Problem-solving the crises of the modern world is often characterized by an economy and architecture of exploitation and instrumentalization, viewing relationships as transactional, efficient, and calculative. But this sort of thinking leaves a remainder of emptiness.Finding hope in a time of crises requires a more human work of covenant and commitment. Based in agrarian principles of stability, place, connection, dependence, interwoven relatedness, and a rooted economy, we can find hope in “Love's Braided Dance” of telling the truth, keeping our promises, showing mercy, and bearing with one another. In this episode, Evan Rosa welcomes Norman Wirzba, the Gilbert T. Rowe Distinguished Professor of Christian Theology at Duke Divinity School, to discuss his recent book Love's Braided Dance: Hope in a Time of Crisis.Together they discuss love and hope through the agrarian principles that acknowledge our physiology and materiality; how the crises of the moment boil down to one factor: whether young people want to have kids of their own; God's love as erotic and how that impacts our sense of self-worth; the “sympathetic attunement” that comes from being loved by a community, a place, and a land; transactional versus covenantal relationships; the meaning of giving and receiving forgiveness in an economy of mercy; and finally the difficult truth that transformation or moral perfection can never replace reconciliation.About Norman WirzbaNorman Wirzba is the Gilbert T. Al Roxburgh and Jenny Sinclair talk with Bill Cavanaugh about how, as Christians, we might understand the shifting and disruption of our times. Bill proposes that rather than reading the signs through the lens of secularisation, we should think in terms of “the migration of the holy”. He contends that the holy has migrated to the immanent categories of contemporary life in, for example, our captivity by money, consumerism, or the big tech oligarchs. In doing so, he gives us a helpful way of engaging the unravelling and understanding the nature of our modern “Egypt”.  William T. Cavanaugh is Professor of Catholic Studies and Director of the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University in Chicago. A widely-published theologian specialising in political theology and ecclesiology, he is the recipient of the 2023 Cortelyou-Lowery Award. Heavily influenced by working in the slums of Santiago, Chile under the military dictatorship, his work involves mentoring and support for under-resourced scholars and practitioners across the Global South. His work is concerned with the social implications of Catholic social doctrine and the Church's social and political presence in situations of violence and economic injustice. - Links -For Alan J Roxburgh:http://alanroxburgh.com/abouthttps://www.themissionalnetwork.com/author/alan-roxburgh/https://journalofmissionalpractice.com/alan-roxburghTwitter: https://twitter.com/alanjroxburgh?lang=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/alan.roxburgh.127/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thecommonsnetworkJoining God in the Great Unraveling https://www.amazon.ca/Joining-God-Great-Unraveling-Learned/dp/1725288508/ref=sr_1_Leadership, God's Agency and Disruptions https://www.amazon.ca/Leadership-Gods-Agency-Disruptions-Confronting/dp/1725271745/refJoining God, Remaking Church, Changing the World: The New Shape of the Church in Our Time https://www.amazon.ca/Joining-Remaking-Church-Changing-World/dp/0819232114/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2NHGW8KB7L0SQ&keywords=Alan+J+Roxburgh&qid=1687098960&s=books&sprefix=alan+j+roxburgh%2Cstripbooks%2C130&sr=1-3For Jenny Sinclair:Website: https://togetherforthecommongood.co.uk/from-jenny-sinclairLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenny-sinclair-0589783b/Twitter: https://twitter.com/T4CGFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TogetherForTheCommonGoodUKInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/t4cg_insta/For William T Cavanaugh:https://las.depaul.edu/academics/catholic-studies/faculty/Pages/william-cavanaugh.aspxTorture and Eucharist (1998)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Torture-Eucharist-Theology-Challenges-Contemporary/dp/0631211993The Myth of Religious Violence (2009)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Myth-Religious-Violence-Ideology-Conflict/dp/0195385047/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=VvDsF&content-id=amzn1.sym.3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_p=3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_r=260-3097777-8583156&pd_rd_wg=T3BgMigrations of the Holy: Theologies of State and Church (2011)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Migrations-Holy-Political-Meaning-Church/dp/0802866093/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=VvDsF&content-id=amzn1.sym.3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_p=3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_r=260-3097777-8583156&pd_rd_wg=T3BgzField Hospital: The Church's Engagement with a Wounded World (2016)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Field-Hospital-Churchs-Engagement-Wounded/dp/0802872972/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=Xoyww&content-id=amzn1.sym.3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_p=3413293e-3815-4359-96ba-1ec5110e0b30&pf_rd_r=260-3097777-8583156&pd_rd_wg=njOjThe Uses of Idolatry (forthcoming, Oxford UP, 2024)https://www.amazon.co.uk/Uses-Idolatry-William-T-Cavanaugh/dp/0197679056 Get full access to Leaving Egypt at leavingegyptpodcast.substack.com/subscribe

