Renaissance English History Podcast: A Show About the Tudors
There were two Elizabeth Brookes at the Tudor court—and they've been confusing historians ever since. One was the estranged wife of the poet Thomas Wyatt, accused of adultery and rumored to have caught Henry VIII's attention. The other was her niece, the Marchioness of Northampton, who was nearly queen-like under Edward VI, fell from favor under Mary I, and became one of Elizabeth I's closest courtiers. In this episode, we untangle their stories, clear up the confusion, and explore how two women with the same name found themselves at the center of love affairs, political power plays, and court gossip in Tudor England.Reserve your 2026 copy of the Tudor Planner here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/publishing-the-2026-tudor-planner/x/176575#/ Hosted on Acast. In this first episode of Series Eight of The Family Histories Podcast, host Andrew Martin meets author, family historian, and the host of the Italian Roots and Genealogy YouTube series and podcast - Bob Sorrentino, and finds out about his Italian-American roots, and his connections to Italian and the wider European nobility.THE LIFE STORY - ISABELLA D'ESTE We're off to the 15th Century to hear about one of Bob's ancestors - Isabella d'Este (born 1474 in Ferrara, Italy) was the wife of Francesco II Gonzaga - the Marquis of Mantua, Italy, and whilst her husband appeared to prefer going off to fight as a mercenary, Isabella found herself left in charge. Under her influence, she encouraged culture and art, and became one of the leading women in the Italian Renaissance. She also ensured that women could access education, and she herself is known to have amassed a collection of around 20,000 letters. She died in her 60's in 1539, and no doubt left an important legacy for both Italy and women.THE BRICK WALL - MARIA ANGELA DE RISO We're only stepping back to the 18th Century this time for Bob's brick wall, and this is his 4x Great Grandmother - Maria Angela De Riso. He knows that she was born circa 1750, likely in Carpinone, in western Molise, Italy, but her origins, and the identity of her parents remains unknown.Maria was an Italian Baroness by birth, but Bob cannot find information on the generation further back - did her parents buy their land and titles?Who were Maria's parents?Where did they come from before Maria's birth? If you think you can help Bob crack this brick wall with a clue or research idea, then you can contact him at his Facebook Group - Italian Roots and Genealogy, his YouTube channel, or alternatively, you can send us a message via our contact form, and we'll pass it along to him.In the meantime, while Bob is curious of Andrew's offer of help, will he get to his answer safely...- - - Episode CreditsAndrew Martin - Host and ProducerBob Sorrentino - GuestJohn Spike - Sándor PetőfiThank you for listening! Remember earlier this year, when people thought Kate Middleton was dead and or replaced by AI? What was up with that? We're joined by Ellie Hall, a journalist with a focus on the British Royal Family, to trace the whole story behind #WhereIsKate—including a look at the interesting way that the Royal Family handles its press, the origins of all the conspiracy theories surrounding Kate, and who is/why did we ever need to care about the Marchioness of Cholmondeley? Our guest Ellie Hall is a reporter and Royal Family expert. You can find her (and her sweet golden retriever) everywhere @ellievhall. Want even more Panic World content? This week Amanda and Wade are joined by their good friend Devan to discuss the virtues of an obscure-ish Disney film that contains brilliant performances from Jodie Foster, David Niven and more. The three nerd out over the fact that the Marchioness and her butler secretly love doing improv bits with each other, and talk about the amazing villain duo of Leo McKern and Vivian Pickles. Go watch the movie, get the music stuck in your head, and enjoy this discussion with the incomparable Devan! In this episode we will look at one of English literature's greatest names, the Romantic Poet, Lord Byron. It is claimed outside of the U.K. he is the second most read British author behind Shakespeare. We first mentioned Byron in our second episode, Science Fiction Satan, where we quoted contemporary poet Robert Southey who dubbed Byron and his good friend Percy Shelley as ‘The Satanic School'. Southey claimed their work was, ‘characterised by a Satanic spirit of pride and audacious impiety.'Add to Southey's glowing endorsement, there is of course the more famous quote about Byron from Lady Caroline Lamb who called him, ‘Mad, bad and dangerous to know.'Then there's his work, poems and plays about the apocalypse, angels of death, vampires, defying the gods, a tribute to Dante's inferno, Lucifer and St Peter litigating over a King of England at the very gates of Heaven, an ode to Napoleon, likening him to our favourite disrupter, the witch of Endor from first Samuel, the devil's drive or the story of Cain told from the point of view of murderous Cain himself. After all of that, how could I resist doing an episode about this man? There are cameo guest appearances by The Young and the Restless, Forrest Gump, Joel Olsteen, Alexander the Great, William the Conqueror, John ‘Foul Weather Jack' Byron, Don Juan, Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, John ‘Captain Mad Jack' Byron, Marchioness of Carmarthen, Amelia Osborne, Catherine Gordon, George Gordon Byron, William Chaworth, Harrow Vs Eton Cricket match, Trinity College at Cambridge, William Fletcher, Hellespont, Greece, Dardanelles, Swimming World Magazine, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Clara Claremont, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Switzerland, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, Elvis, John Polidore, The Vampire, Bram Stoker, Dracula, John Milton, Darth Vader, Wolverine, The Phantom of the Opera, Venice, Ottomans, Thomas Moore, #SketchComedy #Sketch #Comedy #Sketch Comedy #Atheist #Science #History #Atheism #ConspiracyTheory #Sceptical #Scepticism #Mythology #Religion #Devil #Satan #Skeptic #Debunk #poetry
One of the most powerful and influential women at the court of Henry VIII is someone you've probably never heard of, or perhaps only heard of fleetingly - Gertrude Courtenay, Marchioness of Exeter. As the wife of Henry VIII's cousin, Henry Courtenay, Gertrude was a central figure at King Henry's court, and would find herself on the wrong side of the law a couple of times, but most prominently when she became embroiled in a period known as the Exeter conspiracy, which would eventually lead to her husband's execution and her and her sons imprisonment. To discuss this fascinating figure with me today, I am pleased to welcome historian and author Sylvia Barbara Soberton onto the podcast. Sylvia Barbara's book “The forgotten Tudor women - Gertrude Courtenay, wife and mother of the last Plantagenets” is the basis for our discussion today.

