This is my third recent episode using a 1943 US Government reference, "National Socialism" which was the playbook for Nazi Germany. In today's episode, I go over the Nazi Pledge of Allegiance and the Nazi's "Duties of the Party Comrade." I highlight the dangers of being exclusively "group think" while also highlighting the shortcomings of being too focused on YOU the individual while ignoring any responsibilities to the larger group as in your country. What we need is both--rugged individuals who can and will come together for the betterment of the country at large. Here's another warning in my quoted reading about what happened when a proper balance was NOT maintained. Blind party loyalty in the US to Democrats or Republicans without regard to "your individual opinion" is fatally flawed in my opinion. Look back. Learn. Move forward.Source: "NATIONAL SOCIALISM: BASIC PRINCIPLES, THEIR APPLICATION BY THE NAZI PARTY'S FOREIGN ORGANIZATION, AND THE USE OF GERMANS ABROAD FOR NAZI AIMS" by Raymond E. Murphy, Francis B. "National Socialism has no aggressive intentions against any European nation." -Adolf Hitler, Proclamation opening the party congress at Nuremberg on September 11, 1935.More from my WWII government resource which is essentially the playbook for how Hitler and his Third Reich took control. So much of this story revolves around carefully constructed propaganda--and some of it coming out of America with Edward Bernays. Today's episode examines how the masses were controlled by slogans, certain repeated messages, and BIG LIES.Source: "NATIONAL SOCIALISM: BASIC PRINCIPLES, THEIR APPLICATION BY THE NAZI PARTY'S FOREIGN ORGANIZATION, AND THE USE OF GERMANS ABROAD FOR NAZI AIMS" by Raymond E. Reaching back into my rare WWII archives, today's episode cites "National Socialism" published in 1943. This US Government source exposes actual Nazi propaganda methodology and how the personal property rights of individuals were removed for the "good" of the state under the cloaks of "protection" of the people to "remove distress." Sound familiar?*I referenced one of my favorite used book stores Counter Point Records & Books in Los Angeles. If you enjoy vintage books, consider stopping here. Guest victim Liv join Jeff and sar once again to dig into the plot of "comedy" film Special Unit. Join us as we critique the film's humor, which often relies on offensive slurs and jokes about disability, and consider moments of insight and humour, particularly in its critique of ableism. Will this film warrant a Jerry Lewis Seal of Approval or is it an accidental piece of art? Content warning: the following episode (and the film covered) includes uncensored use of the r-word slur. As always, transcripts are available on invalidculture.com
Sar and Jeff are joined this month by guest victim and award-winning poet, Liv Mammone, to try and unpack this "screwball comedy" that watches like a bad episode of South Park that attempts to draw together disability, policing, and political (in)correctness! Garden Island is a thin limestone sliver, 5km off the coast of Western Australia. It was an idyllic holiday destination until it became an important part of the defence of Fremantle during World War 2, protecting the Cockburn Sound and Southern approaches to the port. It was also the training ground of the famous 'Z' Special Unit, who paddled their kayaks into Singapore harbour to attack Japanese shipping. Today it is home to HMAS Stirling and the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet Base West.