When World War I began, the famed historian, sociologist, and civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois was at the height of his influence. When the United States entered the war, he encouraged African Americans to “close ranks” and support the Allied cause. Tasked with writing a definitive history of the African American soldier in World War I, Du Bois ultimately came to be haunted by his support for the war. The manuscript for that project remains unpublished. To discuss Du Bois and World War I, the World War I Podcast hosted Dr. Chad L. Williams, author of The Wounded World: W.E.B. School boards and state governments have been locked in intense debates over what counts as history and whose history ought to be taught. Many of these wrestles orbit around events and cultural beliefs that the pragmatist philosopher Cornel West might refer to as “catastrophes.”Some voices are eager to bury, ignore, or sterilize many of the truly horrendous deeds that have happened in the United States. Slavery. Segregation. Jim Crow. Genocide. The exploitation of workers. And the list goes on.This inability to process the pain, guilt, or shame many of these events provoke in people is, arguably, a major contributing factor to the polarization, dehumanization, and political corrosiveness we encounter in both the national discourse and our local communities. Brad Elliott Stone and Jacob Goodson believe the answer can be found in building beloved community. They draw from the philosophies of Josiah Royce, Martin Luther King Jr, Cornel West, and William James. In their new book, Building Beloved Community in a Wounded World, they argue for ways in which we can heal the wounds inflicted on all of us by racism and economic injustices, both past and present. Here are just a few of the questions considered throughout the conversation.Should building beloved community be focused locally, nationally, or globally? What does it take to effectively respond to the cries of the wounded? And, how can communities better work through the emotional pain of past wrongs?Brad Elliott Stone is Professor of Philosophy and Associate Dean in the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.Jacob L. Many of us think that we know all there is to know about W.E.B Du Bois was the early 20th century's most significant thinker, writer, and philosopher of the U.S. civil rights movement. He saw an extraordinary opportunity during World War 1 to advance the rights of black Americans. He encouraged them to “close ranks” and support the Allied cause in World War 1, enlisting to fight in the war. This decision would haunt him for the rest of his life. Seeking both intellectual clarity and personal atonement, for over two decades, Du Bois attempted to write the definitive history of black participation in World War 1. His book, however, remained unpublished. Today's guest is Chad Williams, author of “The Wounded World,” an account of Du Bois's efforts to complete what would have been one of his most significant works of history. He reveals Du Bois's struggles to reckon with both the history and troubling memory of the war, along with the broader meanings of race and democracy for black people in the 20th century. He also addresses larger questions of why lynchings against black Americans spiked following the war. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3101278/advertisement

In 1917, the most prominent spokesperson for African Americans, W.E.B. DuBois, shocked many when he threw his support behind enthusiastic and patriotic participation in World War I. He thought it was the key to expanding rights and treatment for African Americans. He was only to be later disappointed by the treatment of soldiers in France, the treatment of veterans when they came home, and the revision of history after the war to downplay accomplishments of African American soldiers. He struggled to write a book but could never come to terms with his own role in World War I and what came after. We discuss the life and legacy of the author and activist W.E.B. DuBois with Chad L. W. E. B Du Bois is best known for his seminal collection of essays on the African-American experience, The Souls of Black Folk, and his magnum opus, Black Reconstruction in America, which reframed the story of freed slaves in the Civil War and the brief window of political promise that followed. Du Bois is less remembered for his support for America's entry into the First World War, an endorsement that surprised many of his Black and radical allies. Moreover, he pushed for African Americans to join the ranks, in the hopes of accelerating the fight for freedom at home. He would soon regret his decision, and he spent the next two decades of his life grappling with the complex legacy of the war, and African Americans' experience of it. As the historian Chad Williams puts it, this manuscript—called The Black Man and the Wounded World—was “Du Bois's most significant work to never reach the public,” and the struggle to write it would irrevocably shape his politics. When W. E. B. Du Bois, believing in the possibility of full citizenship and democratic change, encouraged African Americans to "close ranks" and support the Allied cause in World War I, he made a decision that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Seeking both intellectual clarity and personal atonement, for more than two decades Du Bois attempted to write the definitive history of Black participation in World War I. His book, however, remained unfinished.  