Can a plane just fall out of the sky? And what happens if the pilot needs a poo mid-flight? We ask this week's guest Flea. She is a commercial airline pilot who tells us everything we've ever wanted to know about flying a plane, including the meals they eat, why it's called a cock pit and if birds ever get sucked up into the engine. We can count on one finger, the number of people who have worked in a doughnut van and who have also been part of the Portsmouth Reptile Society. And she joins us today. It's Suzi Ruffell. Suzi joined us at our live show in Brighton, where she told us about all of the things she used to do before becoming a big name comedian. Including how she used to smell so bad from one of her jobs, her mum made her get undressed before entering the house. This episode was proudly sponsored by BrewDog Punk IPA. This week, Joe and Tom sit down with Anna and Nev, the sibling duo behind the UK's oldest family-run caff. It's been serving up lasagnas, fry-ups and strong cups of tea for 125 years — long enough to witness changing food trends, a few fights behind the counter, and some very questionable breakfast orders. They spill the beans on famous customers, proper portions, and why calling it a “café” is just plain wrong. Oh, and Madonna might have had their bread and butter pudding. What did comedian Jamali Maddix do before making it as a big time comedian? It's the people's champion, a TPD legend... Josh the Chimney Sweep is back! We're in Bristol, and he's here for a catch up, some bonkers hypothetical questions, and to tell us what cultural things he's been up to. Our guest this week is Danny Robins, ghost hunter and host of Uncanny. He spends his life speaking to people who swear they've seen ghosts—but does he actually believe in them? Welcome to Things People Brew part two, where today we are recording in an actual lab! Our guest is Fraser, a beer scientist who is here to blow our minds with all the clever stuff that goes into beer making. We talk about fermentation, flavour deterioration, and lots of other big words that Joe doesn't understand. They also learn about robotic arms, and noses that operate on artificial intelligence. Welcome Things People Brew, where this week it's all about brewing beer (see what we did there?). Today, we have left our usual studio to go and meet the Willy Wonka of beer making at his set up in Waterloo. His name is AJ, and he's here to tell us everything we;'ve ever wanted to ask about beer, and to share some of his weird and wonderful concoctions, featuring pineapple, glitter and sometimes crickets (as in Jimmeny!). We learn a lot about yeast, hops, and Joe gets pretty tipsy again. Enjoy! This episode is proudly sponsored by BrewDog Punk IPA. We are in Bristol for another Things People Did, and our guest this week is comedian and Tik Tok sensation, Abi Clarke. Abi has had quite the journey, from work experience at a hairdressers (where they basically kept her in a cupboard), to making it on the big screen as an extra in Poldark, where she mostly just flirted with 'the hottest man alive' whilst dressed in a horrendous wig. She also invented something called 'dog of the week' and she teaches Joe how to improv as a welsh chimney sweep. It's a wild ride. We love Abi - go see her on tour! China's BrewDog is coming, thanks to a partnership with Budweiser! Yes, the brand that seemed disgusted by big beer, has teamed up for a big bite of the Asian continent. By partnering with Budweiser China, they'll have access to a much bigger network. This news comes as BrewDog seems to be planning for an IPO sometime in the coming years. If they can increase the distribution well over the current 1% of sales, investors would surely be happy.
Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
In this week’s episode, we’re talking all about brewing IPAs with Pipeline Brewing Co’s Jonny Cooper. There’s not a shadow of a doubt that the craft beer revolution owes much of its success and prominence due to the humble India Pale Ale. As we all know through historians and beer writers, the passage to India back in the 18th century was a lengthy excursion, giving the beer ample opportunity to change in its qualities while stored in wood for prolonged periods. But there’s no denying that the humble IPA has long since been on an equally unparalleled voyage ever since. Rescued from closure in the 1960’s, Anchor Brewery - arguably one of American’s first craft breweries of the modern era - released Liberty Ale in 1975 and was the archetype for the modern day IPA. America’s love of extravagant flavours and hop-bills of biblical proportions counteracted the myriad of bland lagers offered from the same handful of multinational drinks corporations. Taking inspiration from English brewers such as Fullers, Smith & Turner breweries such as Sierra Nevada, Goose Island and Stone drove the IPA craze to dizzy new heights, showing us Brits what brewers could really do when unleashed with hops flowers and pellets. Whereas we gave the USA the template for the IPA, our Stateside cousins gave us Cascade, Chinook and the revered Citra. In an Atlantic rivalry that can only be matched by The Beatles and The Beach Boys, it wasn’t long before British brewers were taking American hops and smashing out punchy IPAs such as Jaipur, Gamma Ray, Cannonball and Punk IPA. And thus the cycle continues. When juicy, hazy IPAs came onto the scene several years back, Manchester’s Cloudwater Brew Co rode the crest of the wave producing bigger, bolder, fruiter IPAs - setting a new precedent for the capabilities of hop infused beers in this country. Most contemporary breweries of notoriety have largely gained their success off the back of a flagship IPA. (I’ve yet to meet a brewer who does not have several variations in their core range and plenty more in their back catalogue). The types of IPA are endless… check out this article by Matthew Curtis written for Mash Marketing about IPA styles and how a Session IPA is an oxymoron: https://www.mash.marketing/ipa IPAs sound easier to brew than they actually are… the good ones at least! One brewer who is making waves in the world of IPAs right now is Cornwall based brewery, Pipeline Brewing Co. Should their beers be placed in a blind tasting lineup with the usual suspects, it would be hard to tell the real Keyser Soze apart: they’re that good. There’s lots to be learned from Jonny - a passionate brewer with an insatiable thirst for juicy IPAs. I would highly recommend getting hold of his beers to taste and see for yourself that he certainly knows his stuff when it comes to brewing. --- BREWERY SHOUTOUTS Fierce & Noble are based a Bristol based brewery defined by independence, committed to brewing modern, seasonal beer, with a fierce intuition that makes them unemployable anywhere else. This episode I cheers to Robert Kitambala. He passed away recently. We were co-workers on the Ottawa LRT project. An article has surfaced from The Ottawa Citizen talking about a man who lost everything because of the Ottawa LRT project. Музыка — The Eyeberries. Craft Brew News 09/27/19(courtesy of BrewBound – www.brewbound.com)BrewDog USA on Track to Double Sales in 2019Scottish craft brewers BrewDog are on pace to double its U.S. business this year.In an email to BrewDog USA wholesalers, chief revenue officer Adam Lambert reported that the company’s depletions (sales to retailers) increased 95% through the first eight months of the year. The company has also sold more than 320,000 case equivalents.BrewDog’s U.S. home, Ohio, where it built a 100,000 sq. ft. production facility, accounts for 55% of its domestic business, and in-state sales are growing at a rate of 80%.Sales of core IPAs Elvis Juice and Hazy Jane are up 104% and 95%, respectively, year-to-date. Grapefruit-infused Elvis Juice now represents nearly half (49%) of BrewDog USA’s business, while New England-style IPA Hazy Jane makes up 22% of its business. Sales of BrewDog’s flagship Punk IPA, which accounts for 8% of the company’s business, are flat.Lambert noted that 16 oz. cans continue to drive BrewDog’s total growth and represent 9% of its total business. In 2020, BrewDog is projecting its upward sales trajectory to continue, as Lambert told wholesalers that the company’s goal is to once again double its business.Weyerbacher Reorganization Plan Shows Private Investor Group Backed Out, Internal Investors InThe private investment group announced as a majority investor in Weyerbacher Brewing Company this past April has backed out of the deal, the brewery’s chief operating officer, Josh Lampe, told Brewbound.Instead, the Easton, Pennsylvania-based craft brewery has turned to a group of seven individuals and two trusts to invest $50,000 in exchange for shares in the business, according to a reorganization plan filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Pennsylvania’s Eastern District.1518 Holdings abandoned plans to buy a majority stake in Weyerbacher, a 24-year-old craft brewery that sold as many as 19,543 barrels at its most recent peak in 2014, shortly after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April, Lampe said.