[Episode 38] This month, barSILENCE is behind the decks for a mixtape-style episode, spinning tracks from games that showcase hip-hop's undeniable influence on gaming history. Hip-hop and video games are two cultural powerhouses that have inspired each other for decades. This episode celebrates that intersection of beats and bits, from classic 16-bit grooves to hip-hop artists stepping in as composers. Whether it's the funk-infused rhythms of Ristar, the street-art style of Marc Ecko's Getting Up, or the raw energy and fisticuffs of Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style, hip-hop's presence in gaming is bold, loud, and unforgettable. Grab your controller, drop the needle, and press start on the ultimate hip-hop video game music mixtape! Happy Christmas everyone! Sneaking in a little bonus episode for Christmas day of some great video game tunes with some nice wintery/Christmas vibes to them. Not much talking from me and Reese on this one, wanted to try something slightly different and have an almost purely music focused episode. I think there's definitely some subjects and themes where I can probably drum up a couple of hours of music but wouldn't have much to actually say about, so maybe in future I might do some bonus episodes like this. Who knows. Another year another MAGWest, we're back in person in person this year exploring the depths of what makes 'water music' with a legend of VGM analysis, 8-bit Music Theory! We put him through the paces as we goof off in our usual Pixelated Audio style. First we 'get to the bottom' of what makes water music sound so wet with some examples and audience commentary, followed by a silly but fun quiz! Check out 8-bit Music Theory's YouTube channel. 8bmt is a music theory expert, drummer, pianist, and all around nice guy who was so kind to join us on the panel! Thanks also to special audience appearances by friends and previous PA guests: Chase Bethea (Eps: #156 and #20) Street Cleaner aka Jesse Bishop (Eps: #150 and #161) As well as comments from new musician friends Audio Mocha and winner of the sad prize, Mason Lieberman! Apologies about the audio quality, but that's live baby! We still hope you enjoy the show as much we did! We did our best to make our show as enjoyable for regular listeners, but we have also included our presentation slides which help enhance the experience. The Last Rican's World of Anime and Video Game Music. And The Uematsuplex Podcast
On this 21st Day of November, I gather various members of the VGM Podcast community to do battle for the VGM Fight Club Championship. The current champ Bedroth has had a few weeks of rest, but now he must defend his title against two heavyweights of the VGM Podcast community. Rob F'n Nichols fresh off his victory against his own podcast colleague (Pernell) looks to take the title for himself and hang it in the Rhythm and Pixels studio. However he's not the only dog in this fight. The Messenger himself arrives on the scene after redeeming himself in a brutal 4-1 match against The Last Rican. He promises to bring the title home to his soon to be wife as an early wedding gift. Who will claim victory!?!?!? YOU DECIDE!!! Also, a special Guest Apperance...... We made it to 300 episodes. Unbelievable. Didn’t have anything planned but it is still a special podcast. Sony finally gave us a taste of the PS5 UI. We also got of taste of the Xbox UI (or UX is what they calling it) from the many people who got their hands on the new console. What better way to present an underwater VGM podcast episode than to do it from a submarine, The SS Ranch-Melt Sub! In this epic episode, Voltz goes all out to bring you the greatest underwater podcast episode of all time. But has he bitten off more than he can chew? Is he prepared for the horrors of the deep sea? More importantly is he prepared for the responsibility of co-piloting a submarine during the most deadliest deep sea mission of all time? Episode 3 - The Life & Afterlife of the Sega Dreamcast Description: On the anniversary of 9.9.99, we commune with the spirit of the Sega Dreamcast. We mourn together, celebrate its history and examine its corpse. It shouldn't have existed but its disciples won't let it die! Blue Skies Forever! GAME CRIMES is a history project by Mike Bachmann (Greetings Adventures Podcast, Roll for Streetwise) and Jay Munford (SHU Podcast, Poor Skeleton Games) detailing the black market history of video games. Dreams do come true! Time for a Nights Into Dreams podcast feat. Andy aka @ProducerBTW and Aaron aka @SanityCrypto, plus what the guys are up to: standing up to cancer and podcasting in VR. We'll talk about Steven Spielberg, the 3D Controller and the invention of the analog stick, Oneirology, Freud and Jung, collecting for the Sega Saturn, the retro gaming market, imports, not missing ultra-fragile jewel cases, playing Nights then and now, sequels and spin-offs, the game's reception, reviewing things from the perspective of modernity or contemporaneous eras, struggling to define Nights Into Dreams, being threatened by walking, the appearance of S-Rankings, over-designing background texture, similarities between Sonic and Nights, a bit about Jung and shadow archetype, the vibe of the 90s and the quality in this OST, revisiting old IPs, expectations, and some of y'alls insane dreams.Links: https://thewellredmage.com/2020/01/30/top-10-dreamcast-games/https://www.twitch.tv/loveretrobtwhttps://discord.gg/QtW3V65https://tiltify.com/su2c/su2cstreamteamhttps://twitter.com/ItsVRAPodcasthttps://twitter.com/coinboyspodcastPatreonMerchGuests: @ProducerBTW and @SanityCryptoMusic: "NiGHTS" and "Dreams Dreams (Instrumental)" composed by Naofumi Hataya, Tomoko Sasaki, Fumie KumataniSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/thewellredmage)

What could the 1990 dance hit “Groove Is in the Heart” possibly have to do with video games? It’s kind of a weird story, involving the Sega series Space Channel 5 and — in the context of this episode — diversions into Herbie Hancock and the Edgar Winter Group. The fifth installment of my series on VGM and mainstream pop looks at how Sega imposed a major game over on the cult pulp icon Lady Miss Kier. Intro Banter: Clarification of Lore meaning over the last two episodes. Larry and Alex recently discussed Lore in games on the show. While we discussed the topic thoroughly off the air after listening to the published episodes it has come to our attention that our agreed upon definitions of the use of the term Lore was never mentioned on the air. We apologize for any confusion and will use this intro banter to clarify our intent. Look for this segment to be imported into the past episodes as a disclaimer in the coming weeks, so that our intended discussion may be more completely enjoyed by all! Not just Good, but SUPER Good - Top 3 lists themed by genre. Its List of Lists time and this time the Guys go ALL out for this most wonderful time of the year!! Booked, research and be ready! Platformers are ,for many gamers, the first introduction into the world of video games. Many of them have existed since the inception of arcades, home consoles, portable devices or even the home Personal Computer. There is certainly something about a platform game that’s just right. GOTTA GO FAST! Ever since stepping into the battle against injustice, Sonic has been the champion of peace and is renowned the world over for saving it countless times. During his many adventures, Sonic has traveled from the ends of the world to the far reaches of space and time, while facing countless trials that have tested him to the fullest, earning him many titles, allies and the scorns of several foes. Well-known for his legendary cocky attitude, easy-going demeanor and somewhat short temper, yet strong sense of justice, compassion, heart of gold and love for freedom and adventure, Sonic uses his abilities to protect the innocent from his world and those beyond from the forces of evil, especially his arch-nemesis Dr. Eggman (originally Introduced as Dr. Robotnick) , who constantly seeks world domination. Although at this moment, the name has brought many frowns and feelings of false hope to his followers as of late, this podcast is to remember the good music that this franchise has brought to us through the years and remember how amazing this franchise really is.
