EP274 What We Allow Shapes Who We Become: Boundaries, Self Trust and Confidence

Ownit! Powercast

This episode explores the powerful connection between what we allow in our lives and our level of self-trust and confidence. Often, we don't realize how tolerating disrespect, poor communication, or neglecting our own needs undermines our sense of worth and leaves us feeling ungrounded. The discussion highlights how both external boundaries—such as speaking up and setting limits—and internal boundaries, like practicing self-discipline and saying no to distractions, are essential for cultivating a calm and confident mindset. We also dive into how failing to set these boundaries keeps us stuck in a low-level but constant state of fight, flight, or freeze, making it harder to feel in control. By taking small steps to identify what we're tolerating and practicing new patterns of behavior, we can rebuild self-trust, strengthen our confidence, and move from survival mode to thriving in a more grounded and intentional way. Three Takeaways 1.     What we tolerate—whether from others or ourselves—has a profound impact on our confidence and emotional well-being. 2.     Internal boundaries, such as self-discipline, are just as important as external boundaries for feeling calm and in control. 3.     Small, consistent changes in what we allow can have a ripple effect, helping us shift from survival mode to living with more confidence and peace.   Boundaries aren't about control— they're about protecting your peace and reinforcing your worth.   Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! In this episode, Barb sits down with our favourite co-host and life coach, Denise Torgerson to delve into the concept of "tolerations." These are the little (or big) things in life that we put up with, often without realizing how much they drain our energy and prevent us from thriving. Denise walks us through identifying these hidden tolerances, understanding why we keep them around, and, most importantly, learning how to let go. Mela shares her own experiences with how tolerating small annoyances can accumulate, and become a larger toleration that leaves you feeling burnt out. We're excited to now be part of the SuperAging News Network, the most authoritative online source of news, trends and ideas on longevity and the SuperAging Revolution -- getting older without getting old. One of the common things clients bring to me for coaching is overwhelm and work/life balance. They feel like they're doing too much, for too many people, and the resentments are starting to set in, not to mention the exhaustion.  We get down to business and the end result is them saying no more often, and setting some boundaries and having hard, but necessary conversations.  In this minisode I'll help you DIY this by taking inventory of unhealthy or unnecessary tolerations, and committing to making changes there, as well as noticing what you say YES to when you take that action. "Every toleration we hold onto is like a program running in the background, draining our energy and holding us back from living our freedom. It's time to reboot, clear the list, and become the version of ourselves that takes care of what's important. Zap those tolerations and watch as your mental space and self-image transform." - Ben EasterAre you tired of feeling overwhelmed and burdened by the little things in life? Do you want to break free from the energy-draining monster known as tolerations? In this week's episode, Ben and Paige Easter dive into the important topic of tolerations. They discuss how tolerations can drain our energy and hold us back from living our best lives. Drawing from an analogy of computer system maintenance, they emphasize the importance of identifying and addressing these tolerations to free up mental space and boost productivity. The hosts share practical strategies, such as creating a list of tolerations and prioritizing them based on values alignment and impact. They also highlight the transformative power of taking action on these tolerations, not only in terms of clearing our physical and mental space but also in shaping our self-image and identity.Key Takeaways:Tolerations are the things in our reality that we are unsatisfied with or that require our attention.Tolerations can lead to feelings of overwhelm, burnout, and confusion, as well as negatively impact our self-esteem.Writing down our tolerations and creating a list helps us identify and prioritize them.Taking action to address tolerations not only frees up mental space but also reinforces our identity as someone who takes care of things.Quotes:"There's just this aspect of reality where you just like you decide that you're going to take care of the things that are important to you to take care of in your reality. And there's something so both kind of nervous and intimidating about that decision, and also at the same time, so liberating once you've made the decision, you're just like, yeah, you know what? I take care of the things that are in my reality that I'm going to take care of." (5:40 | Paige Easter)"Sometimes just getting them out of your head, you can be like, oh, that's actually not that hard to do. I can just handle that. And you might feel inspired just writing the list down. You might notice that you get a little inspiration to go take care of some