12 Things to Avoid If You Want to Become Rich

Bright Side

If you want to be successful and rich, but something always seems to be standing in your way, you might be making one of the most common mistakes that prevent us from getting more money. Financial experts and world-famous business magnates and Facebook COO share some simple rules how to make more money and save it. In her book Secrets of Six-Figure Women, Barbara Stanny explains that women who don't earn much have a lot in common. Too many of them are ready to settle for a lower salary because they underestimate themselves as professionals and even see their achievements as a mere coincidence or just good luck. On the other hand, men tend to overestimate their professional skills, and that's what helps them climb to the top. All work must be paid for and working on your own time is only acceptable in rare emergency situations. If your responsibilities have increased but your salary hasn't, don't be afraid to ask for a promotion. There are lots of reasons why people spend more time at work than they are scheduled: poor time management, an urge to show that you're a super responsible employee and having confidence in your own indispensability. But constantly working overtime won't help you earn more money at all. If you love your job, you'll do it with pleasure and excitement, helping you increase productivity. And your boss will notice your sincere devotion and enthusiasm and become interested in your professional growth. If you're scared to make a complete change right away, take small steps towards your dream job. Money can open a lot of doors for you, but it shouldn't be the primary reason for having a certain job. Don't forget that nothing stands still, the world is always changing. You might earn enough today, but nobody knows what tomorrow brings. Broaden your horizons as often as you can, additional knowledge never hurt nobody! Take risks and believe in yourself. Doing at least a little bit more every day and changing the game is a sure-fire way to the top! Music: Diamond Ortiz - Seven Twenty https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... Your mindset about money affects more than just your business. It affects your confidence, your feelings of worth and the value that you place on your time and work. Today we're talking about all things money with return guest and friend, Kimberly Wylie. Kimberly is an absolute inspiration in this field and even though she started out in the world of finance and is a pro at Excel spreadsheets, that didn't prevent her from experiencing the fears and doubts that so many small business owners encounter when it comes to pricing and selling their products. Kimberly went down the road of charging what everyone else was charging and working too hard for too little. She made the painful realization that the value she was placing on her services and products was actually a reflection of how she valued herself. It didn't take long before she realized that she already knew how to see the stories that are told through numbers in a business and decided to start telling a different story for herself and her business partner Jessica Sikes.  Is talking about money and pricing uncomfortable for you? Kimberly contends that is actually a good thing! By definition, a business should be profitable and in an ever-changing economy, it is vital to consider how we value our work, time, and most importantly, the value we provide to our clients. To level up and scale your business, Kimberly challenges you to stop thinking of photography as a commodity and, instead, cross the bridge into making every session special and step into creating a true luxury brand for your business.  How? Listen in as Kim gives actionable steps to take to help shift your money mindset into thought processes that will increase your bottom line. You'll learn how to: Stop pricing from your own pocketbook. Get uncomfortable (in a good way!) with your pricing. Base your pricing on actual math and see the stories that numbers are telling. Value yourself and your time. Build trust with your clients to send the message that your products and services are very much worth the price you are charging. Understand the energy of money.   Here's a glance at this episode: [2:58] - We all have our own feelings about money. Your views on money are developed by many components and impact your decision making. [4:10] - Money is just a piece of paper and in the world of cryptocurrency, it is just an agreed upon value. [7:10] - When digital photography came along, many people became photographers and eventually led to photography becoming a commodity. [9:31] - The way the “shoot and burn” model is used is to create disposable imagery. [11:53] - There are so many elements that come together for a finished product. The commodity is the digital file, but the finished piece is on the wall or in an album. [12:45] - Many women have started their work in photography and Kim believes that undercharging for their work is a result of why they became a photographer. [16:06] - Numbers tell stories and help you make decisions. [18:28] - Kim shares the metrics she uses and pays close attention to. [19:40] - There is a shift that must take place if you do not have a money mindset. It is uncomfortable to charge what you are worth with the commodity mindset. [21:00] - Kim advises to avoid pricing based on your own pocketbook. [23:01] - You might think that you would never spend an amount of money on something, but it is because you can create it. [25:08] - Initially, Kim priced her services and products based on her competitors' pricing. [27:01] - It is harder to make risky decisions if you don't have support or a “safety net.”  [28:03] - If consumers see your low pricing, they may think that your work is not valuable. [32:56] - Knowing you need to make changes but not knowing what the changes should be can be very scary. [34:49] - On the flip side, sometimes money causes some decisions to be easier to make. [37:51] - Consider all of the little things that go into your time. [39:16] - Recognizing her own buying behavior changed the way Kim priced her services and products. [41:06] - “Shoot and burn” is okay, but bringing in more money will be tougher. [43:02] - Kim describes some of the extra things you can do to level up to luxury. [46:03] - The first step is to raise prices and then you can get creative in building more value. [48:39] - The intangible elements to a luxury brand are often not considered in pricing. [50:23] - The only success in “shoot and burn” is volume. [51:42] - Figure out the things that make people want to come to you. It isn't the commodity, it's the service. [54:02] - Think of all the pain points of your ideal client and provide a solution right at the start. [55:17] - Your mindset will shift you from “commodity in better packaging” to true luxury. [57:20] - Photographers who are the most successful have amazing relationships with their clients. [60:12] - For many luxury clients, time is what is most valued. [63:17] - When thinking about your ideal client or the client that wants it all, ask yourself if there is anyone else that offers the experience you provide. [65:02] - Make your rules based on the bulk of your clients. [66:19] - We all have things that are gifts and they come easy to us. But they also become easy for us to devalue in ourselves. [67:57] - Get uncomfortable with your prices. [70:53] - Just because you have your system working like a well-oiled machine, doesn't mean you should charge less because it takes you less time. [72:03] - Allison references a questionnaire in the highly recommended book Secrets of Six-Figure Women by Barbara Stanny. [75:06] - Using a personal experience, Allison demonstrates the importance of intrinsic value of yourself and your business. In this episode of Happily Holistic, Amy talks to Barbara Huson (formerly Stanny). Barbara is an author, financial therapist, and wealth coach. She focuses on teaching women to empower themselves. Barbara grew up in a wealthy family with little knowledge about money. She was told by her dad not to worry, but that changed when her husband of 15 years started to gamble her inheritance. After her divorce, she found herself with 2 million dollars in taxes for illegal transactions her ex-husband had made. Through many books, classes, and interviews, Barbara was able to climb out of financial disparity and turn her earnings around. By the time her book, Secrets of Six Figure Women, was released, Barbara was making more than six figures. She says that her success was divinely ordained. During the podcast, Barbara breaks down the difference between making money and being wealthy. We learn what some six-figure women are not doing to secure their future and how we can all implement strategies to change our own bank accounts. Barbara defines an underearner and shows us key differences between an underearner and an overearner. She goes into the biology of why patterns and new habits might push us to be more financially successful. Link https://www.barbara-huson.com/ https://www.barbara-huson.com/books-and-products/

