His family was a big into basketball so golf wasn't the main sport in the family, but that didn't stop Charlie from wanting to pursue it. He played in whatever junior events he could get in and had a 2 week stretch of golf that changed his life. He placed high in an AJGA event then went on to qualify for the his 1st ever U.S. Am at the age of 16 years old. Nikitas takes us through his years playing at Miami University where he spent his 4 year splaying D1 golf at which he eventually transferred to Alabama for his final year of eligibility. Charlie tells a great story about the events leading up to him getting the offer to come to Alabama as he was going into yet another U.S. Am qualifier with no clubs and exhausted form a previous trip... you don't want to miss it. Essän publicerades ursprungligen den 31 augusti 2020.För några år sen gav jag mig in på ett vansinnesprojekt. Jag skaffade hästar. Det var två ston av en tålig, vildhästliknande ras, och de kom från olika flockar.Taiga var en ljusblack skönhet alltså, hon var gräddfärgad med vilttecken och vita slingor i sin långa, svarta man. Hon släpptes ihop med den eldröda, nästan lila Nikita, och tog omedelbart kommandot med hot om fysiskt våld, eftersom hon var kraftigare och buffligare. Men egentligen hade Nikita varit ett bättre ledarsto, hon hade haft fler föl än Taiga och var ranghög i sin ursprungsflock. Nikita var klok, subtil och raffinerat kommunikativ.I början var hästarna i stallet på nätterna. Så småningom skulle de gå dygnet runt i den stora hagen, som innehöll både skog och äng, men då behövdes det en ligghall så att de själva kunde välja var de ville ta skydd under nätter och stekheta dagar.När ligghallen äntligen kom på plats iakttog jag de båda stonas kartläggning av läget.Taiga liknade en general som breder ut den strategiska truppkartan framför sig. Hon var en intelligent häst; hon visste till exempel exakt hur man öppnar komplicerade boxhakar för att ta sig ut i stallgången och vräka i sig havre ur förrådet.Den nya byggnaden var luxuös ljus och rymlig med en djup spånbädd, doftande halm och eluppvärmd vattentunna. Taiga stack in sin sammetsgrå mule genom den breda öppningen, synfältet öppet för vidvinkelscanning, näsborrarna vibrerade och läpparna drogs upp i en grimas det var en besiktning med alla sinnen. Däremot avstod hon från att kliva in, hon backade istället, och med lätt bakåtstrukna öron och ett diskret blicktryck mot Nikitas bak föste hon in sin underlydande. Det var alltså Nikitas uppdrag att utföra den fysiska undersökningen av den nya, potentiellt farliga arkitekturen. Först efter genomgången kontroll, när Nikita redan låg och vältrade sig i spånet, klev Taiga in. Då betedde hon sig som om hon ägde stället.Det är normalt att fega ur ibland. Ibland kallas smitarbeteendet rentav för att delegera. Alla som utövar ansvar är rädda för att avslöjas som bluffande amatörer. En dominant hund kan inta en avslappnad hållning innan den plötsligt går till attack, medan en osäker hund ofta anser att anfall är bästa försvar. Skenet bedrar, och självsäkerheten är granne med rädslan.När man pratar om ledarskap brukar man låtsas att rädslan inte finns. Det brukar särskilt gälla när människor ska umgås med hästar. På ridskolor och stall förväntas man kliva in i boxen hos helt okända varelser och parera eventuella revirmarkeringar genom att utstråla auktoritet.Varför måste vi människor dölja rädslan som finns i makten?Hästar däremot, de döljer ingenting. De är kraftfulla, men också lättskrämda. De blir rädda för presenningar, jackor, bildäck som ligger på fel ställe. Vi vet att deras rädsla är farlig för oss, vi kan skada oss illa när de skenar eller flippar ur. Det är egentligen ett under att människor kan hantera de här livsfarliga monstren.Den tyska litteraturvetaren Ulrich Raulffs mastodontverk om hästens kulturhistoria, "Farewell to the Horse" som den heter i engelsk översättning, handlar om vår makt över hästen. Hästen blev människans första redskap för att förflytta sig på en helt ny hastighetsnivå ridkonsten kom tidigare än både hjulet och segelbåten och det gav möjlighet till snabbare överföring av information och erövring av avlägsna territorier. Globaliseringen påbörjades på hästrygg.Raulff kallar hästen för