things because they're now present in your mind and aware. And as you write the list, you start to imagine yourself doing it." (25:03 | Paige Easter) "Every once in a while, go grab something off that list. If you do one a week and pull one of your tolerations off a week, you'll feel amazing." Buckle up, Podsters! We've got a hard pill for you to swallow today but don't worry, we're coming at you with humor and kindness as we talk about tolerations - and how what you are tolerating could be impacting your life. Even the tiniest annoyances can drain your energy and these tolerations can be those sneaky little things you deal with every day that have a massive effect on your well-being. The wet towel on the floor, the way someone important to you continues to put something off, or maybe it's repeatedly pronouncing your name wrong. We're talking about everything from that pile of jackets cluttering up your favorite chair to those stubborn pounds you've been carrying around for years. Think of it this way: tolerations are like grains of sand. A tiny grain becomes a pebble, which grows into a boulder. It's all about the ebbs and flows of what you can and are willing to tolerate. Take it from us, a pound gained here and there, letting things slide in your relationships, the friend who is passive-aggressive about your success… As they happen, they may not seem like a big deal - but they add up, and eventually…BOOM! It's time to deal with those small irritations and tolerations before they turn into huge, life-sucking boulders. Going solo for today's episode to talk about tolerations. One definition of toleration is the allowing, permitting, or accepting of an action, idea, object, or person you dislike or disagree with. I'm talking about the things that irritate you, but you put up with them anyway. Maybe because you don't see a way around them. Or maybe because they're irritating, but not enough to do something. First I'm going to share some places in your life where you might be tolerating. Then I'll talk a bit about why you're allowing yourself to live with them. And then of course, what you can do to improve your situation. Quick warning – once you see what you're tolerating, you can't unsee. Today's episode is sponsored by Zen Rabbit. We all have unpleasant conditions in our lives that cause us stress. We may try to ignore these situations, but they still affect us. If the condition could be eliminated, it is called a toleration. You cannot change what you tolerate, but for those of us who struggle with codependency, we tolerate A LOT (and for much too long). We often have relationships with people who gaslight and have narcissistic type traits because at the core, we attract people who LOVE our focus on them. Codependents are OTHERS focused. And because we get our self worth from OTHERS, what they think, fixing them, helping them, serving them, managing them-we push our own needs and desires to the side and just tolerate things that we shouldn't. Part of our recovery is to learn how to set the boundaries required, to eliminate these tolerations from our life. These could be internal boundaries or external boundaries-both apply here. In this episode I'm helping you understand what you might be tolerating in your life that is causing you to not stand for yourself and how you can start to become aware of some of things in your life that might be required to do a bit of a spring clean and detox them out. Maybe a relationship that has long expired, a friendship who is critical and dismissive of you, missed workouts and excuses, a closet full of clothes you never wear that is overwhelming to you, a pantry full of sugar laden items that take you off course from your diet, or mistreatment from your teenager. Listen to this episode to discover: What tolerations are The reasons why you might be tolerating (aka-it's not your fault, it's your programming) How to build awareness around what you might be tolerating How to start eliminating tolerations The 7 D's of how to detox from your current list of tolerations. Through the art of healthy boundary setting, we can learn to step into our sovereignty and speak our truth so we can have our needs met and live FULL LIVES. I hope the strategies and tips I provide in this episode will help you step into your inner leader and begin to not realize that there are just things in life that need to go. “A toleration is something that is put up with or endured; it is a burden and eats up time, money, and mental space.” -Krista Resnick "It's a toleration for you if it creates frustration, drains your energy, or distracts you from what is really important."-Krista Resnick "People who clear up tolerations often find that it opens up space for their creativity and intuition."-Krista Resnick "In order to start eliminating tolerations you first need to know what they are. Three Tools to Create Positive Change in Our Life

