Welcome to Series Two of our podcast! After a brief break, we've been working on how to enhance your listening experience and provide even more value.Introducing "For The Love of Wine" - a journey where we guide you through our approach to wine, from purchase to the recycling bin.Our goal is to offer insight that helps you see wine through our eyes, enriching your knowledge and enjoyment. The first episode is all about how to find the right wine because according to a recent study by Marks & Spencer, a quarter of wine shoppers spend more than ten minutes deliberating over which bottle to buy. One-third feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices, while more than half admit they don't know which wines they like! Bonkers. The time we take deliberating over what to purchase collectively adds up to more than 50 million squandered hours in a supermarket wine section. Time is Merlot ladies and gentlemen!Alongside the pod, we thought it would be helpful to share our top tips on finding the perfect bottle here. The groundwork:* Identify your budget - be kind to yourself.* Identify which style you're after - think about the occasion. * Identify your retailer:* I'd suggest for budgets below £10, opt for supermarkets. * Between £10 and £15, seek out specialist wine retailers or independents. * From £15 to £50, explore independent merchants. * For budgets exceeding £50, indulge in a specialist fine wine merchant or an auctioneer. * For a comprehensive list of merchants, refer to the invaluable resource on Jancis Robinson's website. Before you hit the shops:* Pull up your wine atlas, use online wine maps and take a look around the world for inspiration.* Access ‘The List' of my top five recommendations from each supermarket and beyond - update landing soon.* Check out the Decanter's wine review section.* Like you do when you're trying to find a recipe, type into Google: “If I like [insert something you like] what wine should I go for?”.* Give your independent a call with your requirements - they will be glad to hear from you.* Prepare early - the more you research the more likely you are to enjoy the experience. When you're at the shop:* Generally try to avoid mass-produced big-label wines.* Have a look for medals from the more respected awards. Here is a good article on what to look out for.* Use apps such as Vivino and Cellar Tracker.* Read the descriptors or label info (if there are any).* Ask a member of staff!* EXPERIMENT - don't stick to the tried and tested. Here is all the info about the episode:Will's wine of the week:LFE 900 Single Vineyard, ChileLuke's thought of the week:When you're at mile 20 of 26 you are only halfway there.Paula Radcliffe References:Zinfandel - grape variety.Carménère - grape variety.Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary - wine flavours and aromas.Sweet wines - definition.Vin de Constance - South African sweet wine.Trinity Restaurant - Clapham, London.Tokaji - sweet wine from Hungary.Botrytis - the fungus removes water from the grapes helping to create sweet wines.Furmint - grape variety.Pernand-Vergelesses - wine region in Burgundy.Santenay - wine region in Burgundy.Catena/Catena Alta Malbec - from Waitrose.Ribero del Duero - wine region in Spain.Grand Rutherglen Muscat - sweet wine from Australia.Maury - wine region in France.Pedro Ximenez - sweet style of Sherry.Sauternes - wine region in France. As always please like, share and comment.Stay Corked - Luke & Will This is a public episode. Leah Adint, winemaker for Erath Winery, joins us today to tell us why her Reserve Pinot Noir is *perfect* for your holiday table! Why the Pairing Works: Pinot Noir is one of the most versatile wines for food! It's all about balance. Pinot has great acidity, bright flavors, medium-bodied & alcohol content, and lower tannins than other varietals, so there's no worry about overpowering certain dishes. Pinot will complement red fruits in foods like cranberry sauce and also work perfectly with roasted turkey. What Makes this Pinot Noir Special: Dick Erath moved to Oregon in 1967 and planted grapes in 1968, not knowing how incredible the terroir would be. Leah is only the 4th winemaker since its inception. Oregon Pinot Noir is kind of a 'best of both worlds' of California and Burgundy, France. We find ripe fruit (California) and herbaceous and floral qualities (Burgundy) The 'Reserve' Pinot is a delicious blend of Erath's many Single Vineyard expressions, lighter and perhaps more 'Burgundian' than the rest in the lineup Erath Pinot Noir Reserve, in Emoji's:

Chris Jackson of Stonestreet Estate Vineyards and Jackson Family Wines (Kendall-Jackson) joined Bruce to talk about all things wine, including why Healdsburg, California, is the best wine town to visit in America, the truth about how the family business got started (and how it was pretty much a “catastrophe”), and other wine destinations he loves and why you should visit them. Should Sonoma Valley be your first choice over Napa? Before revealing what regions the Jackson family feels represent the future of wine (and why a shift in wine regions proves climate change is real), Chris talks about what makes Stonestreet Estate and its 54,000 acres so unique, what wines you'll taste on the Stonestreet Mountain Excursion, why Stonestreet releases wines five years of age minimum, and how the Jackson family makes decisions