Does anyone else have a strong sense of déjà vu? Because it appears it's that time of year again: When the Tories decide to ditch their useless leader. Yep, because as Sunak continues to take his taxpayer-funded chopper on tour to tell us all that his plan that clearly isn't working is working, in other corners of the Tory party, the penny is dropping... Penny Mordaunt to be precise. The ladies discuss the rumour mill of letters of no confidence going in, election dates, and revisit Penny Mordaunt's brief time as Liz Truss cheerleader and defender - "I think the Right Honourable Gentleman will find, she is absolutely not hiding under a desk".Then it's onto extremism, as Michael Gove announces Govt's new definition of this, but fails to mention that if you donate £10million to The Tory party, or indeed £15million then you can indulge in all the extremism you like and still have a massive hold on the party of Government. Christian forgiveness and all that... And Speaker of the House, Sir Lindsay Hoyle also gets a little mention for failing to see Diane Abott bobbing up and down at PMQs like a busted Jack in the Box. The Kate-Gate saga shows no signs of stopping, so Marina and Jemma dive straight in and touch upon some rather intriguing reporting from The Independent on a certain Marchioness of Cholmondley, plus the latest sighting of Kate (?) at her local garden centre. Then it's a Kate-inspired pudding to finish, from the genius Munya Chawawa.Thank you for sharing and do tweet us @MarinaPurkiss @jemmaforte @TheTrawlPodcastPatreonhttps://patreon.com/TheTrawlPodcastYoutubehttps://www.youtube.com/@TheTrawlTwitterhttps://twitter.com/TheTrawlPodcast

20 sierpnia 1989 roku w Londynie pogłębiarka Bowbelle zderzyła się ze statkiem wycieczkowym Marchioness. Stu pięćdziesięciu imprezowiczów wpadło do lodowatej Tamizy. In 1989, 130 people boarded small pleasure boat, Marchioness, for a party cruise down the Thames. Less than an hour later, 51 of these people would die after the boat was struck by a large dredger. 34 years on, and still there's not been justice for the victims, survivors or families of this disaster. Who was responsible?

Lawrence Dallaglio is an English sporting icon who understands the power of being driven by a higher purpose. He won 85 international rugby caps and was a crucial player in England's World Cup triumph of 2003. But Dallaglio is not cut from typical rugby playing cloth. It was the tragedy of losing his older sister in the Marchioness boating disaster of 1989 that ended up propelling him to pursue a rugby career. I am grateful to Lawrence for being open and vulnerable about his life and struggles, including the tragedy of losing his sister and the profound impact that had on him, while also sharing some gems around what it takes to win sports biggest prizes. We've reached the point where the political pendulum has at last swung the Conservative way, giving it a working parliamentary majority for the first time in three decades. Despite all his efforts to get that majority in 1874, Disraeli seems to have been surprised by the extent of his success. He took power without a properly worked-out set of policies to apply. In particular, since he was more interested in foreign affairs, he had little in place in the way of a domestic programme. For that he would depend on his ministers, so getting their selection right was a major task. One of the most difficult nuts to crack would be getting Salisbury into his government, if only to stop him sniping from outside. This he pulled off in part thanks to the intervention of the Countess of Derby, though her relationships with Salisbury and other leading figures in the story is worthy of a soap opera. The absence of a good domestic programme left a space open into which the Archbishop of Canterbury was able to insert a nasty piece of Church legislation, in the course of the last ever parliamentary session that would be overwhelmingly devoted to a religious matter. That was in strange contrast with the instincts of Disraeli's government which, despite being Conservative, were strangely progressive socially. Apart from that, they will be part of Camilla's team at official engagements but will not be included in replying to letters or day-to-day planning. Moreover, they won't receive a salary but their expenses will be covered. Replacing the role of lady-in-waiting will end a feature of court life going back to the middle ages, with such close personal helpers of a Queen often coming from aristocratic families and, over the centuries, sometimes caught up in court intrigue, a BBC report cited. The Amazons - A Farcical Romance by Arthur W Pinero audiobook. This 1895 farce inspired by the outlandish idea of women wearing pants, centers around the predicament of the three daughters of the eccentric Marchioness of Castlejordan, who determined to have sons, raised them like boys. She encouraged them to dress and act like boys at home, yet dress like ladies when out. As the girls come of age, they are conflicted. They want to please mother by acting as her sons, but, suddenly smitten with three gentlemen, they are compelled to grow up and be ladies. When their suitors secretly come to woo, they aren't sure what to do……and what will mother do if she finds out?
