Today's episode is the first of a week's long celebration of 12 months of the podcast and my decision to include male guests as part of the podcast going forward. Some would say a long overdue addition, I would reframe that as, perfectly timed….Today's guest reflects the journey that I have been on over the last 12 months, since the podcast was launched exactly 12 months ago today. My first episode was a solo episode, the 2nd was my very first guest…Penny Power OBE. So it seems only fitting that my 1st male guest, should be Penny's husband, Thomas Power.Thomas is a powerhouse of a man, and more than that he is a super connector. Building Community inside Corporates and Connecting Business Owners is his and Penny's focus. Uniting the two being the outcome. Thomas passionately believes in Community Led Growth (CLG) supporting people to grow themselves, their health, their mind, their business and increasingly their organisation. All three of his and Penny's children support them in their endeavour of Community Building in three different ways.Key TakeawaysHolding non executive and consultant positions in several boards, Thomas Power have seen companies succeed and failed. Even in 15 companies, only two of them made it the other 13 didn't. And that failure wasn't necessarily anything to do with one's ability, skill or desire, but a lot of it is to do plainly with the reason most companies just don't make it. Thomas described billionaires as people who have tremendous skill. They have tremendous ability, incredible minds, incredible thinking ability, negotiating ability, workability, and all have incredible memories. Brutal even to some extent. There are a lot of factors why financially successful individuals are brutal or aggressive on their approach. These driving force can be perhaps the absence of parental support, being unloved as child, having no recognition or no identity. And whatever it may be creates a burning desire to create an outcome, positively or negatively. The profile difference between a billionaire and a millionaire is interesting and absolutely massive. It's common for billionaires to always working against the clock, trying to get things done before they die. Whereas millionaire profiles are trying to reach a state of comfort for their families or their lifestyles. To have a better relationship with money, your self worth should always comes intact first. Prof. Baker takes us through the history of the movement against sexual harassment. Governor Cuomo has resigned due, in part, to allegations of sexual harassment by him on about a dozen women. But what does the term sexual harassment mean? According to Professor Baker, its legal definition derives from the intensity and pervasiveness of the harassment. And amazingly, in the last 46 years since the term "sexual harassment" has been coined, the rates of sexual harassment have pretty much remained the same. But progress, however slow, is being made after the me-too moment. Join me in this podcast conversation with Professor Carrie Baker of Smith College, whose research focus is on women's legal history, gender and public policy, and feminist activism. She is the author of The Women's Movement Against Sexual Harassment, a 2008 book, and Sexual Harassment Law, a 2020 book.

In this episode, using his song choices, we plot his journey from suburban Solihull: through the early days of UK computing with ICL, Amstrad and Alan Sugar; the triumphs and challenges of the business network that was Ecademy, to the present day. In his usual honest and disarming way, Thomas opens up about the highs and lows in his life and career and leaves us in doubt that his profile should really read "endeavoring, dependable, cub scout." Today it hosts a raft of services for the motorist but is still best known for its Roadside Assistance. ICL (International Computers Ltd) was the last major British Computer Company. In the 1980's they sold a successful mini computer called the ME29. The ME29 was an orange color which was officially known as "Hot Tango" - never has a company and a color been more inappropriately matched. ICL was acquired by Fujitsu in 2002 In the late 1980's Amstrad (which stands for Alan Michael Sugar Trading) had a substantial share of the PC market in the UK. Amstrad was once a FTSE 100 company but since 2007 it has been wholly owned by Sky UK whose Set top boxes it manufactured. Passage: Gal. 5: 22-23 Sermon by Thomas Power on Thursday, Nov 8th, 2018 in Founders' Chapel, Wycliffe College, Toronto. In a recent speech Bank of England Governor Mark Carney said that crypto assets are not and cannot be money - but they must now be regulated and become a fully fledged part of the financial system nonetheless.  It turns out the European Banking Authority has a very different plan - and says otherwise and that over-regulation is a bad idea. Innovation should be supported and encouraged to flourish! The SEC says there's no such thing as a token which doesn't look like a security - and seeks to regulate everything in sight.  Meanwhile the Swiss regulator (not to mention the state of Wyoming) clearly recognises digital tokens based on blockchain technology can have a range of purposes and represent a range of things including services (or utilities) and assets. Central banks and regulators may all be used to being the authority, setting the rules for everyone else, but - in this globalised world they can't all be right! So who's view will win out? Well given that this is a darwinian battle the answer is simple - the fittest the most functional. Having earlier taken a look at Mark Carney's speech in an article "MONEY AND THE FUTURE OF THE BANK OF ENGLAND: HAS THE CRYPTO BATTLE BEGUN?" (at https://irishtechnews.ie/money-and-the-future-of-the-bank-of-england-has-the-crypto-battle-begun/) in this  episode I debate the global situation and the future of all this with thought leader Thomas Power and Blockchain expert Manie Eager. With a postscript on the EBA's intervention, which came just before release.

This week we have the closest we'll probably get to having royalty on the Business Growth Podcast.   Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Penny Power OBE.   Penny is a published author, one of the UK's most inspirational female entrepreneurs and a highly engaging and sought after speaker.   Penny founded Ecademy, the UK's first social network for business, a fore-runner to LinkedIn which followed in 2002 and FaceBook in 2004.   She authored her book in 2009 entitled “Know Me, Like Me Follow Me: What Online Social Networking Means for You and Your Business.   Penny has been married since 1990 to Thomas Power (our guest last week LINK) and has three children: Hannah born in 1992, Ross in 1994 and TJ in 1997.   Penny is no stranger to the media spotlight and regularly speaks at conferences and events and writes for press across the globe.   Understanding the small business market has resulted in Penny being sought out to advise small business owners, and the Government on issues relating to the challenges that are critical to small business success.   Recently Penny has been speaking and commentating on the changing face of society and the affect the Born Digital Generation should have on the business environment if they are given a chance to enter the commercial world and listened to by business leaders. Penny talks about the asset of Social Capital and how we must seek to grow this as well as our human and financial capital.   More recently Penny has been working on an innovative new idea, The Business Café® (LINK) which will bring social networking to the High Street via a network of Business Cafés dedicated to SME's, run and managed by Young Adults being trained in giving Digital and Fintech Skills to the local business community.   This is yet another fascinating conversation on how your business can stand out in the digital age regardless of whether you yourself are a fan of social media or not.   This is a wide-ranging and fascinating discussion that will reward repeat listening. Enjoy the show!