centuries, if not decades, out. He then takes us on a wild tour of McLaren Vale and gives us a taste of his top spots in Italy and Oregon. Impress your fine-wine-loving friends by sending them this earthy and elegant episode! Marcus goes on to recount some wonderful stories from his experience in filming with Anthony Bourdain, as well as how filming No Passport Required (PBS) really exposed him to the bounty of food cultures across the U.S. (and what his favorite food cities are now.) Finally, Marcus talks about the impact one of the country's most cherished food writers, Jonathon Gold, had on the food scene in Los Angeles and beyond. We have three great new features. We will look at the great website and click on the links at the bottom of this page, and join us with these great new features. We have our first feature with the wines of Davis Bynum. These wines are incredible and the fruit sourcing is amazing. The first to produce single vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir in 1973, Davis Bynum was instrumental in bringing the prestige to Russian River Valley vineyards, still acclaimed as one of California's finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir growing regions. Today, almost 50 years later, the heritage of Davis Bynum lives on through the hand-crafted creation of wines grown exclusively in Russian River Valley. We will also feature the wines of Rodney Strong Vineyards. Our story begins over 60 years ago, when a celebrated American dancer named Rod Strong settled in Sonoma County to pursue a second lifelong creative passion: winemaking. Rodney Strong Vineyards was the 13th winery bonded in the newly discovered Sonoma County wine industry. A trio of winemaking paths crossed when Rick Sayre joined the team as Winemaker in 1979, and again when the Klein Family, 4th generation California farmers, purchased the winery in 1989 and initiated a renewed commitment of modern artisan winemaking. Through the years, Rodney Strong Vineyards has earned the reputation for critically acclaimed Single Vineyard and Reserve wines, stand out Estate releases and best-in-class Sonoma County varietal wine. Our third feature is on the wines of Upshot and Rodney Strong Vineyards. These wines are blends and very good. The end result of our winemaker's passion for blending flavorful, deeply nuanced and unique wines. Exclusively from vineyards in California's best wine growing regions, our blends offer a sumptuous, almost magical outcome of the growing season and winemaking process. Greg Morthole and I will save you a seat and expect you very soon. Cheers ! Click here and join us as we enjoy great food and wine . Click here and join us as we enjoy great food and wine . JamesSuckling.com Associate Editor Claire Nesbitt talks with Patrick de Suarez D'Aulan, the president of Alta Vista in Mendoza, Argentina, about the winery's history and their production of single-vineyard wines.
Associate Editor Claire Nesbitt chats with Laura Catena, the managing director of Bodega Catena Zapata and founder of Domaine Zico, and winemaker Alejandro Vigil, about their journey with pinot noir in Argentina and how Domaine Zico came to be."Pinot noir was always the heartbreak grape," Laura says. "Pinot noir was always difficult. We had a few good vintages in the beginning, in the late '90s... Because of that, we planted in Adriana."And then, she said, "we had what I call the 'dark ages,'" marked by overproduction and rot. Following a few discouraging vintages, Laura said she and Alejandro then decided that "we're really going to do something important with pinot noir." It marked a turning point for Domaine Zico.

On March 23 James tasted a new single-plot cabernet sauvignon with Charles de Bournet of Chile's Lapostolle and Clos Apalta. de Bournet is exploring this concept from his vineyards that were planted in 1910 and plans to release several hundred cases. The wine is a stunner and highlights the unique terroir of the Apalta vineyard and it's ungrafted, old vines. Bournet explained that La Parcelle 8 Vieilles Vignes is the original plot of vineyards of the winery that convinced his parents to develop their wine projects in Chile. And the Lapostolle Apalta La Parcelle 8 Vieilles Vignes 2015 is a late release showing beautiful drinkability now but lots of age-worthiness. “2018 was like a Christmas gift from Santa,” said winemaker Andrea Leon of Clos Apalta and Lapostolle who was also present on the Zoom call. “The 2018 was wonderful for us. We had a wet enough winter. Not too much or too little. We had a little bit of rain in the springtime to come along with the growth of the grape…it was really a wonderful harvest along with the 2005. The 2018 was everything that you could wish for to make wines that were fully ripe but have a lot of elegance and freshness. The wine tasting note is below.LAPOSTOLLE APALTA LA PARCELLE 8 VIEILLES VIGNES 2015Take a look at the Tasting Interview at https://www.jamessuckling.com/videos/lapostolle-new-cabernet/
This episode goes deep! My guest is local Chicago Somm Gleshan and he is a wealth of information, which is perfect for all of my questions. We start with a fantastic Lindquist Chardonnay, then move over to Italy for a Principiano Barolo and wrap up with a Celestino Pecci Brunello. All of these wines are absolutely "gangster juice" as Gleshan likes to call them, and who am I to argue.
