you, there's just like no time in there for Murphy's Law - no time for anything to go wrong. Occasionally, Mr. Murphy does visit me. Some years ago I was on an overseas assignment for a youth ministry in New Zealand. You can't get much farther from home than that. And I had booked a lot of meetings for as soon as I returned; which is typical of my crazy schedule. "Oh boy, as soon as I get back we'll have this meeting and that meeting." The problem was that while I was in New Zealand (you ready?) all the DC10s in the world were grounded. Yeah, there was some kind of a flaw or defect, and they grounded all of those planes. And I was stuck with about 4,000 other Americans in New Zealand, because what flew out of New Zealand at that time was pretty much DC10s. Oh, I was frustrated! I wanted to get out of there; I needed to get back. I had a schedule!" Well, somebody offered me a home and they said, "Look, this home is vacant right now. Why don't you go in there and take it until you can get a plane?" So, the next morning I woke up all frustrated and anxious, but I went to sleep that night very excited and very much at peace. Now, you may be stuck in a situation right now, you're frustrated by a detour from the plan like I was. Well, like me, stranded 10,000 miles away from home, you may be about to learn a wonderful secret. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Detour is the Main Road." I had been asking God for some time prior to my New Zealand stranded experience, for some time just to stop and reflect. I said, "Lord, I just need to stop and get in a room somewhere for a day or two with just You and my Bible and a legal pad." Yep, so God took me 10,000 miles to stop me so I could have what I had been asking for. I woke up that morning in New Zealand saying, "Well, I'm not going anywhere." And when I realized that, then I realized I could meet with the Lord there! And boy did I ever! In fact, I couldn't write fast enough! After I spent some extended hours with Him, my legal pad was going. I thought I was going to overheat and melt down from the ideas He was giving me. I couldn't write them down fast enough. You know, He works that way with His kids. He has for a long time. Exodus 19:1-3, our word for today from the Word of God. It says, "In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt, they came to the Desert of Sinai. And they entered the Desert of Sinai and Israel camped there in the desert in front of a mountain. Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain." And verse 11 says, "On the third day the Lord will come down on Mt. Sinai in the sight of all the people." Now, Mt. Sinai wasn't on the way to the Promised Land. From where they were it was a detour; it was a southern detour. I'm sure I might have said, "Hey, wait! This isn't the way to Canaan." But God detoured them to meet them dramatically at Sinai and to give them the Ten Commandments and a historic revelation from Him. What appeared to be a detour was actually the main road. Now, God will often take you on a sudden detour from your course so you can see Him better. For a spirit-led follower of Christ, there is destiny in each detour. Something God wants to do in your life that can only be done by slowing you down, and stopping your relentless forward progress. Have you had any detours lately? Maybe your health, your finances, a dream that's on hold, a relationship that meant a lot is coming apart. Even daily detours when your schedule gets interrupted by someone or something that just drops in. Well, remember, when God directs you to a sidetrack, that's no accident. He wants to meet you there. God's sidetracks are often God's Sinais. Trust that today's unplanned diversions are really part of the plan. Remember, when God is leading His people, the detour is really the main road.

