Charles is joined by longtime friend and concert enthusiast Andy to recap their 24/7 Live Music Challenge — an ambitious attempt to see 24 live music events in just seven days, inspired by "Concert Joe" Sarkis of New York, who famously attended 1,000 shows in a single year back in 1992. Based in the Chicago area, Charles and Andy plotted their week using ChatGPT to build efficient nightly itineraries, hitting 24 shows across 16 different clubs without ever buying tickets in advance. They quickly learned that averaging three and a half shows per night was brutal — three shows in one night put them behind schedule, while four was a struggle to pull off even once, let alone repeatedly. The conversation walks through each night in detail, from a jazz set at the historic Green Mill and a punk show at Subterranean to blues legends at Buddy Guy's Legends and Blue Chicago, a folk night at The Hideout, and a storytelling-meets-live-band show at Martyrs that reminded them both of NPR. Along the way they battled real tornado warnings that knocked out power at multiple venues, forcing last-minute audibles, and stumbled into unexpected magic — snagging the last two seats at nearly every stop, watching Buddy Guy hang out in his own club ahead of his 90th birthday, and catching an incredible impromptu bass solo from a musician neither of them had heard of before. By the end of the week, Charles and Andy had hit their goal of 24 shows for a total of just $313 in cover charges (well under the $1,000 budget Andy had braced his wife for), capped off by seeing Santana and the Doobie Brothers at a Tinley Park band shell. Standout moments included the high-energy punk band Squint and Kansas City act Season to Risk at The Liar's Club, while the sheer physical toll — late trains, torrential rain, and blown-out eardrums — made clear why neither of them plans to repeat the full challenge. Still, both agreed it was a rewarding way to break out of their musical comfort zones, discover new venues worth revisiting, and appreciate just how much dedication (and money) serious "concert chasers" like Concert Joe put into their passion. BANDS: Able Baker, Amyl and the Sniffers, Cherry Decay, Dog Caller, Dot, Grateful Dub, Greasy Gravy, Groove Witness, Jerry's Middle Finger, Public Opinion, Santana, Season to Risk, Squint, Tunnel, liverwhip, the Doobie Brothers, La Croix Mystique, Majesty. VENUES: Andy's Jazz Club, Beat Kitchen, Blue Chicago, Buddy Guy's Legends, Cobra Lounge, Fitzgeralds, Garcia's, Jazz Showcase, Martyrs, Salt Shed, Shubas, Subterranean, The Empty Bottle, The Green Mill, The Hideout, The Hungry Brain, The Liar's Club, Tinley Park (band shell). What changed? This episode traces the modern UAP timeline and its ties to national security—from the 2004 Tic Tac encounter and the Gimbal/GoFast videos to the Plant 42 drone incursions, the New Jersey drone flap, and the Western U.S. orb investigation. We also examine the emergence of new national security initiatives, including Avi Loeb's UAP Advisory Council, a newly discovered guarded subterranean property near a sensitive Western site, and a newly obtained clip that could be related to the disappearance of retired Maj. Gen. Neil McCasland. Are these isolated events—or part of a frightening shift in the government's approach to UAP and national security?Subscribe (free) to ATU on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@allthingsunexplained _______________________Hosted by Dr. Tim Mounce—best-selling author, Audible narrator, professor, and coffee addict. Many podcasts far more professional than ours have offered discrete segments covering different topics, so this week we decided to carefully organize the episode—wait, no we didn't; we're just rambling again. But we do begin with a small tribute to Jane Yolen, both a great writer and a great friend, which leads into some musings on how reputations are made and sustained. We then touch upon the recent Nebula Awards, the role of small presses like Subterranean, and some exciting new books we're reading, including Jacly Moriarty's Time Travel for Beginners. By our standards, all this is carefully planned and laser-focused.
