Just a little info on Roaccutane and what potential effects it can have on you. And why i think you should do you research, exhaust all avenues before taking it.
Today I sat with a client & good friend, Jess McGurk to chat about her experience with Roaccutane. We dive deep into our insecurities, how social media sets unrealistic goals and what ageing means to us. I share why I believe all women should freeze their eggs if they can afford to do us and the moment Botox gave me the ICK. I hope you enjoy this incredibly open and candid conversation.
"Severe acne affects your mental health far more than some medication ever will." Sarah Wood, mum of two young men and a teenage girl. Sarah Wood joins me on this episode to talk about her experience of teenage acne, how she coped, how she eventually treated it, and how she's supported all of her own teenagers through the same thing. Sarah first got acne when she was 12 and she still has it at 49. But nowadays she manages it with medication, and talks about how important it is to get the right treatment for acne if it's starting to affect your teenager's mental health. Sarah says that her own self-esteem took a double hit because she was already the 'clever' girl in school, with short hair - when the spots arrived, she gained the nickname "Zit-Slap". She talks about things getting better when other friends started to get spots, and she was streamed into top sets at school, so the 'clever' label didn't matter any more. However, when other kids' spots started to clear up and hers didn't, she knew she wanted to do something about it. Medication for teenage acne Sarah told me about oxytetracycline, a type of antibiotic that is usually the starting point for medication for teenage acne, once you've exhausted lotions and creams. Eventually, at the age of 40, she started taking Roaccutane, which all of her children have also taken at various times. Her son's acne developed from normal spots to huge lumps all over his face. Knowing how this could be dealt with, she took him straight to her dermatologist consultant and asked for Roaccutane. Sarah thinks there's too much scaremongering around the side-effects of Roaccutane. They range from birth defects if you take it during pregnancy (women and girls are advised to have a monthly pregnancy test whilst on the medication) to dry skin, dry eyes and muscular aches and pains. It can also (rarely) cause elevated cholesterol, so tests are done to monitor this. Sarah explains Roaccutane side-effects and how it works, and says that as parents the best thing we can do if our kids are struggling with self-esteem due to severe acne is push for a referral to a dermatologist, as this is the only way to have it prescribed, due to the monitoring required. Where to find Sarah Sarah is happy to talk about her experiences with severe acne. You can find her on: TwitterInstagramHer blog Mum of Three World Sarah has recently sent her middle child to university so we talk a little bit about the empty nest. You can get some hope on this stage from my episode on empty nesting. Lots of us have acne growing up, or even as adults. And for lots of us, the right anti-blemish products will clear it right up! But when that doesn't work... and changes to your diet don't work... and antibiotics from your doctor don't work.... that's when dermatologists can sometimes prescribe medication to treat your acne. Elyse Knowles has always struggled with her skin. She'd tried the pill, facials, Roaccutane...but it wasn't until 9 months ago that she started to see changes. Of course some of it is curtesy of the little one setting up shop in her tum, but she's also found a system that works for her (finally!). She sat down with Shazzy to talk about her love of natural products and how pregnancy has changed her beauty routine. If you want practical solutions to pimple problems, then stay tuned because today we’re covering how to get rid of pimples using K-Beauty products, tips and tricks. The first step is to identify the type of pimple or congestion you have before moving onto an appropriate treatment. Whiteheads: This is your classic pimple – a raised bump, with a white head. These are the kind of pimples you get when your pores are clogged with oil, dirt, dead skin cells etc. Pimple patches (especially the hydrocolloid ones) can be very effective against these, as they essentially suck the gunk out of them. Blackheads: These are much like whiteheads, except that the pores don’t close up. Instead, whatever’s clogging the pore oxidises on the surface of the skin, giving it a darker colour. Try skincare acids (eg. AHA, BHA) and clay masks to improve congestion. Pustules: These pimples contain – you guessed it, pus. Pustules often occur when you’re dealing with an infection and your body is producing more white blood cells. In laymen’s terms, pus is a combination of dead white blood cells and liquid related to the infection. Spot treatments and products that can dry out the pimple are the way to go here. Cysts: These are no fun. Cystic pimples lie beneath the surface of your skin and are often painful. It’s important to see a doctor or dermatologist for these, firstly to confirm that you have cystic acne, and secondly because cystic acne often requires medical assistance to fully heal. Tried and True Pimple Fixes Subi Perfect Pimple Patches are perfect for dealing with run-of-the-mill breakouts. Made from 100% hydrocolloid, they are drug-free, which makes them suitable for all skin types. While they’re most effective on whiteheads and blackheads, Perfect Pimple Patches can