•  AI might help – up to a point •  “There will not be a replacement for a human being”   (Total Recorded Time is 20:12)    ENGLEWOOD, N.J. – The foundation of any business is the customer. But customer relations – that interaction between a business and those who give it money – can be challenging.  So can artificial intelligence help?  One of the world's authorities on customer experience and strategy execution says perhaps.  “I think that AI will do some mundane work that we probably don't care to do anyway,” says Lior Arussy, author, consultant and creative change agent.   “but I am a firm believer that when it comes to authenticity and human touch, there will not be a replacement for a human being.” Mr. Arussy's insights and methods have been put into practice in more than 200 corporate transformations worldwide.  He is also the author of seven books, including “Dare to Author!” (Greenleaf Book Group, October 2024) and “Next Is Now,” (Simon & Schuster; May 2018).   For more information:  https://www.liorarussy.com/

In today's episode of Leveraging Thought Leadership, our host Peter Winick is joined by Bill Sherman, co-host and COO of Leveraging Thought Leadership, Dr. AJ Marsden, an organizational psychologist and statistician, Josh Bernoff, author of Build a Better Business Book, Marissa Eigenbrood, President of Smith Publicity, Inc., Alison Schwartz, COO of Gotham Ghostwriters, and Naren Aryal of Amplify Publishing Group. They discuss the findings of their recent research into the Return on Investment of publishing a business book. In today's presentation we will have a first look at the data that was gathered from hundreds of authors about their experiences getting published, the expenses incurred, and the results the book had on their business. These authors were reached through not only the friends and colleagues at Thought Leadership Leverage but those from many supporting sponsors such as Greenleaf Book Group, Marshall Goldsmith 100 Coaches, Page Two Books, and Zilker Media to name a few. Before the research could even begin we had to ask the questions "What is ROI?  How can you measure it?  How much does an author spend? What is the effect of different publishing models?  And what type of returns do authors see? In answering these questions we explore what the data tells us about the three different publishing models (Traditional, Hybrid, and Self Publishing), the role RP and Ghostwriters can play in the success of each. We also investigate the hard and soft costs involved in writing a book and what the returns could look like.  While many expect the sales of the book to account for much of their profit, we learn how using the book as a key part of a platform and gateway to other parts of the business is where real impact can be found. More questions will be asked and answered in the white paper that will be released in September as we continue to pour over the data. Look around you. The events of your mind are being mirrored in the multiple sensations coming into your brain. Synchronicity shows us that our minds are embedded in our environments. It's perhaps one of history's funny accidents that relations between the U.S. and Russia were changed not by one, but two, George Kennans. Decades before George F. Kennan wrote his famous Long Telegram that set the tone for the Cold War, his predecessor was exploring Russia's Far East on a quest to investigate the then-Russian Empire's practice of exiling political prisoners to Siberia. What Kennan saw on his journey shook him to his very core, forcing him to question his respect for the Russian Empire. And as writer Gregory Wallance explains in his book Into Siberia: George Kennan's Epic Journey Through the Brutal, Frozen Heart of Russia (St. Martin's Press, 2023), Kennan's advocacy upon his return turned U.S. views from Russia away from being a faraway friend to something far more skeptical. Gregory Wallance is a lawyer and writer in New York City. He is the author of Papa's Game (Ballantine Books: 1982) which received a nonfiction nomination for an Edgar Allan Poe Award; America's Soul In the Balance: The Holocaust, FDR's State Department, And The Moral Disgrace Of An American Aristocracy (Greenleaf Book Group: 2012), The Woman Who Fought an Empire: Sarah Aaronsohn and Her Nili Spy Ring (Potomac Books: 2018), and the historical novel Two Men Before the Storm: Arba Crane's Recollection of Dred Scott And the Supreme Court Case That Started the Civil War (Greenleaf Book Group: 2015). He is currently an opinion contributor for The Hill. Today, Gregory and I talk about Kennan, his many trips to Siberia, and the effect his journalism had on American views of Russia. It's a way to organize the data in your mind and in your organization into a simple approach to getting to a destination. In this classic episode of “The Alden Report” I spoke with Clint Greenleaf, who founded Greenleaf Book Group, an independent publishing company that was featured on both the Inc 500 and Inc 5000 list. Greenleaf represented thousands of titles and produced 30 NY Times bestsellers. Working off of the successful business model that he had created with his publishing company, Greenleaf moved forward to create brands such as Homeplate Peanut Butter, a healthier alternative to traditional peanut butters that was designed with pro athletes in minds and is served in every major league clubhouse. Young women who step into male-dominated careers rarely find female mentors to look up to. So it's hard to know - do you need a thick skin? Do you need to suppress aspects of their femininity, to succeed? In this episode, I'm joined by Tanya Hall, CEO of the Greenleaf Book Group. She shares how she has navigated her field and ascended to the top without shedding parts of herself as a woman. She lives the example of being an individual who values her emotions and connects with her feminine parts. I was thrilled to get her as a part of this show, being a female publishing leader, an influencer, and a conduit to getting stories and ideas out into the world. We delve into her childhood, her move from Los Angeles to Austin, Texas, her experience with other women in her field, and why accepting and using your feminine strengths can help you accomplish great feats.   