In The Wounded World: W. E. B. Du Bois and the First World War (FSG, 2023), Chad Williams offers the dramatic account of Du Bois's failed efforts to complete what would have been one of his most significant works. The surprising story of this unpublished book offers new insight into Du Bois's struggles to reckon with both the history and the troubling memory of the war, along with the broader meanings of race and democracy for Black people in the twentieth century. Drawing on a broad range of sources, most notably Du Bois's unpublished manuscript and research materials, Williams tells a sweeping story of hope, betrayal, disillusionment, and transformation, setting into motion a fresh understanding of the life and mind of arguably the most significant scholar-activist in African American history. In uncovering what happened to Du Bois's largely forgotten book, Williams offers a captivating reminder of the importance of World War I, why it mattered to Du Bois, and why it continues to matter today. During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're discussing all things anthropomorphic – which in the theological realm involves the oft feeble attempt to use human context and metaphor to describe what is divine and transcendent. And we're doing so to responsibly frame the thesis that our Creator Redeemer is not uniformly angry or solemn but instead expresses sheer delight within the perfect Trinitarian “perichoresis” kind of relationship that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit enjoy with each other, and also with us - His prone to wander people. If you grew up like me with the wrong assumption that the Bible is an altogether somber rulebook and our Savior is an unsmiling grump, then today's episode might just help you understand how orthodox Christianity and the concept of a smiling Savior are not mutually exclusive! In this episode, Eric and Sara Joy talk with Pastor Cynthia Wallace about how the Oasis Farm and Fishery was implemented and is operating out of Bible Center Church in the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Originally begun as an educational initiative to help families learn how to eat and cook healthier, the program has evolved into growing food for the local community. This work began as the church gained a deeper understanding of the food insecurity, or lack of access to food, that so many of the local neighborhood residents are facing. Pastor Cynthia reminds us that listening to God and your neighbors is a vital part of recognizing what needs the local church is called to fulfill in the community. The process can be slow and full of small steps, but God has been faithful to expand the work of Bible Center Church in a well-timed and manageable way. The Oasis Farm and Fishery has been in operation for almost nine years, expanding to include gardening classes, cooking classes, farm stands, and vegetable box delivery in the community.Eric and Sara Joy also speak with a couple of field guides who provide professional research expertise to expand upon the social and economic implications of food insecurity in our communities. Both Dr. Stephanie Boddie of Baylor University and Dr. Norman Wirzba of Duke University help us better understand the extent of how poor access to healthy food in our communities is detrimental to our well-being and contrary to the way God designed us to eat and enjoy food. Each of these field guides provides inspiring challenges to churches to be a light of the Gospel in their communities through growing and enjoying food together.Episode ContributorsCynthia Wallace is the Executive Pastor of Bible Center Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is also the Executive Director of the Oasis Project, which includes the Oasis Farm and Fishery. Dr. Stephanie Clintonia Boddie is Assistant Professor of Church and Community Ministries with affiliations at the Diana R. This is the keynote interview for AllCreation's Spring 2022 edition, "Dominionism: Exploring religious relationships with other life," guest edited by Rev. Dr. Dan De Leon. Dan speaks here with Dr. Norman Wirzba about Genesis 1:26, the context it was written in, and how knowing all that changes the modern Christian perspective. "And God said, 'Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.'" (Genesis 1:26)About Dr. WirzbaDr. Norman Wirzba is the Gilbert T. Rowe Distinguished Professor of Christian Theology and Senior Fellow at the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke Divinity School. Dr. Wirzba's research and teaching interests are at the intersections of theology, philosophy, ecology, and agrarian and environmental studies. He lectures frequently in Canada, the United States, and Europe. His research is centered on a recovery of the doctrine of creation and a restatement of humanity in terms of its creaturely life. He is currently the director of a multi-year, projected entitled “Facing the Anthropocene” where he works with an international team of scholars to rethink several academic disciplines in light of challenges like climate change, food insecurity, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, species extinction, and the built environment. Visit NormanWirzba.com for more. Written WorksDr. Wirzba has published and edited numerous books, the latest of which is This Sacred Life: Humanity's Place in a Wounded World. Program 00:02 Dan's Intro  01:57 Welcome Dr. Wirzba 02:37 Dr. Wirzba self-introduction, "It doesn't seem there could be a more important conversation than how to live together..." 