Since the events of October 7, the Chinese Communist Party has been spreading virulent antisemitic memes in the U.S. via its favorite information warfare tool: Tik Tok. We have had episodes on Tik Tok before, but the urgency of this issue has reached a fever pitch, culminating with the celebration of Osama bin Laden's “Letter to America” on the app last week. Tik Tok is pervasive – around a third of young adults use it for news – and it is incredibly effective. It is not just the propaganda that is convincing young Americans to hate America and ally themselves with bin Laden, Iran, and antisemites everywhere. And it is not even the losses on Xi Jinping's “smokeless battlefield.” It is the question of the easy control of young American hearts and minds – which apparently march to the TikTok algorithm's orders – and the consequent control the Chinese Communist Party has over American opinions and American politics. Bonus: There are also transgenic mice.Congressman Mike Gallagher has represented Wisconsin's 8th District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2017. In the 118th Congress, Representative Gallagher serves as Chairman of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, as Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Cyber, Information Technologies, and Innovation, and on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.Download the transcript here.

In this showcase series we talk about the most innovative integration into a dive app ever created - the Discover Feed.  This is truly a hub, newsfeed, and showcase for scuba divers to get a pulse on the community, dive industry, and most importantly, what their buddies are doing. I just keep getting more excited about this app every time a new update drop. If you'd like to contribute, submit your own story, or maybe even write for Buddy, go directly to their website, or click here: https://divewithbuddy.com/discoverstories Although I've already interviewed Alexis in Hawaii about this app on numerous topics, I keep finding new things that make it special and are worth discussing. With the official 2023 Summer launch nearing its third month in existence, Buddy is making waves throughout the industry as a disruptive platform that's quickly changing the landscape for divers, freedivers, and snorkelers. The world of diving is going to look very different 1-2 years from now, with the rapid adoption of the Buddy platform. The Buddy Dive Log app has the best of all the agencies like PADI, SSI, NAUI, and goes well beyond the capabilities of Manufacturer apps like Garmin, Suunto, Apple Watch and many others. It combines all the features into one, without those barriers that divide the already-small industry even smaller. Connecting buddies of ALL agencies is the skeleton key of all future growth. It's clean, works smoothly, easy to use, and is easily the most comprehensive diver app YET. It got me excited enough to continue interviewing and discussing this incredible new tool.  Not to worry, it's even set up for those that aren't certified yet, so literally anyone can download this app (and of course, it's free). sydney khoo was the recipient of the Penguin Random House Australia's Write It fellowship. Today I'm bringing you their new novel The Spider and Her Demons. The Spider and Her Demons High School can be hard at the best of times but somehow Zhi juggles study, tutoring and working in her Aunt's dumpling shop. Zhi's Aunt Mei has sacrificed a lot so that Zhi can attend a private school and all she asks in return is that Zhi maintain an 85 point grade average and hide the fact she has fangs, spinnerets and four prehensile limbs that emerge from her back! This story is wild! We dive headfirst into the world of Zhi as she navigates being a teenager with more than the regular amount of challenge to her life. The world building here is terrific. Zhi attends a (fictional) Sydney private school, whilst working in a dumpling shop in Chinatown. Everything is laid out for local readers to orient themselves to this world, which makes it particularly effective when it all goes sideways. On the one hand there is the regular amount of teenage angst and we ride alongside Zhi as she and her friends are just normally being normal. On the other we are treated to Zhi's anxiety as she revels in this normalcy, even as she feels it can't last. The aforementioned spider biology is a cause for constant stress and Zhi knows she has to be less than normal, she has to be practically invisible. The Spider and Her Demons takes the reader into the world of Zhi's hyper consciousness of her body. We are shown that who she is is both exceptional and terrifyingly normal. Zhi's daily routine to style her hair so that it hides her spider eyes is not so far any teenagers styling their way into some semblance of what they hope their peers will deem acceptable.  