bondgårdens aristokrat. Och ryttaren till häst, oftast en kung, är den politiska historiens oöverträffade maktsymbol.Man brukar utgå från att det var människan som tämjde och tog makten över hästen, men troligen är det inte så enkelt. Vetenskapsjournalisten Stephen Budiansky, som har skrivit boken the Nature of the Horse om hästarnas evolution och kognition, menar att det var hästen som lät sig domesticeras och på sitt sätt tog makten över människan. Förändrade födonischer drev hästarna ut i marginalen, närmare människornas boplatser, och hästen använde sin nedärvda förmåga till underkastelse för att få fördelar. Att se hästen som förtryckt slav är en alltså förenkling. För vem leder egentligen vem?  Ibland förväxlas ledarskap med demonstrativ styrka. Men är den mest trovärdiga flockledaren verkligen den som verkar stark i alla lägen?Det man ofta glömmer i hästhantering är att ledarskap måste utövas olika med varje individ. Det är rimligt att vara avvaktande till en början, istället för att bara stövla in och domdera.Det gäller även mellan människor. Finkalibrerade verktyg behövs för att tolka varandras signaler och lita på varandra. Även när någon aktivt vill inta en högre maktposition måste denna känna motparten på pulsen innan hen vet om positioneringen är rimlig och hur den i så fall ska gå till.Man ska i och för sig inte lita helhjärtat på ett djur mänskligt eller annat ens om man tror sig känna det väl. Förberedelsen för att drabbas av svek eller våld bör ligga som en joker i bakfickan, men den ska inte finnas med i förväntningarna. Alltså: jag måste närma mig en ny häst som om jag litar på den med hela min själ, trots att jag vet att vi, utom vid enstaka ögonblick av nåd, är främlingar inför varandra.Det är mycket svårare att leda eller uppfostra individer som man samtidigt i viss mån är rädd för eller känner sig maktlös inför. Men i naturen är rangordning sällan statisk. Idén om att djurägaren måste ta kommandot och vara konsekvent, eftersom djuret annars tar över, den är gravt förenklad.Själv har jag varit sanslöst inkonsekvent med mina hästar, hundar och barn, det vill säga jag har varit mig själv. Och förresten vill jag hellre kalla min bristande konsekvens för flexibel uppriktighet.Tänk om jag får en komplex hund för att jag är en komplex människa, ett komplicerat barn för att jag själv, på gott och ont, är mångfacetterad? Att barn härmar vuxna, det vet vi. Och mycket tyder på att även hundar kan konsten att härma människor.En konsekvent människa är en endimensionell människa, där vägval och beslut alltid är tydliga. Men känslovarelser är böjliga och flytande. Livserfarenheten anpassar sig på nya sätt i varje situation.Jag ville egentligen inte uppfostra mina barn alls. Det är inte samma sak som oengagerad, fri uppfostran. Visst ville jag lära dem saker, men jag ville lära dem avslappnat och levande, ville att de skulle smittas av min kunskap. Jag vill också smittas av deras. Detsamma gäller mitt förhållande till djur.Att umgås med barn och djur är att be om problem, men kontakten med främlingen är också en övning i komplicerad kärlek. Ingen äkta kärlek kan uppstå utan inslag av rädsla, oro, ensamhet och missförstånd. Ingen trygghet heller.Att som förälder få nyckfulla vredesutbrott eller dra in veckopengen ena gången och andra inte, det är inget problem så länge kärleken bär över det irrationella beteendet. Den som vill uppfostra livsdugliga realister och samarbetsvilliga partners i en osäker värld och det gäller både människor och djur gör bäst i att gestalta det ofullkomliga snarare än till det tillrättalagt perfekta. Det kallas anpassningsförmåga. Med andra ord: Survival of the fittest.Många ridhästar vet allt om anpassning, så oändligt förlåtande, tålmodiga med barn och nervösa nybörjare. Det stämmer inte att hästar omedelbart tar kommandot och börjar mopsa om människan visar minsta spår av osäkerhet. Så rigida är inte hästar. Tvärtom vet de något som vi också borde lära oss: Pragmatiker överlever längre. Och i förvirringen och bristen har tilliten sitt hem.Aase Berg, författare