Episode Description: On this exciting episode of Duchess, Emma meets the custodian of one of Britain's greatest stately homes: The Marchioness Townshend of Raynham Hall. In this episode, we learn about the fascinating story of how the city of Sydney was named after a Townshend. The Duchess hears how Lord ‘Turnip' Townshend ushered in an agricultural revolution at Raynham, and we are given the full story behind the world's best known ghost photograph! Top Quotes: “You can not dictate the future of a home. All you can do is love it and look after it now.” - Lady Townshend “Traditionally, these houses would have had recitals for every group of people that they had visiting. Music is in the DNA of grand homes.” - The Duchess of Rutland About the Guest and Stately Home: Raynham Hall is a country house located in the glorious countryside of Norfolk. For nearly 400 years it has been the seat of the Townshend family. Born Alison Combs, Lady Townshend is the current custodian of Raynham with her husband Charles Townshend, 8th Marquess Townshend. The couple share four children. Lady Townshend was the editor of The North Norfolk Informer which she co-founded. Work started on Raynham Hall in 1619 commissioned by Sir Roger Townshend and is considered "one of the outstanding country houses of the period.“ Architecturally, Raynham is a neo-classical house and features a particularly striking marble hall - where classical concerts are held. Raynham Hall is the site for perhaps the most famous ghost of all time, taken by photographers for Country Life - the photo of the famous ‘Brown Lady' descending the staircase. About the Host: Emma Rutland, The Duchess of Rutland, did not always stride the halls of stately homes. Born Emma Watkins, the Duchess grew up the daughter of a Quaker farmer, in the Welsh marsh countryside. She trained as an opera singer in the Guildhall School of Music, and worked as a successful interior designer before meeting her future husband David Manners, the 11th Duke of Rutland, at a dinner party. Their marriage in 1992 would transform Emma Watkins into the 11th Duchess of Rutland, thrusting her into the world of aristocracy, and handing her the responsibility of one of the nation's great treasures: Belvoir Castle. While simultaneously running the day to day operations of the castle, and raising five children, The Duchess became fascinated with the history and importance of the other stately homes of the UK. Join The Duchess as she embarks on a wonderful journey through time, to learn more about the incredible homes that have defined Great Britain and, most importantly, meet the other extraordinary women who work tirelessly behind their doors to preserve their history and magic for future generations. Category Is: Regency in shades of avocado, mulberry and ochre Answer: “The Golden Songbird” by Sheila Walsh Question: What is the wager calling everyone's bluff until she ends up a Marchioness after some gun play, a cock fight, and a really bad trip? This week, Morgan and Isabeau are joined by a Dark Passenger for their “Category Is” series, discussing a not-plagiarizing-Georgette-Heyer Regency from 1975. Are the seventies the True Sixties? Was Woodiwiss even a radical? Are disco balls just big mirrors? Cards on the table, we're all in.
This chapter tells how Paco changes sides dragged by the unavoidable force of his heart, while the Marchioness of Ripipí gives explanations of his son's life to the journalist Aría Canciño.