Waipawa businesses fear the partial closure of the main road through the small central hawkes bay town could kill them. The say they only found out last week that the North bound lane of State Highway two will closed for up to six weeks, with a diversion taking precious customers away from the town centre and shops while the district's still getting back on its feet after the cyclone. The road closure is for storm water maintenance and the installation of raised safety crossings. Waipawa Butchery owner Duncan Smith speaks to Lisa Owen. Waka Kotahi says the Waipawa community has been advocating for speed reduction and safety improvements for its main street - and consultation with the community began at the beginning of the year. It says it listened to the business community and adapted its traffic management for the stormwater work to a stop-go arrangement that allows traffic to travel both directions and use the car parks outside the shops. It will be working on an adjusted traffic management plan for construction of the crossings and will share these with the community prior to construction start. Overnight work was considered, but is not possible for the raised safety platforms. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6337123988112

Explorex's website: https://explorex.co/ When Nicolas moved to India from France for an internship, he was struck by nostalgia for the sandwiches from his homeland. And so, he embarked on a culinary journey. In 2015, he took a bold step and launched a food truck called Paris Panini in Bengaluru, with the aim of introducing gourmet French street food to the city.Paris Panini was among the pioneering food trucks in Bangalore, housed within a converted old-school van. Its weekly route quickly gained a following, with customers tracking its whereabouts through social media and forming long queues upon its arrival.Introducing a novel product to the Indian market posed its challenges, but Nicolas was determined to refine the menu to cater to local tastes while preserving the authenticity of French cuisine. One of Nicolas's key objectives was to change the prevailing perception of Indian street food as being predominantly unhealthy and unhygienic. To achieve this, the food truck was designed with an open counter, allowing customers to witness the panini preparation process, and fostering trust through a professional and hygienic live kitchen experience on wheels.Initially, the menu was quite limited, featuring approximately ten items. The primary focus was on delivering high-quality products crafted from fresh ingredients. Every item was painstakingly made from scratch, including the hand-cut and double-fried French fries that have since become iconic, reflecting the preparation methods in Nicolas's hometown of Arras, in northern France.Nicolas's unwavering passion and dedication catapulted Paris Panini into the limelight. The food truck gained immense popularity, leading to invitations to cater for major festivals, birthday parties, and weddings throughout the city. However, the food truck scene in Bangalore was marked by unpredictability, primarily due to the absence of regulation. At one point, the city's notorious traffic congestion even led to a temporary ban on food trucks. As Paris Panini's popularity continued to soar, Nicolas faced the challenge of scaling up his operations. This pivotal moment arrived when Nicolas crossed paths with AB and Nikhil from The Pizza Bakery, who shared his vision of transitioning Paris Panini from a food truck concept to a brick-and-mortar casual dining restaurant. They remained committed to maintaining the brand's core values while developing an extensive menu that would provide customers with an authentic Parisian cafe experience. In November 2019, Paris Panini opened its doors on the bustling 12th Main Road in Indiranagar, Bangalore. The restaurant's walls were adorned with hand-drawn Parisian street scenes, effectively transporting patrons to a Parisian cafe ambiance. The menu showcased gourmet panini, signature French fries, freshly brewed coffee, and delectable crepes, offering an authentic culinary journey.Today, Paris Panini boasts a rapidly expanding fan base, with the brand establishing itself in ten locations across Bangalore. It has quickly risen to become the city's leading purveyor of gourmet sandwiches, serving as a testament to Nicolas's dedication and commitment to bringing a taste of authentic French cuisine to the heart of India.

Thames Coromandel Mayor Len Salt says yet another washout forcing a section of State Highway 25 down to one lane is bringing more anxiety to the region. State Highway 25 from Whangamatā to Hikuai had become a key link to the peninsula after more than 100m of SH25A from Kopu to Hikuwai was washed away in a slip. "What we're sensing now amongst the people in our district is a very much heightened level of anxiety about the weather," Salt told Checkpoint. "When we had SH25A ... it gave us an alternative, now that alternative has really got to be taken off the table for nine months to a year... then it leaves the rest of the roading network in such a vulnerable state that we'd be pretending to say that we weren't anxious about it. "What we would like to get some certainty on, and we continue to ask this question, is the rest of the roading network. We have to have some certainty for our business people, for our communities, for our social and economic wellbeing." Salt said he's keen to see a ferry network going. And he has had offers. One was from the Hauraki Māori Trust Board. "They run mussel barges. So we've had a conversation started with them... they've opened the door and said maybe we can help with that."