The difference Zhi struggles to accept in herself is only highlighted by the constant gossip surrounding the most popular girl in school, Dior Panne-Nix. While Zhi just wants to be like everyone else she must also confront that she doesn't even exist in Dior's orbit. Of course all this is primed for chaos as Zhi's secret is threatened one fateful night and she finds herself thrown into the path of Dior! The Spider and Her Demons works both as a fantastical new world to discover and as a character driven exploration of individuals just trying to make it through their days. sydney khoo writes her protagonist with power and doubt and so what might otherwise fall into superhero fare becomes a journey of personal discovery.  Right now it's probably important to note everything I'm not saying about The Spider and Her Demons. This book is brand new so I'm not going to go about blabbing all the best bits for a bit of analysis. Suffice to say that Zhi's spider form is just the beginning of a vast world that is hurtling towards Zhi. In short measure getting a pass mark is a thing of the past and even survival looks like the wrong question as a whole world unfolds before us. I'm a big fan of genre and the fantastic and The Spider and Her Demons gives us these in spades. It also takes the outcast hero out of the comfortable worlds of Marvel and DC and shows us how this works at the intersection of multiple identities. I can't talk around the spoilers any longer so let me just recommend you go and check out sydney khoo's The Spider and Her Demons so we can all revel in it together. Bonus - There's a full conversation with sydney on the Final Draft podcast…

In this showcase series of the best scuba diving app on the market today, we discuss how divers can setup a profile, and (finally) get tipped! This interview takes place on the beaches of Oahu, Hawaii, with Guest Alexis Jabbour. She's the mastermind behind the Buddy App, now over 2.5 years in the making! With the Summer 2023 launch happening as we speak, Buddy is making waves throughout the industry as a disruptive platform that's quickly changing the landscape for divers, freedivers, and snorkelers. With the tipping feature built right into the Buddy Profile, we no longer have to remember our cash, find an ATM, or worse… forget and never see the divemasters or boat crew again.  Not only can dives be validated and buddies be added to dive that show up in the dive log, it's an easy way to find and tip those who deserve it, even after-the-fact! Connecting buddies of ALL agencies is the skeleton key of all future growth in this watery world. Making sure hardworking scuba instructors, boat hands, and divemasters get paid is equally important. This app, yet again, fixes a lingering rankle within the dive industry. Further, Alexis talks about the Charter and Dive shops features that allow those QR codes to be posted for those who pool their tips. It's clean, works smoothly, easy to use, and is the most comprehensive diver app YET. It got me excited enough to continue interviewing and discussing this incredible new tool, and making it part of our series here on The Scuba Diving Channel. Just a reminder, it's even set up for those that aren't certified yet! So literally anyone can download this app (it's free). Alexis Jabbour is the mastermind behind the Buddy App, now 2.5 years in the making! With the June 2023 launch happening as we speak, Buddy is perhaps the most important step forward the dive industry will see in a generation. Creating a platform that FINALLY gets divers from all walks of life into a single place is injecting a new level of fun, but importantly… CONNECTION! It helps industry leaders make more money, makes it easier to market themselves, and helps everyday divers connect with other divers easier than anything that's ever been made. This helps any scuba instructor, dive shop, charter or facility using ANY agency ( PADI, NAUI, SSI, SDI, BSAC, CMAS, etc). It allows Divemasters and Instructors to “Verify” dives, making it easier than ever to keep people up to date, legit, and more actively engaged with the community. Further, it allows you to connect your money accounts for tipping and bookings, verifies your certifications or professional memberships, lets you share your gear, and of course has all the other fun dive log stuff (literally everything) including a photo filter for underwater adjustments. It has the ability to “friend” and chat with other divers directly on the platform, and helps you find divers in a specific area that match your skill level. It's clean, works smoothly, easy to use, and looks to be the most comprehensive diver app YET. It got me excited enough to continue interviewing and discussing this incredible new tool.  Not to worry, it's setup for Freedivers, Snorkelers, for those that aren't certified yet, and on the horizon: The Mermaid community! Dr. Peter Small has a specialty in cough which is unique. He is a member of the Baby Boomer Generation and is located in the state of Washington. He is the chief medical officer of Hyfe, a company that uses acoustic tools for respiratory diagnostics and monitoring. Here are 3 things that stood out as Peter Small gave us a chief medical officer's perspective on healthcare: · Hyfe wants to do for cough what the thermometer did for fever. Cough is one of the most common reasons that people seek healthcare, yet it is a symptom that is rarely measured · Their app is like a Fitbit for coughing. Using the app, you can have hard data around how many times you are coughing each day. · Looking at the pattern of cough may also give an indication as to its origin. Is it GERD? Is it allergies? Is it a cold? Looking at when people cough can help identify its cause. · Bonus: There is a value internationally to looking at cough as more than just a symptom of tuberculosis. 147 How to Make Your Podcast Better in the New Year

