Professor Ludovic Phalippou of The University of Oxford Said Business School talks through the problems with performance reporting in private equity, why so-called ‘democratisation' can lead to big problems for investors and why he's surprised by the latest media coverage of private equity interest in UK listed companies.
At the moment, imports of agricultural produce from Australia - like lamb and beef - are subject to tariffs. But the Government is keen to strike free trade deals and has now indicated those tariffs could be lowered. The farming industry is furious - saying a big increase in Australia meat imports could cripple British producers AND the meat’s produced to lower welfare standards. The Department for International Trade have told us 'Any deal we sign with Australia will include protections for the agriculture industry and will not undercut UK farmers'… the statement goes on 'typically, any tariff liberalisation is staged over time, with safeguards built in'. Nude selfies on the cliffs… children put on the backs of bulls… we’ve heard it all this week as we look at the explosion in visits to the countryside during the pandemic. Holkham Hall welcomes thousands of visitors every year - but the estate’s huge beach is also a National Nature Reserve and nesting site for rare little terns and ringed plover, and keeping the nests safe from dogs is a priority. And in Dorset, gardening clubs, schools and allotment holders are coming together to help bees. A web of wildlife corridors is being created around Bere Marsh Farm near Blandford Forum - which is run by the Countryside Restoration Trust - to help bee populations grow and spread. Presented by Sybil Ruscoe. Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol is Heather Simons.

Mental health and well being is a truly fragile thing... The Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is still in full gear and running until May 9th with an excellent choice of documentary cinema to dive into at a low price over at HotDocs.ca. On this episode we take a look at the film 'Any Given Day' from filmmaker Margaret Byrne as she follows three defendants through a specialized mental health prison probation program while sharing and dealing with her own struggles. This film shows struggles that are rarely seen and shines a light on how fragile the system for people with mental health issues can truly be. We got the distinct pleasure to sit down with Margaret to discuss how she got involved in the story, the flaws in the system and the things that we need to do better as a society...
'Any day that I get to talk about my child is a good day.' This is one of the many things that today's guest Jerry has learned from others when he has spoken to bereaved parents on his new podcast, 'The Nameless Minority.' 'Nameless' represents the idea that there is no word in the English language for a parent who lost his/her child. 'Minority' is used because as opposed to a hundred years or more ago, there are not nearly as many bereaved parents as there once were. It can make us feel isolated and alone. Jerry's daughter, Bella, suffered from cancer from 4 months of age until her death at age 6. Jerry says that he did not truly grieve for his daughter for the first 8 years after Bella died. He simply ignored it. He decided to start running. Jerry became an excellent runner, and running was a great distraction for him, but it soon became more than a distraction. It became an excuse to just push the grief away. Two years ago, however, it all came to a head and he felt the grief hit him. He still says that despite therapy, he is 'bad' at feeling his emotions and letting them out, but he has found that talking about his daughter and his experiences brings him comfort and healing. Jerry decided to start a podcast for grieving parents so that they, too, could share their stories with others. Others tend to look at Jerry a bit strangely when he tells people what his podcast is about. They wonder why he would want to talk to grieving parents all the time. It just seems like it would be so sad, but it is not a sad narrative that Jerry wants to tell. He wants to talk about the good times and the great ways that people can support each other. When Jerry talks about Bella, he tells people that he was 'blessed' with a terminally ill daughter, not that he had a young daughter who died of a brain tumor. Just a simple change in thinking like that help Jerry and others a bit more.