We have a great feature here with winemaker Greg Morthole. Today we discuss one of my favorite grapes and wines...Cab Franc! We will check out the tasting notes and history of this great wine from Rodney Strong Vineyards. SONOMA GROWN FOR OVER 50 YEARS Our story begins over 55 years ago, when a celebrated American dancer named Rod Strong settled in Sonoma County to pursue a second lifelong creative passion: winemaking. Through the years, Rodney Strong Vineyards has earned the reputation for critically acclaimed Single Vineyard and Reserve wines, stand out Estate releases and best-in-class Sonoma County varietal wines. Raised in Sacramento, Greg Morthole attended the University of Wyoming, where he earned a B.S. in Natural Sciences. He entered the wine industry as a Laboratory Analyst at Vinquiry in Windsor, California, then moved to Chalk Hill Winery in 2003 to become an Enologist. Greg joined the Rodney Strong Vineyards team in 2005, when he accepted a position as Lab Director. His innate acumen for winemaking became immediately clear to his peers, and he quickly ascended to an appointment as Associate Winemaker in late 2007. In the spring of 2010, he was promoted to Winemaker, overseeing all aspects of operations and winemaking in our Artisan, “Winery Within the Winery.” With a quiet demeanor and a determined attitude, Greg's energetic style illustrates how enjoyable he finds winemaking to be. “Making the Reserve and Single-Vineyard wines here is an honor,” he says. In 2010, we achieved a milestone in sustainability when our vineyard practices were officially certified by the California Sustainable Winegrower's Alliance. This statewide certification program provides third-party verification of a winery's commitment to continuous improvement in the adoption and implementation of sustainable winegrowing practices. Our commitment to sustainable farming is an ongoing responsibility that combines environmental health, economic feasibility and social equity. Now we will join Greg and learn more about these amazing wines.Click on the link below and join us! We will now open and pour you a glass of this amazing wine,in fact wines!Cheers! No tempo ideal e tudo!

Show Notes: Liquor Plus Radio Episode 4: Brew of the Week Jan. 4-Jan. 10, 2012- Phillips & Garrison Brewing ‘Mash Up’ Baltic Porter Program Note: Liquor Plus Radio was designed to be raw and done in one take. Authenticity is the name of this game... Collaborative brewing efforts are growing in popularity amongst craft brewers and I can see why. They offer the same kind of cache and imagery that a winery gets when they speak of a Single Vineyard wine. The collaboration between the Phillips Brewery and Garrison of Halifax is easy to understand. Both are at the heart of their communities growing brewing culture, both got started facing similar financial and licensing challenges, both are primarily ale houses, and both are out of the box thinkers when it comes to crafting brews that are full of flavour, and if you have ever met either Matt Phillips of the Phillips Brewery or Daniel Girard of Garrison Brewing, you know you have met two kindered spirits. Why Porter… good question! Porter is traditionally brewed used lager yeasts and dark malts that results in a smoother texture and flavours of dark chocolate or cocoa, coffee and roasted nuts. The theory goes that Porter got its name because the street and river porter’s of 18th century London popularised it; nice. Cozy thoughts but I’m not so sure of the truth in this. Baltic Porter is also traditionally brewed using lager yeasts and dark malts but is much stronger. Back in the day this was to insure that the beer could survive the overseas trip from Finland, Estonia or Sweden over the North Sea to England. Today the extra alcohol simply adds more body to the brew. In terms of taste, first thing first, make sure you have it at the right temperature. Porters and Baltic Porters should be enjoyed at room temperature. Room temperature allows you to enjoy the complete texture, flavours, and complexities of the brew. Porters are ‘cozy’ beers and chilling makes them as cozy as sitting on an ice block with the air conditioning on. The texture is smooth and languid while the flavours feature dark chocolate, figs and hints of fresh ground coffee. Just on the finish you will notice a hint of black licorice that brings it all together. For the foodgasm we are all on a quest to get, pair this with a good hearty stew, casserole or pot pie. Rich cheeses like Beemster and aged Gouda rock with this brew. As for desserts go with choocalate cake or brownies, even some truffles would be heaven with this. As our Brew of the Week you can taste this beer in everyone of our 5 locations this Saturday January 7 from 3-5pm.