08:50 Scripture conversation begins -- Genesis I: "I give you Dominion" 16:45 Understanding the context of the language is very helpful; some biblical metaphors can now be made literal  20:20 "God created us for Intimacy with the Land” 28:00 Distinction between idolatry and iconic perception 34:55 Repositioning of our perspective; What is “Nature” and what is “Creation” 42:40 “The Gospel being for all creatures” 44:40 “Jesus as creator”  51:25 "How to pray", re: The Lord's Prayer and “Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven”. You write that in order to make that real we must restore relationships with the actual land on which people live… To make this sacred prayer realized, what are some practical ways we can restore relationships with the actual land on which we live? 56:00 re: Awakening & Connecting to other Life, Metanoia: a change of heart and direction, and Purification: giving one another the ability to see God's creatures -- I hear that in you saying we need to have time for Metanoia. "What was your metanoia?" References Dr. Seyyed Nasr lecture, 2009 From Nature to Creation - Norman Wirzba book This Sacred Life - Norman Wizba book The Gerasene demoniac QuotesIt doesn't seem that there could be a more important question than to figure out how to live well, in our places, with each other. How can we do this to our world? How can we be damaging it so badly?Scripture assumes a God who loves the world… And the question for me is: how can we say we worship a God who loves the world but not give our love to the world at the same time? These are Agrarian people. As a farm kid, the first thing you know is that… you don't ever presume to do with your land or your animals whatever you want… You know that as a farmer you are only successful in so far as your animals are healthy and your land, your soil, is fertile. Which means that good farmers are always very attentive to the needs of the land, to the needs of plants, to the needs of their animals… It's the realization that you can't possibly succeed if the world that feeds you does not do well at the same time.Subduing means learning to come alongside fellow creatures so that in taking care of their needs you also take care of your own.We are all together sharers in this divine breath that animates Ground into the diversity of Creatures that we see.God understands that apart from soil, plant, and animal life, we can't possibly survive, we can't possibly thrive, and we can't possibly be happy. The first creatures that are presented to “the Adám,” as someone to help them in their loneliness, are animals.Let's go to the second creation story. We forget about the Garden. The image you get there is the first human being, Adam, being animated out of soil. God is the first gardener. We are made to feel connection with soil, plants, animals, and people, because those are all the places where God is active.Scripture affirms a position in which God is present to creatures all of the time, desiring for them to live into the fullness of their lives. It doesn't make sense to talk about human flourishing if everything (humans) need, in the form of water, and air, and food, if it doesn't flourish at the same time. All things came into being through His word. When you're living the life God wants you to, animated by this loving power, there is no better life.I think the first thing to do is for people just to get outside, and: Notice. Look. Pay Attention. Smell. Feel. Touch. Grieve. The thing to start is just to try to calm down and center yourself in your neighborhood.Children can be our teachers, too. ###############Thanks for listening. How to Determine What You Actually Believe About Abortion

Does life really begin at conception? Is there a moment in the womb when a fetus becomes human? Are there times when abortion is necessary? Many of us have found ourselves asking these questions, but the answers can feel challenging to find. On today's episode of "Problematic Women," we explain what resources and tools we have found useful to form our own views and opinions on abortion. Taking the time to study human DNA, reading personal stories of those who have had abortions, and listening to the arguments of those who debate the issue of abortion professionally are all helpful tools to determine your own views on life and abortion. And knowing the arguments on both sides will also help you talk about the issue of abortion with those who think differently than you. Here are seven resources that have helped us determine our views on abortion: Scott Klusendorf's SLED argument.“Created to Live: Becoming the Answer for an Abortion-Free Community,” by Cathy Harris.Live Action video: “Meet Baby Olivia.”