#084: Dr. Shireen Rahimi is everything you expect and nothing you expect. She is a boundaries-breaking badass who bravely binds together all the things. She's a California-born Iranian-American freelance photographer and filmmaker. She's a PhD-toting environmental scientist and National Geographic explorer. She's a free diver, writer, artist to the core. And all of these facets shine brilliantly under her company, Light Palace Productions, where she creates poetic films that get people to care about the world around us. We are often told to focus on one thing. Find our niche. Home into one style and hone it. Do what we're best at. Or…. nah. Shireen is using her strengths as a scientist, her skills in commercial work, and her drive as an artist to be as bold of a conservation visual storyteller as possible. #081: Jo-Anne McArthur is the winner of this year's BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition with her beautiful image of a mother kangaroo with a joey in her pocket standing in the midst of a burned eucalyptus plantation.It's something that when you look at it, you can't help but start to put together a puzzle pieces of how we as humans impact the natural environment and how we impact the species that live on this planet alongside us.But… often we think of only the wild animals we effect, such as that kangaroo family. By far, one of the most important conversations that we can possibly have inside of conservation visual storytelling is that of racism and diversity inside of the conservation movement, and inside of visual storytelling.This conversation has never been more necessary than today. Because when it comes to primarily White-led movements like conservation and White-led fields like visual storytelling, it means that there's a very limited perspective that most people see. A very limited lens through which conservation stories are told. And it means a lot of voices are left out.Amy Marquis is willing to get into the trenches with us on this topic. #078: “How do you photograph whale culture?!” That's what one very esteemed photo editor asked Brian Skerry when he told her about his project. It's an important question. Culture difficult enough to photograph well when it comes to humans. #077: It's intimidating enough to tackle your very first conservation photography project. #074: There is some really exciting news rolling out in the wildlife photography world right now: the winners of the highly prestigious BigPicture Natural World Photography CompetitionTypically in nature photography competitions, it's men who sweep the wins. And no wonder. For a whole host of reasons, wildlife photography is still a very male-dominated area.But in the BigPicture competition, something unusual is playing out. Since the launch of the contest eight years ago, half of the Grand Prize winners have been women. A gender-equal split is most definitely not the norm. The competition is judged blind, so this equality is not contrived… but it is very purposefully assisted. The folks who manage BigPicture are focused on building equality and diversity in conservation-focused nature photography. It is part of the team's goal to bring more voices to the forefront, and allow more space for a broader range of views in this field.So when they noticed that there was a very low number of women entering this year's competition, they made some moves to bump up that number. Now, you might be asking yourself, why do we care?Why does it matter if the winner of a competition is a man, a woman, or a non-binary person? Shouldn't it just completely depend on the imagery?Well, actually, that's a big, big topic to unpack. It gets into significant systemic issues like sexism in photography and particularly in wildlife photography, in the types of imagery that typically tends to win, what that says about how we view nature, and how we are shaping the way that other people view nature.There's a whole lot that we actually need to unpack about this, and that's why I brought on today's guests to talk about it.Today we're talking with Suzi Eszterhas, who is jury chair of BigPicture, and Rhonda Rubinstein, whois the Creative Director at California Academy of Sciences, the entity that hosts the competition. And both Suzi and Rhonda are co-founders of BigPicture.We talk about why BigPicture puts so much emphasis on increasing the representation of women inside of this wildlife photography competition, why it matters, and what strategies are they employing in order to encourage women to enter.It's a big sticky topic. You may agree with some things, you may disagree with some things, but it is something that we need to have a conversation about. #073: If you've been curious about pushing your boundaries as a still photographer, and diving into the wide and wild world of filmmaking, then today's episode will totally be your cup of tea.Moving from still photography into video is an amazing way to challenge your creative mind and learn a whole plethora of new skills. #069: There is very little about conservation photography that's easy. Yes, it's full of joy, inspiration, reward, motivation… but that comes as a result of a lot of hard work.Part of that struggle is navigating our inner monologue, what goes on inside of our heads around creativity, around supposed-tos and shoulds, the self-doubt and self-criticism.The dialogue that sometimes we tell ourselves is not necessarily something that cares for our creative self. You might not suspect it, but this is actually an issue that can be genuinely problematic.While that is a kind and generous thing to do on the surface, being overly exuberant about donating your work is actually damaging both to professional photographers and conservation as a movement.My conservation photos, for the most part, are not free. #27: There are certain people in this field who I think of as true leaders, and not because they're sounding a cavalry charge or heading up the keynote at every event.It's because they focus on their own path with such clarity, creativity, boldness and determination that they inevitably find success. #26: Project burn-out is real. Sometimes it's a full-scale asteroid-hitting-Earth kind of burn out, and sometimes it's just that slow camp-fire-melting-into-embers kind of cool off. #020: Steven David Johnson is a professor of Visual and Communication Arts at Eastern Mennonite University University. At the time of this recording, he's on sabbatical. And what he's choosing to do with his time is absolutely blowing the minds of fellow conservation photographers.Steve is working on a project called Vernal Pools of Appalachia, and through this project he is perfecting a masterful blend of art and science – the kind of elegant yet fascinating photos that are what all conservation photographers dream of creating. From salamander egg clutches that look like galaxies floating through space, to frogs that look like Rembrandt paintings. And yet, even though there is this artistic, painterly quality, it's still very much a really natural history photo that draws us in as interested people learning more about the species that are inside of these pools. Bonus: There is a lot of sour and dour news out there, coming at us on a daily basis. For