Welcome back, DIF Listeners! Christopher Saint wrote, directed and produced the film “Śokasana,” a beautiful film that had its world premiere as an official selection at Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024 and it took home a Programmer's Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking. I don't want to spoil what Chris reveals during this podcast; suffice to say that he completely surprised me with his professional and artistic background. It was a pleasure to learn the origins of “Śokasana.” If you listen to enough of these podcasts you will come to know that for me there are no topics more important to human storytelling than grief, loss and pain. Happy Cinco de Mayo to those who celebrate! This week we're excited to present a special programmer's preview of our upcoming retrospective, Kira Muratova: Scenographies of Chaos, taking place in our theaters May 16-25. The episode features a conversation between FLC programmer Madeline Whittle, Marta Kuzma (Professor of Art at Yale University), and film scholar and writer Ivan Kozlenk. Get tickets at filmlinc.org/muratova Kira Muratova: Scenographies of Chaos offers a rare opportunity to explore the complete body of work of a filmmaker who remained largely unknown to American audiences during her lifetime and has only recently come into widespread international acclaim. Muratova is now widely considered the greatest Ukrainian filmmaker of the last half century—and arguably one of the most influential women directors in cinema history. Deeply fascinated by eccentric characters and linguistic deviations, Muratova honed a distinctive style characterized by surreal and unexpected repetitions, refracting the experience of an unstable reality by way of outré storytelling devices. Caustic and misanthropic in life, Muratova nevertheless was touchingly humanistic in her films, radiating childish wonder, defiant hope, and sparkling irony.

How do you make a computer act less like a computer? It sounds like some kind of riddle, but in the early 1960s it was an actual problem. As IBM customers transitioned from tabulators to computers they ran into all sorts of practical issues. Programmers became a hot commodity. But how do you find a programmer in 1959? And how can you even afford such a luxury? Wouldn't it be better if you could just use your new computer as a tabulator? Well, with RPG, all that and more was possible.

Elaine chats with Katch Holmes Creative Producer and Programmer and steerer of Knockengorroch Festival. We chat everything from the beginnings of the festival, finding your North Star, music and how it makes you feel and much more. KNOCKENGORROCH FESTIVAL 22ND -25TH MAY 2025 TICKET LINK Link to hear Kuchke Knockengorroch and The Green Gathering Two of the UK's longest-running grassroots festivals – Knockengorroch and The Green Gathering – are joining forces to create a pioneering partnership celebrating Celtic music, land, and nature. Launching at a time when independent festivals are under increasing pressure, Meet Us by the Fireside is a symbol of resilience and unity, offering festival-goers a unique opportunity to experience both events at a discounted rate. Green Gathering Tickets Knockengorroch Festival Knockengorroch Festivals were born from a love of the land, excellent roots music and celebrating the good times. We present unparalleled music, arts and workshops in a beautiful mountain riverside meadow. For us location is key. We are one of the most beautiful and unique festival venues in the UK. Our festival commemorates and celebrates the history and the people that once lived in our valley, in former times an entire village… We are a festival run by a family, for families, in the very broadest sense of the word. We support rural regeneration in the Uplands of Scotland, creating local business and enterprise, and attracting visitors to a still surprisingly relatively unexplored region of Scotland, our ‘Hidden Gem'. In times long past the native hills and streams of Scotland shaped its music. Stream becomes river, rural track becomes urban street, the musical landscape of today's global village is diverse, both urban and rurally inspired. But all music speaks a universal language. Knockengorroch establishes progressive linkage between sounds indigenous to its natural amphitheatre venue and the now far-flung Celtic diaspora, once rooted in such homely places. We promote multi-cultural forms and musical genres, highlighting the connection between roots music and the lands and people that created it. Music from all continents is presented alongside the best in Scottish talent to showcase music in both traditional and contemporary fields. It is Knockengorroch's unique remit not only to celebrate cultural diversity and fusion, but to make the music home amongst the hills once more, and give it up to the people. Katch Holmes Katch is a Creative Producer. She conceives of, synthesise and deliver international cultural activity, having worked in the sector for over 20 years. She programmes and steers the Knockengorroch music festival which takes place in the Southern Uplands of South West Scotland. Katch produces further creative projects that highlight people, landscape and heritage. Interesting quotes from the thread I get it replaces pip/pyenv, but should I also use it instead of the built in 'python -m venv .venv'? But I need python installed to make python programs? Because it places the venv in the project folder and I can't run executables from there due to corporate policy. Many such cases. No idea why astral doesn't address this with more urgency. Sounds like a bad corporate policy :) i'm too lazy to switch from pyenv and pip trust issues, what if they do a bait and switch … Because everyone said that about poetry and I'm not sure I'm really ready to get hurt again. Masochism Many times I tried a lot of similar tools and always come back to pip