If you remember, in one of our earliest episodes, episode 23, I spoke with Austin Whitman, to unpack the meaning behind carbon-neutral certifications and what they really mean for consumers, companies, and the planet.Since then, a lot has changed, including the name of the Climate Neutral certification. Climate Neutral has officially rebranded as Change Climate, and in today's episode, I'm excited to welcome Austin back to talk about what that shift represents and what's next for their mission.Austin Whitman is co-founder and CEO of The Change Climate Project, a nonprofit with a mission to eliminate carbon emissions by accelerating corporate investments in climate solutions. The organization manages The Climate Label certification, a mark of climate leadership for consumer brands. Austin has spent more than two decades advocating and building solutions for the climate transition across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. In episode 174 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, you'll get an inside look into how the nonprofit is evolving, what their vision looks like for the next five years, and how the outdoor industry has responded to growing calls for sustainability and climate action. Whether you're a conscious consumer, a sustainability-minded brand, or just curious about what's happening behind the scenes in outdoor gear manufacturing, this episode is full of insights on how we can better align our choices with climate action.INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/outdoor.minimalist.book/WEBSITE:https://www.theoutdoorminimalist.com/YOUTUBE: @theoutdoorminimalistORDER THE BOOK: https://www.theoutdoorminimalist.com/bookLISTENER SURVEY: https://forms.gle/jd8UCN2LL3AQst976--------------------Change Climate ProjectWebsite: https://www.changeclimate.org/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thechangeclimateproject/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/changeclimate/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheChangeClimateProject/

If you're into outdoor adventure, photography, or just well-designed gear, chances are you've heard of Peak Design. In episode 171 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, Meg is joined by Peter Dering, CEO and founder of Peak Design, to talk about something that sets them apart: employee ownership. They discuss what that actually means in practice, how it influences everything from product development to sustainability initiatives, and why Peak Design believes this model is the future of ethical business.Peter Dering is the founder and CEO of Peak Design, a San Francisco-based company he started in 2010 making photography, outdoor, and lifestyle carry gear. Since launching Peak Design, Dering has overseen 13 Kickstarter campaigns, raising $40M and proving the validity of crowdfunding as a method to maintain financial and operational independence from outside investors. Growing acutely aware of his company's increasing carbon footprint, Dering co-founded Climate Neutral (now the Change Climate Project): an independent non-profit organization that enlists private businesses to achieve net-zero carbon emissions through a simplified, four-step process. Working To Eliminate 10 Billion Pounds Of Waste, Let's Go Green: Jeremy believes creating businesses as a force of good to leave the world better than we found it. While climbing society's corporate ladder as an environmental consultant he felt the urge to live his own dreams so he started Open Mind Developments Corporation in 2007 to look at problems with an open mind for a different view, and solve them.Seeing plastic litter on a beach inspired Jeremy to create the world's first compostable phone case and Pela in 2011, to help solve the plastic waste problem. Pela recently created Lomi, a Smart Waste Appliance to help solve the food waste and plastic problem and is now creating a waste innovation category with a goal of eliminating 10 billions pounds of waste on their mission to create a waste free future.Jeremy's experience with self awareness, personal growth, going from zero to 1, going from employee to entrepreneur, the power of trust and a team, and the emotional side of business on his journey helps provide a guide for those who are ready to take action on their dreams, create their own personal legend and make the world a better place to be.Quote: We are the people we have been waiting for. - First Nations Elder Today's Top 3 Takeaways: Sustainable Product DesignPlant-based Alternatives to PlasticBe Courageous and Follow Your Dreams Today's Guest & Resource Links: www.pelacase.comwww.lomi.com Watch us on YouTube: https://youtu.be/FUyK6FaFL6o Timestamped Show Notes: 00:30 - Introduction09:25 - Another reason that we liked about phones at high margins, so you could pay more for material, small product, put in the mail, ship it directly to consumers and you don't have to worry about the big gatekeepers and getting into retail with low margins. So that's how early on we overcame that, that margin difference. In the grand scheme of things, no, it's not that much more.20:35 - In 2018, when the three of us partners came together, we really clarified our vision and our mission. Our mission, our crazy goal, was to create a waste free future by creating everyday products in an everyday way. So not just the product waste, but like packaging waste, and are we wasting energy or time? How can we use our product as a force of good and how can we support nonprofits? How can we build the most sustainable, environmentally friendly product or company in the world? So that was our basis point. 32:30 - We're not trying to solve the electrical grid generation issue. I believe, one day, we're gonna get there. It's going to be quicker, one day energy will be renewable. We've run all of the numbers, depending on if you're in Texas, or California, your carbon footprint is more or less. As long as you're not sending your end product to the landfill, it's a win. Because you're keeping it out of the landfill. It's either going in your backyard or in your farm or other place. So you're ahead from a carbon footprint standpoint, and we also are Climate Neutral certified. So we measure our carbon footprint every year. We try as best we can do our carbon footprint, but the stuff that we can't lower anymore, we purchased offsets, carbon credits. So when Lomi arrives at your door, all the manufacturing, all the transportation, and your phone case, you're at zero.40:30 - In regards to landfill methane collection, it's good, but it's not as efficient yet. It's a good step forward. They're trying, anytime you're trying, I give everyone credit, because...

In Episode #108, we explore building a global blockchain that's high-speed, climate neutral, and low-fee. We're joined by Illia Polosukhin, NEAR Protocol's Co-Founder. We cover why proof of stake beats proof of work, how NEAR approached scaling, and how Illia raised more than $10M to help fund aid in war-torn Ukraine.  “For me, web3 is not about decentralization. I think decentralization is just a tool. What it is about is low switching costs.” – Illia Polosukhin EPISODE GUIDE (LINKS, QUOTES, NOTES, AND BOOKS MENTIONED) https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/near-protocol-illia-polosukhin-spotlight  FULL TEXT TRANSCRIPT https://www.danielscrivner.com/notes/near-protocol-illia-polosukhin-spotlight-transcript  CHAPTERS This episode is our definitive guide to building a layer-one blockchain that's incredibly fast, has very low transaction fees, and is climate neutral. In it we cover: (00:00:00) – Introduction (00:02:35) – How NEAR Protocol is imagining your world (00:04:46) – Why decentralization is just a tool (00:09:14) – Dethroning monopolies and leveling the playing field (00:14:02) – NEAR Protocol's origin with scaling crowdsourcing (00:20:18) – Lack of intellectual honesty in crypto (00:24:19) – NEAR's approach to sharding (00:31:03) – The importance of bringing the community into decision making (00:37:47) – How the co-founder's role can evolve from centralized to decentralized (00:43:17) – Illia's Web3 mindmap and staying decentralized while preserving privacy (00:46:36) – NEAR's approach to sustainability in blockchain (00:49:46) – Founders: Build credibility and ship fast (00:54:19) – Handling fear and anxiety when building in crypto: Keep calm and build on (00:58:52) – The Unchained Fund and helping Ukraine ABOUT NEAR PROTOCOL Illia Polosukhin is Co-Founder of NEAR Protocol. NEAR is a layer-one blockchain that's incredibly fast, has very low transaction fees, and is climate neutral—in part because of its Proof of Stake model. It's traded on crypto exchanges under the ticker symbol NEAR and has a market cap of just under $5B today. From 2020 through 2021, the developers working in NEAR's ecosystem—building applications on top of their blockchain—quadrupled, making NEAR the second-fastest growing chain behind Solana.  Illia is an incredibly impressive founder, but more importantly, he's an incredibly thoughtful engineer, leader, and community builder who has built something incredible slowly and methodically, one step at a time.