Have you ever noticed women tend to feel guilty more often than men? Whether it's taking a day off or saying no to our children, there's a lingering little voice inside us that second-guesses the decision we've made.    Well, friends, Valorie Burton is here to help us give up the guilt! Valorie is a talented writer, but more than that, she's dedicated her career to researching how women can lead happier lives, be more successful, and, finally, let go of the never-ending guilt that threatens to hold us back.   In today's episode, Valorie and I talk about the concept of false guilt and why it's so important for women to understand their true callings from God. She also shares some practical strategies that we can implement right now to help us break free from the draining and sneaky cycles of guilt.    Stick around for the whole episode because we discuss:   What false guilt looks life in our everyday lives and how to spot it before it starts How to identify spiritual guilt and what to do about it Why conversations about guilt are essential in our relationships How parents can reconcile guilt brought on by the pandemic    Favorite quotes:   1. The thing about guilt is that if we allow it to take control, that's when it becomes a problem because guilt is a message. 2. Oftentimes we need to notice when our guilt is triggered but also label your guilt.   3. We have to push through those feelings of guilt and be honest with ourselves. Because God will break those clouds open and that sunshine starts to come in.   4. It's important to notice that your joy is missing. Notice what guilt is doing to dampen your joy and be willing to accept what is.    Great things we discussed:    1. Valorie Burton 2. Let Go of The Guilt 3.Curious George 4. Hi! I’m Shari Roberts, and I’m passionate about insurance! Actually, my passion is helping people, and I do that by making sure they’re covered with the best health insurance plans that fit their needs. My clients view me as a trusted advisor, not an insurance salesperson. And I take that role seriously. Customer service is in my blood. I started working in the insurance industry when I was nineteen, and I learned the value of providing people with superior service. It starts with listening. Every time I hear someone else’s story, I learn and grow from them. I’m truly interested in what’s going on in my clients’ lives, and learning more about them helps me figure out how to best serve them. Let’s face it. There are a lot of different insurance plans out there, and what makes sense for one person might not be the right fit for the next person. My dad and I founded Emery & Roberts, LLC. Since he’s in the Chicago area, our business partnership enables me to work closely with him. I’m licensed to provide health and life insurance plans in Missouri, Illinois, and Georgia. I’m certified in Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans, Medicare Advantage and Supplement plans, and in Chamber Federation/Anthem self-funded group plans. I’d love to help you find a plan that works best for your needs. On a personal level, I’m a morning person! I love all kinds of music, but favor musicals (Hello, Dolly!) and classical music. I grew up in the church, so I also like a lot of hymns. I play piano, and one of my favorite songs of all time is Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I’m in a Bible study fellowship group, and am also a rep with Juice Plus. I have two amazing daughters and two wonderful sons-in-law to go along with them. I’m the proud grandmother of three, and I adopted a little boy who is now four years old. I’m also a dog mom to my 75-pound crazy lab/greyhound rescue. In my spare time, I love to read self-help books! I recommend anything by Brené Brown, especially Daring Greatly. I also like Circle Maker by Mark Batterson, and Secrets of Six-Figure Women by Barbara Stanny.Contact me for a one-to-one, or for help choosing the right health or life insurance plan for you and your family. Ep. 035: Barbara Huson: Becoming Your Own Prince Charming - Women, Money, Power & Peace