This makes him perfect for a special mission involving the secretive branch of the Garda that deals with leprechauns and fairies, namely fitting down a narrow hole. So begins Ronan's career with the Special Unit, and his relationship with those hard-drinking swindlers, the leprechauns. 24-OCTOBER-1943 While Serving with M Special Unit, Special Operations Australia, 2 Australian Imperial Force, Sergeant Leonard George Siffleet was part of a multi-national team trekking through Japanese-occupied New Guinea to set up a Coastwatch position over the recently captured town of Hollandia when his team would be ambushed and captured by a party of Japanese troops and local New Guineans sympathetic to the Imperial Japanese Navy. After two weeks of interrogation, Lenoard would be executed at the hands of the Japanese in potentially the only execution of a western soldier at the hands of the Japanese to be photographed in the act. The subsequent war crimes investigations after the war would be all the surviving Japanese sailors involved to justice, though the man who delivered the killing stroke on Leonard would be killed during the closing stages of the New Guinea Campaign. Len's body would never be recovered. He has six one-hour comedy specials currently running on Comedy Central, and his seventh special, Born With a Defect, spent four weeks on the Billboard Top Ten Comedy Chart. After years of experimentation with dark and personal storytelling, he debuted his one-man show “Norman Rockwell is Bleeding” at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles. It was from this performance that the dark comedy, “Titus,” was born on Fox. The show earned Titus a Writer's Guild nomination as well as an Emmy nomination, and Newsday called him “TV's most original voice since Seinfeld.” His second show, “The Fifth Annual End of the World Tour,” was released in 2007 to rave reviews. Titus tackled such difficult issues as the Iraq war, racism, pedophilia and even his father's unconventional and ridiculous funeral, where he, with his brother and sister's help, spread his father's ashes in a casino. These are issues most comedians would run from, but Titus never walks into the familiar. “Love Is Evol,” Titus' third one-man show, deconstructs relationships in a way no comic has ever attempted. Titus wades into domestic violence, plastic surgery, custody and all aspects of the nightmare relationships. This groundbreaking comedy special premiered on Comedy Central on Valentine's Day. The album and dvd were released on February 15th, 2009. Titus claims that “this show will either fix your relationship or destroy it, and either way, you're welcome.” “Neverlution,” aired on Comedy Central on July the 4th, 2010. Titus takes no prisoners in this special, tackling the problems of our country, one joke at a time. He quotes, “every joke is a tiny revolution.” Titus declares that it's time to take our country back, namely from today's spoiled children, prescription medication, the media, technology and terrorism. Titus' fifth special, “Voice In My Head,” aired on Comedy Central in October 2013. This lighthearted show details all of Titus' biggest screw-ups, including a hilarious story about his first job as Darth Vader for children's birthday parties. “Angry Pursuit of Happiness,” which premiered on Comedy Central in 2015, is Titus at his best, and he leaves no stone unturned in his relentless pursuit for the true meaning of life. Titus covers everything from the Pope, the Boston Bombing, to his Dad's awkward, yet hilarious ED problem. In one of his most epic and darkly funny bits, Titus solves the nation's problems by “Arming the Children.” “Born With a Defect” was released in 2017, and held on the Billboard Top Ten Comedy Chart for four straight weeks. Titus claim is, “If you have kids, this show is 90 minutes of therapy. If you don't, it's 90 minutes of birth control.” Titus is currently performing his newest one-man show, “Amerigeddon,” to sold out theaters across the country. Titus shone in 2007 as the lovable character, Brody, in ABC's “Big Shots.” He shared the screen with Dylan McDermott, Michael Vartan and Joshua Molina as a successful CEO who had total control in business, and no control in his relationship. Inspired by such greats as Woody Allen, Steve Martin, and Cosby, who wrote, directed, produced and performed, Titus has sold ideas to NBC, ABC, FOX and Comedy Central. In 2013, Titus formed his own production company, Combustion World Industries, and produced his two most recent comedy specials, “Voice In My Head” and “Angry Pursuit of Happiness.” His first feature film production, “Special Unit,” wrapped in March of 2016, and is about four disabled detectives. Titus describes it as “The Shield with handicapped people” and is planning for release in January 2017. After watching Christopher Titus perform live, there is no doubt that he is one of the best comics working today. With the complete package of comedy, acting and writing, there hasn't been a performer like him in a long time. Michael Brookes and David Wilson talk about their recent article, A failed success: the Barlinnie Special Unit, which came out in International Journal of Prisoner Health August 2020. They consider this unit, to most appearances highly successful working with men who the rest of the scottish prison service had struggled to contain, and why it ultimately closed. The conversation extends to thinking about why some highly creative organisations succeed and others fail. Professor Michael Brookes was formerly Director of Therapeutic Communities at HMP Grendon where for eleven years he was the clinical lead within this accredited therapeutic community prison. Until the states, the local police agencies, the district attorneys, the United