conservation photographers, that’s mostly what we deal in. It is our job to address the bad, and spark movement toward the good.Sparking movement toward the good – that all-important positive change – means finding the silver lining in every story. It’s an essential step in crafting a narrative that will both wake up an audience and inspire action.In fact, having a positive angle to a story is beneficial in several ways, including your story and audience as well as your mind and your bank account.As bad news batters us, we can easily build up walls to protect ourselves from the overwhelm and loss of hope. It’s all too easy to just shrug and think, “Well everything is going to pot so what difference would I possibly be able to make?”But that loss of hope, and loss of understanding our own individual power, is as great a threat to a sustainable future as the direct impacts of pollution, habitat destruction, species extinction and all the rest.As conservation visual storytellers, not only do we have to show the realities of what is happening, but it is also very much within our ability – and indeed our responsibility – to show our viewers what their best next step is for action.Finding that positive spin to your story helps move people from the problem to the solution, and inspires their action. And goodness knows we need everyone to take action on many issues.You'll LearnFind The “So What” For The AudienceWhy does this conservation issue matter to your audience member? Be careful that you're going beyond why you think it should matter to them.Plan The Call To Action For The AudienceWhat can someone do about the issue? If you know how the issue affects them, you can more easily identify the high quality actions your audience can take so they can avoid those negative impacts.Image What A Solution Looks Like And Reverse Engineer Productive Actions Or Event That Get To That SolutionIf you’re struggling to see how your issue affects any audience, take a step back and just think about what your own ideal solution would look like. And if you're a pro, you might feel pressure to charge whatever it is that your peers or colleagues are charging in order to be competitive or in that same ballpark. Or you might feel like you have to accept whatever dairy is offered by your client in order to ensure that you land that assignment.But the thing is, your day rate is a number that has to be founded in hard and fast facts if you want to run a profitable business. Your just-right day rate is a number you can calculate, then calibrate, once you understand your business needs, goals and industry expectations. #011: I battled my own style for awhile…Not in finding it, but in accepting it. I know it sounds strange. After all, isn't "finding your style" what every photographer aspires to? Actually, no. Especially. when you question if your style is what will earn you a paycheck. You question: Am I shooting the way editors want? The way clients want?It's a difficult thing to find your style AND to find confidence within your style.Along with countless other photographers, I went through this roller coaster. But eventually, I let my personal photographic. style surface, and after awhile I embraced it and appreciated it.And ultimately, this is the secret not just to success, but in happiness and fulfillment as a photographer.Your identity as a unique photographer, with a distinctive style…. that is powerful as a professional. Ultimately, when you develop your unique style, then you can be sought out for gigs because of that style. You’re known for something, You are now one of those photographers whose work is recognized at a glance because it’s so very you. #008: What sets conservation photographers apart from all other photographers? The answer lies in part in what we do after our photos are published. As a conservation photographer, this is often when the hard work of making an impact actually begins.Early into your journey as a conservation photographer, you discover that the work you do with your camera is only a tiny fraction of the entire scope of your advocacy.You shoot a story. The images are in print, people have hit "like" on social media, and the fanfair around the story has died down… but the issue that you documented likely still persists. The work doesn't end with publication. The hardest and most important work often just begins.Clay Bolt is a conservation photographer who takes this hard work to heart and is an incredibly inspiring example of someone who works tirelessly and is a catalyst for positive change both through his beautifully crafted photographs of pollinator species, and through the relentless behind-the-scenes work to change laws, establish protections, and build a genuinely engaged audience around the conservation efforts he cares so much about.Clay Bolt specializes in photographing the world’s smaller creatures. His current major focus is on North America’s native bees and the important roles that they play in our lives. Clay was a leading voice in the fight to protect the rusty-patched bumble bee under the Endangered Species Act, which became North America's first federally protected native bee in 2017. In 2019, Bolt became the first photographer to document a living Wallace's Giant Bee—the world's largest bee—as a part of a four person exploration team to rediscover the species in the Indonesian islands knowns as the North Moluccas. Clay has accomplished extraordinary things in his work - and much of it accomplished after the photos have been made. #007: It is truly incredible how much information and emotion can be packed into a single photograph documenting the briefest moment in time. Yet one image equals just one moment. So what is required when you need to convey the complexity and nuance of a large and multifaceted story?Amazingly, this can still be done in a small handful of images. They just need to be the right types and coordinated together so that they can illustrate with beautiful variation all the layers of a story.The essential images for a thorough photo story is probably one of my most favorite topics to discuss. It balances my creative side - exploring the poetry of visual storytelling and interpretation of a storyline - and my type-A personality that craves having lists and structure.Knowing that there are six types of images that you need to tell the full story gives you a path to follow as you shoot. Even as you explore every opportunity for a photograph that unfolds in the field, you can refer back to this list to know you’re covering all of your bases for when you get back and are curating your final selection of images for the essay.Understanding what these six shots are and why you need them allows you to think way outside of the box in an effort to build a contained story.I know that sounds really contradictory, but it’s true: structure provides freedom for exploration.Knowing that you need these six types of images for a thorough, complete story allows you to bust open creativity, because you can be sure you're staying on track.So it is well worth investing the time in learning and practicing the six must-have images for any photo story, and how you might work them into your own style and approach to photography.