After a long run as a consulting and client leader at Ipsos by way of GfK, Tim Spenny is now at Conveo helping to chart the future of qualitative research at scale. But once upon a time, Tim was fronting original and cover bands all around Chicago playing classic venues like the Double Door, the Subterranean, Big Horse and more.Tim traces his journeys through both insights and music and shares his optimistic vision for the future of the insights practice.

What happens when the battlefield drops 30 feet underground into a collapsed building, ancient tunnel system, or booby-trapped basement? You don't just “clear” it — you assess it like a critical trauma patient while everything tries to kill you.In this raw, no-fluff episode, Dennis sits down with Sean McKay — 20+ year veteran of dynamic high-threat rescue, nonlinear physics guy, and the man who turns “impossible” subterranean ops into repeatable TTPs. Fresh off 48 hours with zero sleep (and still caffeinated to the gills), Sean drops a masterclass on why underground environments are exponentially more dangerous than anything on the surface. From atmospheric sucker punches (O₂ depletion, CO₂ buildup, toxic off-gassing) to structural collapses, comms blackouts, mental exhaustion, and the brutal reality of casualty extraction in spaces tighter than a coffin, this episode is packed with battlefield-proven principles you won't find in any manual. If you run rescue, work in SOF, or just want to understand what happens when the fight goes subterranean — this is required listening. Key Takeaways1. Treat the subterranean environment like a patient — use the exact same rapid/ongoing assessment template medics already know by heart. 2. Atmospheric threats (O₂ depletion, CO₂, displacement gases) are silent killers; monitor early and often. 3. Speed is security, but only after deliberate recon — one small “worm” goes first, the team enlarges behind him. 4. Improvise like your life depends on it: rubble, wood studs, high-lift jacks, and building debris become your cribbing and shoring. 5. Plan for mental exhaustion — 45 minutes underground feels like 8 hours; isolation and darkness will mess with your head. 6. Always identify safe havens and load-bearing walls as you move; never trust foreign engineering. 7. Casualty extraction multiplies complexity exponentially — every medical intervention costs time and movement. 8. Worst-case heuristics save lives: assume the worst, then back out from there. 9. Geology and soil type tell you whether a collapsed structure is worth occupying or a death trap. 10. Best practices are written in blood — create your own on the spot using context and innovation.Chapters- 03:10 – Why Subterranean Is the Ultimate Nonlinear Nightmare - 05:29 – Real-World Examples: Afghanistan Karez, Tunnels, Collapses - 07:25 – Atmospheric & Environmental Pathology (The Silent Killers) - 09:09 – Structural Collapse, Shoring & Improvised Solutions - 11:41 – Scenario: Occupying a Collapsed Multi-Story Basement - 13:36 – Patient-Assessment Template for the Environment - 15:31 – Tunnel Rat Recon Tactics & Atmospheric Monitoring - 17:56 – Sustainment, Mental Exhaustion & Comms Hell - 20:22 – Heuristics, Worst-Case Planning & Spidey Sense - 23:16 – Real Heuristic Examples from the Field - 26:11 – Destabilization, Cribbing & Load-Bearing Principles - 27:19 – Fire Chief Mindset – Maintaining Global Awareness - 29:45 – Safe Havens, Injuries & Team Support - 30:56 – Gases, Ventilation & Natural Airflow Hacks - 35:12 – Fans, Vertical Ventilation & Building Features - 38:52 – When to Walk Away – Red Flags & Geology Clues - 41:31 – Water, Electrical & Urban Subterranean Hazards - 44:48 – Casualty Extraction in Confined Spaces - 48:39 – Creating Best Practices on the Fly For more content, go to www.prolongedfieldcare.orgConsider supporting us: patreon.com/ProlongedFieldCareCollective or www.lobocoffeeco.com/product-page/prolonged-field-care