and pip-tools. Them are just work, why should I spend my time for something "cool" that will bring more problems? I tried this week but I was expecting a "uv install requests" instead of "uv add". Switched back to pipenv. we partially use it. will transition when Dependabot support is available. I'll leave it with → Jared Scheel: Seeing a whole lotta Stockholm Syndrome in the replies to this question. Brian #2: Python Developer Tooling Handbook Tim Hopper “This is not a book about programming Python. Instead, the goal of this book is to help you understand the ecosystem of tools used to make Python development easier and more productive” Covers tools related to packaging, linting, formatting, and managing dependencies. Michael #3: Calling all doc writers: blacken-docs Run black on python code blocks in documentation files You can also install blacken-docs as a pre-commit hook. Any cell named as test_* is automatically discoverable and testable by pytest. The same goes for any cell that contains only test_ functions and Test classes.” “Importantly, because cells are wrapped in functions, running pytest test_notebook.py doesn't execute the entire notebook — just its tests.” Extras Brian: PyConUS announces Refund Policy for International Attendees New format now live for The Complete pytest Course Bundle and component courses Each course now available separately also pytest Primary Power is 13 lessons, 3.9 hours Using pytest with Projects, 10 lessons, 3.4 hours pytest Booster Rockets, 6 lessons, 1.3 hours of content New format is easier to navigate Better for people who like different speeds. “Architainment”. You might hate the term, but Sam has embraced it as it perfectly describes what he does. Coming from the theatre world, and tiring of tech week and the cue-to-cue's, Sam moved into the 9 to 5(-ish) world of architectural lighting. He still holds onto that creative theatricality and applies it to theme parks, building facades, and bridges. But that doesn't mean the work headaches have gone away. Listen to his story about the Manhattan building project that started out great, but devolved into weeks of extra work when the contractor fell behind. Sam is the sole proprietor of At Full Lighting, a company that specializes in large-scale entertainment and architectural lighting installations. Before starting At Full Lighting, he held various positions in many different areas of the lighting industry. He's sailed the high seas as shipwide show control on cruise ships, spent ten months living in Dubai commissioning & programming a new amusement park, and has volunteered his time at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival two years in a row. Sam has worked for various manufacturers and lighting integrators in the US and abroad, acting in various roles such as Project Manager, Service Technician, and Programmer. He has been an ETC Factory Certified Technician for twelve years and a member of their Advanced Programmers Group for the last eleven. He is also a certified trainer for ETC's Eos line of consoles. He received a BFA in Theatrical Lighting Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. Sam has been based out of New York for the past thirteen years.

Hello to all my DIF Listeners and Friends! For me, one of the highlights of the 2024 Sherman Oaks Festival was writer/producer/artist Jess Paul using the All Access Pass that she got for her film “Burying Baby” being a Official Selection to attend many screenings throughout the festival. Obviously I started this podcast because I love indie films and talking about them, and every time I ran into Jess at the festival we would have a great chat about the films she had seen and about the festival in general. “Burying Baby” is a touching, authentically surprising short film about loss that is very close to my heart and it took him the Programmer's Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking.                                                                                                                                                                     I will not go into it too much, but Jess and I did email about her film prior to the festival and this classy, kind person gave me a lovely gift that is hanging on my All Access Pass as I type. We had a great chat on this podcast and Jess's intelligence and perspective struck me so that when I had to give podcast producer Karina Wolfe a list of potential interviewers for DIF Episode 500 in February, I added her to this list! What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Friday I chatted with filmmaker Clarke Wolfe about her short film “A Shining Example” (a darkly comic tribute to The Shining) that she brought to Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2024 and pulled in a pair of awards for; the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Writing, Horror and “Programmer's Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking.” Clarke directed, co-wrote and played the lead character in the film. I was not able to moderate Clarke's Q&A so I was thrilled to chat with her on the podcast and equally eager to follow up with the 4 Questions! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter – TikTok