In this episode, I share three tools that can be helpful in our journey towards making positive changes in our life: 1) the Identity concept, 2) Tolerations, and 3) Passive versus Massive Action.   Our identity, the little things that drain our energy, and the actions that could actually be keeping us from achieving our goals can be pivotal to creating change. The Identity concept and Passive/Massive action can be applied to any type of goal and tolerations can be helpful in creating more energy in our life.  Identity Concept Outcome vs. Identity, as read in the book Atomic Habits by James Clear When setting the goal, it’s really important to start by looking at who we want to become in achieving the goal.  Who and what do we want to be?  Get clear on the identity you are searching for and then prove it to yourself with your habits. Passive and Massive Action Passive action is important but mostly focuses on consuming (e.g. books, courses, training)  Massive action is the opposite of passive because it is creating. Passive action is a form of procrastinating and usually keeps us from taking massive action where we are creating and doing things that create clarity and momentum.  Tolerations It’s important to determine and remove tolerations or energy drainers in our life.  Tolerations are the seemingly small things in our life that we tend to dismiss and that drain our energy (e.g. the squeaky door, the uncomfortable desk chair) These can really bring us down. As a result, we may not have the energy for our goals. Tolerations may seem small but they add up. Quote:

Have you ever had one of those days when you wake up and immediately you dread having to get out of bed? Before your feet touch the floor a list of things you really don’t want to tackle start floating through your mind. Or, you recall a recent interaction that didn't sit well with you and you feel those feelings all over again. Your mood is heavy, but you’re determined to make it a good day. So, you start the coffee, turn on the shower and focus on positive things. You pick up some steam and before you know it, you’re on with your day until… …it's mid-morning and you’re already excited for your lunch break. Even though you’re trying to remain positive, your nerves are on edge and you could use the time away. You have lunch and are able to breathe a little easier while plotting how you’ll make it through the rest of the afternoon. But your energy never fully returns and you pull yourself through each meeting or task as if you are hiking up a mountain. Before the end of the workday, you’ve given up on being productive and you move on to the typical distractions: Facebook, videos, the news, etc. If you’ve been seeing too many of these days lately, don’t lose hope! There is a solution. But like most remedies, it will take a little work to see actual results. Your energy is consumed by the things you tolerate Your energy is impacted by more than just your diet, sleep, exercise and aging. It is also impacted by how closely you live according to your values and the life you want to be living. If you are putting up with or avoiding something in your life that goes against your values or the life you want to live, you use a lot of your energy to be "okay" with it. The things you tolerate weigh you down, and it takes a substantial amount of energy to put up with things that annoy you. It also takes energy to avoid addressing nit-picky problems you wish would just go away on their own. Often times this looks like saying “yes” when you really want to say “no.” Spending time with negative people, listening to gossip, being taken for granted, or putting up with people who are unreliable - these are all things that you may be tolerating. Tolerating can also look like avoiding a noise that your car is making or when the check engine light goes on. It could be a bodily pain that needs to be checked out or an appliance that doesn’t work as well as it used to. You might be avoiding your finances, your health or your relationships, even though they need your attention. The danger of letting things go Imagine you are holding a beach ball under water. If it’s deflated, this is no problem. You could hold it under the water all day with hardly any energy or effort being used. Now imagine that for each thing you are tolerating you blow one puff of air into the beach ball. Again, no problem if you’re only tolerating a few things. However, chances are you are tolerating more than a few things. Chances are you may be tolerating a hundred or hundreds of little things without even being consciously aware of it. What makes the things we tolerate so insidious is that, when you look at each one individually, it’s not that big of a deal. So, you dismiss it and it remains. You do this to countless things throughout the day and the busier you perceive your life to be the more tolerations build up because you tell yourself it’s not that big of a deal or you’ll deal with it later. Slowly, over time, that beach ball gets bigger and bigger. And it starts taking an enormous amount of energy to get through the day holding it underwater and pretending it isn’t there. Until one day, something comes along that demands energy you have been giving to the beach ball. It could be the figurative straw that broke the camel's back or it could be something big. Suddenly, you don't have enough energy to keep that beach ball underwater and it shoots out of the water and you lose it! You don’t have the energy to tolerate those things anymore and you wonder why you’ve put up with them for so long. If someone happens to be in close proximity to you when this happens, they will likely be the unsuspecting victim of your wrath – which you will later regret and apologize for. How to keep tolerations from creeping