Visuals: https://getbehindthebillboard.com/episode-80-mary-wearEpisode #80 features copywriter extraordinaire Mary Wear.Mary wrote possibly the most important endline in the history of advertising: ‘Make Poverty History' for Comic Relief in 2004 … a line and movement that involved Richard Curtis, World Leaders and saving lives. The line was everywhere - posters, bus sides, advans, on underpants, on Bono's arm, on the side of St Paul's Cathedral and the coup de grâce, on a lectern in front of Nelson Mandela, who was chanting the words ‘Make Poverty History' to thousands gathered in Trafalgar Square. That is more than most people's entire careers and would easily have been enough to fill the episode. The way Mary tells the story of how the line came about is wonderfully humble, involving a planner and a rather talented chap called Peter Souter. But Mary is no one-trick pony. Her locker is full of great work.Starving a parking meter for TfL was a lesson in never giving up, even when the model maker had ruined the idea. What could have been a catastrophe turned into a seminal award-winning piece of work. Then there was seemingly endless more award winning work for The Economist, the Famous Grouse (a double, a small one, a quick one, a large one - they all went down well) plus an Anti-Smoking like never before. Her partnership with Damon Collins at GGT, Saatchi's and AMV was brilliant and prolific. We even had time for some Russian Vodka and flapjacks ;-)Thank you Mary for coming on and sharing some of the industry's greatest OOH work. It was a real privilege.

In the episode, "On the Polycrisis with Mark McCormack: Psychiatric Coercion, Hegel, A.I. and Saving Humanity (S5, E13),"  Mark begins with sharing his intimate experience with psychiatry and its oppressive structure. A peaceful protestor of 20 years, while on a hunger strike protesting the polycrisis, Mark describes how the institution overtook his life through forced hospitalization and a list of human rights violations. He speaks of his pressing class action lawsuit, which holds accountable the mental health care system in Canada with potential to go global.Mark also reveals his passion behind the German philosopher, G.W.F Hegel, whose work may pave the way to creatively and strategically confront  head on the polycrisis, which includes climate change, artificial intelligence, and Crispr technology, among others. With the coming AI age and possible reality collapse in our future, Mark addresses the oncoming mental health crisis or possible mass psychosis that may emerge. He believes incorporating Hegel's philosophy into A.I. research on alignment issues, may help create a benevolent AGI, which can reach the only outcome with which humans can co-exist. Hegel arrived just before modern psychiatry took a more reductionist road, and returning to his holistic and spiritual philosophy may hold the answer for our future. Mark believes in this path so whole heartedly, that he has called out for experts in their fields to unite and claim as a team the upcoming 6 Nobel prizes to legitimize the seriousness of the situation we are currently facing today existentially.Bio:Mark McCormack is a philosophy enthusiast at the University Of Alberta. He is passionate about social justice and led a group named Make Poverty History for many years. His studies have ranged across all religions and systems including the German philosopher G.W.F Hegel. After a few thousand hours studying the Science Of Logic, Mark believes there is a way to create a peaceful revolution and New World Spirit for society which would require transformation of the mental healthcare system. Having gone on a hungerstrike as part of a union initiative of Uber drivers, Mark discovered deep fissures in the system which allowed his human rights to be violated in several ways. His goal now is to make this peaceful revolution a reality to address the escalating mental health crisis arising from reality collapse as the polycrisis continues.#polycrisis #artificialintelligence #realitycollapse #mentalhealth #mentalillness #Hegelianswhowanttochangetheworld #livingphilosophy #NobelsurprizeReferences:Nobel Surprize (10 hour No Cree Council)https://youtu.be/cKEtPIryrNYFollow Mark at:Facebook: www.facebook.com/peacefulrevolution23LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mmccormack23/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@spiritpeacefulrevolution3523Please visit my website at: http://www.notascrazyasyouthink.com/Don't forget to subscribe to the Not As Crazy As You Think YouTube channel @SicilianoJenConnect:Instagram: @ jengaita LinkedIn: @ jensicilianoTwitter: @ jsiciliano

This weeks guest, Hugh Evans, is the CEO of Global Citizen. At 14, Australian-born Evans spent the night in a Manila slum. The harsh realities of his hosts' lives motivated Evans to challenge the status quo of extreme poverty. Following a trip to South Africa in 2002 as World Vision's inaugural Youth Ambassador, Evans worked on the Make Poverty History campaign and helped stage the Make Poverty History Concert (fronted by Pearl Jam and Bono). In 2011, under the mantle of the Global Poverty Project (launched 2008), Evans co-founded Global Citizen, and with it, the Global Citizen Festival -- a free, ticketed event requiring fans to perform anti-poverty actions in exchange for entry, recruiting millions into the war against global poverty. In 2015 alone, Global Citizens took 2.3 million actions, helping to secure commitments from governments around the world that are set to affect more than 210 million lives. In this episode we discuss the birth of Global Citizens, the power of education to change people's lives, How a night in the slums changed Hugh's perspective on life in addition to getting a Masterclass in Fundraising.