More of this interview appears in the July issue of Scottish Field, which is in shops now. And later, Simon Welfare discusses his new book Fortune's Many Houses, a unique and fascinating look at Victorian society through the remarkable lives of an enlightened and philanthropic aristocratic couple, the Marquess and Marchioness of Aberdeen. In this new episode of the Museum of Femininity we will explore the life of another female art collector, who was also an eminent political leader in Renaissance Italy.Isabella d'Este (1474-1539) was the Marchioness of Mantua, who collected a variety of Ancient sculptures, medals and artefacts which she displayed in her Studiolo. Along with collecting classical works of art she also commissioned various paintings by the most notable Old Masters of the age including Leonardo da Vinci, Perugino, Mantegna and Titian. She was a forceful character who kept meticulous records and sent hundreds of letters with detailed instructions about how her studio was to be constructed, displaying a firmness but also the ability to persuade with flattery and charm. As well as her formidable connoisseurship she showed immense political prowess and often stepped into the role of leader during times of war.Sources https://isabelladeste.web.unc.edu/profile-of-isabella-deste/http://www.italianrenaissanceresources.com/units/unit-8/essays/isabella-deste-collects/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdkbLv8vgYQ
You are cordially invited to the wedding of the year.... Sophie Breeze is a brilliant bridesmaid. So brilliant, in fact, that she's made it her full-time job. As a professional bridesmaid, Sophie is hired by brides to be their right-hand woman, posing as a friend but working behind the scenes to ensure their big day goes off without a hitch. From wrangling rowdy hen dos to navigating last minute portaloo cancellations and family dramas, there's no problem she can't solve. So when she's hired by an actual Marchioness to help plan the society wedding of the year, it should be a chance for Sophie to prove just how talented she is. Of course, it's not ideal that the bride, Cordelia Swann, is an absolute diva and determined to make Sophie's life a nightmare. It's also a bit inconvenient that Sophie finds herself drawn to Cordelia's posh older brother, who is absolutely off limits. And when a rival society wedding is announced, things start to get rather complicated.... Can Sophie pull off the biggest challenge of her career, win over a reluctant bride and catch the eye of handsome Lord Swann - all while keeping her true identity a secret, and her dignity intact? Heartwarming and hilarious, The Secret Bridesmaid celebrates the joys (and foibles) of weddings, the nuances of female friendship and the redeeming power of love in its many, unexpected forms.

This week I'm covering the most infamous political family in the United States, the Kennedys. The glamour and east coast style belie a tragic history. But is there something in astrology that explains the untimely deaths, political ambitions and affinity for cable knit sweaters? (Ok, there might not be an explanation for the sweaters, they're just cozy!?) This first episode in the series explains the origins of the famous family and the losses that led them to the White House. Its a little bit Virgo, a little bit eight house and a whole lot of intrigue. Police violence is unacceptable. As a Rugby World Cup winner with England, Lawrence is one of the sport's most decorated characters. His story is a colourful one, and his early years were shaped to a large extent by the tragic loss of his sister Francesca in the Marchioness river boat disaster on the Thames. It became his driving force, and the source of much pride to him, to honour her memory with his performances on the pitch. A fiercely proud family man and patriot who used emotion and passion to fuel his rugby like few others, Lawrence enjoyed enormous success on the field with Wasps, England and the British and Irish Lions. He also encountered the darker side of a high profile, in a newspaper sting that resulted in the loss of the England captaincy. ......................................... This week, Alec and Val use their gift of foresight (or maybe hindsight) to partially spoil some clues from Season 2 Episode 7, The Marchioness. Sherlock's brother is back! And we get to meet his ex-fiancee... Yes, that ex-fiancee. She went on to marry a Marquis Byell, and she got a divorce horse for her troubles. Time to take one bite of risotto and then spend the whole episode acting awkward about adults doing normal adult things! Ushering in 2021, the hosts reflect on recent events in America. Theo kicks off the episode with the Marchioness Disaster. Designed as a pleasure boat, the Marchioness was hired for a birthday party in 1989. However, the night doesn't go according to plan as tragedy strikes. Moving over to America, Rachael goes to Ohio 1976 when a rash of poison pen letters start to make the rounds. Accusing people of various crimes, the letters are mainly directed at Mary Gillispie. Things just get weirder from there. As always, the episode ends with a dumb criminal. If you like Spree, please consider giving a 5 star review and follow us on social media. The stars and stripes have been fluttering all week on the streets of Ballina -- the town of just 10,000 in the west of Ireland where US president-elect Joe Biden's Irish ancestors hail from.Ten of the former vice president's 16 great-great-grandparents were born in Ireland, according to the Irish for Biden campaign, with Edward Blewitt, Biden's great-great-great-grandfather, providing the Ballina connection. On Saturday, as CNN projected Biden's White House win, Ballina residents came out to celebrate their distant kin's success."I think Ballina has saved the world tonight, because without Ballina, there would be no Joe Biden," Smiler Mitchell, a local publican, told