Episode Highlights: Tanya's upbringing as a middle child Her parents' traditional relationship dynamics  How she and her sister rebelled against stereotypical gender roles The lack of female mentors growing up How some women feel competitive toward other women How Tanya pivoted from a career in television into publishing Gender balance in media and how the powerful women there inspired her Why women are great at storytelling Unlearning the idea that women are less valuable than men How Tanya rose from distribution manager to CEO Why working with a sense of purpose creates job satisfaction What a hybrid publisher is and its numerous benefits The pros and cons of self-publishing The upsides and risks of traditional publishing How she came up with her book “Ideas, Influence and Income” Self-acceptance and how it can help you become the best in your field How impostor syndrome still happens to CEOs How being a single mom added to her work stress Flow: The key to career and family balance  Her biggest setbacks and how she got herself back up Reharnessing negative emotions and making them work for you Advice for young women who want to chase their passions   About the guest: Tanya lives in Austin, Texas with her two daughters and three big dogs. She and the girls have developed a tight-knit bond, being proud and supportive of each other. Initially from LA, she moved to Austin Texas because was impressed with its diverse and accepting culture. She found it a great place to raise her daughters. It was only after moving in that she realized that she needed to find a job. She then found an opening for a distribution manager in Greenleaf Book Group. Telling herself she'll find a better paying job as soon as they become settled, she started her career within the company. But pretty soon, she found herself loving her work. Although her tasks started out as primarily listing books in different databases, the part where she worked with authors sparked a fire in her. She fell in love with how passionate they were. Knowing that she had a huge impact on making their ideas happen, gave her a strong sense of purpose. Fast forward many years later, she's now the CEO of the company. Her discovery that she has a knack for launching and branding authors and the fact that she is an awesome builder played a fundamental role to her rise in ranks. She also learned to work with, instead of fight against, her individuality. She loves to write, think, and analyze during mornings and becomes more verbal during the afternoons. Her staff and her daughters are well aware that when inspiration strikes her, she will not hesitate to write it down and act on it even if it's past office hours. Notes: 0:00 to 1:46 - Ashland Opening Remarks and Intro of AprilJo Murphy 1:47 to 5:32 - Introduction of Self and Topic Establish a voice and think about how your tone can modulate Voice and tone are separate, tone falls under the umbrella of voice Voice is all of the communication you have with all the people inside and outside of your company (email, memo, blog, tweet, logo - it's visual and textual) Even if you are a one-person company, your brand voice is not your personal voice. It will make your brand voice more effective if you think about it as a separate entity Think about brand voice as something you can step in and out of You can create brand guidelines for others to share the voice of your company 5:33 to 11:40 - Why You Want to Separate Your Brand Voice from Your Personal Voice and How to Find Your Brand Voice It will focus your efforts and allow for you to have quality control It will become a recruiting tool for you Notice patterns you use in communications/content as part of your brand voice Analyze communication that was successful so you can emulate it again Think about the brand voice you want to have Identify three or four characteristics (adjectives) of your company (i.e. we are friendly, authentic, humanitarian) What do these mean to you and your client in your particular situation Handout 1 (attached below) Overview and Discussion Conversational as a buzzword with an example Human touch in example is what she means for tone 11:41 to 19:42 - Tone Defined Think about emotional intelligence Your voice is always consistent, but how you talk to someone in a specific situation is your tone and that will modulate Because it modulates, it sounds human Can be the words you choose, the metaphors you use Comes across in design elements, examples are: Don't F it Up The Best Team Wins The Business of You Tone is where the emotional atmosphere of a situation lives, you can shape how people interact with you Second and Third Handouts Discussed (Attached below) How do you take a negative interaction and help it work for your company overall 19:43 to 21:38 - Ashland Closing Remarks Like this podcast? After selling his publishing company, my guest, Clint Greenleaf recalls being on flight to Hawaii with his wife and two young daughters. They were sitting in first class and Clint peaked behind his seat to check on the girls. That’s when he had a revelation:   “I thought, I spent a lot of time in the back of the plane... and if I’m not careful, my kids are going to miss the important lessons it took to get here.”   