It's the caricature of France, a person wearing a beret and carrying a baguette, or French loaf as we tend to call it, under their arm. But it is true that the country has a long tradition of making all kinds of delicious bread and you cannot have a meal in France without some on the table. So, it's no surprise that the Paris-Cape Town bakery, which opened its doors in June, was recently named as a new hotspot by the prestigious food guide, Eat Out. Situated on the Main Road in Sea Pont near the Artem Centre, it's owned by Parisian businessman, Laurent Bezaudun, and offers a wide range of bread, quiches, sandwiches, and pastries. And they're all made according to age-old traditions by three French bakers and pastry chefs, including our guest today, Serena Obadia. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And today, we’re excited to have Mary Gauerke on the podcast. Mary is the marketing manager for the Gallatin Parks and Recreation Department. Hey, Mary, welcome to the podcast. Mary Gauerke 0:24 Thank you! Happy to be here. John Haggard 0:26 Glad to have you here. And I think before we dive into your role and what you’re doing there, people want to say well, who is Mary Gauerke? So before we talk about Gallatin-Sumner County, and for those who are new to the area, or may know you and just want to know more about you, tell us a little bit about your background. Did you grow up in Gallatin or are you an import from somewhere? Mary Gauerke 0:49 I’m an import. John Haggard 0:50 You’re an import? Mary Gauerke 0:51 Yes. I’m a Midwestern import from the burbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. And I’m a mom and a wife. And I have two beautiful teenagers at Hendersonville High School. John Haggard 1:08 Let’s go back just for a moment when you were in the Midwest, and you’re saying Milwaukee area, did I get that right? Mary Gauerke 1:14 Yes, yes, Milwaukee area. I’m from the largest village in the state of Wisconsin. Menominee Falls, Wisconsin. John Haggard 1:23 Alright, so when you were in high school, sometimes, high school can be some of the most fun years and sometimes the most formative years in terms of where people go from there. But, what did you do in high school that was maybe the most fun? Mary Gauerke 1:39 I have a couple of things that stand out in my head. It seems like, that’s been decades ago that I was in high school, but the two things that stand out are one: I participated in a program called the Art Satellite Program where I got to leave my high school at noon and got on a bus that was chartered through the school system. And that bus would take me to downtown Milwaukee. And I got to spend the rest of my day at the Milwaukee Art Museum during this Art Satellite Program. So I studied curative art, art by the masters, drawing, and painting, and that was my emphasis. And so, you know, in those formative years, where you think, Oh, I just, I just don’t fit in. I was very blessed to, I guess being at a high school that just embraced the arts. And I found my niche and that was in Visual Arts and I had so much fun doing that and learning from professors and learning from, you know what it’s like to run a museum, a world-class museum and that was probably one of my bigger things that I remember from high school. And the other one is that I was very, very much involved in the 4-H Program in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. And now as a mom, my kids are highly involved in Sumner County 4-H. John Haggard 3:30 Is there anything different today about 4-H versus years ago? Mary Gauerke 3:36More now. They embrace technology, they embrace STEM. They embrace the deep learning of animals and our impact on how we can make animals better whether it’s equine or swine but see I was a burbs kid, so I did not grow up with cars and cooking, really at all my background in 4-H was with photography, with drawing, and painting with ceramics. I showed my cat. So if you do not live on a farm, there is a place for you and 4-H. And now with, you know, computer science and, and things like that. They’ve really embraced technology in 4-H. So it’s how kids can, you know, maybe have a touch with maybe their future career path. So, yeah. John Haggard 4:40 All right. So before we talk about your role at the Gallatin Parks and Recreation Department, and all the work that you do there, what do you like to do on your time off? Your hobbies, what do you like most? Mary Gauerke 4:52 Oh, I love traveling with my family. So, I was at about 17 foreign countries. Before I was 21. Yeah, my family loves to travel. And so I was very blessed to have a passport that got stamped all over the world. John Haggard 5:11 Wow. So what was the most exciting country, would you say? Mary Gauerke 5:15 Hmm, I mean, my love is definitely Germany. My family’s heritage is German. And so when I walk the street in Germany, I just feel at home. But the most exciting I think, was living as an exchange student in 4-H in Australia. And so I visited Australia, New Zealand, and, you know, learning about forestry in New South Wales was my project when I was there. And, gosh, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to go back