CNN.Balloons were tied to cars and the crowd sang "The Green and Red of Mayo," a famous ballad about the county where Ballina is situated. One car with a cardboard cut out of Biden in the front seat had a license plate which read, "PENNSYLVANIA BIDEN #1."In the lead-up to the election, the community held a "Ridin' for Biden" event around the bridges crossing the River Moy with a carousel of cars passing the town's iconic cathedral and finishing in front of a mural of the man himself, erected in the town's main square."Ballina has always been an underdog town in the west of Ireland, which has had its own challenges in the past," said local politician Mark Duffy."Now we think it's our time to shine and put our best foot forward. We look forward to welcoming as many visitors from across the US and across the political divide."He noted that the town is in a beautiful part of the world, with lakes, mountains and urban forest in the surrounding area.Biden still has distant relatives in the town.Joe Blewitt, a third cousin, who has met the president-elect several times, said his namesake "is totally down to earth.""He's a family man," Blewitt told CNN by phone. But Ballina isn't the only Irish town with a Biden connection. On the opposite side of the country -- in Carlingford, County Louth -- a community pipe band was set to premiere an anthem for Biden at noon on Sunday.Biden's great-grandfather James Finnegan arrived in New York on the Marchioness of Bute ship in 1850 from Carlingford, a coastal town located about 70 miles north of Dublin. In honor of their most famous son's election win, Carlingford's local parish priest planned to ring the bells of the church with school children and members of the community in attendance.Paul Allen, the lead organizer of the Irish for Biden campaign, told CNN the town was overjoyed with the result."Joe Biden is a quintessential Irish American and it shows what a combination of hard work and determination can do," he said. The campaign had encouraged Irish people all over the world to phone a relative in America and ask them to vote for Biden."The nurse working in Chicago, the firefighter in Boston or the policeman in New York, the construction worker building America; that's the Irish American connection," Allen added. The Carlingford community hosted Biden in 2016 and in advance of his visit, he wrote a letter which said: "Northeast Pennsylvania will be written on my heart. But Ireland will be written on my soul."Ireland's Taoiseach, or prime minister, Micheál Martin was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Biden on his victory Saturday.Back over in Ballina, more celebrations were expected on Sunday. The town, twinned with Scranton, Pennsylvania, is also home to Ireland's first woman president, Mary Robinson, who was elected 30 years ago to the day on Saturday."Her message was one of hope and a light in the window for the diaspora," said politician Mark Duffy. "...30 years later to the day, one of the descendants of our diaspora, who would have left Ballina in such a dark and bleak time for Irish history, has gone on to hold the highest office in the land."text by Eoin McSweeney, CNN
It was just supposed a late-night birthday party on the Thames - a little drinking, a little dancing, and a lot of fun with all their friends. But in the early morning hours of August 20th, 1989, the 131 people onboard the pleasure boat Marchioness found themselves at the mercy of a ship three times her size.

Chris Stagg presents Words & Sound, the arts and culture podcast on Phoenix FM. In episode 3 of Words & Sound, my special guest is the Artistic Director of The Chelmsford Ballet Company; Annette Potter. Annette joins me with dancers Bella, Harriet, Alycia and Samantha and we talk all about the Ballet company, their performances and opportunities for involvement and I even get a ballet lesson from Annette herself! All music played in this episode has been specially selected by my guests Links mentioned in this episode: The Chelmsford Ballet Compnay Website: https://www.thechelmsfordballetcompany.co.uk// Twitter: @ballet_CBC Songs played in this episode: Chosen by Bella - Say Nothing - Naomi Scott Chosen by Samantha - Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield Chosen by Alycia - We Are The Champions - Queen Chosen by Annette - Let Me Entertain You - Robbie Williams Chosen by Harriet - Summer Days - Martin Garrix History of The Chelmsford Ballet Company. In 1947, Joan Weston created the Broomfield YMCA Ballet Company in order to give the more senior students at her existing dance school the opportunity to learn and perform to the public. It was after their 1949 performance of Coppélia at the Shire Hall that the then Mayor of Chelmsford suggested the name ‘The Chelmsford Ballet Company’, and with a small committee the Company was born. Since 1949, the Company has staged a full-scale production every year. Initially a part of the Arts Festival, and then the Cathedral Fringe Festival, they occur today as an annual event in their own right. Today the company is led by Artistic Director Annette Potter, a former dancing member. Annette danced many leading roles with the Company before moving on to teaching and choreography. The company’s patrons are Doreen Wells, Marchioness of Londonderry and Christopher Marney, Artistic Director of Ballet Central. The Company is a way for skilled dancers to perform together and to showcase their talents, but it is not affiliated with any one dance school. It has become a well- loved cornerstone of Chelmsford’s cultural calendar, and repertoire includes The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Napoli, Pineapple Poll, Petroushka, La Boutique Fantasque, La Fille Mal Gardée, Tales from Beatrix Potter, Les Sylphides, Coppélia and Cinderella. IMPORTANT: Covid 19 update: Please Note that with regret, following government advice, Chelmsford City Council have taken the