"Dinner's ready!" Do you recognise that familiar call for everyone to gather round the table and tuck in? Whether it's a takeaway with friends or a family get-together during holiday seasons, humans have been eating together for thousands of years. But why? “晚饭准备好了!” 您是否记得那个熟悉的号召大家围坐在桌子旁吃饭?无论是与朋友的外卖还是节日期间的家庭聚会,人类一起吃饭的历史已有数千年之久。但为什么? The discovery of fire may have kickstarted communal eating for our hunter-gatherer ancestors, according to primatologist Richard Wrangham. Cooking a meal all those years ago required a social group – you needed someone to hunt the food, someone to protect the food from thieves or predators, and of course, someone to cook. And once enjoying the feast, evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar speculates that the fire's bright light may have given the humans longer nights and provided great opportunities for bonding over food. But modern humans don't face the same threats as we used to – we can cook and eat a meal by ourselves. So why should we still make group meals a ritual? In Dunbar's 2017 study 'Breaking Bread: the Functions of Social Eating', they found communal eating increased feelings of wellbeing and connectedness with the community. Despite this, the study found a third of weekday evening meals in the UK are eaten in isolation – the main cause being busy work schedules. Today's reality is that having meals together can be difficult. Time management, fussy eaters, and family tensions are all things that can get in the way. But, in an article about overthinking family meals, Susannah Ayre and colleagues write 'Five tips to ease the pressure', including dropping the need for perfection. "There is no shame in reheating a frozen meal" or "eating on a picnic rug in the living room". Sharing meals may look different today than it did for our ancestors, but the essence stays the same: food is more than just fuel. It can be a way to connect, share stories and strengthen bonds.

Have you ever noticed how you tend to eat more when you're out at a social event with friends, compared to when you're dining alone? You're not imagining it. Studies suggest that people consume significantly more calories in social situations, a phenomenon known as "social facilitation of eating".. In fact, a key study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people eat about 44% more calories when eating with friends compared to eating alone. Larger group sizes tend to lead to even greater food intake. This is why preparation is so important. And by preparation, I mean having a mental strategy for each social occasion. This mental prep work is 90% of your plan for success and sticking to your health and weight goals. It's ironic, isn't it? We spend so much time getting ready for social events, picking out the perfect outfit, doing our hair and makeup, getting our nails done, but we rarely give a thought to how we'll handle the eating and drinking part of the event. We just hope we behave ourselves or that we'll “be good”. But hoping to behave in a social situation with tanilizing food and drink and people urging us to eat, my friends, is like taking a butter knife to a showdown. It's not enough. So in today's episode, let's get you prepared and armed with a solid strategy for your next social event. I'll be talking about how to prepare to manage yourself as well as those friends of yours who want to keep plying you with food and drink. Grab your party favor and come on in! Have you ever sat down and had a good argument with your body? It's possible and let me tell you I've been doing it often as I've been working on something for the past couple of months. I want to share the thing I'm working on because I think part of pushing through the external diet rules in our heads is learning to do more food matching. Food matching is when we give our body what it's asking for in terms of nourishment. That's what I've been doing, really listening to my body's internal wisdom and trying to eat what my body is telling me it needs. Our bodies are very wise and know what we need to balance our nutrition but the trick is learning to listen to them.Did you know that mothers of babies born prematurely have different breast milk produced? It contains more protein, fat, salt, and iron, which is exactly what a premature baby needs to flourish. The mothers' bodies do that instinctively, they just know what nutrition is needed. And our bodies continue to know what we need, we just start overriding them with shoulds and should nots and diet dos and don'ts and emotional hunger decisions instead of actually listening. Food matching only occurs in the presence of actual physiological hunger which is why we need to push through all the external programming to figure out when we're truly hungry and then ask ourselves what we truly want to eat. I'm going to talk about how to identify true physiological hunger so we can separate physical hunger from emotional or social hunger. If you're struggling to lose weight, things probably get even more complicated when you're out with friends or at a family cookout. We eat differently when we are with other people, compared with when we eat alone.Sometimes, other people can influence how we eat and our food choices in a variety of ways. Overeating may seem normal in certain situations, and we tend to fall in line with the norm so we don't feel awkward. In this week's episode of JJ, we're going to discus:How to not be influenced by how other people eatMy recommendations for finding balance when it comes to eating in social settingsResources:Download my FREE Shopping List Guide & Template_____________________The Journey Journal is a spin-off of my main podcast, The Beating Diabetes Lifestyle Podcast: Helping Diabetics Make Lifestyle Changes to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes. _____________________Connect With MeTo submit a question or join my mailing list, use the information below to connect with me.Web - beatingdiabeteslifestyle.com Email - hello@beatingdiabeteslifestyle.comInstagram - @beatingdiabeteslifestyle Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/beatingdiabeteslifestyle HiHo - https://hiho.link/g/beatingdiabeteslife_____________________©2022 Oscar Camejo - The Beating Diabetes Lifestyle

Healthy eating can certainly pose a challenge when you're around certain people or in a certain place. Think about the last time you went out with your friends or family. Did you make choices that were in line with your healthy lifestyle goals? If you didn't, did you feel guilty or restrict afterwards? Eating behavior is strongly influenced by social context. We eat differently when we are with other people compared to when we eat alone. Our dietary choices also tend to reflect similarities with those that we surround ourselves with…especially when eating together. Given that, it's important to understand how, and why, who we dine with affects what we eat. We understand how hard it can be to make healthy choices when you're around certain people or in a specific social setting. This doesn't mean that you can't ever be in social settings ever again. We are going to give you some strategies to think about and use to set yourself up for success when participating in a social gathering. “At the end of the day, the big aspect of going out to these restaurants is to spend quality time with the people that we love. And so how do you do that? By being present. You never have a better time with someone at the restaurant if you eat more food. What's going to determine whether you have a good time or not is not the quantity of the food that you're going to be eating, it's going to be determined by your level of presence with that person.” - Luckie Sigouin Welcome to The Fit Vegan Podcast, I'm your host, Luckie Sigouin! Today, I am going to talk about some tips and tricks that I personally use when eating in social gatherings or meetups. As vegans, it can get a bit tough for us to eat in certain social situations. The thing is, it doesn't have to be difficult! That's why today, I am sharing with you how I navigate those situations and keep my healthy lifestyle while having fun with other people. In this episode, we cover [00:01 - 08:19] Planning Ahead is Key [08:20 - 13:16] It's Not About the Quantity of Food, It's About Your Presence [13:17 - 16:18] Not Everyone is Cheering for You, and That's Okay [16:19 - 20:13] Sharing Healthy Food with Others [20:14 - 27:43] Surrounding Yourself with People Who Understand Your Mission Key Quotes “You have to live with you 24/7, so the decisions that you make need to allow you to feel good in your body 24/7. Again, this is your skinsuit that you've got to take care of. No one else is going to take that skinsuit, so you have to take care of it and make sure you're comfortable with it, because you have it for the rest of your life.” - Luckie Sigouin “I'm a big believer that we can all accomplish whatever it is that we want, as long as we have the level of dedication, commitment, and are willing to take an action and be patient.” - Luckie Sigouin About me My name is Luckie Sigouin; I am the founder of Fit Vegan Coaching and the Fit Vegan Blueprint program's creator.
