This is an interview with John Niven about his writing career, particularly his latest book O Brother, which was shortlisted for the 2024 Gordon Burn Prize.O Brother is about the suicide of his brother. While John was making his way in the music industry and then as a successful writer, starting with his novel Kill Your Friends, his brother remained in Scotland where his life was chaotic. He ultimately hanged himself in a hospital.John tells the story of their lives, but also investigates why his brother was left alone to be able to kill himself despite being suicidal. In the interview we talk about his efforts to obtain a transcript of his brother's 999 call that led to his admission, as well as how it felt writing about it, the impact on living relatives, and the way writers become observers even at the most tragic moments. We also talked about the nuts and bolts of any writing discussion, from his advance for Kill Your Friends, how he got his first book deals, how much he made from that first novel, his move into screenwriting, and the shift from fiction to nonfiction. You can buy John's books here: https://uk.bookshop.org/contributors/john-nivenJohn recommended Street-Level Superstar by Will Hodgkinson which you can buy here:https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/street-level-superstar-a-year-with-lawrence-will-hodgkinson/7680905And you can buy my books here:https://uk.bookshop.org/contributors/andrew-hankinsonThanks for listening.

John Niven is a Scottish author and screenwriter whose books include Kill Your Friends, The Amateurs, The Second Coming. The F*ck-it List, and O Brother.John discusses his favourite of Amis's novel, The Information, published in 1995. The Information follows two star-crossed writers, Gwyn Barry and Richard Tull. The pair have been friends since university, but now as their approach their mid years, Tull's once promising career is withering on the vine while Barry receives plaudits and more opportunities than he can manage. John explains how the novel has aged like fine wine for him, both as a reader and writer whose career has mirrored both Tull and Barry's circumstances, though he is pleased to say it has settled somewhere comfortably in the middle of the two.As John says, Amis occupied a rarefied place: a serious literary novelist who was at the same time incredibly funny. His hunch is that Amis will be read for decades to come. Time is, after all, the only true test of a writer's work. FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamis Hosted on Acast. Plus, as a new book about Glossier founder Emily Weiss gets everyone talking, we discuss why she left her company last year after a Glossier boycott, the criticisms of 'barely there beauty' and the Girlboss era. About Rich: Rich Robinson is EVP and Global Head of Synchronization and Media Original Music at Warner Chappell Music (WCM). In this role, he oversees music licensing opportunities for the publishing company's global business across film, television, advertising, production music, and more. Based in Los Angeles, he reports directly to Warner Chappell's Co-Chair and COO Carianne Marshall. He also played a key role in helping to launch the Creative Services department from the ground-up, which helps WCM's A&R, sync and digital teams identify new and untapped commercial and creative opportunities for its songwriters and rich catalogue of music. Robinson first joined Warner Chappell in 2018 as EVP of Sync and Creative Services, where he was responsible for leading the company's sync activities outside of the U.S. While in that role, his team was named Music Week's “Sync Team of the Year” in the UK, both in 2019 and 2020. Prior to joining Warner Chappell, Robinson spent five successful years at Warner Music, where he was VP, Sync of Warner Music UK and Europe. During his time at the record company, he placed a large number of tracks in major adverts, including the UK's coveted John Lewis Christmas campaign for two years running with songs from Lily Allen and Gabrielle Aplin. He also established and oversaw music supervision for films and TV, including Netflix's Residue, and feature length films such as Kill Your Friends and I, Tonya. Robinson started his career at Saatchi & Saatchi in 2003 as a Music Consultant, before moving to EMI in 2007 as Business Development Manager and quickly rising through the ranks to become VP of Sync.