action to close all Chelmsford City Theatres with immediate effect and so the upcoming performances of Tales of Beatrix Potter have been cancelled and postponed. The Chelmsford Ballet Company committee will meet at the next possible opportunity to discuss the way forward. Toward the end of Episode 64, Tira, Bash, and Peter were dining in the great mead hall of Beorhtmedu with the Marchioness when they heard singing coming from outside. This special episode shares the contents of that song, which Rhett has patterned after the style of Old English poetry. The format may be a bit odd for most of us, since this style relies more on repeated initial sounds instead of shared ending sounds, but we hope you'll enjoy it nonetheless. Here's the text in a standalone format for easy reference: The Song of the Witani Lo! May we, the many-numbered approach the all-giving mother of our kin, the open-handed, giver of bright gifts of gold to the brave and bold warriors of the wind-swept plains. Of old our horses roamed to the rising-home, the sun’s sweet hall where Dawn drinks deep of day to come. Of old our horses strode to the setting-home, where the wings of night press in upon the pale. Of old our horses made us master of all between, and lords of a land that sprang with sweetest gifts. Once our will ran right and true,a single sense that burned bright— three threads today that once were one— we, the Witani, knew defeat as does the east the west. No foe might fight us and win; in the great grass lands, where horse-bands' blade fell fiercely on those who tried to take from us. Many woeful learned to wail, sad for all the empty seats in their halls of honor when our warriors rode: Glory-filled days gone with the whisper of the wind. Then came the crows, feasting with raven featherson us, talons tearing us brother from brother, rending and riving and driving deep the cracks that cut our folk far from love for itself. May gods give grace to heal the hurts that have torn us, tell us how we might mend and not needlessly drive hatred deeper. For now, fair gods, our need is nearer than ever, as dark hosts stand at our door, their swords swift and sure. Our gift-giver, the Fair Lady who sits in the honey-sweet hall, leads us to light, makes haven for the hungryand helps the helpless with a wall in the wasteland, a firm friend with all-shielding arms. Her hands hold no gold but let it freely flow to those who love the land that remains ours by right. Yet up climbs the cost as days drag on to months. Too many horses run home with no warrior holding high the blooded blade and battered shield. They lie in the long hills made by man’s hands, cold arms crossed below the blood-soaked earth. And still the slaughter makes its way to whereboth hearth and heart once dwelt. Here, we wail for them. But bold horse-bands still ride and bite the black-clad foe, guiding them with wounds too great to seek softer lands. In this great work the will of our Lady leads, for of herself she helps— her own child, strong and steady, rides to rid the land of the fearsome foe. How can we lose heart when so many work for our good? Time fails us to tell of storied names and steeds Who work as one in sun’s harsh heat, or moon’s glow, in grey of winter’s snow or spring’s sky-tears.Of Ecgferth, Ealdraed’s son, or Totholt the life-taker our songs once sang, and still will, should gods’ smiles stay on us. While they ride forth for us, our heads may rest under roofs where careless dreams come. Our songs and words to gods hasten their feet. But though the tide of Witan care creeps high, new hope hastens to us, unseen by all but the wisest ones we have. For do our songs not say that from the sun may sail hope from on high? And lo, again, may we know our hope anew, for on this day, when dread has seemed as black as it could be,a wondrous sight, when from the gathered gloom five friends came from a ship that sails the clouds. Without a sea, this water-horse has led the light to bring to bold Beorhtmedu a way to wage new war. The first is full of craft, wise Esymires, whose wingéd steed sails the sky. He led to Stedingas the band. Then comes Radiance of the sun, a worthy warrior blessed with the aura of Ardan. Her arm shall awe the darkness. Bold Peter walks worthily in the name of life and light, a land-living one who walks with Vasham. A doughty dwarf with axes keen and cruel is Tira, eldest daughter of the earth. A fool is he who raises her wrath. And last but not the least, wild Wamberbash, who wears the smell of snarling beasts as most might wear a skin. These all have sailed swiftly from the morning’s meadows, leaving the heated halls of the rising red sun to bring to truth the words that fill sorrowful souls with fire and flame rekindled to scorch and slay those who would claim our lives and lands. So sing we now, and shall sing, Witani all! ----- We used an excellent Battlebards music track. If you like what you hear, check them out at battlebards.com. There can hardly be a greater London Legacy than that of saving lives of Londoners every day on the River Thames. For centuries the Thames has been the iconic lifeblood of our glorious city. But there is also a darker side to this ancient tidal river. This is the calling and passion of many supremely dedicated men and women who work for the amazing Royal National Lifeboat Institution or RNLI. Chiswick RNLI lifeboat station is one of four on the Thames and is the second busiest in the UK and Ireland. Since its launch in 2002, Chiswick has attended over 3500 incidents and rescued over 1730 people. Unlike other stations, Chiswick operates around the clock crew, ready to launch within 90 seconds. Full time crew work alongside volunteers from all sections of society, who all give up their time to help save lives on the Thames. This is the story of Mark Turrell and James Anthony who have dedicated their lives for very good personal reasons to the RNLI.