Preschool - and early childhood learning - plays an essential role in the lives of many parents and children. Working parents rely on preschool, and research shows that a HIGH QUALITY preschool program can have a lasting positive impact on the life of a child. According to the NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, providing a high quality education for children before they turn 5 yields significant medium and long term benefits for children, including being:Less likely to repeat a gradeLess likely to be identified as having special needsMore prepared academically for later gradesMore likely to graduate from high schoolHigher earners in the workforceFurthermore, access to effective, diverse programs breaks down barriers that have prevented many children– particularly children of color and children from disadvantaged families– from achieving their full potential. But how do we ensure that - on a LARGE SCALE - our children are having experiences in early childhood programs that best support their short and long term development. Today, we'll learn from Dr. Kara Ahmed about how New York City, our country's largest school system, is supporting its youngest learners.   More on Kara:As Deputy Chancellor of Early Childhood Education, Dr. Kara Ahmed is responsible for ensuring the system is prepared to support all of New York City's young people from birth to five years of age. For the past 14 years, Kara was the Principal for the Department of Education's Living for the Young Family Through Education (LYFE) program, which she transformed into a nationally recognized, city-wide, early childhood education program.Kara began her career as an early childhood educator and then became the Early Childhood Supervisor for New Brunswick Public Schools. There she led all operational and programmatic aspects related to the public school and private provider preschool programs. Kara also led the implementation of preschool inclusion to guarantee children with identified disabilities were naturally integrated into general education preschool classrooms. Kara went on to work with William Patterson University to support the New Jersey DOE's implementation of preschool across the state, and she taught graduate courses at Teachers College, Columbia University. Kara has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University. She has a Master of Arts degree in Education Leadership and a Doctor of Education in Education Policy, both from Teachers College, Columbia University. Resources:nosillyquestionspodcast.comhttps://www.instagram.com/nosillyquestionspodcast/

Marx and Critical Social Ontology: Learning from the Later Lukács feat. Michael J. Thompson

The purpose of Marxist theory is not only to diagnose the negative forces and effects of capitalist society; emphasis must also be placed on the need for social transformation that would enhance human progress at the social and individual level. But the trends of current critical and Marxist theory have turned away from a more positive vision of critique. In his later work with the Budapest School, Lukács argued that Marxism must develop a comprehensive social ontology to understand how power relations within the society also shape and organize the social totality itself. A social ontology seeks to comprehend the ways that social relations, structures, processes and purposes are shaped or possibly contested. We welcome Marxist scholar, thinker and writer Michael J. Thompson. Thompson teaches at William Patterson University and is the author of The Domestication of Critical Theory, Twilight of the Self: The Decline of the Individual in Late Capitalism and several other important works. In this interview we discuss the legacy of western Marxism, the neo-idealist turn in the Frankfurt School, how to think the return of class in out time, and the work of the later Lukács and the project on critical social being. We're taking both a personal and clinical approach to mental health awareness month in this episode with special guest Erica LoPresti. Erica is a family nurse practitioner and founder of Shore Point Healing and Aesthetics in Rumson, New Jersey. Erica completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2002 from William Patterson University. She has since specialized in a number of medical disciplines including: cardiology, internal medicine and surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery--helping with some of the first successful nerve transplants in the country, functional medicine, and is certified in aesthetics through the American Board of Aesthetic Medicine. After years of seeing all the disease and devastation that illness causes in hospital settings, Erica sought a higher quality, more therapeutic approach to medicine. She began working for a functional medicine nutritionist where she learned how food and lifestyle function as truly preventative medicine. Erica continues to practice internal medicine and cardiology out of both Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas and Hackensack Meridian health systems at RWJ in New Brunswick, NJ, as well as JFK hospital in Edison, NJ. The years of clinical and professional experience came full circle in Erica's life when her longtime partner received a life-ending diagnosis of Stage 4 Cancer. Despite the gravity and progressiveness of his diagnosis, he lived for another 7 years under Erica's care, much of which she attributes to the alternative therapies they implemented, including IV drip therapies and mindfulness. The personal and professional experiences combined inspired Erica's practice: Shore Point Healing. In this episode, we discuss: - The power of the mind in keeping the body going - How our hustle and grind mentality is negatively impacting our physical and mental health - Alternative methods for treating mood disorders like