also work as a protective barrier on all pimple types to assist your skin’s natural healing process. As an added bonus – these patches are barely visible and ultra thin, making them perfect for pimples in hard-to-reach places like the side of your nose. Because they’re almost invisible, they can be worn both day and night. If you’re looking for a more traditional spot treatment, COSRX’s AC Collection Ultimate Spot Cream helps skin bounce back from acne. This blend of Zinc Oxide, Calamine, Aloe Vera and Centella Asiatica, which work to control excess sebum and remove dead skin cells with low irritation. For really stubborn blemishes and cysts, look no further than Mizon’s Acence Blemish Out Pink Spot. Designed by dermatologists, this double layer spot treatment works both as an exfoliator and reduces inflammation. After two consecutive nights of use, your problem pimples will be well on the way out. Another Word on Acne In some cases, there is a limit to the results that skincare products alone can achieve. Particularly with cystic acne, the issue will rarely clear up on its own. Don’t be afraid to seek medical treatment if your acne is not improving or if it appears to be getting worse. Unfortunately, the bigger and deeper the spots, the bigger the scars they will leave and those can be particularly tricky to get rid of. If they impact the deeper layers on the skin, scarring can be quite profound. In many cases, your GP will be able to prescribe antibiotics and topical products that can help. If that doesn’t clear it up you will be looking at something even stronger like Roaccutane, which can only be prescribed by a dermatologist in Australia. If your acne is accompanied by itchiness, then don’t rule out the possibility of fungal acne as well. Take a listen back at Episode 27 if you suspect that fungal acne might be at play. I’ve wanted to interview Afia Kuofor for a while now. She’s the face behind @dontpopthatspot, an Instagram account where she talks freely about her skin journey. As well as being a journalism student and presenter, Afia calls herself an acne activist. Over the past 10 years, since she was 12 years old, Afia's skin has had 'good' periods and what she refers to as ‘waves’ of acne. In this episode Afia shares why she's decided not to try Roaccutane (yet) and why she decided to set up @dontpopthatspot. As someone who has existed with hormonal acne for several years, I really wanted to get to the heart of how Afia approaches acne with such calm acceptance. One thing that came out of this conversation for me, is how we refer to 'dealing' with, or 'suffering' with acne, or calling acne an 'issue'. It's clear that it goes way beyond what we see in the mirror. Thanks so much for listening. You can find me on Twitter and Instagram @beautymepodcast, and if you have time I would love if you could provide a review - it really helps the podcast be seen out there. See you next week! In today's episode, this is Jackson who is going to share his journey with acne. His skin story leads to in-depth topics and reflections about the Roaccutane treatment, about dealing with acne being a man, how to face other people during acne crisis, and to step back from the endless battle acne can create and the solutions and support which can be found on social networks. Thank you Jackson for being transparent, and sharing the good and bad moments you've have through. Nothing is easy indeed, we often feel alone and are afraid of what others might think of us. Hopefully, this is a matter of finding support, being brave and becoming stronger. Enjoy listening ! As we learned in part 1 of Rachel’s interview, she comes from a family of physicians, and when she was seriously injured by Accutane, a medication many teens and young adults take for acne, Rachel found herself at odds with her family’s complete buy-in to the corporate pharmaceutical narrative and their wholesale acceptance of Big Pharma’s so-called research. All the doctors denied Accutane injured Rachel and diagnosed her as psychosomatic. Rachel’s family also didn’t believe her, calling into question her mental stability. Not surprisingly Rachel felt doubly deceived by medicine and her family, and as pretty much any one who’s experienced a medical error can attest, when doctors and hospitals deny the error or the harm it caused, that invalidated trauma gets deepened. In part 2, Rachel tells about the pressure from her family to abandon natural approaches to health and embrace ‘better living through chemistry’, including taking Accutane for moderate acne. We then hear the hellish side effects Rachel has and continues to endure, what she learned when she took a deep dive into Accutane side effects and the pharmaceutical industry, and how she’s coping with through advocacy and education. Growing up in an affluent community, but as the only non-white kid in her school, Rachel Winters learned early how our social narratives, be they ethnic or medical, can have profound impacts on our life trajectory. Coming from a family of physicians with a ‘better living through chemistry’ approach to medicine and pharmaceuticals, Rachel’s trust in the medical system was deeply ingrained from an early age. Her father assured her that medications were safe, and encouraged Rachel to not feel ashamed about taking pharmaceuticals. When Rachel had trouble sleeping, her mother shared her own sleeping medications. When Rachel had a foot issue and wanted a simple out patient treatment, her father insisted on ‘proven’ invasive and disabling surgery. So when Rachel’s body became dependent on medication given for an erroneous diagnosis, and her foot surgery induced blood curdling screaming pain, Rachel began to see the cavernous cracks in the health care system. She realized she had been repeatedly betrayed by so-called evidence based medicine. In fact, health care is often decision based evidence making. When Rache’s family dismissed the medication side effects and her physical symptoms as psychological, the sense of medical and familial betrayal deepened. In part 1 of this interview Rachel shares how her family of physicians shaped her trust in the scientific process and medical establishment, but it was her real world experience of multiple medical errors that opened her eyes to the reality of health care, big pharma, and the role of physicians in perpetuating profits over people. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Karin: Hello Dr Cabral, I listen to your podcasts every day and never stop learning something new. I was diagnosed with candida overgrowth and I really want to know, is there any truth behind the dietary recommendation to avoid the consumption of yeasts and mushrooms (not medicinal)? And if so, why? As a biologist I'm really interested in the mechanism behind it.Thank you so much!Karin. Carolyn: How can I lower my LDL to below 50. Would my liver be producing too much LDL for some reason other than from my diet?? I am 64 year old female diagnosed with coronary heart disease which runs in my family. Father died at age 66 and one brother has had heart bypass surgery. My total cholesterol is 176, HDL 72, Triglycerides 69 and LDL 88. I am on statin 40 mg. for 1.5 years. I have always exercised and still do, 4 days a week. 3 cardio and one strength class per week for 60 minutes each. I eat fresh fruit and vegetables and lowfat yogurt, egg beaters, oats and grains, some dark chocolate and salmon or cod. Occasionally eat shrimp. I take vitamin supplements and also was diagnosed with osteopenia 10 yrs ago and took extra calcium as recommended by doctors for past 10 year which I am afraid contributed to my heart disease. Now I get my calcium from food sources and small amount in multi vitamin. Heart disease was diagnosed with chemical stress test which I requested because of family history as I have no symptoms of heart disease. My calcium score test 10 years ago was zero and now it is 56 - my diet and exercise has been the same other than I am older and started taking calcium supplements. Also have had a stressful life during that time frame but now I have gotten my stress under control. Never had high blood pressure ever. Jada: Hi Dr.Cabral, Thanks for all of the wonderful information you make available for people! I’m a 37 year old woman who isn’t overweight, pre-diabetic, smoker or drinker who has been experiencing heart disease symptoms. I get extremely short of breath by doing nothing to the point of feeling as if I’m suffocating and will prevent me from sleeping, chest pressure that can cause me to dry heave and will last for days/weeks at a time, heavy arms, weakness, being woken from sleep not breathing, sometimes SVT episodes, hair loss, tachycardia, fatigue, brain fog, inability to retain info and recall words, hormonal issues with possible endometriosis now, Hashimotos but thyroid is stable. These symptoms mildly started in 2012 after a stressful event but cardiac symptoms worsened in 2017 out of nowhere. My EKGs are now borderline and I’ve had one abnormal EKG after I was given Albuterol which showed Ischemia and mild T-wave depression. I’ve been to 9+ cardiologists, NDs and a couple functional medicine doctors that don’t know what is wrong and they all tell me my heart is fine. I’ve had stress test, Stress MRI, echos, holter monitors(showed PACs,PVC and occasional SVT) but everything looks “fine.” I’ve really lost my quality of life and while some days my symptoms calm down, I have many days where I can barely move because I’m so shortness of breath with such a tight chest! This is terrifying! I’ve had one doctor tell me this could be related to stealth infections or mycotoxins. Your expertise is much appreciated! Lauren: Dear Doctor Cabral, I’ve been listening to your podcasts for about 4 months, I love everything you do, its amazing how one person can be such a wealth of knowledge in so many different areas of expertise. I’m female, 31, 68kg, no children, BMI fine. I’ve been working with a local practitioner to help heal from a variety of dis-eases and more in discovered alone the way. I use to suffer with seasonal allergies (hay fever, pollen (Adelaide high pollen rate), animals, grass etc ever since I can remember). I now suffer constantly all year around from chronic itchy eyes (TRIED EVERYTHING), it’s very debilitating as I wake myself up from itchy my eyes in my sleep therefore I never feel well rested. I use to live in Dubai, where my allergies didn’t flare up but suffered regular ear infections as I was a flight attendant. My IGE is through the roof; 780 H and my eosinophils has been really high for a while now too. I have had asthma, eczema since I was a baby and suffered on and off with anxiety/depression since I was 16 (on/off meds). About 23, I was diagnosed with PCOS/celiac dis-ease and discovered had I H-pylori, which I took a millions AB’s for. I recently got tested for MTHFR, which I tested positive for homozygous C677T and tested positive parasites Blasto (AB’s didn’t kill). I discovered some mould (killed with vinegar) in my home and also have a hypoallergenic dog. My symptoms and trying to treat are: chronic itchy eyes (TRIED EVERYTHING), acne (since I