He later worked for the UN, informing his vision of the sustainable brand he would go on to found in 2010 out of a deep love for the ocean. TWOTHIRDS has evolved into a community of like-minded people. The brand wants to create clothing with zero impact on the planet and its oceans. They use fabrics that save water, turn plastic waste into quality garments and wrap orders in paper packaging. Their operations are all Climate Neutral. Their search for sustainable fashion began in the Basque country, but it was when they moved to Barcelona that things really took off. They pioneered pre-order. They found better materials. They grew. TWOTHIRDS is about the personal touch, craftsmanship, and making change that ripples out across the industry. Bringing zero-emission commercial aircraft to market by 2035? That's just the beginning for one global aerospace pioneer. . Airbus has long designed, manufactured and delivered products and services for the commercial aircraft, helicopter, defense and space sectors. While the company is renowned for its exceptional aerospace solutions, they are also at the forefront of decarbonization and sustainable aviation. . Today, Airbus aircraft can operate on a 50% blend of sustainable biofuel made up of food and animal byproducts (think: leftover French fry grease). By 2030, that percentage will rise to 100%. Not only is Airbus promoting the use of sustainable biofuel in aviation, but they plan to move beyond biofuel with the creation of synthetic fuels that don't include petroleum, animal, food or agricultural byproducts. . While the move away from traditional fuel sources will take time, Airbus is dedicated to supporting the aviation industry and the world through decarbonization standards and innovations related to biofuel, hydrogen, electric flight, fleet renewal, climate monitoring and so much more. . For insight into the company's sustainable aviation strategy, we sat down with Amanda Simpson, Vice President, Research and Technology. Hear how Airbus is using its strength in innovation and strong partnerships to build better aircraft while protecting the environment for future generations.  . We'd love to hear from you. “For me, web3 is not about decentralization. I think decentralization is just a tool. What it is about is low switching costs.” – Illia Polosukhin Illia Polosukhin is Co-Founder of NEAR Protocol. This episode is a fascinating deep dive into NEAR, the NEAR ecosystem, the origin story, and what it takes to build a leading blockchain capable of competing with Ethereum and Solana. In this episode,we discuss: Why Proof of Stake beats Proof of Work, including why Illia is always looking to build technology that's more efficient and co do more with less. How NEAR approached scaling and why they went through 3 separate designs (all of which failed) before arriving at the sharding method they use today. How NEAR is building a global, decentralized community that includes regional hubs located around the world from Europe to Africa, all of which include accelerators, developer grants, and community education and events. What it's like to found a project and take it from a centralized team of a handful of people to a decentralized community of hundreds of thousands of people. How Illia raised more than $10M to help fund aid in war-torn Ukraine through his Unchain Fund. Illia is an incredibly impressive founder, but more importantly, he's an incredibly thoughtful engineer, leader, and community builder who has built something incredible slowly and methodically, one step at a time. We make decisions about what to buy (and who to buy it from) every day. Choosing environmentally-responsible products and brands is important to many of us, especially in light of what's happening with our climate. But these choices can be difficult to make when we're surrounded by persuasive advertising and most of us don't have the time to research every bottle of detergent or pair of shoes. In this episode, Christina focuses her attention on greenwashing. It's one of those big bad words of environmentalism, and it can be kind of tricky to spot. Many of the products we use in our daily life are subject to greenwashing -- even bank accounts! So, how do you avoid greenwashed products? How much does your dollar actually matter? And what are companies really doing to act on climate change?Christina brings these questions and more to a few people who are determined to combat greenwashing. First, she catches up with Avocado's Director of Sustainability and Impact, Bri Decker, to hear about how Avocado is communicating its impact to customers.Bri shares that there are legitimate, rigorous certifications and labels that brands can pursue to verify and convey their environmental practices. So, Christina chats with representatives of these certifications to learn more. They include Climate Neutral, 1% for the Planet, and B Lab's B Corp certification.Going beyond specific certifications, Christina talks with Raj Aggarwal of the B Corp Climate Collective about how business leaders can and should be approaching climate action, specifically through climate justice. Ali-Reza Vahabzadeh of the American Sustainable Business Council also shares how the organization is advocating for these priorities legislatively.Highlights:What is greenwashing?