In this episode Rob talks with Henrik Frijs, Head of Sales & Marketing at EHS Data - a world-leading Environmental Data Management company providing environmental data systems to the mining industry. Henrik is an experienced environmental specialist who explains how mining companies can improve their environmental systems and processes through some of their technology, products and solutions. KEY TAKEAWAYS The main industries being served by EHS's data system are landfill organisations, which has now grown organically into the mining sector. Data is currently being used effectively to serve environmental concerns in sectors such as power generation, metal processing, smelting and other related industries. All mining has an effect upon the environment. It is the responsibility of the operation, under regulation, to adhere to the restoration and impact assessment of the production. Later, accurate reporting and measurement is crucial. Operations must seek to replace the more manual procedures that are currently in place. These restrict growth, and can never be an all-encompassing solution. BEST MOMENTS 'Mining is the main industry that we serve' 'Any mining activity is a disturbance to the environment' 'Data can only provide a platform' 'When we engage with a mining company, we know very well what it is, and can come with advice on how to manage the data' VALUABLE RESOURCES Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes EHS Data - https://ehsdata.com/tag/henrik-frijs/ Henrik Frijs LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/henrik-m-frijs-1b09333/?originalSubdomain=uk ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. This has been a week, hasn't it? I had so much more to talk about but alas, I think listening to me for one hour is way too long as it is, I wouldn't dream of pushing my luck any further. I had a hard time articulating my thoughts about the censorship that is happening - it's unbelievable to me that America has reached this point. Is this the beginning of the end for our Constitution? Lyn talks to Veronica Vazeri, the founder of The School of Human Connection, about the 3 myths that people believe when it comes to building lasting relationships. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is no formal education when it comes to building relationships and connection. Therefore, it is vital that we as parents or mentors strive to be role models for those we influence and guide. The initial burst of love we feel, and which spurs us on to continue a relationship, cannot always sustain that relationship through difficult times. We must always seek to grow and to source the tools we need to help us overcome any challenges. Couples who stand the test of time are the ones who face issues together, who do not apportion blame to the other, and who share responsibility for their own actions. Relationship councillors and experts are equipped in dealing with a variety of issues. Therefore, if you need to seek help, always source an impartial professional rather than involving family and friends. BEST MOMENTS 'We've got to be bridging that gap' 'Any great relationship is going to go through challenges' 'There's never just one partner to blame' 'It's like finding the one who can take you on a journey and provide the advice that's applicable to your situation' VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Spotify Stitcher ABOUT THE GUEST Veronica Vazeri is a Relationship & Communication Mentor. This morning Dermot & Dave received an email from a listener who was complaining about getting getting any "alone time" with his missus during lockdown. The email read " Hi Dermot and Dave. I've got an issue that some of your listeners might relate to. So Covid19 has put me, my wife and our 4 kids back in our box and we are coping quite well. But NOBODY seems to be addressing the fact that us parents are now under the constant 24hr monitoring of our 4 snotty, horrible little monkeys. Let me tell you now that 'love' is not in the air. When oh WHEN can we get some US time... if ya know what I mean. I suggested to my wife that we go out into to the shed and, I dunno, 'make a bird box or something?' but my wife reckons that's not rosemantic at all. Surely there is somewhere I could send my kids for a half an hour or 3 minutes or the likes. Any suggestions would be urgently appreciated. Thanks guys. Stavros, the Italian Scallion." This lead to a huge response from listeners, who revealed to Dermot how they were getting creative during lockdown. Episode 67 of Gaming Couch! I must admit I had a bit of a funk these last two weeks. Very busy and stressful with work and traveling over the weekends. Last week I just didn't want to make an episode. I didn't have it in me and it wouldn't have been good quality. So I disappeared for a bit. Now I'm back and on schedule. This week I wanted to make a different kind of list. I hang around facebook and joined the All Things D&D group and really enjoy. One day I saw a post asking 'Any advice for a new DM?'. Well, that got me thinking. I got what ended up being 9 tips for new DMs. It was 7 but I thought of 2 on the spot. Improving is the best you know? Sit back and enjoy! I'm glad to have you back for another listen. Smartboy P.S, one day I will think of something witty to put in the P.S section.

Joe Quinlan of Merrill Lynch and Bank of America Private expects a truce, rather than any 'grand deal' on China, but despite those concerns he believes the market is headed higher so he suggests that investors view downturns as buying opportunities -- 'especially in large-cap, dividend-paying stocks' -- for the foreseeable future. Also on the show, Gene Peroni of Peroni Portfolio Advisors expects the Dow Jones Industrial Average to hit 33,000 before the current market cycle ends, which he says could be 18 to 24 months away. "A somewhat self-aware Zigzag was heard badmouthing, 'Any-thing called ‘linear’ or ‘cyclical’ is the story of ego time and crooked by nature.' The Scribbles squabbled, scribing a circular time scrabble, while the snickering dot of ego-thought created more perceptions in dualities jots."