depression and anxiety, outside of traditional medicine - NAD and NMN -- and IV cocktails including NAD, better known as 'The Happy Shot' - The efficacy of various forms of supplementation--specifically intravenous treatments vs. liposomals vs. capsules - Techniques for learning how to meditate - The importance of protein in the diet - Wellness brands Erica and Krysta both know and love, like Cymbiotika For all of our New Jersey-based FYX listeners, be sure to visit Shore Point Healing in-person for alternative medicine treatment options. Even when vision loss made it impossible to drive, Nancy often rode twelve public buses a day to show different properties. She would prepare for open houses by arriving three hours early to memorize the layout of the house, so she could effectively show it to prospective buyers. Derrek Phillips grew up in the bay area of San Francisco, CA, in a home filled with music of all genres. Some of his earliest memories are playing percussion on whatever pot or pan he found in the kitchen to the records of Sly and the Family Stone, Metallica, and Digital Underground.  Derrek met his wife at a local bay-area high school band competition while she was playing trombone. His interest in playing all types of percussion allowed him to play in community orchestras, drum and bugle corps, including studying with the late, great, jazz drummer, Tony Williams.  His love for music took him east, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from William Patterson University in New Jersey. After years of honing his skills in and around the New York jazz scene, Derrek's dreams of continuing his professional music career led him to Nashville. He has played and toured with such acts as Bonnie Tyler, Dr. John, Alison Kraus, James Otto, Delbert McClinton, Charlie Hunter, The McCrary Sisters, and many others.  A two-time Grammy winner, his percussion skills can be heard on the "Nashville" TV show, along with soundtracks by Vanessa Williams and Michael McDonald.  In 2014, Derrek joined Hank Williams Jr.'s band and he currently plays and tours with country music sensation Brett Eldredge. Derrek and I sat down one sunny summer day in 2020 on the porch of Moo Country in Leiper's Fork, TN. We discussed the influence his parents had on encouraging his musical ability and how the coronavirus pandemic is impacting professional tour musicians.  He's endorsed by Pearl Drums, Istanbul Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Alclair Audio ear monitors, Drum Dots, Stack Ring Percussion, and Vater Sticks. In this episode we had Jim Dickie, Partner at Sales Mastery discuss latest trends in B2B Sales and Marketing. About Jim: Jim Dickie is a Co-Founder of CSO Insights and Research Fellow for Sales Mastery; an independent research firm that focuses on profiling case study examples of how firms in the B2B marketplace are leveraging sales process, CRM, AI and knowledge to optimize revenue performance. Jim has over 30 years of sales and marketing management experience. Jim began his career with IBM and Sterling Software and then went on to launch two successful software companies. Jim then went on to co-found CSO Insights, which was acquired by Miller Heiman Group. Jim is also a contributing editor for CRM Magazine, CustomerThink, Top Sales World, and a contributing author for the Harvard Business Review. He has served as an advisor to Baylor Center for Professional Selling, William Patterson University’s Russ Berry Institute for Professional Selling, and is a lecturer at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business and the University of Colorado’s Leeds School of Business. Over the past twenty years, Jim’s teams have surveyed over a thousand sales transformation initiatives. Their research has become the benchmark for understanding how the role of sales is evolving, the challenges that are impacting sales performance, and most importantly what companies are doing to address those issues. Having worked with clients spanning multiple industries, including such firms as 3M, ADP, Cisco Systems, Corning, Direct Energy, Fairchild Semiconductor, Federal Express, IBM, Accenture, VISA, Xilinx, McKesson, Unocal, as well as many small to midsize enterprises, Jim has a broad perspective into sales transformation in the B2B world. Top ten takeaways from the episode: “A key question to ask in B2B Sales today is- What’s the next generation of solutions to optimize sales through better solutions.” “I spend part of my time looking for answer and the other part of my time sharing answers!” “One of the major trends we are seeing (because people have access to better data) is that marketing and sales is trying to be all things to all people.“ “We see people spend a lot of time identifying what their ideal prospect looks like.” “We have to start thinking about things from our prospect’s perspective. A personalized message should talk about how you can help someone do their job better. Everyone makes a decision based on personal payback.” “We spend a lot of time doing an analysis to understand who we want to engage with. But we forget to identify how we can help other people do something better.” “We have to earn the right to engage people as Sales and Marketing people today.” “A lot of companies do sales cycle reviews to understand why they lost a deal. But how often do they ask themselves, ‘what did you do to lose the deal’?” “If Customer Support people are not part of a prospecting campaign or part of the marketing campaign, there will always be a disconnect.” “When we did our study, the number one thing people were focused on is AI for lead generation.” About the podcast Sunny Side Up is a series of 15-minute podcasts. Leaders and innovators share what they’ve learned in the B2B tech sector on topics related to marketing, product management, sales, and leadership.