Happy Friday, Everyone! Filmmaker Clarke Wolfe brought her short film “A Shining Example” to Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2024 and pulled in a pair of awards; the Filmmakers Award, chosen by our jury that is entirely made up of alumni, gave Clarke and co-writer Dylan Guerra the award for Outstanding Writing, Horror and a jury of one gave the film what we call, “Programmer's Prize for Exceptional Filmmaking.” Don't come at me too hard for saying this, but this darkly comic tribute to The Shining is, for me, better than the original book or film because the perspective is fresh and authentic. Clarke directed, co-wrote and played the lead character in the film.                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Much to my chagrin, “A Shining Example” played in the theater where I was not moderating Q&A's, an unfortunate fact that kept me from praising Clarke's work in front of an audience.                                 Happily Clarke is among the first to hop onto the Discover Indie Film podcast after SOFF 2024, which made e feel a lot better that I was in the theater next door during her Q&A. About two years ago, a small indie team released Bread & Fred on the unassuming masses. Starring two adorable penguins, the game became a viral sensation with its hilariously challenging gameplay that's been streamed to millions of viewers. On the heels of its success, Sand Castles Studio got to work on a free add-on for those looking for an even greater challenge. Dubbed The Lab, that update was released on March 7th. Just before that, I was able to wrangle the team together to talk with me about their indie developer journey and how the title blew up. The said team consists of David Lozano Sánchez (Programmer), Guillem Romero Martínez-Quintanilla (Game Designer), and Victor Valiente (Artist). In this week's episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Cami Smith, an incredible artist and community builder who shared her inspiring creative journey. We explored the importance of connecting with our creative selves and overcoming the limiting beliefs that hold us back. Cami spoke of her passion for building community, how her mother influenced her art, her creative evolution from fiber arts to painting, and we discussed how creativity gives us a sense of control, and acts like a rudder for our lives. We also reflected on the wisdom of Jane Dunnewald, and how her message of self-love and acceptance is the foundation for a good life. We talked about the importance of being curious and that the universe does not take away gifts but uses them to propel us forward. How does your creativity make you feel more in control? Listen to the full episode for insights and ideas on how to trust your creative intuition. In our latest episode, we had the privilege of diving deep into a conversation with Cami Smith, a truly inspiring artist, community builder, and all-around creative force. Cami's journey, from fiber art and quilting to her current passion for painting, is a testament to the power of embracing change and trusting your own unique path. We discussed how our creativity helps us to feel in control of our lives, and how those feelings can guide us through difficult moments. One of the most compelling themes of our conversation was the importance of community. Cami, who says that “community is my middle name,” has spent years actively building connections within the fiber art world, and now as a painter. For Cami community provides a way for artists from around the world to connect. She is also very active in the digital gaming community, supporting programmers and other introverted creatives through community events. As Kate pointed out, the importance of community is vital, even though she herself is an introvert. We also delved into the challenge of overcoming our inner critics. Those nagging voices that tell us we're not good enough or that we're not doing things right. Cami shared how her own evolution as an artist has helped her silence that voice, as has her work in the game industry, where she encourages others to find their space. She has learned how to identify and reframe her negative thoughts, a practice that has been transformative for her, and Kate shared her process of journaling and reframing her thoughts by understanding the feelings and actions they provoke.Cami's personal journey is also deeply rooted in the influence of her artist mother. Cami shared stories about her mother's artistic practice, her unique way of seeing the world and the challenges she faced as a female artist in her time. Cami's mother inspired her to be independent and this value became an important part of Cami's life as well. We explored the idea that sometimes our life's experiences, including loss and change, can be seen like peeling an onion. Each layer that comes off reveals more of who we are and the potential for growth, and every loss is another opportunity.Drawing on the wisdom of Jane Dunnewald, we discussed the notion that creativity makes us feel more in control. Jane's powerful message of self-acceptance and self-love resonated deeply, as it is the starting point for a fulfilling and authentic life. Jane's work emphasizes curiosity, clarity, confidence and community, and these pillars act as guideposts for us as we navigate our way.Cami and Kate also explored the idea of bridging the gap between the art world and large corporations. This led to a discussion about the ways that larger institutions can incorporate human touches into their practices, and how the art community can build relationships that support these changes. Cami noted that Amazon has supported some of her community events for people in the digital games industry.Cami shared a bit about her sketchbook practices, and how she uses them to record her ideas, her random thoughts and her colours. During the pandemic she led an online course based on maps, and she is currently creating a piece that weaves memories into her art. Finally, we closed out our discussion with a reflection on one of Jane's most important messages: that the universe doesn't just give you something only to take it away. We acknowledged the truth in that, that sometimes things may feel like they are being taken away, however, in hindsight, we can see that those “losses” are really just catalysts for something new. This conversation left us feeling empowered and inspired. We hope that you will take a moment to listen, embrace your creativity and connect with your community. The universe is always giving, even when it seems like it is taking away.