Are we literally sitting on top of a classified, subterranean empire? In this episode of the Red Eye Report, we are digging deep into the phenomenon of DUMBs—Deep Underground Military Bases. We start with the cold, hard, declassified facts: massive, multi-billion dollar continuity-of-government bunkers like Cheyenne Mountain, Mount Weather, and the infamous Greenbrier Resort bunker that hid in plain sight for 30 years. But once we establish the government absolutely builds high-tech subterranean cities, we take the Mag-Lev train straight into the fringe. We crack open the files on the rumored joint human-alien genetic labs at Dulce Base, break down whistleblower Phil Schneider's legendary 1979 subterranean firefight with 7-foot Greys, and examine the Los Alamos patents for nuclear-powered "Subterrene" tunnel-boring machines. Grab a shovel and let's go down the rabbit hole. theredeyereport.com
In today's conversation (Part 1 of 2), Geoffrey Drumm ( @thelandofchem ) returns to explore a radically different interpretation of the Great Pyramid as an industrial system rather than a tomb. The discussion walks through a step-by-step model involving water flow, gas reactions, and staged chemical processes inside the structure. Along the way, we connect architectural features of the pyramid to known principles of fluid dynamics, catalysis, and acoustic effects. The result is a provocative rethinking of ancient engineering and what these monuments may have actually been built to do.Part 2: https://youtu.be/yCf6_AGJr_MPATREON https://www.patreon.com/c/demystifysciPARADOX LOST PRE-SALE: https://buy.stripe.com/7sY7sKdoN5d29eUdYddEs0bHOMEBREW MUSIC - Check out our new album!Hard Copies (Vinyl): FREE SHIPPING https://demystifysci-shop.fourthwall.com/products/vinyl-lp-secretary-of-nature-everything-is-so-good-hereStreaming:https://secretaryofnature.bandcamp.com/album/everything-is-so-good-herePARADIGM DRIFThttps://demystifysci.com/paradigm-drift-show00:00 Go! "Now based in Ireland, @novasdemise is a Lithuanian-born visual artist, producer and DJ. Aside creative direction duties for @doubletakerecords he has studiously, tenaciously developed an individual sound wherein an encyclopaedic enthusiasm for hardcore is intertwined with experimental sound design and influence from the wider continuum of bass music. This counterbalancing of a purist's ear and sonic experimentalism has distilled into ND's own sub-genre of avant-hardcore, exemplified by the track HALF LIFE on DT's Torrent comp. Subterranean atmospherics, industrial ambience, hadal drums and the eerie sound of occasional respiration, the tune exemplifies an effect where deconstruction leads to magnification - a track where it is in absence that legitimate futurity is sighted. As a DJ, ND has played across storied venues like Corsica Studios, White Hotel and Venue MOT, for some of the true pathfinders of contemporary club experimentalism (SYPHEN, Hypoxia, K.O - of which ND is a member). His sets encompass the superlative aptitude for hardcore aforementioned, he brings a library unique in its fuel for exploration of a pummelling darkness, replete with post-club and crossbreed. 2024 has seen the emergence of the duo helveticacock (alongside Double Take colleague vorem ipsum). Combining destructive post-club and hardcore with a pop sensibility and irreplicable, satirical aesthetics, out comes this prodigious twosome."