Det är med hästar som med människor vi är känslodrivna, nyckfulla och inkonsekventa. Varför ägnar vi så mycket kraft åt att förneka det? undrar Aase Berg. ESSÄ: Detta är en text där skribenten reflekterar över ett ämne eller ett verk. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna. För några år sen gav jag mig in på ett vansinnesprojekt. Jag skaffade hästar. Det var två ston av en tålig, vildhästliknande ras, och de kom från olika flockar. Taiga var en ljusblack skönhet alltså, hon var gräddfärgad med vilttecken och vita slingor i sin långa, svarta man. Hon släpptes ihop med den eldröda, nästan lila Nikita, och tog omedelbart kommandot med hot om fysiskt våld, eftersom hon var kraftigare och buffligare. Men egentligen hade Nikita varit ett bättre ledarsto, hon hade haft fler föl än Taiga och var ranghög i sin ursprungsflock. Nikita var klok, subtil och raffinerat kommunikativ. I början var hästarna i stallet på nätterna. Så småningom skulle de gå dygnet runt i den stora hagen, som innehöll både skog och äng, men då behövdes det en ligghall så att de själva kunde välja var de ville ta skydd under nätter och stekheta dagar. När ligghallen äntligen kom på plats iakttog jag de båda stonas kartläggning av läget. Taiga liknade en general som breder ut den strategiska truppkartan framför sig. Hon var en intelligent häst; hon visste till exempel exakt hur man öppnar komplicerade boxhakar för att ta sig ut i stallgången och vräka i sig havre ur förrådet. Den nya byggnaden var luxuös ljus och rymlig med en djup spånbädd, doftande halm och eluppvärmd vattentunna. Taiga stack in sin sammetsgrå mule genom den breda öppningen, synfältet öppet för vidvinkelscanning, näsborrarna vibrerade och läpparna drogs upp i en grimas det var en besiktning med alla sinnen. Däremot avstod hon från att kliva in, hon backade istället, och med lätt bakåtstrukna öron och ett diskret blicktryck mot Nikitas bak föste hon in sin underlydande. Det var alltså Nikitas uppdrag att utföra den fysiska undersökningen av den nya, potentiellt farliga arkitekturen. Först efter genomgången kontroll, när Nikita redan låg och vältrade sig i spånet, klev Taiga in. Då betedde hon sig som om hon ägde stället. Det är normalt att fega ur ibland. Ibland kallas smitarbeteendet rentav för att delegera. Alla som utövar ansvar är rädda för att avslöjas som bluffande amatörer. En dominant hund kan inta en avslappnad hållning innan den plötsligt går till attack, medan en osäker hund ofta anser att anfall är bästa försvar. Skenet bedrar, och självsäkerheten är granne med rädslan. När man pratar om ledarskap brukar man låtsas att rädslan inte finns. Det brukar särskilt gälla när människor ska umgås med hästar. På ridskolor och stall förväntas man kliva in i boxen hos helt okända varelser och parera eventuella revirmarkeringar genom att utstråla auktoritet. Varför måste vi människor dölja rädslan som finns i makten? Hästar däremot, de döljer ingenting. De är kraftfulla, men också lättskrämda. De blir rädda för presenningar, jackor, bildäck som ligger på fel ställe. Vi vet att deras rädsla är farlig för oss, vi kan skada oss illa när de skenar eller flippar ur. Det är egentligen ett under att människor kan hantera de här livsfarliga monstren. Den tyska litteraturvetaren Ulrich Raulffs mastodontverk om hästens kulturhistoria, "Farewell to the Horse" som den heter i engelsk översättning, handlar om vår makt över hästen. Hästen blev människans första redskap för att förflytta sig på en helt ny hastighetsnivå ridkonsten kom tidigare än både hjulet och segelbåten och det gav möjlighet till snabbare överföring av information och erövring av avlägsna territorier. Globaliseringen påbörjades på hästrygg. Raulff kallar hästen för bondgårdens aristokrat. Och ryttaren till häst, oftast en kung, är den politiska historiens oöverträffade maktsymbol. Man brukar utgå från att det var människan som tämjde och tog makten över hästen, men troligen är det inte så enkelt. Vetenskapsjournalisten Stephen Budiansky, som har skrivit boken the Nature of the Horse om hästarnas evolution och kognition, menar att det var hästen som lät sig domesticeras och på sitt sätt tog makten över människan. Förändrade födonischer drev hästarna ut i marginalen, närmare människornas boplatser, och hästen använde sin nedärvda förmåga till underkastelse för att få fördelar. Att se hästen som förtryckt slav är en alltså förenkling. För vem leder egentligen vem?  