Just the Tip from Your Podcast Performance Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2021 8:26

What would make your podcast better next year? Here are my top 4 tips on how to reflect to get better results from your podcast.  You want results, right?  Okay, then let's get into it.  I released this episode right before the end of 2021… but don't lump me in with all of those ‘new year's resolutions' types. That ain't me.  But, I will admit. This time of year does serve as a good reminder to reflect on what you've done so that you can revamp and get the results you're looking for.  In this episode of Just One Tip, I'm sharing my top 3 (okay 4, since you're counting) tools for reflecting on how your show is doing. And, by ‘how your show is doing' I mean, how well your show is delivering on your specific KPIs. If you're going after audience growth, how are your downloads? If you want to develop loyal fans, how's your engagement? What about leads? Traffic to your website? Invites to speak? Sales? Offers of unconditional love… look, I don't know what you're going for here… so judge for yourself. Look at yourself. That's why it's called reflecting! Here's how I CAN help. Here are my top 3 key things you should be reflecting on about your podcast so you can get results.  1. Check Your Stats for Traction. There are four places I like to look to determine which shows had the best traction:  Titles (which titles generated the highest plays) Topics (what were listeners loving) Time (what length of show generated the most plays) Talked About (which episodes were the most shared). These four things will help you determine what you should be doing more of in the new year.  BONUS: There are a lot of SEO tools you can use to help you determine which shows drive the biggest results but one simple option we like to use is Google Search Console. This helps us understand the keywords that are working in delivering new listeners to the website (and podcast).  2. Customers and Clients. If you're podcasting for your business, then reviewing your clients for the past 12 months can really help you align your podcast… or re-align it as the case may be. Do you know who you want to be talking to (and is it who's showing up)? Take a look at your client list.  If they're just the kind of clients you want to attract? Keep doing what you're doing.  If they're not the kind of clients you want, adjust your content accordingly. If they're finding you through your podcast, hiring you because of the podcast, or see your podcast as proof that you know what the hell you're talking about, HUZZAH, your podcast is working. If your podcast is not attracting clients, building authority or serving as social proof… you need to revisit what you're doing! 3. You. Yes, it's time to check in on you. Ask yourself, ‘how you doin?' This is especially true if you've been podcasting for a while. Are you showing up 100% for every episode? Is the passion still there? Are you doing everything you can to serve your listener? Are you letting little things slip (Oops, I was talking into the wrong mic, oh well… good enough)? You might want to actually listen to a few episodes for this reflective exercise.    Now, here's the hard part. It can be hard to objectively reflect on your own podcast. I mean, you're in it. It's your blood, sweat, and tears. It's your baby. That's why I offer my free 15-minute coaching calls. I can be the truth-teller you need to hear. I can hold up that mirror. I can help you see what's right in front of you so you can get out of that rut and get the results your looking for (and your business needs) from your podcast.  Yep, that's reflecting tip #4. ME. All you have to do is click here to access my calendar and book your free 15 minute coaching call. My co-host this week is my friend Melissa H., not to be confused with Muffy who I had on my show a few weeks ago. We go over a funny story of how we met and coped being stationed in a small town together and then we get into this week's stories.Story 1: A woman writes in because she is self-conscious about a mannequin comment a friend made to her. In order for her to have an orgasm, she has to stick her legs straight out. This is information that she shared with her friend, who in turn replied with "ew mannequin!" Honestly, the whole story is funny and I think Melissa and I give some sound advice.Story 2: Here we go with another story of people being attracted to a family member. A woman expresses how she feels toward her brother. She has not done anything sexual with him, but they have kissed. Which, um, ew. She tried to see a therapist about it but only went to one session and never went back. Maybe try going back because that's not the sibling love you should have for your brother.Story 3: Lastly, a woman wants to know how to deal with her husband, who has taken