“Fighting for Life: Becoming a Force for Change in a Wounded World," by Lila Rose."Chemical Abortion: A Review," by Melanie Israel."The Daily Signal Podcast" interview with abortion survivor Gianna Jessen."The Points of Proof for Life: Scientific," by Brian Fisher.Plus, if you want to send a birthday card to WWII Veteran Bettie, follow this link for all the information. Our Lady Comes to a Wounded World . . . Our Lady of Lourdes Today, the Shrine was given a gift from heaven, flowers for Our Lady. Gifts to Our Lady are normally more than a simple gift. A single act of kindness directed to Our Lady, often touches other people as well. Whatever is given to Our Lady normally is more than the givers' intention. Fr. de Montfort speaks of this when we do things for Our Lady. Interestingly, someone once asked Fr. de Montfort, why don't you do something for God rather than Our Lady? His response? If I do something for God, He gets a very little thing. This is not a bad thing. In fact, it is a good thing. But the question is not whether it is good or bad, but rather can I give something to God that is even better? That is the power of doing something . . . for Our Lady. When I perform an act of kindness for Our Lady . . . she receives it (however imperfect the kindness is) with a grateful heart. When we honor her, she understands we are honoring all things God has done in her . . . and through her. We honor her, including the crown God gave to her. . . the Word made flesh. As she receives our gift of kindness . . . and the honor God has given her, she raises her head and praises God. What does God get from our kindness to Our Lady? God gets the thanksgiving and praises of Our Lady! That is much bigger . . . and much better than the little gift we give. Hear more about this gift to Our Lady on this day. Today is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. We honor Our Lady's visit to St. Bernadette. But she does more than visit her. She comes to a wounded world and brings a touch of grace. Hear the importance of this feast day. Listen to this Meditation Media.

The holidays are supposed to be festive but so many people get depressed around this time. Sometimes the source of the anxiety is not recognizing the innate beauty within all of us and gives life its true meaning. Too many people base their success on what they see in social media despite the struggles of many to project a fake persona. If people take the time to realize life's simple pleasures, they could find the key to true happiness. This was how my conversation with Father Maurice Nkem Emelu started yet, it did not end there. We traveled down a long philosophical road on gauging art and how to truly appreciate beauty. If one looks at a beautiful picture and does not appreciate it, is that the fault of the artist or the observer? Can one recognize beauty in art if there is nothing within themselves to connect with it? And why do we strive to be beautiful to everyone when everyone cannot appreciate our uniqueness? And how do all of these concerns affect our relationship with God? Yes, this episode was deep. Hopefully, you can hear the beauty of its expression. Tune in to find out. ABOUT MY GUEST Father Maurice Nkem Emelu, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of digital media and communication at John Carroll University in the United States. The author of seven books, and over 700 blogs and professional articles, he provides robust cross-cultural educational programs through digital media. He is the host of EWTN's The Faith with Father Maurice and the host/executive producer of Word for a Wounded World teaching series, plus numerous other television and radio works. He holds a Ph.D. from Liverpool Hope University, UK, focusing on digital storytelling, media aesthetics and theology, among other academic degrees. God's creation is a direct reflection of God's glory, and Christians are called to be faithful stewards of the earth. While global issues of climate and environment can seem out of reach, our local communities give us space to learn and take action in small and large ways. How can we partner with our creator to build a better, more sustainable living environment? What simple, practical changes can we make to responsibly care for our local communities and our world?Chris and Eddie are joined by Dr. Norman Wirzba, the Gilbert T. Rowe Distinguished Professor of Christian Theology and Senior Fellow at the Kenan Institute of Ethics at Duke University. Wirzba's upcoming book, This Sacred Life: Humanity's Place in a Wounded World explores three central questions at the intersection of theology and ecology: Who are we? Where are we? What should we do? Wirzba acknowledges that the doctrine of creation is not simply the teaching about how the world began, and he views creation care as an act of honor to God. This episode discusses the realities of climate change as both an ideological and financial issue, the importance of God's covenant relationship with all of creation, and the limits of the natural world.Resources:Follow Dr. Norman Wirzba on the web:https://normanwirzba.com Preorder This Sacred Life: Humanity's Place in a Wounded World  hereFollow Dr. Norman Wirzba on social media:https://www.facebook.com/norman.wirzba https://twitter.com/NWirzba

Abortion sells the lie that the child in the womb is less than human, despite the biological evidence to the contrary.

