In our Season 3 return of #JCsMusicology, we take a trip through the making of Prince's Lovesexy album. 1987 was a big year for Prince, with the release of Sign O The Times, opening Paisley Park and establishing a new band, he was set to cap the year off with the release of The Black Album. After a drug-induced epiphany and a new acquaintance, Prince cancelled the release, sending thousands of copies for destruction. He then commences work on its rebuttal and replacement, Lovesexy. Using rarely heard early versions and unheard session tapes, we explore the makings of Prince's spiritual declaration. Interview Credits: 07.5 WBLS, MTV Presents Prince, The Electrifying Mojo, Oprah, Entertainment Tonight, VH-1 To 1, CNN Cover Version, BET Talkback, Fast Forward, Larry King, MTV News, NBC Today Show, The View, TROS, BET - Words and Music, CBS Early Show, CNBC, Much More Music, Tavis Smiley and The Biz. Manny Waks was 11 years old when he was first sexually abused. Raised in the ultra-Orthdaox sect of Judaism known as Chabad, he lacked the education or vocabulary to understand what was going on. By the time he was studying for his bar mitzvah, he was molested by a second perpetrator. Both men were members of staff at his school - the Yeshiva Centre in Melbourne, Australia. In this searingly honest, compelling and sometimes angry conversation with Olly, he recalls how he was groomed, abused, disbelieved, and shunned - and recounts the moment he decided, aged 18, to turn his back on Hasidic Judaism for ever - and join the Israeli Defense Force.(In 2013, Manny's second abuser, David Cyprys, was sentenced to eight years for sexually abusing Manny and eight other boys. Manny is now CEO of Kol v'Oz, established in Israel in 2016 to prevent child sexual abuse in Jewish communities globally. His book, ‘Who Gave You Permission?’, is out now).Elsewhere this week, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart explains why ‘battle royale’ is the gaming format du jour, why China are investing in ‘feacal recognition’, and why Drake would rather be on Twitch than The Graham Norton Show. Plus, he reveals how he fared in his challenge to take up Para Ice Hockey (he didn’t make Team GB...)If you’ve got a challenge to set Ollie Peart for next week’s show, submit it via the Feedback page on our website, ModernMann.co.ukMeanwhile, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox - fresh from checking out the ‘vac-cube’ at Eroticon - advises a listener who wants to spend longer, much longer, going down on his girlfriend. An evening of great songs in alphabetical order!
This is it. Here we complete the 26th mile of the Chirdonathon, cross the finish line, and receive the oxygen and hydration we so desperately require. (I know, the analogy doesn’t really work, but I’m going with it. Except not anymore. You’re welcome.) Jeff recently moved to Ohio. Greg apparently has opinions of Ohio drivers. And Jeff, in a whirlwind of quotable genius, utters a series of bumper sticker phrases pointing a harsh finger at the state whose motto should be, “Even With God, All Things Are Assuredly NOT Possible.” Ohio: Barely Not Juggalo. My fiancé: Ohio is killing her. Ohio: Count the cars that don’t have a bumper. At all. Ohio: If your seat belt clicks and your car hasn’t exploded, you can drive that death trap. Pennyslvania, and Pittsburgh in particular, wasn’t left unscathed. Heather here coins the phrase: The Pittsburgh Left: You Must Hate Your Passenger. (Greg agrees.) And to complete the topical smorgasbord of non sequitur cultural taboo, we discuss Prince, Bill Cosby, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, white rappers, and, yet again, Frankenhooker. Fun. Times. We present to you, “I Drink 2 4get…(Chirdonathon, pt 7).” And the music…still Prince. We’ll begin with “Pope,” and end with a killer live version of, “Alphabet Street.” And in the episode you’ll hear, “Gett Off,” “CREAM,” and “Sexy Mother Fucker.” Shaking that ass, shaking that ass, shaking that ass. It’s still hard to imagine he’s gone. -G