their child comfort blanket away. Sounds normal right? Well, the child is 6 and refers to the blanket as "him". The father is uncomfortable with how attached their child is to it and the mother doesn't know how to please her husband while also comforting her child.Bonus: There was also a conversation about a crazy Reddit confession that you just HAVE to hear! How do you justify working with a charity who needs your valuable podcasting skills…  but can’t pay you the rate that you deserve? I firmly believe that we working podcasters should be compensated for our efforts. We’ve invested in ourselves to develop skillsets, and we should not devalue that or ourselves by giving away our services for free. Nor should we undercharge. But there are worthy organizations out there that could use your professional podcasting help. It’s just unlikely that those worthy organizations can afford to pay you the same rate as you’re able to charge commercial entities. Let’s examine a few ways around that challenge, shall we? You could “tithe” your time. 10% of a 40-hour week is four hours. Can you carve out a morning or an afternoon once a week? My preference is to invoice the charitable organization at the same rate I invoice my other clients. But I add a discount line item (much, much more than 10%) to bring the final invoice amount down to a number that fits within the charity’s modest operating budget. This shows the true value of what they’re getting, and makes the conversation easier when one of the founders or funders askes for a podcasting proposal for their business. Bonus: There might be positive tax ramifications when working with charities. So definitely check with your tax pro and/or your bookkeeper about the possible tax implications of providing your valuable professional services either at a significant discount or for free. Maybe you need some help to do this? If this idea of doing some podcasting for good appeals to you, you might need to build out a small (or large) team of other working podcasters who complement your skillset. It’s important to find people you like working with as much as it is important to find organizations you can all get behind. Imagine what good you could do if you could talk 10 other skilled podcasters to tithe 10% of their time for a worthy cause you can all work on. Bonus: There is a lot of sour and dour news out there, coming at us on a daily basis. For conservation photographers, that’s mostly what we deal in. It is our job to address the bad, and spark movement toward the good.Sparking movement toward the good – that all-important positive change – means finding the silver lining in every story. It’s an essential step in crafting a narrative that will both wake up an audience and inspire action. In fact, having a positive angle to a story is beneficial in several ways, including your story and audience as well as your mind and your bank account. As bad news batters us, we can easily build up walls to protect ourselves from the overwhelm and loss of hope. It’s all too easy to just shrug and think, “Well everything is going to pot so what difference would I possibly be able to make?”But that loss of hope, and loss of understanding our own individual power, is as great a threat to a sustainable future as the direct impacts of pollution, habitat destruction, species extinction and all the rest.As conservation visual storytellers, not only do we have to show the realities of what is happening, but it is also very much within our ability – and indeed our responsibility – to show our viewers what their best next step is for action.Finding that positive spin to your story helps move people from the problem to the solution, and inspires their action. And goodness knows we need everyone to take action on many issues. You'll LearnFind The “So What” For The AudienceWhy does this conservation issue matter to your audience member? Be careful that you're going beyond why you think it should matter to them.Plan The Call To Action For The AudienceWhat can someone do about the issue? If you know how the issue affects them, you can more easily identify the high quality actions your audience can take so they can avoid those negative impacts.Image What A Solution Looks Like And Reverse Engineer Productive Actions Or Event That Get To That SolutionIf you’re struggling to see how your issue affects any audience, take a step back and just think about what your own ideal solution would look like. Start with the perfect ending, then build a map to get there.Connect Your Story To Broader Positive Aspect Of The Species, Location, Or Activity That You're DocumentingIf you're zeroed in on one particular thing, and that happens to be a bummer of a story, then look for ways to expand out and connect that particular thing to a larger context that does have some positive angles.Find Precedent For Success That Can Be Used As An Example For Where Your Conservation Issue Could Also Find SuccessAn incredible amount of hope can be found in seeing where there has been similar success elsewhere. Seeing the possibilities actually playing out inspires incredible amounts of hope - and this strategy helps fuel answers to all the previous strategies as well.