"Cooking is a declaration of love ... food is God's love made delicious." Theologian Norman Wirzba reflects on the threats of our faulty logic of food and our disordered and disconnected relationship to eating and nourishment, and imagines a theology of food grounded in membership, gift, and hospitality. Interview with Matt Croasmun.Support For the Life of the World: Give to the Yale Center for Faith & CultureAbout Norman WirzbaNorman Wirzba is the Gilbert T. Rowe Distinguished Professor of Theology at Duke University. His teaching, research, and writing happens at the intersections of theology and philosophy, and agrarian and environmental studies. For more information visit his website at normanwirzba.com.Show NotesIntroductionFood and Faith: A Theology of Eating—a picture of what eating can be, connecting us to the world, to each other, to God.When it comes to eating in America these days, how are we doing?Anonymity and ignorance. We are disconnected from food, we're not encouraged to know where food comes from or how it came to be."Eat food, not too much, mostly vegetables."Good eating is not solely a matter of personal virtue or vice. It's part of a complicated system, agricultural strategy, and political process we're involved in.Food is central to human flourishing, but if it's only a market commodity, we end up with a faulty logic that drives a sinister food industry. You can only sell so much: therefore, preservativesIf food is primarily to be digested, we have foods that are, in principle, indigestible. It tastes good, and never makes you full. It's the perfect food commodity. The food system is developed to take advantage of you as a unit of consumption. What is eating for?Membership as a eucharistic mode for changing the way we conceive of food and the good. Eating is a daily reminder of our need.Fruits of the spirit that ought to animate our relation to membership.Mutual belonging (Willie Jennings, The Christian Imagination)How disconnection from the land leads to alienation and loneliness.Attention to geography and sources of life; how do we cultivate awareness and proper attention?Robin Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass—the White American presence has always been “this is not home.” Therefore, “The land we live on and are blessed by does not love us.” Think about what kind of compensation must follow to this kind of alienation. Racial components of agriculture and food. "You cannot tell the story of agriculture apart from the story of slavery.” Agricultural labor and the objection to embodiment.Embodiment and food.Essential work, abstraction from bodies, and disembodied labor."We don't want to know, because to have to know these things implicates us in how we shop for food."God creates a world in which creatures eat. What's communicated through a meal prepared for you? You matter.God invites us into hospitality, and food and eating can teach us that nurturing welcoming presence.Food as gift. Submitting oneself to "the grace of the world.” "Food is God's love made delicious.""Life has always proceeded by hospitality."“Eating and cooking … cause us to stop and say, ‘It's not all vicious. Maybe our living together can also be a celebration.'""All eating involves death.” How do you square the gift of food with the death it entails? The first virtue of humility—because I don't know, and because I understand vulnerability, I must live in a more humble, patient way. What does policy look like when it comes through the lens of humility, dependence, gift, and vulnerability? The story of a meal—its cultivating, growing, cooking, gathering, eating, enjoying, and nourishing. You can't homogenize people's experience of food.Sabbath, time, place: Slowing down to notice the goodness of the world God has given us. Thoughtfulness, intention, attention, presence, honoring each otherWho is invited to the table? Communal living, kinship, and community in a welcoming world. Abraham Heschel's “an opening for eternity in time."How can we honor the life that feeds us? Start simple. Soup and bread to celebrate the goodness of the world.

“I see clearly that the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the church as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds, heal the wounds … and you have to start from the ground up.” – Pope Francis, America: The National Catholic Review, September 2013 http://americamagazine.org/pope-interview In 2013, Pope Francis famously likened the church to a field hospital. Renowned theologian, William Cavanaugh, takes hold of this metaphor and explores the meaning of it in his latest book, ‘Field Hospital: The Church's Engagement with a Wounded World'. “I think in some senses, what Pope Francis is trying to do is to recapture the sense that you find in the earliest church where things are very decentralized,” Cavanaugh explains. “What you had was not very tightly institutionalized, but was more based on small communities of people taking care of each other's needs.” “It's a response to the kind of one-on-one, flesh-to-flesh encounter with another person who suffers.” In this episode of Life & Faith, we talk about how the church can operate as a ‘field hospital', and why it is important for the church to do so. --- SUBSCRIBE to our podcast: http://bit.ly/lifeandfaithpodcast JOIN US at this year's Richard Johnson Lecture with William Cavanaugh: http://www.richardjohnson.com.au