She has worked for the Columbans since 1990, running the media desk of the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) team of the Columban Missionary Society in Britain and editing their newsletter, Vocation for Justice. She speaks in dioceses, parishes and chaplaincies regularly on JPIC issues, particularly on the social justice teachings of Laudato Si', the 2015 papal encyclical on ‘Our Common Home'. Ellen is also an assessor for the Livesimply Parish Award in England and Wales, and supports individuals, families, parishes and educational establishments to commit to the transition to renewable energy, advocacy for justice and peacemaking. She helps to organise the annual Columban media competition for young people, which has focused on Migrants, Refugees and ‘Throwaway Society'. Ellen represented the Columbans at the 2015 United Nations Climate Talks in Paris, producing a daily blog which added to the clamour for an Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. She has been a Columban presence at numerous lobbies and marches over several decades on such issues as the Climate Crisis, Global Debt, Fair Trade, Extractive Industries, and Peace & Nonviolence. Influential events included lobbying the G8 on Debt in 1998 (Birmingham) and 1999 (Cologne) as part of the Jubilee 2000 campaign to cancel international debt, ‘Make Poverty History' in Edinburgh in 2005 and ‘The Wave' on Climate in London in 2009. She is a member of the NJPN Environment Group and is on the planning group for their July 2021 Conference: ‘Action for Life on Earth', which is inspired by Laudato Si'. Interest in environmental justice was sparked while working as a volunteer teacher in Northern Nigeria in the 1980s and then for CAFOD as their campaign coordinator on the ‘Renewing the Earth' campaign 1989-1990, which did ground-breaking work on the links between development and the environment. Columban eco-theologian Sean McDonagh was a consultant to that campaign and she has been inspired by his work on Creation Theology ever since. She has produced several study programmes for Christian groups, including, ‘Paint the Church Green', ‘Our Earth, Our Home' – Green assemblies for primary schools, and the Columban study programme on Laudato Si'.

Hugh Evans is an Australian humanitarian, co-founder of both The Oaktree Foundation and Global Citizen, a Global Poverty Project.  At age 14, Evans spent the night in a Manila slum. The harsh realities of his hosts’ lives motivated Evans to challenge the status quo of extreme poverty. Following a trip to South Africa in 2002 as World Vision's inaugural Youth Ambassador, Evans worked on the Make Poverty History campaign and helped stage the Make Poverty History Concert (fronted by Pearl Jam and Bono). Hugh Evans was the youngest person ever to be named Australian of the Year and now head of  'The Oaktree Foundation' and 'The Global Poverty Project,' a major charity to end the suffering caused by poverty which includes the Global Citizen initiatives. Focused on ending global poverty by moving the masses with music and action, Evans left Down Under to set the stage for a world devoid of unnecessary suffering caused by preventable inequality, indigence, hunger and disease. Ten years ago, the UK-government-led Commission for Africa was launched at the British Museum. It coincided with a popular global movement to Make Poverty History in Africa, a revival of Live Aid concerts, and a string of promises from G8 leaders to increase aid to Africa. The Commission encouraged partnership between Africa and the developed world, rather than a relationship of dependency. Is this happening? A decade on, how relevant or necessary is development aid? Is Africa now in a position to be an agent of its own progress? (Photo: A labourer walks along a metro-line under construction in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa. Credit: Reuters)

Australia’s aid program has increased massively over the last decade, but its future is unclear, and aid policy has become controversial. The Labor Government has repeatedly delayed its target to lift aid 0.5 per cent of Gross National Income (GNI), and just this month slashed $900 million from the forward estimates for aid. The Coalition has not put any date to achievement of 0.5. There are also major aid policy and effectiveness issues at play, including aid for asylum seekers, aid to PNG, and aid to Africa. Labor has introduced a number of aid reforms, but the Coalition has called for “an increased focus on accountability, transparency and a reassessment of priorities within the aid program” (Julie Bishop at ANU, June 2012). The Greens support a lot more aid, and want an independent evaluator for the sector. In this special 2013 Election forum, the ACT candidates discussed their parties’ approaches to aid. Speakers at the event were: - Dr Helen Szoke, Chief Executive Officer, Oxfam Australia; - Professor Stephen Howes, Director, Development Policy Centre, Crawford School of Public Policy, ANU; - The Hon Dr Andrew Leigh, Member for Fraser, ALP; - Elizabeth Lee, Liberal candidate for Fraser; - Julie Melrose, Greens candidate for Canberra. Presentation slides are available from the Devpolicy events page: https://devpolicy.crawford.anu.edu.au/event-extra/past This event was sponsored by the Development Policy Centre and Oxfam ACT, with the support of Oaktree and Make Poverty History.

The London launch of the “Enough Food for Everyone… IF” campaign was held at Somerset House on the evening of 23rd January 2013. The campaign, focussed on ending global hunger, is the first time since Make Poverty History that the international development community has joined together to mobilise people for change. The launch, presented by Lauren Laverne, saw a stunning 3D projection onto Somerset House. A host of famous faces added their support to the campaign, including Bill Nighy, Bill Gates and Angelique Kidjo. In this podcast, Christian Aid's Antoinette Powell catches up with some of the people who came along for the event. The overwhelming feeling surrounding the launch was one of optimism. Although the odds sometimes seem against us, we can end global hunger IF we choose to care and IF we all join together to take action. IF this happens, 2013 will be the year global hunger becomes part of our history, not our present. As Bill Nighy said in his speech “We are electing not to forget. We are choosing to care.”
