Jimmy Bennett is a fitness coach, yoga instructor, glass blower and man of medicine. Jimmy and I first met at the Onnit Academy here in Austin, TX. Over the course of a year, we spent a lot of time training together and developing our connection as brothers. Jimmy has transformed from being an angry child with difficult and challenging experiences growing up to being a centered and empathetic warrior and leader. In this episode, we dive into the expansion of the psyche that yoga, the tools at Onnit, and psychedelic medicine has offered him. Jimmy also shares one of the craziest stories I have heard in this lifetime and the expansion that dark night of the soul offered him and the medicine he shares with the world. Jimmy has made a massive impact in my life and without a doubt if it wasn't for the love and compassion he has held for me here in Austin, I wouldn't be quite the elevated man I am today. Natalie also serves as a Health and Wellness Coach at the Onnit Academy, which is a gym in Austin, Texas where the goal is the optimize both the mind and body. I came across Natalie’s work while looking into the durability course that Onnit offers. Specifically, I came across an Instagram post (quotes below) of Natalie’s where she described overcoming arthritic knee pain through consistently doing the small things in the areas of Breath, Movement, Sleep and Nutrition that ultimately alleviated her pain. “ I WAS TOLD BY A DOCTOR THAT I HAVE ARTHRITIS IN MY KNEES, BUT RATHER THAN USING THAT AS AN EXCUSE TO STOP MOVING, I USED IT TO MOTIVATE ME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!…YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHOOSE YOUR DAILY ACTIONS AND HABITS THAT WILL IMPACT YOUR OVERALL HEALTH FOR YEARS TO COME. CHOOSE WISELY”! I believe I was always think of myself as an athlete. For those of you that have been longtime followers of the podcast, you know that I have struggled with a knee injury that always continues to linger. Natalie’s lines above really resonated with me, because when my daily habits include Breath, Movement, Sleep and Nutrition my knee almost always feels some much better and my performance improves dramatically. The moment I stray away from these habits, the pain quickly returns. I brought Natalie on the podcast to teach us about some of the daily habits she incorporates with her clients and into her own training regimen to remain pain free. In this interview Natalie and I dive into the topics listed below and more! Background on Natalie’s athletic career and injuries suffered. Natalie’s transformation to life after college basketball. Advice for athletes to help them transform in their lives after sports. What led to the creation of The Durable Athlete? What goes in to creating a durable athlete? Functional Medicine Field: What You Will Learn: The principles Funk uses to help his clients achieve their fitness goals How Funk's fitness regimen aligns with the functional medicine field Why Funk's communication style can help FM providers better connect with their patients What practitioners can do to help their patients understand the clinical side of their treatment strategy How to work with patients to undercover their driving ‘why' for treatment How to help men better fulfill their role as patriarchs by improving their health Nutritional products that Funk recommends to men over forty who want to boost testosterone Shredded Over-Forty Funk Roberts is the owner of Funk Roberts Fitness Inc., the Over 40 Alpha Brotherhood, and Funk Supplements Inc. On top of being a successful serial entrepreneur in the functional medicine field, Funk is also a certified metabolic trainer and former professional volleyball player. Funk is the author of Rapid Body Makeover, and also has a new book coming soon called “Over-40 Shred.” In this episode of The FM Shift, Funk joins us to share his journey and talk about what we can do to help our patients see the big picture when it comes to treatment. In Layman's Terms Funk may not be a practitioner, but he employs many of the values and principles that we live by in the functional medicine field. He understands the clinical nature of functional medicine, but his main goal is to help men over forty get shredded. He has been successful in doing so by communicating complex medical information to average people so they can understand it and use it to their advantage. Clinicians have a lot to learn from the way Funk communicates with the male patient population, and they can apply the same tactics in their own practices. Connecting the Dots Through Funk's journey, he made it abundantly clear that practitioners in the