This episode is brought to you by Virtual not Distant, where we help leaders and managers of remote teams. https://www.virtualnotdistant.com/ Anish Hindocha is a “lean consultant, with a slight bent towards culture transformation” Lean thinking takes the lean principles developed by Toyota, outside of the production industry, from how you orientate a strategy to how teams problem-solve. Lean turns the traditional hierarchical organisation on its head, asking who knows most about where the organisations problems are. (It's the people doing the work!) and has trust and team work at its core. Is it about adopting a certain mindset? Lean organisations are usually learning organisations. What are some of the principles we can adapt as managers? We can look at the principles, eg. define value from the point of view of the customer. Then we begin to challenge what we're doing, looking for “waste” and making tiny improvements to our process. At a time when many teams and organisations are designing a new way of working, adopting some of these principles can save us time and energy in the future. Embracing lean needs a growth mindset, not hiding from problems and mistakes, and noticing them to spot opportunities for opportunities. It needs to be ok to spot and flag mistakes, and addressing mistakes become a way of embracing the learning journey. Anish tells the story of a department who'd never had half an hour with the business director (four layers up) before he organised a meeting with them. It was an eye opener for him, hearing some of the problems and solutions they were raising directly from them, which he'd never heard before. The push for sustainability and purpose-led organisations could be the future of where lean thinking goes. After all, lean is about connecting people, process and purpose. Kevin Plank, Under Armour, Rebel Ideas and Starting A Business at 40plus So often when we hear of budding entrepreneurs, and we have profiled quite a few over the years, we usually think of young go getters with new ideas and masses of energy who embark on a focussed journey to success. But is setting up a business at a young age a sure-fire route to success or is there something to be said for gathering experience and knowledge first? Online publication, Inc.com featured an article which suggests that older can sometime be better. A study of 2.7million business start ups threw out some interesting data which turns the ‘start early' idea on its head. It's an interesting article and certainly food for thought. Former Olympic table tennis player Matthew Syed has turned his hand to writing in recent years and we have talked about his book Black Box Thinking in the past however, his latest offering is encouraging us to think differently. Rebel Ideas, The Power Of Thinking Differently explores some of the reason why man makes mistakes, sometimes with world changing consequence, and he uses the art of storytelling to help us understand the points he makes. His live virtual book launch at the start of Covid 19 provides an insight into the way he thinks and demonstrates to us the many reasons why his book is worth reading. Since Heather heavily invested in sports clothing company Under Armour via Revolut she's been keeping a close eye on billionaire founder Kevin Plank in the hope that some of his luck might rub off on her significant investments. Plank set up the clothing giant almost by accident and it has literally taken over as one of the most sought after brands for stylish exercise. Even if you aren't familiar with the brand you will know it if you see the logo. Planks story is an interesting one and could probably be put in the young entrepreneur category we discussed earlier. Change is so inevitable too - our lives change all the time, so it's natural that parts of our identity change over our lives as well - once we realise that we're free to define ourselves however we like and stop restricting ourselves with labels that no longer fit with who we are, we're free to do so much more than we might have thought possible. Alex Edmans is a professor of finance at London Business School and the author of the book, "Grow the Pie: How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit". He is an expert in corporate governance, executive compensation, corporate social responsibility, and behavioral finance. We discuss: - Nikki's Vista article  - Are investors fundamentally decision makers? - Decision making is often influenced by circumstances and those around us. - It's easy to slip into a role. - (Listen to the podcast that Dan references several times with Jeff Housenbold from the Vision Fund). -We're forming a story in our head whenever we meet someone. - - Subconsciously, we are forming a view and looking for information that you're right (this is known as confirmation bias). - It's important to move away from having to be right so you can be more open. - We're always very limited in our information both on decisions and on people? Don't forget that moods influence decisions and we don't have visibility of how others are feeling. - Best time to make decisions: before, after lunch? It could influence things more than you think. - Evening out decisions during the day could help and not trying to make a lot of decisions toward the end. - Perspective – this matters hugely, our perspective influences us more than we know. There are ways of combatting such as looking for diversity, demographic diversity, background diversity. - Listen to our podcast reviewing Mathew Syed's book Rebel Ideas here. - Your own experiences make up only 0.0001% of what's happened but probably 80% of the way you think the world works. - Information asymmetry – there's always hidden information in a decision and it's impossible to know everything that other people around the table know. One thing to take away Assessing how you make decisions can add a lot of value. Ask yourself: is your decision making body diverse, are you seeing (enough) challenge? Do you always seem to make consensus decisions? Do you record your decisions? Today's episode is a conversation with Dr. Michael Muthukrishna, an Associate Professor of Economic Psychology at the London School of Economics. Michael's research takes on a suite of topics that all start from a single big question: Why are we so different from other animals? Part of the answer has to do with our neural hardware. There's no question we've got big brains—and Michael has some cool things to say about why they may have gotten so big. But Michael is just as focused on our cultural software—the tools and ideas we develop, tweak, share, and accumulate over time. You might say he's more impressed by our collective brains than by our individual brains. To study all this, Michael builds formal theories and computational models; he runs experiments; and he constructs and analyzes huge databases. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. We talk about the finding that the size and interconnectedness of a social group affects the cultural skills that group can develop and maintain. We consider what actually powers innovation (hint: it's not lone geniuses). We discuss how diversity is a bit double-edged and why psychology needs to become a historical science. And that, my friends, is hardly all—we also touch on cetaceans, religious history, and spinning plates. I've been hoping to have Michael on the show for months now. His work is deeply theoretical, advancing the basic science of what it means to be human. But it's also engaged with important practical issues—issues like corruption and cultural diversity.