can remember), headaches, emotional, eczema/dry skin, high eosinophils, candida, parasites, brain fog, parasites. Past conventional treatment for acne: 2 courses of Roaccutane, Doxycycline, steroid injections, hormone blockers, even got a job a skin clinic, hoping I would heal. Working with my local practitioner and bicom therapy; we are addressing the parasites, possible candida and healing of the gut, with hope all of the other symptom will decrease. I eat relatively healthy, gluten free, dairy free, exercise/sweat 4-5 times per week, drink plenty of water, fast minimum 12 hours per day. Have a good sleep hygiene however never get a good night sleep. I would say I’m pitta/vata dosha type. Due to supplements, I’ve got my homo from 10.1 down to 4.4, b12 has increased, folate has increased, vit d has increased. I have really dry flaky skin on scalp/face and dry eyes but acne! I have tried low histamine diet (all vary depending where you source it) however it conflicts with the MTHFR diet and Ayurveda diet. I use your daily nutritional shake, do I require the additional supplements on top? I have read your amazing book RBE, use your daily nutritional shake, currently doing your allergy protocol and about to start your 21 day detox and parasite protocol. I would love to do the big five, especially the OAT test but as you know all these supplements and labs are very expensive. I know you have done podcasts before on a variety of the above topics however as you know not one size fits all and I don’t think anyone out there has the exact health history as myself. I am doing everything I can within my financial means to help my recovery back to equilibrium. I’m really hoping you can help me, thanks for your time. Karyn: Hello, whenever I walk for exercise I find that my hands start to swell and feel uncomfortable and dry. I also get a little itchy on the inner parts of my thighs. I've read this could be a result of low sodium? I am otherwise fit (more so a lean vata bodytype), I eat whole foods and exercise often. I've noticed this happens mainly when I walk very faced paced and isn't affected by what I wear. Any suggestions on how I can stop this from happening as its quite uncomfortable. Thank you so much in advance! Reka: Hello Stephen, Can you please shed some light. Everyone is raving on about celery juice curing digestive disorders and disease because the of the medical medium. He also claims that eggs and butter (organic grass feed doesn’t matter)cause disease over time is there truth to this, if so can you please explain? Thank you for everything you do! Cameron: Hi Dr Cabral, I'm a huge fan of all that you do, and listen to your podcast religiously. I especially love your training Thursday episodes, as I also enjoy weight training. I'm a 5' 9", 71kg predominantly Vata body type, and I'd like to gain a little size, without harming my health otherwise. In recent years I have suffered the symptoms of Menieres disease, however between your fantastic podcast and my local naturopath's help, I feel like I can say I've finally got on top of it, touch wood. The only problem is, I sometimes feel increased symptoms, mainly ear fullness and slight hearing loss in my right ear, within a day or so after workouts with heavy compound lifts, especially squats and deadlifts. I'm concerned the heavy lifts may be too taxing on my CNS and that may be the cause. What do you think? I'd love to know your thoughts on the connection between the CNS and weightlifting. I know my diet and sleep have room for improvement if I'm honest. Obviously my health is more important than growing "beach muscles", but just when I feel progress, my body often seems to flare up.Thanks so much for all you do. If you were in Australia I'd shout you a beer (or mineral water!) to say thanks. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Anonymous: I am curious about your thoughts on iron levels. I don’t recall hearing you ever talk about it on the podcast. A few months ago I thought I had mono - I had all the classic symptoms. Though I didn’t check my blood work I started taking iron and felt much better. My doctor said I was most likely anemic as I was a vegetarian at the time. What are your thoughts on iron levels as it relates to mood, energy etc? Vivian; After listening to your podcast on signs that a disease is coming , i got really concerned cause my husband showed one , very clearly - the diagonal crease on ear lob - His mom passed in 2010 at age of 60 , suddenly from heart disease they never knew she had. After that , in 2011 , he did a full scan and all showed fine. I told him about the podcast and forced him to do it over....we just got a call from the doctor , saying that he has the early stage of a heart disease...that one one of the markers that in 2011 came as zero, came as a 4 now and his red blood cells are kind of "sticky" and can result in heart problems if he doesn't eat right and follow the recommendations. Since i met him , over 2 years ago, his diet has changed completely, i thought him how to eat and all i have learned about nutrition. He finished a doctor Cabral 7 days detox couple weeks ago. Please , what are your recommendations ( what to avoid and what to supplement with) so we can do our best to have him with us for many ,many, years?? I appreciate your help and all you do. Suzanne: Hello Stephen! Thank you for all the wonderful work you do in the healing world! My question involves a few different sicknesses I’ve accumulated over the last year. Last year during a stressful teaching stint I was diagnosed with an Epstein Bar (Glandular Fever) relapse, despite having the condition in my late teenage years. (I am now 25 years old.I suffered with a chronic sore throat initially which turned into fatigue, muscle aches and peeling fingers and toes. After changing a huge amount of my lifestyle and stress I have helped things but still suffer from the sore throat every few days, fatigue and constant peeling of my fingers and toes. (Despite many coconut oil applications I can’t seem to stop the peeling) On a side note: I have travelled a lot (and did get bitten by a tick in Nepal.) I have been on far too many antibiotics (If only I knew) and did go on a course of Roaccutane for three months. I was also vegan for almost four years in an attempt for perfect health which has since changed since the long absence of my period. My sickness also began when I was vegan. I now eat a small amount of meat including salmon, organic chicken and kangaroo which has fixed my hormones. (Still no dairy, eggs and limited gluten.) BUT Despite my best efforts I’m still fatigued and working part time as a result with peeling fingers and a sore throat most of the time) I believe I will get there I just need a little help and advice. Thank you for all the work you do in this field. The path to wellness in the best gift you could give. Elizabeth: Hi Dr Cabral, I don't think you have done a podcast on this but I was wondering if there is anything you would specifically recommend for PMLE? I have read online that Shirudo AGR+E lotion is good but I wondered if there is also anything else or any supplements that would help (and/or potentially reverse) this? It may help to mention, I believe I have hypothyroidism (which I am naturally treating the past year or so) and that I have changed my sunscreen various times (minor PMLE occurs with each different sunscreen brand; I am also trying to find a natural sunscreen). The PMLE type reaction is relatively minor and has only started to happen the last couple of years. Last summer vacation I had a minor reaction on my arms, legs/ankles and chest and this vacation this past week (mid-June) I had it only on my hands, knees, feet and partly on my collarbone/upper chest. It's not immediate, it seems to take a few days to occur. I remain out of the sun when it does, although using more sunscreen does not help. Not sure if reaction on different areas of the body signifies anything? I am from London, where we don't get much sun. Perhaps there is a relation with thyroid but it would be useful to know what may help it going forward and what may have caused it. I am going away again soon so I did contact your support email in hope for a earlier response but they directed me to ask cabral, however hopefully this may help some others... Thank you so much for you and your podcasts! Andrea: My 25 yr old daughter has had gut issues for years and has been to many dr,’s but still no relief. She was then diagnosed with Hashimotos and thyroid cancer and had her thyroid removed 12/2016. She now also has psoriasis. She now see’s a local Functional medicine dr here in STL who has been trying to help her. She tried a candida cleanse late last year but still has gut pain. She is gluten free and has done food allergy tests that show mild allergy to yogurt but that’s it. She decided to do a GI Map and here are the things that seem off:Enterotoxigenic E. coli LT/ST 1.19e6 High; Normal Bacterial Flora; Bacteroides fragilis 8.8e8 Low; Bifidobacterium spp. 1.6e10; Enterococcus spp. 5.7e6; Escherichia spp. 7.9e5 Low; Lactobacillus spp. 2.6e6; Clostridium spp. 9.66e4; Enterobacter spp. 1.69e5 Low; Phyla Microbiota Result; Bacteroidetes 1.94e10 Low; Firmicutes 7.87e9 Low; Firmicutes:Bacteroidetes Ratio 0.40; Additional Dysbiotic/Overgrowth Bacteria Result Normal; Bacillus spp. 2.71e4; Enterococcus faecalis

This week we interview Dr David Healy. Dr Healy is an internationally respected psychiatrist, psychopharmacologist, scientist, and author. A professor of Psychiatry in Wales, David studied medicine in Dublin, and at Cambridge University. He is a former Secretary of the British Association for Psychopharmacology and has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and 20 books, including The Antidepressant Era and The Creation of Psychopharmacology and his latest book, Pharmageddon, published in 2012. David is a founder and CEO of Data Based Medicine Limited, which operates through its website RxISK.org, and is dedicated to making medicines safer through online direct patient reporting of drug side effects. In this interview, we discuss Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) and Dr Healy’s novel and innovative approach to finding a cure. A recent email to Dr Healy starkly highlights the problem: I took X for 16 years without any side effects. Stopped 7 months ago and all hell broke loose. Some of the side effects I got in the first week after quitting are: no libido, cold testicles/penis, pain around penis and anus, tinnitus, erectile dysfunction, tingling, numbness... Life is not very good these days. I am married with beautiful children. They have lost their father. If I can do anything to help, don't hesitate to get in touch. I would like to give you my biggest thanks for what you are doing and wish you all the best with the fundraising. In the episode we discuss: How Dr Healy came to set up Data Based medicine and RxISK.org. Why RxISK are focussing on Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD). That genital numbness can occur very quickly upon taking an ssri antidepressant and can also be triggered by drugs such as Roaccutane (isotretinoin) and Propecia (finasteride). What led to setting up the RxISK Prize. How people can get involved with the campaign. That it’s often people not involved with healthcare who get motivated to take action. How empowering it is to enable people harmed by pills to be part of the solution. To get in touch with us email: podcasts@madinamerica.com © Mad in America 2017
Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Lisa: Hi Dr. Cabral, I’m asking this question for a friend and I will list the problems so its easier. 5yr old boy with Autism Have done many tests: Stool, OATS, Heavy Metals and vitamins Results: yeast overgrowth, high lead, arsenic, aluminum, Clostridium Difficele and E. Coli Child does not have overgrowth bacteria or parasites. He does have MTHFR and CBS gene mutations What would be the order to address his problems so I can help his mom? Thank you so much and I hope one day you can do a podcast on Autism Julie L.: Hi Dr. Cabral, I recently found your podcasts and have enjoyed the various topics you cover. I searched on your website for information about Cyclic Vomiting and could not find anything. Here is the story . . . My 17 year old daughter has experienced an unexplained, alternating pattern of vomiting for the past 4 years or so. I often thought it was tied to the flu, food poisoning or other. Her symptoms include nausea, intense stomach pain, and episodes of constant vomiting (this can last up to 3 days). In the last year migraine headaches were added to this list of symptoms and the vomiting episodes became more frequent. Her MD ran a series of blood and stool tests, but did not find anything out of normal limits, including h. pylori. The doctor diagnosed her with "cyclic vomiting syndrome" and high cortisol levels, which is why she felt nausea every morning and had alternating vomiting episodes. She has since been prescribed Zofran Odt to use at the earliest onset of nausea and Rizatriptan 10 MG (SSRI) for the vomiting once it has started. The pills have helped reduce episodes but the morning nausea persists. We were told she would grow out of this. Are you familiar with this diagnosis and do you have any thoughts about this disease? (From a mom's perspective I would add that she is a high comp soccer player and sleeps about 5-7 hours on a good night, comes home after school and has to take a 2 hour nap after school each day. Her diet is ok but she does eat a lot of gold fish and popcorn for snacks). Thank you, Julie L. Nikki: Hi again! A couple months ago I had a lump in my underarm. It dissipated in a couple weeks and I assumed my body was just fighting off an illness. I've recently gotten 2 more. A larger lump in one (bean size) and smaller in the other (pea size). They are painful to the touch. I'm hoping it's an abscess but have an appointment with my doc soon to check it out. If an abscess, I want to figure out what is triggering the inflammation so I can correct it. Any light you can shed would be great. As always, a huge THANK YOU to you and your team. Your knowledge, time and efforts in providing us this information is so much appreciated. Cheers to our health! Best, Nikki. Jessica: Hi Dr. Cabral! Ive been listening to your podcast religiously for about 6 months and i just want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm positive with your help I can heal my body. I seem to have issues with staying hydrated especially when I exercise. I've been starting my day off with warm water, Himalayan salt, and lime and that seems to help on a daily basis. However, when I go moutain biking in perticular I usually get a massive headache and it takes me about 6-8 hours to rehydrate. I put a good amount of pink salt in my camelback when I ride and it helps but I still usually start to feel terrible about 2 hours after I ride. I suspect this is some sort of auto immune response as I also suffer from Alopecia Areata. That started about ten years ago due to stress and I gave up gluten 8 years ago which helped tremendously. I get like one random bald spot now and then which tells me my body is not in optimal condition. I've been eating pretty clean for about six months, no gluten, hardly any dairy and very little processed foods and sugar. I'd like to know your recommendation on how to treat the hydration situation for the long term as well as your recommendation on what to do in the short term while my body is healing. Thanks again! Jess Anonymous: Hi Dr Cabral, I sent an AskCabral question the other week in relation to slow skin healing and wanted to provide a bit more info as realize I probably didn't give any; - late 20s, juice daily, drink a lot of water, take supplements, generally live healthily - A mark from a spot just above my upper lip from over a month ago still very red and has not healed; I typically use mild acids and "Egyptian Magic cream" amongst other things for marks but no matter what I do spots take weeks to fade (I am pale and scar easily) - Late August at the dentist for a professional hygiene clean left me with a mark on my face; the dentist accidentally sprayed up close the side of my cheek with the power jet spray!! Thankfully the mark has faded with use of La Roche Posay Cicaplast but over a month on there is still a red patch... - Mosquito bites on legs from July / August although healed still leave behind red marks - I am convinced I have hormonal imbalance/candida and hypothyroid which I am trying to correct and this all may be down to a weak immune system. I have started taking a vitamin B complex, primrose oil and a higher dose of Vit C