again. And the places that I did get to visit are very, very much changed with the wildfires. So yeah, I love Australia and New Zealand for sure. John Haggard 6:02 So the one thing about you, Mary, that most people would not know and that someone would be really surprised to know about you, what would that be? Mary Gauerke 6:13 I would have to say I’m a car nut. And I didn’t realize I was a car nut until I married my husband. And I really love cars. My mom loves her. She has a Lincoln from Miracle and she just got it service there because she’s 77 she has one of those Lincoln SUVs, the fancy-schmancy ones with like air-conditioned seats and all that stuff. Anyways, so she had the tailgate up and forgot and backed out and scratched it on the garage door. And Miracle took so good care of her and getting it, you know, getting it fixed and repaired. And she was just beside herself because that was her baby and she bruised her baby. Funny. So yeah, so I guess maybe my little carnet thing was kind of apropos for the podcast. And I love old cars. I love vintage cars. John Haggard 7:18 Do you have some? Mary Gauerke 7:19 I do. I do. I had my husband ask me to marry him with a 1973 Volkswagen Squareback. John Haggard 7:26 Wow. Mary Gauerke 7:29 And Martha is in the garage as we speak. She does not get right rained on. John Haggard 7:34 Gotcha. Gotcha. So let’s talk about how did you arrive at the Gallatin Parks and Recreation Department as a marketing manager. Mary Gauerke 7:43 Well, I first started out with the city in the Economic Development Agency at City Hall. And an opportunity came about and I talked about it with the mayor before I turned in my application for the position. And she thought that I would be just an amazing fit over here and, and I, I’m very proud of the work that I get to do with Parks and Rec and I get to make an impact in the community. You know, I see where programs are going and I see who they benefit. So that is just a wonderful wonderful opportunity for me as the graphics and the marketing and the branding that I get to do I get to see who it affects. To be able to see you know, see day campers and see the older generations that are coming and working out every day in their 90s and benefiting from the wonderful place that we have here in Gallatin, which is the Civic Center. So it’s a great, great place and we’ve got some amazing parks. We’ve got more acreage and parks than I think any other city in Sumner County. John Haggard 8:54 So, I meant to ask you what brought you to the Gallatin area. Mary Gauerke 9:01 Well, I live in Hendersonville, but what brought me to Sumner County was a job. I got a job with Fruit of the Loom back in 1998. So that’s how I got down south of the Mason Dixon. John Haggard 9:15 Were they headquartered in Bowling Green? Mary Gauerke 9:19 Yes, Bowling Green Kentucky. And then, you know, I realized “Oh, well if I go a little bit south, that’s kind of like the burbs of Milwaukee.” And it just felt Hendersonville, Gallatin, and the distance from Nashville seemed to feel so much more like home than Bowling Green did. So that’s how I got down here. John Haggard 9:43 And I understand there’s a new development underway called Miracle Park. So tell us what Miracle Park is and where it’s going to be when it’s going to open who can go What is it all about? Mary Gauerke 9:55 The Miracle Park was the brainchild of our director David Brown here at Parks and Rec. I it is just a tad under six acres of ADA-compliant recreation that we are planning to take over a little corner of our Triple Creek Park. So it’s going to consist of a ball field, a pedal Park, and a playground. And this is really a place where everyone can play together. It’s an all-inclusive playground. And kids who are mobility impaired can play with typical kids or kids on the autism spectrum. We have a section called the Chill Zone. And that really is something that I was just so excited when I saw the planning for that because I have a child, a young man with autism. And I thought, “Geez, I wish we had this when he was little because he would go to the park and he would play with mulch.” There was nothing there that really interested him. And so this particular section called the Chill Zone is going to have some wonderfully bright-colored panels that are different textures and when the light hits them it will look like a kaleidoscope and it’s just a place where they can feel safe. It’s under shade that particular section so, so a little kid with that is getting a little bit maybe overwhelmed sensory wise, can go and escape to the chill zone. John Haggard 11:37 Are there other Miracle Parks around or where did David get this idea? Mary Gauerke 11:42 There are. We’ve got Miracle Parks… well, we’ve got special needs parks or mobility impaired parks popping up all over the United States. And most recently the one that I got to help with a volunteer with Was Mary’s Magical Place in Hendersonville. So this one has the three aspects to it that make it different and then other special needs parks or mobility friendly parks. So this one has the ball field, the pedal park, and the playground, not just a playground. So this is really, really