States Attorneys, and the Attorneys General of the various states join in the battle it will be fought to a stalemate. The insurance industry cannot successfully fight insurance fraud alone. Insurance industry sources estimate insurance fraud from lows of $80,000,000,000 ($80 billion) a year to highs of $300,000,000,000 ($300 billion) a year. Regardless of which, if any, estimate is accurate the amount of money going to insurance criminals is staggering and approaches no less than 3% to 10% of premium collected. Every two weeks Zalma's Insurance Fraud Letter publishes lists of convictions. The major volume of such convictions deals with Medicare and Medicaid fraud. Basic property and casualty fraud convictions are seldom described except when the perpetrator confesses or pleads guilty. Few go to trial. Proposal Insurance fraud is not a local problem. It is a depletion of the wealth of the entire country. The lawyer for the Department of Insurance of each state is the State Attorney General. A special unit could be established in the office of the Attorney General, funded with the monies taken from the insurance industry to support the war against insurance fraud. This unit should be given a simple mandate: File and prosecute every insurance fraud brought to the unit by the Fraud Division that has a better than 50% chance of success. The unit should not concentrate its efforts on major insurance frauds. Those can best be prosecuted by major fraud units already existing in the District Attorney's offices and in offices of the US Attorney. The state's unit should concentrate on prosecuting every-day insurance fraud, the frauds of opportunity that take 90% of the money paid to fraud perpetrators, in the range of $5,000 to $50,000. Single counts should be prosecuted. When prosecutors file multiple charges against individual defendants the case becomes a major action requiring a great deal of time to prosecute. Judges and juries do not want to be involved in a prosecution that takes months to prosecute. If there are multiple counts available, the prosecutor should charge only the one where the evidence of fraud is overwhelming. If the jury finds for the defendant the prosecutor can charge the next count continuously until the statute of limitation runs. If all available are charged in one case the prosecutor will offend the judge and jury and the defendant will get mercy from the jury. Overcharging prosecution is as bad as not charging at all. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/barry-zalma/support
After Philadelphia police shot and killed a man who threatened them with a knife, Rick Jensen callers were outraged that they didn't first tase the man (only 1/3rd of Philly police have tasers) and demanded to know why police were called and not mental health professionals when the family called to say the man was suffering from such. New Castle County's Police Department has a Special Unit designed to avoid such shootings. You'll hear about it on this podcast, taken from a live Rick Jensen Program.

Tread Perilously closes out "Tread Safely" month with a case file from the Special Review Unit -- the best episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit ever aired, "Identity." When Manhattan SVU detectives are called to the scene of a man who fell off a building, they discover his junk has been bitten off. Since the man was a member of a local gang, this appears to be a pretty simple case. But once Detectives Stabler and Benson dig a little deeper, they discover nothing can be simple in case involving twins, a sex therapist, and the world's worst behavioral science experiment. Special Review Unit Captain Charlie Wright joins Justin and Erik as they discuss one of the finest hours of television ever committed to film. Justin and Charlie agree on it containing a "V.C. Andrews" energy. Justin explains the the Society for Creative Anachronism. Charlie clarifies Sister Peg's role and gets hyped for the upcoming Stabler-focused Law & Order series. Justin tries to understand why anyone would run away from Christopher Meloni. A Star Trek discussion breaks out. Erik recalls when Stabler had a tough time dealing with teenage suspects and the team discovers Munch is a proponent of rights for graffiti artists.
this week me and Dorian sat down and watched Christopher Titus' film Special Unit. although I respect Titus as a comic, this movie sucks a fat dick. it sucks so bad we couldn't even get one whole hour out of shitting on it so instead we shit on each other for the last half and decide that we let the listeners now.

Tread Perilously once again opens the case files of the Special Review Unit for a recent episode of Law & Order: SVU called "We Dream of Machine Elves." When a tourist wakes up in Central Park wearing only a sheet and screaming about the "Machine Elves," Manhattan SVU detectives focus their investigation on a radical New York therapist who encourages the heavy use of drugs like DMT and re-experiencing trauma. He also happens to be a former professor of Detective Amanda Rollins. Will their past allow her the chance to learn the truth about his unusual methods? Or will Rollins once again fall for an older man of seeming authority? Captain Charlie Wright returns to remind Justin that he's met Detective Rollins. She also decries the episode's lack of momentum. Justin finds the cast changes surprising while Erik marvels at a decade of Meloni-less SVU. Carisi gets dubbed "good hair guy." ADA Barba continues to be missed. Charlie offers a number of great New York safety tips. Erik tries to understand vaping. Both he and Justin get lost remembering Season 2 of The Wire. Officer Katriona Tamin gets her first performance review and Tread Perilously chooses its favorite brands of oat milk.
