In 1949, a determined pair of Englishmen took on the whole of Grand Prix racing with their new little cars, and they were the first British Formula team to make the scene at the dawn of a new era. John Heath and George Abecassis built precious few machines, and their efforts are largely unknown today... but the story of their HWM racing team is a fascinating and often surprising one. In this our sixth episode, we revisit HWM Aston Martin at Walton-on-Thames to see a stunning Aston Martin V8 Vantage Le Mans. The V8 Vantage Le Mans represents the last of the fully handcrafted, coach-built era. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1999, it was launched as a celebration of the run-out of this charismatic Tadek Marek engine, Virage chassis bloodline. The reference Le Mans reference Aston Martin's win of the 24hr race in a DBR1 of 1959. Production was between December 1999 and October 2000 from the Aston Martin Newport Pagnell facility. To consider this end of an era, along with the V600, we join in conversation with Guy Jenner, the CEO at HWM and Steve Waddingham, the Aston Martin Lagonda historian, where we hear stories about the cars and the people behind these special V8 cars and the transition to the Vanquish.

This week I took a trip for coffee and then sat down with Otis Hughes to talk about his history playing in such bands as Animal Bag, M4 Messenger, Poor Blue, Skynoceros, The Mystery Plan, Gideon Smith & The Dixie Damned, Overlord, and more, as well as a new, not-yet-named band to debut soon! We talk a lot about being in LA at the end of the eighties, how sometimes a recording deal ends because of new bosses, the influence of Spinal Tap, the loss of bandmates, and paying tribute to them by still playing the songs from time to time. In addition to his time in Pipe, Zen Frisbee, Small, Evil Wiener, The Bad Checks, and Superchunk, we also talk about a lot of Chapel Hill music scene history, why Charlotte has never seen the success of the triangle scene, and how my old band once payed tribute to one of his. After we packed up, Chuck remembered some things he forgot to talk about, so some sort of part two is already in discussion! This week I had a conversation with my friend, Ryan McGinnis! The last time he was on was to talk about and promote his debut novel, Tears of the Dragon. When I heard that he was already releasing the follow up to that awesome first novel, I had to have him on again! We talk about a little bit of everything from what's going on with GGH, covid, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Milestone Club, Tremont Music Hall, My So-Called Band, and of course we talk about his first book, his new book, The Osiris Initiative, and his new novella, as well as those in the works! This was supposed to be a short, thirty minute episode, but it all worked, so you get to hear two old friends get nerdy and talk old times for an hour and a half! I don't think it's overstating things to call Hot Water Music not only one of the most influential and respected bands in the last three decades of this scene, but one of the most genre-defining bands as well. For the second time in this show's history, we got to chat up one of the founding members! This time, the victim was Jason Black, who in my mind is one of the most under-rated bass players in rock music. We talk about whether being an underrated bass player in a genre-defining band is all it's cracked up to be, but more importantly, we chat a lot about the brand new HWM album, "Feel The Void." It's out March 18th on Equal Vision Records, and not only does it mark the first time the band reunited with producer Brian McTernan, it also marks the band's first full-length with Chris Cresswell in the mix as a permanent member...even taking lead vocal duties on a song! We also talk a lot about how the band came together to write the album - no easy task given that they collaborated from their home bases in Florida (Wollard, Black and Rebelo), California (Ragan), Maryland (McTernan) and now Ontario (Cresswell). Hurray for Zoom! Back again, after an extended break, and this week I sat down with Robert Everett, owner of Spooky's Records and Collectibles in Gastonia, NC! In addition to currently owning and operating his own record store, Robert has also played in local bands, worked for Repo Records in the 90's, spent some time being guitar tech for Whiskeytown, worked as a soundman for multiple local bands, spent 30 years as a union stagehand for major tours, and played bass on the very last GG Allin recording. We talk about all of that and so much more on the first new episode in over three months! (trust me... I've been busy. You'll hear about all that and the future of GGH soon!)Spooky's Records and Collectibles: https://www.facebook.com/Spookys-Records-and-Collectibles-261119202460493902 a Bessemer City Road, Gastonia, NCGabba Gabba Huh?: https://linktr.ee/gabbagabbahuhSongs for GGHT59:GG Allin & The Carolina Shitkickers - I Wanna Fuck the Shit Out Of YouGG Allin & The Carolina Shitkickers - Layin' Up With LindaThis episode is brought to you by Hobo Wolfman Records.
How can I as a service designer, be of more value to my organisation? That's the question we're exploring in this weeks episode of the Show. And the answers we find will surprise you! So yeah, of course you want to work on challenges that matter. You want to make a difference. But all too often designers are still not heard within enterprise environments. And you know what that means. When this keeps going on too long you will eventually becoming irrelevant. And fail to achieve your mission. Tricia Wang, our guest this week, has an interesting take on why this is happening... Designers have the tendency to get in their own way. What does this mean? It means that we've adopted anti-patterns that actually prevent us from achieving success on the level we desire. According to Tricia we need to uncenter ourselves and transition from being a guru to being a guide. If this sounds abstract don't worry. Tricia provides some very practical things you can do in your day-to-day work to make this happen. Things like sharing unfinished work, ditching the HWM and much more. So when you feel like you could be making a bigger impact on your organisation, but aren't sure how to do that. This episode might just hold the clue you're looking for. I love how Tricia challenges some of the assumptions and habits that we've developed in the design community. It might be confrontational at first but it's a conversation that we need to have sooner than later. Hot Water Music is a punk rock band from Gainesville, Florida. The members of the band are Chuck Ragan, Chris Wollard (both lead vocals and guitar), Jason Black (bass), and George Rebelo (drums) first formed in 1993. Chapter 117: "Twenty Years And Counting" ...as read by Jason Black of Hot Water Music Twenty years ago today Gainesville Florida natives Hot Water Music released their second full length called "Forever And Counting". This is the first album I ever heard by them and although I will admit it isn't their best effort it is still my favorite. Imagine my surprise to get bassist Jason Black on the show to learn that "Forever" is the bands least favorite release. HA! Well, I don't care...we're doing this anyway. Jason Black and I sat down to discuss how Hot Water Music got started because a strip mall happened to have a frozen yogurt and a Subway in it. We talk a lot about the new release "Light It Up" and we step track by track through the "Forever And Counting" album. Thanks Amy Sciarretto of Atom Splitter for making this possible. The second album from Hot Water Music gives us plenty to like, but much to scratch our heads at as well. Whether you call them punk, post-punk, post-hardcore or emo, HWM forge a unique path on 1997′s Forever and Counting, avoiding the rhythms and structures traditionally associated with punk rock. While we dug the diversity, the presentation left us wanting, as a dynamic-less mix and some questionable guitar and bass tones muddied the water. Give a listen and share your thoughts. Special thanks to Sudio Sweden (Facebook/Instagram), who hooked us up with two pairs of Regent headphones to test out.