“We’ve been going at it on our own, and we’ve got a lot of beer coming out and are making headway with getting everything back in stock, which is a good thing,” he added.Weyerbacher also owes $1.9 million to other creditors, but those claims are unsecured and the company plans to pay back a total of $186,000 according to the reorganization plan.Lampe said there have been no layoffs at Weyerbacher since the company laid off two salespeople in February. The company has no plans to close its retail locations in Easton, where it operates a 30,000-barrel production brewery and taproom, or in New Hope, where it opened a stand earlier this year inside a food hall and local market.Lampe said “We’re still working through our issues, but my main focus is the future of the company and making sure that we are able to keep putting out great beer,”.Texas Brewers Report Boost from Beer-To-Go Sales LegalizationEighteen days after Texas’ new beer-to-go law went into effect, manufacturing brewers are reporting high levels of consumer enthusiasm for the opportunity to buy and take home packaged beers from taprooms. After passing through the Texas Legislature in the spring and being signed by the governor in June, the law allowing the state’s licensed manufacturing breweries to sell beer to-go went into effect on September 1. Prior to the change, only brewers holding brewpub licenses that produced fewer than 10,000 barrels could sell patrons beer for off-premise consumption. The new law allows customers to purchase up to one case of 12 oz. cans (288 oz.) per brewery visit daily.Peticolas Brewing Company founder Michael Peticolas said sales during the two weeks since the change in the law were the best in the 8-year-old Dallas-based beer company’s history. Peticolas, an attorney turned brewer, was a vocal proponent of changing the law.“It was a huge team effort to get this thing from concept to actually opening up on September 1, which ultimately is the single biggest day we’ve ever had in our history,” he said.Austin Beerworks co-founder Adam DeBower told Brewbound in an email that the passage shows that with “a well-thought-out and executed game plan, normal people can in fact still move the needle on the laws that govern our lives.”Truly Hard Seltzer Named Official Hard Seltzer of the NHLThe Boston Beer Company today announced it has inked a five-year deal for Truly Hard Seltzer to be the “official hard seltzer” of the National Hockey League. The agreement is Boston Beer’s first national sports league partnership. The sponsorship will begin at the start of the 2019-2020 season on October 2, and will give the brand exposure both through broadcasts and stadiums during the regular season, Stanley Cup Playoffs, and Stanley Cup Final. Truly will also sponsor the Truly Hard Seltzer NHL PreGame during the 2020 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic as well as the 2020 NHL Stadium Series.NHL chief business officer and executive vice president Keith Wachtel said in a press release “As the beer category continues to evolve, we’re thrilled to become the first national sports league partner of The Boston Beer Company,”. “With a thriving business across multiple categories, they are an ideal partner to engage with our avid fan base. We’re excited to develop fun and unique activations across their portfolio of brands.”In December 2017, Boston Beer and the Boston Red Sox announced a multi-year agreement to make Samuel Adams “the official beer of the Boston Red Sox.”Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com** Check out Upcoming Craft Beer Weekends ** Hampton, NHThe Victoria Inn Bed & Breakfast and PavilionCraft Beer Weekend - Dates: October 25-27, 2019Friday - Food / Beer Pairing at Inn / Q&A Brewer's PanelSaturday - Beer Bus takes you to local Breweries/DinnerSunday - Kegs N Eggs and BeerMosasAvailability: Limited - Book NOW!http://www.thevictoriainn.com/6th-annual-craft-beer-storm-weekend-2019/If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC Marathon“32K In 64 days” - I signed up for the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
On the Hop Forward Podcast, we travel to Notting Hill, London, to meet Nick Dolan and Tim Peyton from independent bottle shop Real Ale Ltd. Having been running shops across London for 14 years, Nick and the team have been championing locally brewed, high quality beers ever since and were one of the first shops to stock Punk IPA in can, which - at the time - seemed like a novel idea. It’s hard to imagine as little as 6 years ago where flavour profiles, packaging formats and the microbrewery boom would take British beer, let alone running shops back when the term ‘real ale’ was the descriptor for what we now call ‘craft beer’. Founder Nick Dolan has had a front seat whilst navigating the landscape since the early days of driving across the country in his van picking up bottle conditioned beers direct from the brewer, to now sourcing and supplying beer for one of the UK’s largest retailers, Marks & Spencer. In this episode, we tackle a variety of topics - ranging from quality, branding, pricing and supermarkets, right through to the future of the beer industry. Make sure you tune in to this fantastic episode.