in To prevent the blow up, first and foremost, be vigilant. If something doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t work for you. When you address things in the moment, you’re able to do it calmly and in a matter-of-fact manner. This keeps the interaction or transaction low drama and thus quick and easy. Also, watch for when you try to convince yourself something isn’t a big deal and so doesn’t need to be dealt with or dealt with right away. Tolerations, individually, are typically not that big a deal so don’t let that be an excuse to avoid it. If it's something that will become a big deal if it is repeated indefinitely, it's a big enough deal to address the first time it happens. If you can’t deal with it immediately schedule when you are going to deal with it. Don’t say you’ll deal with it later with no plan to do so. A couple times a year I do a Tolerations Detox. This is a process I take my clients through to help them address and remove the things they are tolerating and avoiding in a simple and non-threatening manner, so they can maintain a high level of energy, confidence and motivation. I’ve seen this process work time and again. My clients make simple changes and find themselves flooded with the energy that has been missing for months or even years. With this sudden flood of energy, they start rearranging their offices, cleaning out their garages, or tackling other projects that have been neglected for some time. Tolerations are insidious things that subliminally annoy you and sap your energy so it's really important to zap them. While making a list of the things (big and small) you are tolerating may seem a bit negative, some magic gets to work when you do... Clicks And Leads is a "tongue in cheek" digital marketing Vzine by entrepreneur, author, podcaster, speaker, Nicola Cairncross. Mentioned in the Vzine Kardamyli, Greece On the blog Ideal Clients DIY, DWY or DFY? List Segmentation Are You Getting Paid? Entrepreneurial Loneliness Mental Models Automatic Customers Six Figure Mentors Review Own It! 207 | Buying A Business No Money Down Own It! 206 | Rhys Morgan: Podcasting From Scratch Vzine 79 - All Change Again! Prefer to read? Welcome everyone, it's Nicola here. And it's the Clicks and Leads Vzine and today I'm basking in the glow not only of some glorious sunshine, although I woke up this morning to pouring rain. It's one or the other here. It's nothing in between. None of that drizzle business. It's either pouring biblically or it's sunny. And yeah, it's absolutely amazing so I'm going out later on, which will be nice because I'll be able to sit in the sunshine. And the other thing that I'm basking in the glow of, is the deflected glow of a job well done. You know how around the house you get those niggly little jobs and, you know, I had some lights out in the kitchen and there was a light out over on those spotlights over here. And I just tried everything. I tried borrowing a step ladder. I tried getting my sister to stand on a chair. I tried getting my sister to stand on the work-top but neither of us could reach them and we couldn't work out how to get the lights out so we could go and buy some more. Finally, my landlord responded to my appeals and he came down with a very big step ladder and he kindly took all the bulbs out that were blown. I bought some more and he came back and put them all in again for me. So I'm feeling, you know, I'm feeling the joy of a toleration busted and it's an even more joyous thing when it's busted by someone else. So let's get on with the show, shall we? So I mentioned toleration busting in the intro and it's a very well known coaching tool that you sit down and you write down all the things you're tolerating. And the premise is that every toleration is a bit of an energy suck for you. So every time you look at that thing, like every time I turned my lights on and thought, "Oh, it's a bit dim in the kitchen", it was sucking a little bit of my energy out of me. And if you look around your house, there's all these things that you're putting up with and the point is that successful, wealthy people wouldn't put up with things, they would point at something and they would go,"Fix that" or "Get that done" or "Can we get that done?", and it would be fixed and they wouldn't have to look at it anymore. So it wouldn't be sucking their energy. So it's always a good idea to have a little list of things that you're tolerating and what magically happens, it happens every time I do this, every time I make a list of things I'm tolerating, someone comes along and fixes one or two of them for me. Or they just mention something that would fix the toleration or they say that they've seen something on eBay or in a local shop for example. Another thing I'm tolerating is my wood burning stove. It needs some caulking around the side of the inside bit that fits you where you shut the door. And I've had a guy around who put some caulking on and it promptly fell off again, and I've heard that you had to go to Kalamata to get caulking. But since then, I've just been occasionally aware that I need to find somewhere to buy caulking and a friend just popped up the other day and said you could get it in Kardamyli Arkwright's. So I'm going to drive over there and take a bit of the existing caulking and hopefully I'll be able to buy some more...