The Peacebuilding Podcast : From Conflict To Common Ground

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2019 50:16

In this episode, Susan turns to the topic of money and its connection to women's empowerment and building a more peaceful planet. If you really want to understand what's going on in a complex system, follow the money. As earlier guests on the show have pointed out, our war system is hugely profitable to some (and very costly to all other people and life) – approximately $2 trillion dollars a year. We also have a virtual global epidemic of women's codependency on men – by one seasoned expert's estimation -- about 90%, and money is very much at the heart of this. Women stepping into their power is key to building peace and, as money is the currency of power, women getting smart about money goes hand in glove. That's where Barbara Huson comes in, not because she professes to be an expert on military expenditures or global peace but rather is the leading authority on women, wealth and power. Barbara is a bestselling author. She's written books like "Prince Charming isn't coming” "Secrets of Six Figure Women", "Sacred Success” and has been featured on many popular shows. Her own story is compelling: “I grew up relying on my father (the “R” of H&R Block), then my husband, to manage my money. But early in my marriage, I found out my husband was a compulsive gambler. And here's the insane part — I continued to let him manage the money because that's how scared and intimidated I was by money. It wasn't until a devastating financial crisis became a personal wake-up call. I got tax bills for over $1m for illegal deals my ex got us in. He'd left the country, I didn't have $1m, and my father wouldn't lend me the money. I had three daughters — one just a baby, and I was not going to raise them on the street. That's when I knew I had to get smart. And I did.” Some episode highlights: “Its not the money that's going to give us power. I don't believe that money gives you power. Money has no power. It's the process of who we have to become to be good stewards of our money. We have to become a powerful woman, and a powerful woman, is someone who knows who she is, who knows what she wants and expresses that in the world unapologetically.” Women are still so deeply codependent from so many centuries of conditioning. As a result, we will undermine ourselves in all kinds of ways such as care-taking dysfunctional men or putting ourselves in harms way, because of our deep belief that our survival simply depends on it. Throughout the episode, Susan and Barbara both share personal stories of how they fell into this trap and pulled themselves out of it. A second is, Barbara confirms what Susan has been hearing in different venues, that -- at least in the United States --70% of all wealth will be transferred to women in the 21st century. Women are earning more money and inheriting more, but not necessarily commanding this resource with confidence and power but rather often handing that job over to men. Finally, according to Barbara, when it comes to money, women are motivated by different things than men around money. They will yawn and glaze over when it's just about money for money's sake but get more fired up when they begin to see the power of helping their families and communities. That's why her target audience is women who want to create wealth because they are purpose driven and know, as Mother Teresa said, that it takes a check book to change the world. Given that, Susan takes the leap that if women get much smarter about their own money, we might also start paying attention and saying NO, like Leymah Gbowee did around war in Liberia, to the trillions of global annual military spending that is not addressing any of our very urgent planetary problems today. Please listen to this delightful person who is so generous and simply great fun to just spend time with. Whatever gender, you will gain a lot of insight.

Barbara Stanny, Author Prince Charming Isn't Coming Women can have a love/hate relationship with money. Even in today’s society, some women feel they are not going to be attractive to a mate if they are financially put together. Barbara Stanny and Kathleen delve into the notion that women are still waiting for Prince Charming to rescue them financially instead of empowering themselves to learn about investments and money management. Listen in as they discuss the importance of busting this myth wide open so that women of all ages can be more financially intelligent and set a good example for the next generation. Key Take Aways: Barbara explains that getting smart about money involves a three-pronged process – the outer work (education), the inner work (money mindsets), and the higher work (your life purpose). You need to take small steps consistently and you will see remarkable results. Money doesn’t come from what you earn, it comes from what you do with what you earn. The School of Self-Mastery: Business, Money, Life

Many people struggle with money, that's why we talk about it a lot. They yearn for the stability that it provides, but aren't sure how to go about finding it. Barbara Stanny's book, Secrets of Six Figure Women, profiles six figure earners - who were serial underearners until they changed their mindset – often because something drastic happened (e.g. a divorce, bankruptcy, etc). Stanny goes on outline the key traits of under earners, and since we talked to Barbara yesterday I thought it would be useful to share her insights here to start a discussion about an often-taboo topic – money. How much we're making, or how little we're making, and why. But first: What is a serial underearner? According to Stanny: “to repeatedly gain less income than you need, or than would be beneficial, usually for no apparent reason and despite your desire to do otherwise.” Simply put, an underearner is anyone who earns below her potential.Underearners aren't all poorly paid, however. You can make six figures and still fall into this under earner category. What distinguishes an underearner is that she/he should bring in more, and genuinely wants to, but for whatever reason, doesn't… It's estimated that one out of every three workers is an underearner, most of them women. Stanny goes on to outline the characteristics of the typical underearner: Underearners have a high tolerance for low pay. Underearners are willing to work for free. Underearners are lousy negotiators. Underearners practice reverse snobbery. Underearners believe in the nobility of poverty. Underearners are subtle self-saboteurs. Underearners are unequivocally codependent. Underearners live in financial chaos.