exciting. The donor for the pedal park, which is the first part of the park that was underway, that is All Access Coach. All Access donated $120,000 to build that and the concrete has already been poured for that. So when weather permits, we’re going to start doing all of the other aspects that need to be done to that. The installation of the equipment, the signs, all of that. And then if you go over to Triple Creek Park this is all located when you drive in from the Main Road 31-E. It is on your left-hand side, behind the outdoor fitness facility. So you can see a sign that says “future home of the Miracle Park” right there. So we are underway. And I cannot give you a time, you know, with weather permitting, you know weather changes things. We have everything for the part the playground ordered. We’re underway with planning-wise, but I don’t have a ribbon-cutting date as of yet. John Haggard 13:39 So how is Miracle Park funded? I know you mentioned donations also, but not only now to complete what you want to have done, but also for the future. Mary Gauerke 13:49 Yes, we have written a grant and we won a grant through the state of $500,000. The city of Gallatin generously donated a matching amount of 500,000. We are in agreement to pay back with donations with fundraising. So our next fundraiser event that we have on the books is for June 20, 2020. It is the Miracle Park Golf Scramble at Long Hollow golf course. John Haggard 14:24 Is there anything that I didn’t ask you about Miracle Park or just for someone who’s listening, something they should know anything at all that we didn’t talk about? Mary Gauerke 14:35 Well, I think the emphasis of this park is that we want it inclusive, not exclusive. We want to make sure that kids that are challenged mobility, intellectually, any sort of disability will be able to play right alongside their typical friends, their typical peers. Because it’s so important in this day and age where we like to compartmentalize kids and say, Well these kids are gifted and these kids need a little help and these kids are way far behind. Well, you know, on the playground, this playground will put them all on the same level and just have fun and be a kid. John Haggard 15:24 And so what’s the best way, Mary, for people to get in touch with you if they want to learn more about Miracle Park or you know, just what’s going on at Gallatin Parks and Rec? Mary Gauerke 15:35 Yeah, they can go on our website and that is www.GallatinParksandRec.com And they can also call the Civic Center, we have many things that they could do to put their stamp on this park. They could have a monument stone on the sidewalk with their name on it or a name of a loved one, or four birthday or an anniversary. That number at the Civic Center is 615-451-5911. John Haggard 16:11 Folks, you’ve been listening to Mary Gauerke, the marketing manager for Gallatin Parks and Recreation, our special edition guest today on the Miracle Ford Podcast. The Celtic Star Podcast: A Celtic State of Mind presents its 34th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions. This week, Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by Inspiral Carpets' Clint Boon, who wrote a classic song that will forever be associated with the club’s invincible treble-winning campaign – ‘This is How it Feels’.Crafted by Clint in the late eighties, ‘This is How it Feels’ became one of Inspiral Carpets’ biggest hits upon its release in 1990. This song became a Madchester classic, and renditions have previously rang out at the city’s Old Trafford and Main Road stadiums. Now, in homage to Brendan Rodgers’ quest to lead Celtic to ten consecutive league titles in-a-row, the tune has travelled to Glasgow for a reworking by those renowned tunesmiths, The Green Brigade. But what does Clint Boon think of Celtic’s version of his melancholic slab of genius? The Oldham-born psychedelic organ-grinder joins A Celtic State of Mind to chat about ‘This is How it Feels’, Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, Noel Gallagher, Lee Mavers, Morrissey, Mark E Smith and more in Episode 34 of The Celtic Star podcast.A Celtic State of Mind has gone from strength-to-strength over the last few months, and there are many more guests lined up in the weeks ahead from the world of sport, music, film, art, broadcasting, literature and politics.Connect with A Celtic State of Mind @PaulDykes, @anorthernprose and @CelticStarPod and subscribe to the podcast via iTunes or through your podcast player.

Novelist Mark Haddon reflects on the house in Northamptonshire which was his childhood home, until the age of 12: "It was a detached, three bedroom, two storey new-build on a thin strip of reclaimed rubbish dump between the end of a red-brick terrace and the Smarts' bungalow. My father was an architect and although he didn't design the building himself it was, in its modest way, an architect's house, a couple of cuts above provincial 1960s boilerplate." This week's Essays are part of the 70th birthday celebrations of the Third Programme: the network discussed architecture from its earliest days, covering both new initiatives and historic buildings, most notably in talks by Nikolaus Pevsner.