“The Lifeboats were put on the Thames due to one incident back in 1989 – which was the collision between the Marchioness and the Bowbelle.” 4:00 The Thames didn’t have a dedicated rescue service until 1989 after a dredger, the Bowbelle collided with a party boat named the Marchioness, taking 50 lives as the boat sank in about 30 seconds. It stands as one of the greatest tragedies the river and city has ever seen. There was no investigation, and the victims’ families had to press charges and prosecute—although no one individual was ever found to be at fault. But after the disaster it became clear that a service was needed to standby on the Thames and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was born. 7:50 The RNLI has 9 full time staff members and more volunteers that standby. Around the coast the RNLI is solely volunteer base, but with traffic and London’s busy nature—you’d never make it to the boat in time to make a difference. They run a tight 90 second deadline to respond and hit the water—every station has this so that they can overlap and be on scene in 15 minutes or under. “I’ve slept in this room more than my own bedroom the last two years.'' 17:00 Mark and James have seen everything on the Thames. They respond to hundreds of calls a year that range in seriousness from loss of life—to company directors naked and stranded from being dared to swim across the river. The Thames is a serious body of water that takes 8 hours for the tide to go out, but only 4 for it to rush back in.As such, the RNLI is a highly trained group with a very serious position in keeping Londoner’s safe with the river that has been the lifeblood of the city for centuries. Thankfully the volunteers and staff get assistance for the gravest of incidents, and the full time staff make sure that the volunteers are ready before exposing them to the more extreme cases of rescue, and sadly, recovery as well. Marks on reasons for joining the service are quite personal, as are many others, and the crew do their job with the upmost respect for those on the river—whether that’s a bunch of party goers on swan floats and a bouncy castle floating the wrong way, dogs washed away with the current, and all matter of accidents and dangers. You can follow the RNLI and the amazing work they do at their website Twitter and Facebook pages. Mark also successfully crowdfunded to start a program teaching how to gives dogs CPR, something he just put into practice saving his own dog’s life. Mark and James were kind enough to take me out on the river, and although the recording was too muffled to use, I can attest to their skill and professionalism from seeing it firsthand, and I can’t encourage you enough to support them as they continue to protect London and its waters. 'Winners & Losers' looks at the how the Great Famine came to an end. It's set to the backdrop of a News Year's Eve Ball held in Kilkenny Castle on December 31st 1850. The castle was home to the Marquis & Marchioness of Ormonde, who had invited what was considered the elite of Kilkenny to the ball. However behind the finery and wealth on display we will see how the Great Famine continued to affect life in Ireland into the 1850s. From guests at the ball to the impoverished weavers of Kilkenny, it would be several years before the Great Hunger truly came to an end.Support the podcast www.patreon.com/IrishpodcastTwitter @irishhistoryInsta @irishhistory See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We’re starting off with something a little more serious this week: news broke of Jeffrey Epstein’s death as Prince Andrew and Fergie joined the Queen and Prince Philip in Balmoral. Oh, to be a bat on the wall at that dinner table… We’re also talking about Prince Harry’s latest crime — pedicures — while Meghan Markle gears up to go all trout on her summer holiday in Scotland. Elsewhere, Kate Middleton and Prince William battle it out in a yacht race, cheered on by Prince George, the pirate king, and Princess Charlotte, who has a new signature move. Finally, we’ve got an update on the Turnip Toffs’ “code of omertà” over the rumoured affair between Will and Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley.
It’s not all roses for the Cambridges — as the Marchioness of Cholmondeley is named one of the most “socially powerful” people in the UK, we go on the ground at her Norfolk home, Houghton Hall, to find out how deep the Cholmondeleys’ royal connection goes. Prince William and Kate Middleton continue to dispel the affair rumours on an idyllic family holiday, and make a bizarre statement about Kate’s alleged ‘baby Botox’. We’ve got new birthday portraits of Prince George, who has been working his magic with a society of wizards, while Prince Harry demonstrates a chimp greeting and charms the children of Sheffield. In Windsor, meanwhile, an “overprotective” palace official releases a list of dos and don’ts for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s neighbours, and we discuss what the Queen is allegedly gifting Meghan for her upcoming birthday.
A whopper of an episode as we all long for the days when these things were 30 minutes long. Well, sorry nostalgia, because we have shit to discuss. For starters: What's going on with Wendy Williams? Colton Haynes? Nico Tortorella's memoir? Emrata's husband's unpaid rent? (Plus, a game Bobby has named "Rata or Nata?") Tori Spelling's new mommydrama, Nic Cage's upcoming annulment, Isabella Cruise's new role in the world of Scientology, why England is riled up about a woman named Cholmondeleys (pronounced "Chumley"), and how Lil Nas X got kicked off the country charts (and why that's fucked up!) Plus, Rita got asked out by a Eurovision star? Of course she did. As always, call in at 619.WHO.THEM with your questions and comments, don't forget to support us on Patréon for a jam-packed weekly newsletter and fortnightly bonus episodes—and come see us LIVE! in Nashville, Boston & DC.