This week, Chris and Høney review “Special Unit” starring Christopher Titus and Billy Gardell, a cop comedy where the LAPD is required to hire 4 disabled undercover officers & their training officer is the worst cop in LA. In Teatime with Honey, we’re discussing the recent block on the Alabama abortion ban by the ALCU, the new rules issued by the White House allowing foster/adoption agencies to deny placement into LGBT homes, and an Arizona elected politician who has been running a “Handmaid’s Tale” style baby mill. Tread Perilously once again opens the case files of the Special Review Unit to look back at the Elliot Stabler years of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit with an episode called "Cage." When Manhattan SVU detectives are called to the scene in which two children survived their van crashing into the river, they discover the kids have severe reactive detachment disorder. The boy stabs Detective Elliot Stabler with a pen, but Detective Dani Beck finds herself bonding with the little girl (special guest star Elle Fanning). Soon, they discover the seedy underworld of private adoption agencies, large foster care homes, and the terrifying notion of a rebirthing ceremony. Will Dani be able to help the little girl or will she be caught up in the child's nightmare? Captain Charlie Wright returns to discuss an episode she's never seen. She, along with Erik and Justin, consider the ravages of time and the acting of a young Elle Fanning. Justin tries to convince the others that the Ohio accent is the other "neutral" American accent. The group discusses the benefit of swaddling for children, pets and adults. Justin's infatuation with Christopher Meloni goes into overdrive. Erik's speech impediments get the better of him when he tries to say "Detective Dani Beck" and Charlie learns about the Snowbank Killer.
There are few comedians today who can do TV, movies, podcasting and still retain their raw, uncompromising voice over multiple formats and Christopher Titus (TITUS, SPECIAL UNIT) has proven tenfold that he's one of them. Having delved into the darker realms of his family and upbringing and incorporated it into his standup and other projects, Chris has tapped into the vein of comedy that stings, heals, and relates. From the hardships of creating comedy in today's sensitive culture... to how Chris' art reflects his real life... to taking an old TV movie concept and writing, directing, producing, and starring in SPECIAL UNIT... Titus shares all in a conversation that Adam, Joe, and Arwen never wanted to see end. Dr. Arwen answers a very apt "Hollywood Therapy" question about public speaking (something everyone on the show can relate to) and Chris answers our beloved Crypt Keepers' "Viewer Mail" questions in this truly hilarious episode. Tread Perilously rounds out 2018 by convening the Special Review Unit for a look at the most recent episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, "Alta Kockers." When a hip young author is found dead after their big reading at an important bookstore, Lieutenant Olivia Benson declares the murder a hate crime as the author was apparently male despite presenting female. SVU detectives continue to misgender the person even as the team discovers the victim was not the author of the novel Blue Barracuda. The investigation leads to a very nice house somewhere in the Bronx owned by an older Jewish gentleman and his brother. Did they kill author Bobbie O'Rourke or was he really the bartender at Molly Malone's who died of diabetes in 1975? Captain Charlie Wright and Executive Assistant District Attorney Louis Allred join Justin and Erik to discuss the episode and point out a certain flaw in literary fiction. The group warns against walking around the Meatpacking District, though Charlie recommends the Whitney Museum. Justin declares Ninjas as the largest ethnic group in Hell's Kitchen. The casual transphobia throughout the story gets called out. Charlie tries to find a flaw in the perp's thinking. Erik reveals his hatred for new ADA Peter Stone. And in a rare case for Tread Perilously, the Special Review Unit decides Judd Hirsch and Wallace Shawn deliver Emmy-worthy performances.
Scott talks with stand-up comedian Christopher Titus about his comic persona, performing and writing on stage, creating his Fox TV show "Titus," and his feature film, "Special Unit."
Tread Perilously once again opens the case files of the Special Review Unit with an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit known as "Wildlife." SVU detectives are called to the scene of a murder victim who was apparently mauled and licked by the perp -- an exotic tiger. The trail leads to a night club called "Supple," a z-list rapper named Gots Money and, oddly enough, an international animal smuggling ring. Detective Elliot Stabler allies with the US Fish & Wildlife Service to go undercover in that dangerous world and uncover who let loose the tiger upon the initial victim. But will his actions endanger an even more wide-ranging investigation? Executive ADA Louis Allred joins the SRU squad to make Rudy Giuliani and the Charmin Bears added guest stars. He, Erik and Justin attempt to determine the first 33 rules of the internet. Erik warns against Scarface posters. The quality of Gots Money's flow gets criticize. Justin asks one of the most important philosophical questions of the day: "Why would Kanye lie?" Erik explains why Creed is a film apart from the rest of the Rocky film series. Justin recommends the CHUD theaters of New York and presumes "tiger" is a codeword for a very specific sort of sexual partner. Also, Justin discovers he can do a good Jimmy Stewart impression.