Craft Brew News – 06/28/2019(Courtesy of Brewbound.com)US Supreme Court Strikes Down Tennessee Residency RequirementSix months after hearing oral arguments in a constitutional challenge to Tennessee’s two-year residency requirement for obtaining a retail liquor license, the United States Supreme Court yesterday struck down a controversial stipulation that had prevented out of state retailers from setting up shop in the Volunteer State. In that case, chain alcohol retailer Total Wine, along with Doug and Mary Ketchum, who bought a mom-and-pop liquor store in 2016 after moving to Memphis from Utah, challenged the two-year residency requirement, which they said amounted to economic protectionism. The United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit sided with Total Wine and the Ketchums, ruling that the residency requirement violated the Constitution and the 21st Amendment’s dormant Commerce Clause, which was established to prevent states from engaging in economic protectionism. In writing his majority opinion, issued yesterday, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito deemed Tennessee’s two-year residency requirement for retail license applicants unconstitutional because it “blatantly favors the state’s residents and has little relationship to public health and safety.”The high court added that the 10-year residency requirement for license renewals and a provision blocking publicly traded corporations from operating liquor stores in the state “are so plainly based on unalloyed protectionism that neither the Association nor the state is willing to come to their defense.”Deschutes Begins Selling Canned Water ** Check out Episode # 42 - Deschutes BrewMaster Brian Faivre **In an effort to cut down on single-use plastic water bottles, Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery has begun canning drinking water, according to the company’s blog.Deschutes, the 10th largest Brewers Association-defined craft brewery, said its canned water would be available to purchase this summer at events throughout central Oregon, as well as Tumalo Creek Kayak and Canoe’s locations in Bend, Sunriver and Riverbend.Bell’s Two Hearted Ale Named Top Beer by AHAFor the third consecutive year, Bell’s Brewery’s Two Hearted Ale is the top-ranked beer in the U.S. according to the American Homebrewers Association’s (AHA) Zymurgy magazine. The Best Beers in America list, now in its 17th year, is populated by a survey of AHA members. Rounding out the top five, in order, were Russian River’s Pliny the Elder, Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale, Founders Brewing’s KBS and The Alchemist’s Heady Topper.“Receiving this honor once, twice even was incredible. But a third time? I am speechless and incredibly thankful to the homebrewing community and everyone who has helped make this beer what it is today,” Bell’s founder Larry Bell said in a press release.Additionally, AHA members named Bell’s the top brewery in the U.S., followed by Founders, Russian River, Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head.BrewDog Loses Sex Discrimination LawsuitBrewDog’s attempt to draw attention to the gender wage gap ended with a man successfully suing the Scottish craft brewery for sexual discrimination, according to the Independent.Thomas Bower filed a lawsuit against BrewDog after one the brewery’s bartenders refused to sell him a discounted Punk IPA, rebranded Pink IPA, in March 2018 unless the man identified as a woman.Bower claimed that he felt “forced’ into identifying as a woman so he could buy the discounted beer. So he sued the company claiming “direct discrimination and breach of the Equality Act 2010,” the outlet reported.District Judge Phillips agreed with Bower, ruling that the man had been “directly discriminated against” by BrewDog due to his gender.“The fact that by identifying as female he was still able to purchase a Pink IPA makes no difference,” Phillips added. “I accept what Dr. Bower says, namely that identifying as female was the only way he could purchase a Pink IPA at a cost of £4.”According to Vice, Bower was awarded $1,254 in damages, which he pledged to donate to charity (minus court fees).Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? A very different and in-depth bonus episode for you this week. In March 2018 Brewdog created a big promotion, a clarion call to end the discrimination of gender pay inequality. Pink IPA was launched (Punk IPA in a pink bottle) with 20% off for women. The promotion coincided with International Women's Day. Upset by this, Tom Bower confirmed the promotion was real, then took Brewdog to court claiming sex discrimination. He won the case and donated his £1000 (less costs) to charity. In this episode Rob talks to Tom and tries to understand why he went through it all, then Jo joins Rob to give her opinion on the interview. Lets just say - she was not happy. Not. At. All.