With that, Clint set out to learn all he could about teaching kids financial literacy and the value of money. From his research, Clint developed practical strategies—a set of tools in the toolbag—that he and his wife use with their children. We talk about what they do and more in this episode.       Topics discussed in this episode:   Meet Clint (1:40) Build a network of knowledge (5:27) Questions about money for you and your spouse (7:02) What led to writing the books? (9:37) Give, Save, Spend (12:20) Using a family business for training (15:58) Allowance: Clint’s perspective (21:22) Making financial concepts fun and easy to understand (27:27) Entrepreneurship and financial literacy (31:35) What has worked for Clint’s family? (38:09) The proof will be in the pudding (41:50) Awareness is key (45:00) How to connect with Clint (47:19) Bonus questions (48:00)   Guest Bio: Clint Greenleaf began his career as a staff accountant at Deloitte and Touche and earning his CPA.  After writing his own book, Clint started Greenleaf Book Group, which grew into one of the industry’s leading independent book publishers and distributors.  Representing over 30 NY Times and Wall Street Journal best sellers, the company was named one of INC's fastest-growing companies in America (INC 500 in 2006 and INC 5000 from 2007-2012).  Greenleaf Book Group was also certified by WorldBlu as a “Most Democratic Workplace” for transparent policies, employee engagement and leadership.  Clint sold the company in 2011, and stayed on as CEO and Chairman until 2014.  His newest venture is HomePlate Peanut Butter, an all-natural, no-stir peanut butter that is connected with professional baseball and other sports teams.  After completing two rounds of fundraising and generating rapid store growth, the brand is positioned for significant growth in the grocery space.   Clint speaks to various audiences throughout the world about the benefits of instilling financial literacy in people of all ages. Clint helps companies bring financial education into their organizations to help grow the bottom line, and his clients walk away with an understanding of how financial education of all employees can help advance a company. He works with families, home offices and financial advisors to create a framework for building financial competency in children so they grow up to be responsible adults, capable of managing their own money. Clint’s audiences learn the value of imparting financial knowledge to others and improving their own understanding about money, and they gain practical tools to be able to put that into action in their own lives and organizations.   Clint works with organizations around the globe as an author and speaker on entrepreneurship, financial education and innovation.  He is a regular guest on Fox Business Network, and his articles have appeared in American Express OPEN, Inc.com, CNN Money, and The Huffington Post. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Inc. Magazine, Fox, CNBC, CNN, MSBNC, Forbes, Entrepreneur, and others. ABOUT GAR LASALLE Gar LaSalle is an award-winning author and filmmaker, a physician, a sculptor, and a creator who has been honored widely in the fine arts and medical communities for his leadership and creativity. He is the author of two award-winning historical fiction novels. Widow Walk, published in 2014 by Greenleaf Book Group, won multiple awards including the Eric Hoffer Award for Literature, the eLit Silver Medal, the IndieReaders Award for Best Novel, and the San Francisco Book Festival Grand Jury Prize for General Fiction. Isthmus, the second book in the saga, was published in 2015 and was a finalist for the PNWWA Nancy Pearl award for literature.  His third novel, The Fairness of Beasts, is scheduled for release in 2017. ABOUT GAR'S BOOKS AND "THE WIDOW WALK SAGA" WIDOW WALK is based on the real events surrounding the revenge murder of Isaac Ebey, a prominent citizen who lived on Whidbey Island in the mid-1800s. Author Gar LaSalle combines his love of history with a compelling story of a woman's determination to find her kidnapped son. The novel vividly depicts those turbulent times, when the United States and Britain both attempted to control vast, fertile new lands in the Pacific Northwest and contain its native “aboriginal” populations. In Widow Walk, brave people fight to survive predation and the violent confrontations that inevitably accompany ambition and expansionism. This is a story of courage, character, and the emergence of those who endured. ABOUT THE LASALLE STORYTELLER AWARD This annual award recognizes outstanding work by an established or emerging author of fiction based in Washington State. The recipient receives a $10k grant to continue their work. The grant is awarded through a partnership between the Artist Trust and Gar LaSalle.

And it doesn't stop with just having solid financial practices in place, but must be accompanied with a culture of transparency and accountability to empower your employees for better decision making. Today's guest however takes the concept of being financially sound one step further, as he shares the importance of teaching your employees how to manage their own personal finances and the impact to not only their own life, but that of the organization. Mr. Clint Greenleaf, founder and CEO of Greenleaf Groups and founder of Greenleaf Book Group, speaks passionately about entrepreneurship and personal finances.