The first Art Brut album, Bang Bang Rock & Roll, came out in 2005. The buzz started slowly, but then Pitchfork gave it an 8.9 rating and things took off from there. Four more LP's followed from 2007 to 2018. We got a chance to talk with bandleader Eddie Argos about his musical career and his love for Chicago. Art Brut is touring this spring, playing that first record as well as a few more greatest hits. Episode 207: Snow And Ice. And The Mail Still Got Delivered. Snow Suite And More. February 2, 2026 Hello again and thanks for joining me for more of those Tales Vinyl Tells. Well, it's been snowy and icy here in middle Tennessee, just a wee bit outside music city, and yesterday I scraped 2” of ice off 3 cars and it was lots of fun. I've been in the pest control business here in Jasper, Georgia, for a long time. I've seen a lot of folks walk out into their garage or look at their baseboards and feel that sudden sink in their stomach. You see a little pile of wings, some “mud tubes” climbing up your foundation, or—worse—you actually see the wood crumbling. The first thing I want to tell you is: Take a deep breath. Your house isn't going to fall down by tomorrow morning. But, you can't ignore it either. Here in North Georgia, we deal primarily with Eastern Subterranean Termites. They are hungry, they are persistent, and they work 24/7. If you've spotted signs of these “silent destroyers,” here is exactly what you should do. 1. Stop and Observe (Don't Spray the Raid!) Your first instinct might be to grab a can of bug spray and soak the area. Please, don’t do that. Subterranean termites live in massive colonies deep underground. If you spray the ones you see on the surface, you might kill a few hundred, but you'll alert the rest of the colony. They'll simply seal off that tunnel and pop up somewhere else in your house where you can't see them. You want a professional to see the active “trails” so we can track them back to the source. 2. Save a Sample If you see winged insects (swarmers), try to catch a few in a jar or a plastic baggie. Termite swarmers look a lot like flying ants to the untrained eye, but the treatment for ants is a whole lot different than the treatment for termites. Termites have straight antennae and equal-length wings. Ants have “elbowed” antennae and wings of different lengths. 3. Check for the “Mud Tubes” Termites are soft-bodied insects. They need moisture to survive, so they build little tunnels made of mud and saliva to travel from the dirt into your wooden floor joists. Look along your foundation, in your crawlspace, or behind your HVAC unit. If you see what looks like dried veins of Georgia red clay climbing up your wall, you've got a highway leading straight into your home. 4. Look for the “Hidden” Signs Sometimes you don’t see the bugs; you see their leftovers. Keep an eye out for: Bubbling paint: It often looks like water damage, but it's actually termites eating the paper backing of the drywall. Hollow-sounding wood: Tap on your baseboards or windowsill. If it sounds like a drum, the inside has likely been hollowed out. Piles of wings: After they swarm, termites shed their wings. You'll often find these on windowsills or near light fixtures. Why “DIY” Doesn’t Work for Termites I'm a big fan of folks being handy around the house, but termites are one area where you really need a pro. To actually protect your home, you have to create a continuous barrier around the entire perimeter or use a specialized baiting system that the termites take back to the queen. At Faith Pest Control, we don’t just “spray.” We investigate. We look at the moisture levels in your crawlspace and the “conducive conditions” (like mulch piled too high) that invited them in to begin with. The Faith Pest Control Promise If you're seeing activity in Jasper, Talking Rock, or anywhere here in Pickens County, give us a call. We offer a 100% “Make You Happy” Money Back Guarantee. If you aren’t satisfied with our service, we'll come back and make it right, or we'll refund your money. It's that simple. Your home is likely your biggest investment. Don’t let a bug the size of a grain of rice eat away your equity. The post Don't Panic, But Don't Wait: What To Do If Termites Are Eating Your House first appeared on Faith Pest Control.

When it came time to decide what to follow up our 100th episode, the guys made a comment that we should interview a prominent podcaster and blogger in the vintage camera realm. With a long list of guests already, we thought hard about who we've missed, who is one person who has helped grow GAS as much as any one single person can? Anthony spoke up and said, "Hey, it should be Mike"! While I had my doubts about how interesting a whole episode about me could be, I thought that I do like to tell stories, why why not?! Joining Anthony, Paul, Stephen, Theo, and Mike this, our 101st episode are returning callers A.J. Gentile, David Palumbo, Fernando Villava, Ira Cohen, Mark Faulkner, Pat Casey, Rob Lattimer, William Ponder, and Will Pinkham. Over the course of the episode, I field a variety of questions from how I got started, what is my while whale camera, what cameras never clicked