along with all other supplements... but my skin has been very slow to heal since I can remember - I used to take a Roaccutane (6+ years ago, total six months) because scars from getting spots bothered me more than the actual spots themselves!! I am trying hard to strengthen my immune system (will check if you've done an episode on that) but nearly 30 I am a little fed up! Thank you... enjoy all you do :) Angela: Hi Dr. Cabral, Your expertise and generosity with your podcasts is not only a gift to us all but a true inspiration. My question is regarding my Sister in law. She suffers from Fibromyalgia and is soon to be tested for Lupus as well. She is a mother of three, two of them being twin toddlers. She suffers from intense pain throughout her entire body, short term memory loss and depends on a cane. It started with a back injury where she damaged the lower discs in her back. Then with the traumatic occurrence of her losing her mom, it sprung on the disease. Her MD prescribes her Morphine and Opiates, that she takes daily. They have also suggested starting a new plan consisting of horse tranquilizer drugs... She is just about to start a healthy option first called, Plexus. What are your suggestions for her to follow to find a natural solution to her pain or to minimize the impact this horrible disease has on her life? I would love to see her happy and healthy, and the relief of all the stress this illness has caused on her family. Thank you, and all the best. Angela Nicole: Hi Dr. Cabral, Firstly, I would like to thank you for your podcasts and all of the work you do to help people in reaching their health goals. I listen to your podcasts everyday and I so appreciate your dedication and passion to your work! I have a question regarding stress support, specifically relating to ashwagandha and CBD oil. I have heard you speak often of these two supplements and how well they work. I use ashwaganda every morning and feel as though it seems to be working quite well throughout most of the day. However, I notice that I am often most anxious and stressed in the mid-late afternoons. I was thinking of adding a second dose of ashwagandha at this time of day, but thought of perhaps trying CBD oil instead. What are the main differences between CBD oil and ashwaghnda specifically? Is one more potent than another? Thank you again for all you do! Kind Regards, Nicole - - - Show Note & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/631 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
Izziness, We're back with our 2nd day of the Cabral HouseCalls and I'm looking forward to sharing with you more of our community's questions... Let's get started! Leilani: Dear Dr Cabral, I have tried dry brushing twice and each time I start off, I'm fine for around 2 to 3 weeks after which my legs start to itch! I brush for a few minutes before showering and then when I dry my legs after coming out of the shower, they will not stop itching for quite a while. Rubbing with a towel or just my hands make it feel better for a little bit, but then it just starts off again. At first I didn't see anything strange (like a rash) but when I looked closer I could just slightly make out some small white spots...? Eventually the itching will go away (10 - 30 minutes later) but sometimes when I sit on the train (when my legs make contact with something, usuly wearing trousers) it can kick off again. After I stop with the brushing, my legs will continue to itch after showering for up to a month. I only moisturise my body with coconut oil, I have for years now, so I know it's not that. I only use natural soaps from the health food store, also have done so for years, so I don't think it's that. Our towels are cotton, always have been. This occurs whether my legs have been shaved ot not. We don't have a water filter in our shower and the water is quite hard - we've lived in hard water areas for many years and it didn't do anything to my skin, it's just when I start dry brushing. The brush I have came in a gift pack with some natural skin care profucts, so I assume the bristles are natural, but it did 't say. The last time I tried I made a point of not rubbing too hard, just making very gentle strokes. But just before I stopped again the second time, my arms also started feeling itchy although nowhere near as bad as my legs. I did take Roaccutane when I was a teenager, which dried out my lips to this day. Could it have had an effect on all of my skin? I do get stretch marks very easily and whenever I go for a facial I'm told my skin is quite dry. I drink a lot of water and herbal tea during the day, is there something else I can try? Dry brushing seems like such an easy thing to do to benefit your health, it's just so annoying this happens when I try. Thanks again for your amazing podcast and especially all the time you spend educating all of us on a healthier way of living. It is so very much appreciated. Marie: Hi Stephen, I have an itchy patch on my gluteal cleft and sometimes also around the anus. It gets worse around menstruation. I did have candida overgrowth a couple of years ago and did a cleanse to balance things out. I'm wondering if this could be a yeast issue or something else. I'm in my 30's and have an active lifestyle. I occasionally drink matcha and have chocolate (Hu Kitchen/Eating Evolved) sweetened with coconut sugar. I don't eat dairy & occasionally eat gluten. I mostly shop at the farmers market & whole foods eating little to no processed foods regularly. Thank you in advance for your time and thoughts. I really appreciate listening to