She now 25, and has dedicated her life to proving that prediction wrong. Every day, Sophie continues to fight CF through a combination of her love for fitness and a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Sophie’s life so far has her shown that rather than sitting back and accepting the views of others, it really is possible to challenge those expectations through dedication, self-belief and courage. Sophie: Committed to living life to the fullest, I’m always pushing myself to achieve my greatest ambitions. I firmly believe that we should lead positive lives we’re passionate about, that we should never give up, and that we should always do what makes us happy. We should also go on new adventures, trying new sports and challenging ourselves to see what our mind and body can do both through things that scare you and excite you. After all, absolutely any dream is possible if you have the courage to pursue it. http://www.sophiegraceholmes.com/ http://www.sophiegraceholmes.com/new-blog-1

Un any on poc haurà canviat però moltes coses segurament hauran evolucionat.

After growing up in Berlin and Hamburg, she lived in Paris for almost two decades, pursuing ballet and underground theater, translating American women authors and writing cultural reviews for the German radio and press. Stendhal has published several books in Germany and in the United States, three of them co-authored with her life companion Kim Chernin. Her articles and essays have appeared internationally. In this episode, Stacy and answer a reader question about creating or preventing allergies when introducing foods to children. Click here to listen in iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 241: Can You Create or Prevent a Food Allergy? Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Hello, listeners! Stacy got a special gift from Sarah and Vital Proteins! Sarah talks about her collaborative effort with Vital Proteins to create Dr. Sarah Ballantyne’s Collagen Veggie Blend. Sarah and Stacy share what they like to add to make a Collagen Veggie Blend smoothies Stacy talks about her experience so far with trying to give up coffee. Stacy puts out a no-coffee challenge to all the listeners. Sarah talks a little about filming with Micky and Angie from Autoimmune Wellness, last week, for the AIP Certified Coach practitioners program that will be launching later this year. Sarah dishes on the break down of the price of Collagen Veggie Blend vs making your own. Brooke asks: "My question is for my baby daughter, who turned one yesterday. Today we had her 12 month check up with our pediatrician who has a standard American medical practice and the pediatrician was more than a little hesitant to put her stamp of approval on my daughter's diet. Besides transitioning to formula around 6 months, my daughter has had only Paleo-compliant foods via baby led weaning. Her meals consist of grass-fed meats, wild seafood, pastured eggs, all the fruits and veggies, healthy doses of healthy fats like EVOO, avocado, ghee, coconut milk, almond milks and flours, etc. My pediatrician advised me that I needed to introduce cow's milk, grains (including gluten grains) and legumes (including peanuts) into my daughter's diet as soon as possible, to avoid CREATING possible food allergies. Her reasoning behind this advice is the new study (source...?) that was recently released about introducing kids to peanuts early to avoid severe peanut allergies later. My question is, do I need to do this? I thought one was born with food allergies, and cannot be created from abstaining from a certain food. Also, what are the nutritional benefits, if any, in giving my daughter these foods that could have potential inflammatory reactions? My doctor seemed to be mostly concerned with calcium, iron, Vit D and B12. Both my husband and I are gluten and dairy intolerant, so can I assume our offspring will be too, at some point in her life? If you could address the issue of food allergies in young children and whether we can create or prevent certain allergies by introducing/abstaining from certain foods at a certain age, I'd greatly appreciate it! Love to hear your thoughts on the recent peanut allergy study, too!" (18:14) New Peanut Allergy Study, Stacy gives her thoughts on the study and talks about her own experience with her kids. Sarah talks about immune tolerance and more on the different ways the immune system reacts. Stacy and Sarah talked last week with Dr. Terry Walhs on why it's important to look at these studies and not dismiss the science because it's not in line with personal beliefs. Use it as an opportunity to take a deeper look at a topic. Sarah talks about a gluten study that had a similar idea, and points out that many of the babies in that were still being breast fed. Breast feeding can create a healthy gut microbiome, and that can mediate allergic reactions. Not enough scientific evidence to strongly support either side of this question. Her takeaways are to focus on nutrient density and supporting a healthy gut micobiome. To the second part of the question, 'Any nutritional benefits to these foods?' NO! Grains, dairy, and legumes have no unique nutrients that you couldn't find in other whole foods. Sarah suggests adding organ meats to the list of foods this family is already feeding their baby. Stacy talks more of her experiences with her own kids and food choices. Stacy and Sarah share about how they talk with their own children's doctors. Rate and Review us! Goodbye! Outro (49:41)