for me, what was an example of a camera that I felt overwhelmed trying to shoot. Paul gets me to revisit my 2023 trip to Los Angeles when I went through the collection of Kurt Ingham and what it was like going through such a large collection. We get into camera accessories, especially how difficult it is to adapt Kilfitt lenses and that the "Rear Window" Kilfitt lens was never made specifically with an Exakta mount, we talk about what is a good first camera is, and we get into how I am resisting the urge to collect carbon filament light bulbs and Nixie Tubes. Amazingly, we make it through the nearly 2 hour run time without repeating too much of what's been covered before, and while doing so managed to cover a whole lot of GAS! As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. We will be back shortly with our next episode, which is going to be two days before Christmas. We'll call this one our "holiday eggnog episode" where we recap the year and open up the call in lines for whatever you all want to talk about. Episode 102 will be recorded on Tuesday, December 23rd at 7pm Central Standard Time and 8pm Eastern Standard Time. Make sure you set your calendars and look out for the show announcement at the usual locations and be prepared to join us! This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit chadcrouch.substack.comThe view from Morgan Lake looks more like Montana than Oregon to me. It's big sky country.Just 10 minutes up a gravel road from the eastern Oregon city of La Grande, Morgan Lake is mysteriously a world apart. From its shores you see only rolling prairie giving way to distant mountains. Situated on a ridge, Morgan and its sibling Twin Lake have an implacable mirage-like quality. The surrounding topography—the absence of enfolding contours—doesn't readily explain their presence. There is no incoming stream to feed them. Subterranean springs pump water from an active aquifer hidden below.I found myself on the lake shore on a breezy March Saturday. People were fishing nearby. The wind billowed through the Ponderosa Pine canopy. An osprey occasionally called out. Nuthatches passed through. Midway through White-throated Sparrows sing in the quiet, followed by a wayfaring Winter Wren.As I've shared in the past, I like to program my releases in batches. This is the last in a trilogy located in the Pacific Northwest, east of the Cascade Range. It's lodgepole and ponderosa pine country. Once again, the main character in this soundscape is the mesmerizing whisper of the wind in the pines. This particular day was dynamic; the breeze ebbed and flowed. Occasionally it howled. The arrangement is super sparse. Honestly it would likely fail as a piece of music without the wind. The ratio of solos to duets is about 50/50. Most of my arrangements are comprised of at least duets, most of the time. I think I was responding to the sense of loneliness I felt in the physical space. The chord progression is progressive. Each part adds another chord and more harmonic complexity. There is a touch of minor color, which sounds a little unsettling. Though it was recorded in early spring, it strikes me as a wintry listen. I hope you enjoy it.Morgan Lake is available under the artist name Listening Spot on all streaming platforms today Friday, December 5th, 2025.
Music travels faster than ever, yet the connections that shape it still depend on patience. Sense of the Substrate, the new release from our own Griff Fulton under his Aspetuck alias, feels like the result of that slow exchange. Out on Konstrukt, the Nijmegen label that has built its identity around subtle consistency, the kind of releases where artwork, sound, and intention all seem to breathe the same air. Aspetuck's latest record fits naturally into that lineage. Following his standout LP on Oslated earlier this year, Griff returns with a five-track EP that combines warmth, precision, and patience into a sound that feels unmistakably his own. The record moves through slower tempos and unforced grooves, where rhythm has room to stretch and melody can take its time to unfold. Our premiere, “Subterranean Rhizome,” sits right in that zone, a track that glows rather than burns. It opens with interlaced percussion and a gentle breakbeat that sets a calm propulsion, gradually joined by flickering chords that rise like light through shallow water. Every element feels hand-shaped, balanced between the tangible and the ethereal. By the time the main riff arrives, you're already somewhere else entirely, in that rare headspace where the body listens and the mind moves. Sense of the Substrate arrives November 21 on Konstrukt, available digitally and on vinyl. It's another chapter in a story that values connection over noise and craft over speed, the kind of record that reminds you why physical formats, and the people behind them, still matter. @aspetuck www.instagram.com/aspetuckmusic/ @konstrukt-5 www.instagram.com/konstrukt__ Write up by @gilleswasserman Follow us on social media: @itsdelayed linktr.ee/delayed www.delayed.nyc www.facebook.com/itsdelayed www.instagram.com/_____delayed www.youtube.com/@_____delayed Contact us: info@delayed.nyc