Ibland förväxlas ledarskap med demonstrativ styrka. Men är den mest trovärdiga flockledaren verkligen den som verkar stark i alla lägen? Det man ofta glömmer i hästhantering är att ledarskap måste utövas olika med varje individ. Det är rimligt att vara avvaktande till en början, istället för att bara stövla in och domdera. Det gäller även mellan människor. Finkalibrerade verktyg behövs för att tolka varandras signaler och lita på varandra. Även när någon aktivt vill inta en högre maktposition måste denna känna motparten på pulsen innan hen vet om positioneringen är rimlig och hur den i så fall ska gå till. Man ska i och för sig inte lita helhjärtat på ett djur mänskligt eller annat ens om man tror sig känna det väl. Förberedelsen för att drabbas av svek eller våld bör ligga som en joker i bakfickan, men den ska inte finnas med i förväntningarna. Alltså: jag måste närma mig en ny häst som om jag litar på den med hela min själ, trots att jag vet att vi, utom vid enstaka ögonblick av nåd, är främlingar inför varandra. Det är mycket svårare att leda eller uppfostra individer som man samtidigt i viss mån är rädd för eller känner sig maktlös inför. Men i naturen är rangordning sällan statisk. Idén om att djurägaren måste ta kommandot och vara konsekvent, eftersom djuret annars tar över, den är gravt förenklad. Själv har jag varit sanslöst inkonsekvent med mina hästar, hundar och barn, det vill säga jag har varit mig själv. Och förresten vill jag hellre kalla min bristande konsekvens för flexibel uppriktighet. Tänk om jag får en komplex hund för att jag är en komplex människa, ett komplicerat barn för att jag själv, på gott och ont, är mångfacetterad? Att barn härmar vuxna, det vet vi. Och mycket tyder på att även hundar kan konsten att härma människor. En konsekvent människa är en endimensionell människa, där vägval och beslut alltid är tydliga. Men känslovarelser är böjliga och flytande. Livserfarenheten anpassar sig på nya sätt i varje situation. Jag ville egentligen inte uppfostra mina barn alls. Det är inte samma sak som oengagerad, fri uppfostran. Visst ville jag lära dem saker, men jag ville lära dem avslappnat och levande, ville att de skulle smittas av min kunskap. Jag vill också smittas av deras. Detsamma gäller mitt förhållande till djur. Att umgås med barn och djur är att be om problem, men kontakten med främlingen är också en övning i komplicerad kärlek. Ingen äkta kärlek kan uppstå utan inslag av rädsla, oro, ensamhet och missförstånd. Ingen trygghet heller. Att som förälder få nyckfulla vredesutbrott eller dra in veckopengen ena gången och andra inte, det är inget problem så länge kärleken bär över det irrationella beteendet. Den som vill uppfostra livsdugliga realister och samarbetsvilliga partners i en osäker värld och det gäller både människor och djur gör bäst i att gestalta det ofullkomliga snarare än till det tillrättalagt perfekta. Det kallas anpassningsförmåga. Med andra ord: Survival of the fittest. Många ridhästar vet allt om anpassning, så oändligt förlåtande, tålmodiga med barn och nervösa nybörjare. Det stämmer inte att hästar omedelbart tar kommandot och börjar mopsa om människan visar minsta spår av osäkerhet. Så rigida är inte hästar. Tvärtom vet de något som vi också borde lära oss: Pragmatiker överlever längre. Och i förvirringen och bristen har tilliten sitt hem. Aase Berg, författare

Kali Nikitas wears a lot of hats, as an academic administrator, educator, graphic designer and curator. Kali is Department Chair of Communication Arts and MFA Graphic Design at Otis College of Art and Design. She and her husband, Rich Shelton, are the partners of Graphic Design for Love (+$). We start the interview talking about Kali’s teaching experience and how her perspective on teaching has changed over the years. We’re also curious why she has moved around so much and like to hear more about her long-standing relationship with the Netherlands. Because Kali has curated several design exhibitions we wonder if there’re similarities between teaching, running the design department and curating. One of her exhibitions is called ‘And She Told 2Friends: An International Exhibition of Graphic Design by Women’. Because it took place twenty years ago, we talk about it’s relevance nowadays.