If you thought that the idea for the Metropolitan Police originated with Sir Robert Peel, you’d be wrong. If you thought the Met Police have never been armed, you’d be wrong again. In this fascinating episode I met up with Robert Jeffries—Curator of the Thames Police Museum in Wapping. Robert is not only an expert on all things pertaining to the Thames River Police, he is also a consummate storyteller. Recorded at the original and spiritual home of modern-day policing, Robert recounts the wealth and violence that permeated the River Thames and surrounding areas back in 1798, and how the Thames River Police have, over the years, been a leading and integral part of preventive policing and heroically saving lives ever since. This is Your London Legacy. “You could literally walk across the river on the decks of all these ships vying for space to unload their cargoes. There were never less than 1,000 ships in the port of London.” [8:50] Robert starts our journey back through time at the start of the Thames River Police – originally hired to patrol the waters by the West India Trading Company. It was started for around £4,000, a sum the government wasn’t willing to pay for a variety of reasons—including public dissent. However, since the West India Trading company was losing £250,000 p.a year to thievery they were happy to pay—a payment that paid off. It is estimated the Thames River Police saved the company £100,000 in their first year. [25:40] One of the key events that switched over to a proper land borne police force was a famous set of murders that took place in 1811: The Ratcliffe Highway Murders. This series of seven murders helped drive the need for a more efficient and disciplined police force – and the resulting investigation ended up with a guilty verdict, a sailor who was dragged dead through the streets after strangling himself at the end of his trial. [37:58] A key event in Rob’s own service to the Thames Police took place in 1989 during a horrible event known as the Marchioness Disaster. The Marchioness, a pleasure boat, ran into a gravel trawler coming back from sea. The tide was flooding hard, the water fast, and for whatever the reason the two ships were unable to communicate. By the time Rob made it to the scene it had changed from a rescue mission to a recovery mission. 52 people lost their lives that night—however, the officers on duty did save 61 people in just four boats, in pitch black and fast moving water. Rob was on for the days after and saw firsthand how changes were made to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. The coming of the life boats afterwards took over search and rescue operations and stays in place now. I highly recommend you make it to the Thames Police Museum, which has artifacts, information, and some of the oldest documents relating to policing in the whole world. Libby Purves meets surrealist painter Patrick Hughes, Pam Dix of Disaster Action, artist and performer Scottee and Dr Bryn Dentinger, mycologist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Patrick Hughes is a surrealist painter renowned for his optical illusion technique, reverspective, where the parts of a picture which seem farthest away are actually physically the nearest. He is to receive an honorary degree, from the University of London's School of Advanced Study, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to education and research. Patrick's current exhibition New Reverspectives is at Flowers Gallery, London. Pam Dix is the co-author of Collective Conviction: The Story of Disaster Action with Anne Eyre. The book recounts how the charity Disaster Action was founded in 1991 by survivors and bereaved people affected by disasters of the late 1980s, including the King's Cross fire; the Lockerbie bombing and the sinking of the Marchioness. Pam's brother Peter died in the Pan Am 103 bombing in 1988. Since its formation Disaster Action has had a significant influence on emergency planning and management and the way people are treated after disasters. Collective Conviction: The Story of Disaster Action by Pamela Dix and Anne Eyre is published by Liverpool University Press. Scottee is a performer, broadcaster, writer and director. His solo show, The Worst of Scottee, is a reflection on his troubled past in which he looks back over his life and invites some of those he hurt and adversely affected to remember him. The Worst of Scottee is touring. Dr Bryn Dentinger is head of mycology at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew where he studies fungal diversity, distribution and conservation. His career epiphany came at 16 when his mother gave him a copy of a guide to mushrooms and challenged him to identify all the fungi in the family garden. Bryn recently discovered three new species of mushroom in a packet of supermarket porcini after putting the fungi through a DNA barcode test. Producer: Paula McGinley.

Kirsty Young's castaway is the former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio. He was capped 85 times for England, played in three Lions tours and led his club side, Wasps, to the top of the premiership five times. Yet, he says, he only started playing rugby seriously after the death of his sister, Francesca. She died in the Marchioness disaster on the Thames when he was 16 and her death, he says, blew his world apart. "Losing my sister was devastating. It made me more determined to do something to bring my parents together. When I first took up rugby, I took it up not for sporting reasons, I needed something to grab onto, I needed an olive branch." Producer: Leanne Buckle.

Manga review of Sorcerer Hunters volume 9. Art by Ray Omishi. Story by Satoru Akahori. Translated by Anita Sengupta. Originally published in Japan by Media Works. Published in US by Tokyopop, $9.99, Rated Older Teen 16+. Surely, you remember Potato Chips, the rich little kid (or is he a midget?) that was always looking to hook up in love with one of the female Sorcerer Hunters. Let's face it, Potato would hook up with ANY girl! His slightly disturbing butler Jeeves has decided to cheer his young master up by holding a beauty contest. His thinking is that Potato will be able to meet chicks. Of course, the female cast of the series gets dragged into entering as well. The main drama of volume 9 occurs when Big Mama sends the Hunters to look into a rash of disappearing young girls in the Old West town of Tamales (Akahori really goes overboard on the names in this manga). They even know who is behind it: Marchioness Carlsburg. She's not really a threat to the Hunters though. The real danger is her ally and nephew, Lendoll, a gunfighter/sorcerer who can fire magic bullets against which there is no defense. a Sorcerer Hunters is written very well for the type of manga that it is. Yeah, you have some fan service moments during the beauty contest along with a lot of speech impediment humor. But you also have a lot of action in the Lendoll story arc with violence and gore as we find out the gruesome secret of why the Marchioness is kidnapping girls. Even the last story in the book has a very different tone to it as Marron tries to help a lingering spirit disappointed in love. That last chapter has the nostalgia and wistfulness of Aria. The art is serviceable but tends to break down in the action sequences and generally lacks backgrounds. But really, Hunters straddles the border between cheap thrills and more serious themes pretty adriotly. My Grade: B+