functional medicine field have to take a different approach to address the issues facing men over forty. There has to be a connection between the topic of testosterone and the issues the patients are coming in with. That way, the patients can understand the potential treatment options in a way that is more important to them. A lot of practitioners are big proponents of testing. But Funk offers an entirely new way to take that clinical data and make it meaningful to the patients. After a ton of research, trial and error, and putting it into action, Funk has developed a training and lifestyle system for men over the age of 40 who want to get into the best shape of their life. In 2010, Funk transformed his own body from a puffy 215lbs to 185 lbs lean, ripped, and over the past ten years has been able to maintain his body, health, and youthfulness naturally. Ultimate forgiveness is really knowing that I'm not going to hold this grudge in me anymore. That goes into letting go, surrendering, and all teachings from the plant medicine. If I can truly forgive, that's me taking this weight off of me because otherwise, I'm carrying that with me until I forgive. If I don't forgive you, I'm holding all of that inside of me. - Kyle Kingsbury Can breathwork, hedonic calendaring, and plant medicine teach you about your actual self, your fears, and your spirituality? Why he considered ending his life while in college and what saved him. How one of his biggest fears while in college thinking that he was going to end up in a 9-5 job. The fact that depression can happen to anybody and it doesn't always have a face you can see. What he thinks could have been a factor in his depression and suicide attempt as far as nutrition, lithium, and medication. How an elimination diet helped him realize he had a gluten intolerance and sparked him on a wellness journey. What he learned from being a professional UFC fighter and how he's applied that to life. His spirituality and how his relationship with God has changed since he began taking part in plant medicine ceremonies. Power Quotes From The Show "Our brains are receivers like a radio and we're tuned into Earth. When we use plant medicine, do holotropic breathing, or are in a float tank to alter our state of consciousness, we change the dial." - @Kingsbu on @wellnessforce Radio episode 219 http://bit.ly/wfpodcast "Ayahuasca taught me the hard lesson of understanding that I don't need to have an upcoming fight on my schedule to live properly and focus on my health. I realized that I can live this way all the time and it just takes discipline." - Kyle Kingsbury "Everyone is doing the best they can with what they have. Ultimately, that doesn't absolve people of their responsibility but there is forgiveness and compassion there. That's in every spiritual text - to live forgiveness and to truly embody that; to learn compassion and to feel what other people are going through and try to put yourself in their shoes. Try to see where others are coming from and not play the blame game." - Kyle Kingsbury "You don't always have to be right in an argument. If you no longer have to be right, the conversation changes and you can operate from a different place. You can really see eye to eye with the other person or at least attempt that. There's no attempting some level of understanding from the other person if you're dead-set on letting them know that you're right and then blame them. If you can at least operate from a place where you no longer have to be right, there's a whole different layer that you can obtain from that." - Kyle Kingsbury Links From Today's Show Kyle Kingsbury Facebook Twitter Instagram Onnit Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest Google+ Onnit Academy Twitter YouTube Instagram Total Human Optimization Podcast How Kyle Kingsbury used ayahuasca to become a happier person and a worse fighter The Bledsoe Show w/ Kyle Kingsbury: Finding Inner Peace #66 #9 The Legendary Paul Chek | Onnit Podcast #12 How To Get Back Up with Kyle Kingsbury | Onnit Podcast Joe Rogan Experience #756 - Kyle Kingsbury Episode 765: Kyle Kingsbury- Fasting for Muscle Gain, the Benefits of Going Barefoot & MORE Benefits of Berberine The Wim Hof Method Braving The Wilderness by Brené Brown Wild Wild Country Trailer The Death of the American Male - Mastermind Panel - Paleo f(x)™ WFR 209 Jamie Wheal WFR 196 Aubrey Marcus WFR 086 Mark Divine About Kyle Kingsbury Kyle Kingsbury is a former football player (Arizona State), a retired American professional mixed martial artist (UFC six years), and currently Director of Human Optimization at Onnit and host of The Onnit Podcast. “Spirituality