We popped into The Red Lion www.whatpub.com/pubs/OXF/KN-7/red-lion-kidlington in Kidlington, for a couple of beers before the game. Ember Inns Pale Ale www.emberinns.co.uk/our-ale and the ever delightful BrewDog’s Punk IPA www.brewdog.com/beer/headliners/punk-ipa Once back in town a couple of liveners in the King’s Arms www.whatpub.com/pubs/BES/220/kings-arms-houghton-regis and a surprise visit of the Flying Ants https://my.lemonrock.com/flyingants1 Opening track: "Don't Quote Me On That" by Madness www.madness.co.uk Contact us via Twitter: @StGeorgesBlues1 or email: stgeorgesbluesexperience@gmail.com
A ridiculously jam packed post-AGM podcast for you today! On this show: We catch all the 'business news' from AGM. We've a chat about quality issues with Punk IPA. Wattie is back on the voicemail. We've TWO competitions to tell you about. We're joined by Ben Press (BrewdogBen) from Brewdog. And we've a frankly silly amount of other interesting stories to tell you about!
In this episode we sat down with Oli from Brewdog Edinburgh as he talked us through some beer and food pairings. This round features Punk IPA and pepperoni.
So it turns out BrewDog’s Punk IPA is not a session ale … this may explain why this month’s tech segment in which Mike & Rob explore the complex mysterious world of Cookies and Caches turns into a delightfully rambling adventure that would be right at home in any pub or bar anywhere in the world. Ever wondered if the inventor of the World Wide Web sent saucy snapchats? How about the importance of the humble Cookie in avoiding embarrassing online checkout moments. We’ve got it all and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wdawkt/message

Lucy drinks a Moor 'Raw' bitter beer and Northern Monk 'Bombay Dazzler' Witbier and Ben is on Brewdog's 'Ace of Equinox' session IPA and Punk IPA.

Have you heard of DIY Dog yet?BrewDog (www.BrewDog.com) is a brewery in The Unighted Kingdom you may have heard about; they have a popular TV show on Esquire called Brew Dogs, on which they travel the United States trying local beers, and their beers can be found around here every so often. (The consumers I went to yesterday didn't have any in stock, but I've gotten them there before).Read more about DIY Dog and BrewDog by clicking on this post. The Most Taps in HamburgIn this episode, we also talk to the owner of The Burg in The Village of Hamburg. Only open for a few short months now, The Burg boasts Hamburg's largest tap list. When I was there, I had a Dogfish Head Higher Math (bottled), and tried a few Sam Adams beers I didn't even know existed.Jeremy and his staff are looking to bring a little bit of the city scene into The Village wih clean, modern bar featuring drinks, food, and music. See more about The Burg by clicking on this post. You can even buy homebrewing kits to make some of their Punk IPA, the World Beer Awards' 2015 Best UK IPA winner, here. But before you click and purchase, BrewDog has done something unprecedented: they've just released a FREE PDF of all of their recipes. They've even scaled them for homebrewers. The PDF is not only HUGE (with 215 recipes), but it's eally beautiful. It also includes a quick homebrewing primer in the beginning to help you along.(All of the links in this post will bring you to BrewDog's website. I thought about just posting the file for you to grab as they're not asking anything in return, but I thought it would be better if you got it from them and took a look around their site.)Want a printed version of the book?Well, BrewDog is the fastest growing brewery in The UK (Scotland to be precice) partly because they're "crowd funding" their operations. You can purchase shares in BrewDog from their website, and as a new investor (or with any additional share purchase for current investors), you will recieve a printed version of the same book.Either way, it looks like the homebrew stores are about to get hit up with some grain orders!Check Out The BurgThe Burg is one of Hamburg's newest establishments and they sport 24 taps! One of the owners sat down with me to talk about what he hopes to do with the well-placed bar and night spot. Listen to the interview, find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/The-Burg-436730273201625/And check out these photos of their tap list on the night I went (Certainly different by now and probably every time you go in!).[googlemaps https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d2931.4159091140864!2d-78.84168068453238!3d42.71608697916461!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x89d31b52a0ff20a1%3A0x58d775745d3d4c1d!2sTHE+BURG!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1456926405792&w=600&h=450] See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Our original Punk IPA episode is our most notorious for many reasons. Maybe it was that we suggested Brewdog were from Edinburgh. Maybe it was our lack of appreciation for the marketing at the time. Maybe it was Mark’s Scottish accent. Maybe it was that we just weren’t ready to drink the beer. For […]
Beer for punks!