your podcast because you give so much information & you've taken the time to study both eastern & western medicine. Tara: What can you tell me about seborrheic dermatitis? What are the causes and what are the treatments? And will lab tests help determine root causes? Thanks! Stephanie: Hi Dr Cabral, first off love the podcasts, they are a daily ritual for me. I am writing because I just finished the 21 day detox with sole purpose of trying to get rid of lifelong acne. I took prescriptions growing and 15 years ago before I was aware of how bad it was, I took Accutane which got rid of it temporarily but it now seems to be getting more aggressive as I get older. Unfortunately the detox didn't help. I have been eating a plant based diet for about 6 months now and am thinking this isn't diet related at all. I feel great, have lots of energy, sleep well, no stomach pains or bloating or weird cravings. I do have really heavy and long periods and surprisingly have no acne when I am pregnant or breast feeding. I have seen a natural Dr who ran a ton of blood work and said everything looks pretty good but noted my Estradoil and Estrone were a bit high and put me on some progesterone because she said it's a tad low, but i took myself off because I felt horrible on it. She also gave me several supplements but here I am 4 months later with acne. I'm not ready to give up yet, but don't know where to go next. I am not able to purchase every test so would love to know what you would suggest as my next step. Thanks so much for your time! Amanda: Hello Dr Cabral, I look forward to the weekend house calls each and every week. The amount of information that I gain from these calls have helped me immensely in my private practice. I have a client who has come to me with ME/CFS. She has had a myriad of health issues since she was a child and has finally been "diagnosed" with ME/CFS. She is very aware of diet and nutrition (bachelors in nutrition), has tried many different alternative methods of healing and still can't seem to find answers. She has had copious amounts of antibiotics around 2014-2015 and right now we are working on rebuilding her gut flora, but her stomach is very sensitive so many things she struggles with including sauerkraut. Do you have any advice on this condition or ways you would advise me to help her progress back to health and vitality? Thank you so much for all the knowledge and healing wisdom you share. Tony: Dr. Cabral, I've listened to a couple of your podcasts regarding Menieres "disease". I was diagnosed with this about 18 months ago which was about 6 months after my initial onset of tinnitus. The ringing and pressurized feeling started in my right ear in August of 2015. At the time I believed it was directly related to stress. I had just moved my family across 3 states, my wife was pregnant with very severe kidney complications, and I had left my old career behind to become a Police Officer. In February of 2016 I had my first experience with brain fog and severe dizziness. Since then I have had seasons where it increases and decreases in intensity. I was also diagnosed with a shift work sleep disorder. Long story short the dizziness and nausea became too intense to continue in my new career as a Police Officer. Menieres has drastically impacted my life and I'm hoping to find out what I can do differently to get my life and health back. A little more info about me that may be helpful...I lift weights about 5 days a week and have always taken care of my body. I generally eat a protein rich diet and especially have been consuming lots of cruciferous vegetables lately. I typically start my days with anti oxidant berry blend smoothies with a handful of spinach and a scoop of Muscle Farm's Combat Powder(tri-blend protein). I've started to limit processed foods but I still eat a lot of bread. I have noticed that my worst days often fall a day or two after a "cheat day" where I probably binged on chips or other similar processed foods. I've become very conscientious of sodium intake but I still experience random bouts of brain fog and dizziness. For a short while I was receiving vestibular therapy and dry needling around my right trapezius/upper back and shoulder area. I found that very relaxing and that it did suppress some symptoms. However, like I said, since then I have had to walk away from my job as a Police officer and no longer have he insurance coverage for V therapy or dry needling. I'm curious to know... I've had a very high protein diet for about 11 years, since I really got into weightlifting. Is there a possibility that I've just trashed my gut and it may be manifesting itself through the ringing and dizziness in my ear? What would be the test you recommend to look into this? Also, for years I have taken Benadryl (1 tablet) at night to help me fall asleep. Is there any way that this could also be causing an adverse reaction affecting my Menieres diagnosis? Thank you so much for what you do, your a blessing to many, and I'm looking forward to hearing back from you soon. -Tony Alexandra: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions! I was just wondering if you'd have any idea why I'm overall a lean female but frequently feel as if my face is bloated. Others tell me they don't notice it but I know I have fluid retention there and it can be discouraging. Any tips? Thanks! Thank you for tuning into today's Q&A and hopefully you picked up a lot of tips along the way! - - - Show Notes & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/604 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