untested and unchallenged is a sword made of tin foil. True steel is forged in the fire of resistance.”Aubrey MarcusExperimentalist. Unconventional fitness junkie. Entrepreneur. Human optimizer. Psychonaut. This week's guest defies any singular title. But the underlying ethos that defines Aubrey Marcus is best captured in one brief phrase:Warrior Poet.On the business front, Aubrey is the CEO of Onnit -- an optimal human performance company he founded just six years ago that has grown to one of the INC 500 top 500 fastest growing companies in America. Offering a wide array of products, Onnit produces supplements for cognition, mood, bone and joint function; fitness equipment such as kettle bells and jump ropes; personal care products; and foods that range from Himalayan salt to coffee. Online, the Onnit Academy boasts copious helpful information on all things human optimization. And if you visit Onnit HQ in Austin (where we recorded this conversation), you'll find a cutting edge training center & ju jitsu studio that many an elite athlete call home, including Super Bowl champion football players, Stanley Cup winning hockey players, Olympic gold medalists, and mixed martial arts champions. On top of being a very active CEO, Aubrey hosts both the Total Human Optimization Podcast as well as The Aubrey Marcus Podcast, both dedicated to exploring and expanding human happiness and consciousness. The accomplishments are impressive. But what truly interests me about Aubrey is his uniquely mystical path to success. His philosophical perspective on the human experiment. His uncommon devotion to continued expansion of consciousness. And his unusual blend of alpha male masculinity with esoteric spirituality. This is a conversation that examines the metaphysical intangibles that catalyzed Aubrey’s unusual path. It’s about self-worth, self-love and self-discovery — and why outward success is always an inside job.But mostly this is a conversation about what it means to be human. To live meaningfully. And with purpose.I think it's safe to say that Aubrey and I are very different people. With the volume of noise in our modern world that distracts and arouses the egoic mind, how do we awaken more consciousness so we can discover our deeper purpose? We often fall prey to short-term solutions like drugs, alcohol, or social media to cover up the real feelings and desires we hold in our heart. While these mental and emotional band-aids make us feel better in the moment, they don't actually get to root of the deeper issue. When was the last time you did a conditioning piece that you actually enjoyed? Chances are (unless you did track in high school) you don’t find long spouts on the air dyne or rower all too fun. Neither do we, so when we met Aaron Guyett and got to talking about battle ropes, and all the practical applications they have when it comes to conditioning, we decided he needed to be on the show. Aaron is the master instructor for Onnit Academy’s battle rope program, and runs a facility in CA called Innovative results. We met up with him at his facility to talk about how you can use battle ropes in your conditioning workouts. When it comes to using battle ropes, most of us just know one or two exercises that we saw on Instagram. In this episode, Aaron dives into all the different movement patterns and practical applications that battle ropes have including grip strength, power, and the ability to train all 3 metabolic pathways. Tune in for this one and make sure to catch the break where Aaron does a hands on demo with the battle ropes. Enjoy the show, Mike

Retired Staff Sergeant Bobby Dove, of Gloucester, VA, served as a Green Beret in the US Army Special Forces. On June 9, 2012, SSG(R) Dove was injured by an IED while driving a dirt bike on combat patrol in Afghanistan, resulting in amputations of his dominate hand and leg, as well as many other life threatening injuries. Dove’s immediate determination to overcome all obstacles was evident from day one of his recovery. He asked his father-in-law’s permission to marry his girlfriend the day he awoke in the ICU, and the two married in October 2013, and welcome their son, Wyatt Alexander, in October 2014. Through his dedication and hard work he returned to duty 7 months after his injury and deployed again on a non-combat deployment only 12 months post injury. Since medically retiring in 2014, Dove has been actively involved with nonprofit organizations that strive to help wounded service members return to the outdoors. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Special Operations Wounded Warriors, and is a Team 43 Sports Warrior.