In this episode, Kim and Mike talk to Todd Tramonte about how you can organize your to-do list so that you can start to do more of what you love doing and less of what you don't.  Key Takeaways!   Todd works for a residential real estate company where they help a couple hundred families buy and sell homes in the DFW, Texas area. They operate in a unique way, like a law firm or an accounting firm would, with high levels of specialization. (1:11)   Master to-do list. He recommends that you get all of the stuff that you are trying to remember out of your head and write it down. This is your master to-do list. (3:19)   Once you discover your superpower or your unique giftedness, you need to be doing this all the time. Try to minimize everything that keeps you in the way of doing what you do best. (4:44)   Irritations, Tolerations, and Fascinations. Make a list of all the things in your business that you hate to do, called your irritations. Then in a different column, right down the things that you can tolerate doing, your tolerations. Finally, right down a list of all the things that fascinate you and bring value to other people when you do them, which are called your fascinations. (5:41)   With your irritations, you need to move them into 1 of 3 categories (9:28) Automate it. Take something that you must do frequently and automate it with technology or something else.  Delegate it. Make someone else do the task. Eliminate it. Take this task and get rid of it if possible, especially if it isn't necessary anymore to your success.    With your tolerations, you need to move these into 1 of the 3 categories from above: automate it, delegate it, or eliminate it. (11:41)   With your fascinations, try and do more and more of these tasks! (12:49)   Revisit these lists quarterly so that you can make sure that your tasks are still in the right columns. (12:56)   Everyone has unique different irritations, tolerations, and fascinations. Don't feel guilty about making someone else do the stuff that you despise, because that might actually be something they love doing.  (14:01)   Todd personally has delegated leading meetings that he had in his toleration/irritation columns to other people who used it as a way to grow as leaders and he got to spend that time doing more fascinating and productive things. Last year I had a few clients who were dealing with some “man problems”. In a nutshell, dating men who were unavailable to them. One was having a relationship with a married man, the other was on again-off again dating someone who had made it clear to her he didn’t want to commit. Both were in a pickle. This is what they were used to, it was their pattern. Whether the men were physically unavailable for the long term (married), or emotionally unavailable, these women just kept picking the wrong partners. Much science has gone into why we pick certain people. My favorite book on this is “Getting the Love You Want” by Harv Hendrix. Other interesting ones are “Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment”   and really there are just too many good books on this topic to mention. But, what I want to focus on today is not just who they were picking-- which I think for many of us is an unconscious thing that happens-- but more specifically, what they were tolerating when they were already IN the relationship and knew their partner wasn’t good for them. Because so many of us have been there, right? Personally, I can vividly remember sitting in my therapist's office with my ex-husband who at that time was still my boyfriend. We were in our mid-twenties and he was not ready to settle down. He would regularly stay out all night, roll home drunk at 6 am when I never knew if he was off screwing someone else or dead in a ditch somewhere (turns out he was screwing someone else throughout the majority of our relationship. Many, many someone else's). After years of this and other disrespectful behavior towards me and many months of therapy, my therapist said to me, “Andrea, I don’t think he’s ready to  change. You can either learn to tolerate it or leave.” He was sitting right there and he didn’t argue with her. We all knew it was the truth. I knew what I was tolerating. I chose the scraps of the relationship over me. I chose the marriage and the possibility of our future children together over my personal growth. I chose the inkling of potential I saw in him over my own self-respect. My two clients who were staying in those relationships had different circumstances, but were both tolerating bullshit. They were settling for crumbs. In our work together, we got to the bottom of why they were doing it (helpful, but not always necessary), and why they kept repeating the same pattern. They got clear on what they actually wanted and clear that they weren’t getting it from the men they were dating. I remember a scene from an episode in Sex In The City when Carrie is asking Mr. Big to “tell her she’s ‘the one’” and he can’t say it to her. If you’ve ever been in a relationship like that you know it was so much more than just him saying it. The agony on her face when he stands there awkwardly and the fact that she can barely look him in the face says so much. It’s so hard for me to watch that scene because Sarah Jessica Parker’s face say so much: I know you can’t commit to me, I know I’ve been tolerating it all, and I know I need to say goodbye to you. And I remember watching that scene in 1998-- five years into my own relationship where I was tolerating crumbs and wishing I had the courage she did. To follow my gut and say no. To love myself and walk away. I didn’t. But, my clients did. They both got the courage to say goodbye, and love themselves enough to walk away. Raise Hell, the 4-month online program is open for registration, my 4-month online program and one of the 4 modules is...TOLERATIONS. It may not be a relationship you’re tolerating that isn’t working. Maybe it’s work demands, or your inner-critic, or your own neglect for exercise. Whatever you’re tolerating, I’ve created curriculum to help you get to the bottom of it, support with action and helping you choose what works for you (no overly-high expectations!), and accountability. Because it’s so much better to do it with loving people who are in your corner cheering for you and being a soft place to land. I hope you join us.