Jim Piddock is an actor, writer, and producer, who began his career on the stage in England, before emigrating to the U.S. in his early twenties. He made his theatrical debut in the U.S. in “The Boy's Own Story”, a one-man show about a soccer goalkeeper, at the Julian Theatre in San Francisco. The show was an instant success with critics and audiences, winning Jim the Bay Area Critics' Best Actor Award. The show was then produced Off-Broadway and he quickly gained the attention of the New York theatre scene. That same year (1982), he was cast in Noel Coward's “Present Laughter” by George C. Scott, who directed/starred in the revival, which also featured Nathan Lane, Christine Lahti, Dana Ivey, and Kate Burton. The show was a big hit on Broadway and Piddock soon found himself appearing in a string of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including the original US production of “Noises Off”, “The Knack” at the Roundabout Theatre, and “Make and Break” with Peter Falk at the Kennedy Center. After replacing Frank Langella in “Design For Living” at the Circle-In-The-Square theatre, he moved to Los Angeles and has since appeared in a long succession of tv shows, such as “The Tracey Ullman Show”, “Coach”, “Max Headroom”, “The Twilight Zone”, “Murder She Wrote”, “Mad About You”, “Angel”, “ER”, “Friends”, “Crossing Jordan”, “The Drew Carey Show”, “Lost”, “Monk”, “Without A Trace”, “Dollhouse”, “Party Down”, “Law And Order: LA”, “Castle”, “Two And A Half Men”, “Children's Hospital”, “Mom”, “The Royals”, and “The Grinder”. He has also starred in several notable tv movies and mini-series, like “From The Earth To The Moon”, “A Mom For Christmas”, “She Creature” on HBO, and “The Women Of Windsor”. He appeared in his first movie in the top-grossing film of 1989, “Lethal Weapon 2”, in which one of his lines, “But…you're black” in answer to Danny Glover's request to emigrate to South Africa, became a catchphrase for the film. Other feature film roles soon followed, including notable appearances in “Independence Day”, “Traces Of Red”, “Multiplicity”, “Burn Hollywood Burn”, “Austin Powers 3”, “A Different Loyalty”, “Love For Rent”, “See This Movie”, “Love For Rent”, “The Prestige”, “Epic Movie”, “Who's Your Caddy?”, “The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising”, “Meet The Spartans”, Woody Allen's “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger”, “Get Him To The Greek”, “The Cold Light Of Day”, “The Five Year Engagement”, “1915”, “Think Like A Man Too”, and “Kill Your Friends”. But it is probably his diverse performances in the improvised Christopher Guest comedies “Best In Show” (as the Dog Show commentator with Fred Willard), “A Mighty Wind”, and “For Your Consideration” that he has gained the most attention as a chameleon-like character actor, barely recognizable from role to role. As a voice actor, he is most notable for providing the voice of Major Zero in the English version of the massively popular video game “Metal Gear Solid 3”, Bolero the Bull in the movie “Garfield 2”, and the fictional artistic director of Forever Young Films, Kenneth Loring, doing a hilarious commentary in the directors' cut of the Coen Brothers' “Blood Simple”. His voice work in animated tv series and in video games is extensive and includes “The Lion King”, “Extreme Ghostbusters”, “The New Batman Adventures”, “C-12: Final Resistance”, “Return To Castle Wolfenstein”, “The Lord Of The Rings”, “101 Dalmatians 2”, “The Bard's Tale”, “Dead Space: Downfall”, “Ben 10: Ultimate Alien”, Alfred in “Batman: Under The Red Hood”, “Batman: The Brave And The Bold”, “Skylanders: SWAP Force”, “Turbo FAST”, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. He currently released his best-selling book, “Caught With My Pants Down and Other Tales From A Life in Hollywood.” We are so grateful to have him as a guest on, “Black Canvas.”

Author John Niven joins us for the Friday night chat show! John Niven graduated from Glasgow University with a first-class degree in English LIterature. He went on to spend ten years working in the music industry, during which time he worked with acts like Travis, Mogwai and Sigur Rós. His first book was a novella entitled Music from the Big Pink, pubilshed under the guise of Continuum's acclaimed 33⅓ series of classic album guides. This blended fact and fiction in its account of the creation of The Band's The Big Pink. His experiences as an A & R man, during which time he passed up the chance to sign both Coldplay and Muse, formed the basis of his first full-length fiction, Kill Your Friends, described by the Independent as 'a bleak, scabrous and over-the-top satire on the excesses of the Cool Britannia period of the 1990s'. His second novel, The Amateurs, moved into the world of golf, with its story of an amateur who qualifies for the Open. His third novel, The Second Coming, courts controversy with its depiction of Jesus as a hippy layabout, entrusted with keeping an eye on Earth while God takes a much needed holiday. Unimpressed with his son's stewardship, God returns him to Earth to encourage less elfish behaviour amongst his creations. Jesus decides to audition for reality TV show American Pop Star in order to spread the Word. Pure inspirational joy right here while Pip converses with Skrein ("like wine" if you were pondering) and gets unfathomably deep about Ed's insane four year ascension into the world of acting, which threw him into such situations as, oh just a little series you might know as Game Of Thrones, and cinema sureshots such as Transporter Refueled, Kill Your Friends, the Distraction Pieces favourite (in line with most of the world) Deadpool, and his early introduction into the acting scene alongside rapper/singer/director Plan B in 'Ill Manors'. All peppered with his love of hip hop and grime, and wrapped up in a perfect mantra which you should and will take with you and involve in your own life. You'll know when you hear it... Brilliant. This time, it's about 10 Cloverfield Lane, the sequel to 2008's Cloverfield. Directed by Dan Tractenberg, the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr. Some points of discussion are: does this work as a sequel to Cloverfield? Can John Goodman ever not be great? Why does Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character remind them of You're Next? Chris also saw Kill Your Friends, from Owen Harris who previously directed the movie about Sam Houser of Grand Theft Auto fame -The Gamechangers. Dylan goes back into the vault and discusses why Erin Brockovich is still great and maintains that Julia Roberts is a great actress. There is also discussion of some news that has happened over the past week, including a new way to possibly watch films currently in theaters but at home. There are also a slew of Blu-ray releases that have been released, most notably Brooklyn, Carol, and The Big Short. Next week we will be reviewing The Little Prince and Man of Steel.