The guys welcome comedy superstar Christopher Titus to the bar! You better believe things are going to get controversial! Will you learn anything from this podcast? It's four guys in a bar... what do you think?
When I first spoke with Christopher Titus, he was coming through a turning point in his career. It was around 1997 or '98, and he was playing the Funny Bone Comedy Club in Buffalo, NY, where I was writing for the Buffalo News. Titus had been staging a show called Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding at theaters in Los Angeles, and he was trying to make it work in comedy clubs. It impressed me not just because it was funny, but because he wasn't afraid to talk about a lot of heavy topics, to let the serious points be serious and then bring people back up with a punch. In that show, Titus talked about his mother's suicide and his father's often rough treatment of his kids and alcoholism – Titus was cured of that by falling into a bonfire and having his friends abandon him. The stories sometimes painted a bleak picture of his parents, but he also preserved their dignity. He credits his mother with helping create him as a comedian, and made a point of mentioning that he never went hungry, even though his father sometimes did to feed to family. That show became a model for what Titus has been doing ever since, writing thematic, 90-minute specials with the feel of a one-man show and the punch of a club act. His new one, Amerigeddon, is about bringing America together in the age of Trump, at a time when the public discourse is about separation. I've only spoken with Titus once since Buffalo, for the Boston Globe in 2010 when he was working on his Neverlution show. I was happy to see he was popping into town for a one-night-only gig at Laugh Boston on a Wednesday night, and was able to sit down with him before his soundcheck to talk about Amerigeddon, politics, his new movie Special Unit, and a lot more. At the end of the conversation, keep listening for “When the War Began,” a track from Matt York's new album, Between the Bars. York is a talented songwriter and performer, and he's also next week's guest on the Department of Tangents Podcast.
Mike Rankin and Christine Manika welcomed head Saint Xavier football coach Mike Feminis to the program to recap the Cougars' 30-28 victory of University of Saint Francis.

Comedian Christopher Titus called into Hoppe Hour. He talked about his career in comedy, expecting to be told "NO" in the entertainment business, and to talk about his new movie "Special Unit."
Comedian Christopher Titus first gained notoriety for his comedy special "Norman Rockwell is Bleeding," where used his own warped version of the American family dynamic as a topic. Now he's promoting his eighth special, "Amerigeddon," a show where he hilariously aims to “put to country back together."Titus also talks to us about his upcoming feature film, Special Unit, described as "Agents of Shield with midgets and handicapped people." He tells us what inspired him to do that show, which features many disabled actors in it.We also delve into what started him down the path to comedy. Christopher Titus is playing the Dayton Funnybone for two shows on Weds, June 28th. More information can be found at christophertitus.com
Adam and Ben talk with longtime stand-up comedian, Christopher Titus (@TitusNation). They discuss his upcoming film Special Unit, and the meaning behind it, plus his current tour. Christopher Titus is probably best known for his half-hour show Titus which aired on FOX-TV between 2000-2002. but he's been an established stand-up doing dark, edgy, personal storytelling on stage for years. It was his one-man show Norman Rockwell is Bleeding - which dealt with being "raised by a raging alcoholic and a mentally ill mother" - that not only set him on a different path with his material, but got him the TV deal. The show was critically acclaimed and performed relatively well, but a fateful meeting with the network president resulted in cancellation and those wounds have yet to completely heal. Titus gets deep into the nuts-and-bolts of his comedy path, including how he evolved on stage, and why every comic needs to discover how to "spew your pure truth." We also talk Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Peter Farrelly and why he is such a huge Prince fan. No...really...a HUGE Prince fan. Chris Titus is at the Brea Improv as of this posting (June 9-11, 2016) and will be filming his special "Born With a Defect" on July 9th at the Central Theatre in Escondido. For more tour dates go here. Check out Titus Podcast here, on iTunes or Podbay.. (They'll be live at Flappers in Burbank on August 16th!)
