pWotD Episode 3089: Ace Frehley Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 402,541 views on Thursday, 16 October 2025 our article of the day is Ace Frehley.Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley (, FRAY-lee; April 27, 1951 – October 16, 2025) was an American musician who was the original lead guitarist, occasional lead vocalist, and founding member of the rock band Kiss. He invented the persona of The Spaceman (a.k.a. Space Ace) and played with the group from its inception in 1973 until his departure in 1982. After leaving Kiss, Frehley formed his own band named Frehley's Comet and released two albums with the group. He subsequently embarked on a solo career, which was put on hold when he rejoined Kiss in 1996 for a highly successful reunion tour.Frehley's second tenure with Kiss lasted until 2002, when he left at the conclusion of what was originally purported to be the band's farewell tour. His most recent solo studio album, 10,000 Volts, was released in 2024. Guitar World magazine ranked him as the 14th Greatest Metal Guitarist of All Time.Outside Kiss, Frehley achieved further commercial success and popularity, with his 1978 eponymous debut solo studio album achieving platinum status. His 1987 eponymous debut studio album with his Frehley's Comet band was also a big success. Frehley is noted for his aggressive, atmospheric, and melodic guitar playing and is also known for the use of many "special effects" guitars, including a Gibson Les Paul guitar that emits smoke from the neck humbucker pickup and produces spinning pyrotechnics and a custom Les Paul that emits light based on song tempo. Frehley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 as a member of Kiss. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 04:42 UTC on Friday, 17 October 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Ace Frehley on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kendra.

We made it to fifty, feeling for the Flying Dutchman, birthday greetings to Mr. Keach, a demonic fridge, an alcoholic couch, happy endings, a listeners question, Tom Cruise needs to stop it, my so-called breakdancing life, a real-life Tron, video arcade memories, a bad purchase at The Sharper Image, a somewhat shattering experience outside the grocery store, waiting for DoorDash, the tiresome trifecta of Mark Zuckerberg/Joe Rogan/Elon Musk, more psych hospital stories, idiotic injuries, a bad Swiss accent, the damaged and awesome Russell Crowe, and my affair with Alanis Morissette. Stuff mentioned: Risky Business (1983), Losin' It (1983), Tron (1982), Discs of Tron (1983), Dragon's Lair (1983), Space Ace (1983), Breakin' (1984), Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo (1984), Saturday Night Live "The French Chef" (December 9, 1978), The Exorcism (2024), Frasier (1993-2004), Alanis Morissette "Head Over Feet" (1995), Alanis Morissette Jagged Little Pill (1995), and Alanis Morissette "You Oughta Know" (1995).
Retro gaming is making a comeback, and it's not just for nostalgia's sake. Avram Piltch discusses his son's interest in retro games and how it has sparked a renewed interest in old consoles and games. Avram's son, who is only 12 years old, is more interested in retro games than in the latest games. He watches videos about old games, quizzes his father on trivia about old consoles and games, and gets excited about playing old games in their original format.Retro gaming is in the spotlightAvram discusses his visit to a retro game festival in New York, where he shares pictures of his son looking at old consoles and games. The festival had every major console in historical order, starting from the Magnavox Odyssey, and attendees could play on them. Avram also came across a tool called Taz bot, which automates gameplay on certain old consoles like the GameCube. This tool allows players to program joystick moves and button presses to play the perfect game. While some may question the purpose of using a tool like Taz bot to automate gameplay, it highlights the growing interest in retro gaming and the desire to experience old games in new ways. The festival also featured old consoles like the RCA Studio II, Atari Lynx, PSP, Xbox 360, and original Game Boy, showcasing the variety of retro gaming options available. One of the key reasons for the resurgence of retro gaming is the unique experience it offers. Playing old games on original consoles and CRT TVs provides a different feel and look compared to modern gaming setups. Additionally, there is a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the history of gaming that comes with playing retro games.Furthermore, retro gaming is not just about reliving the past but also about preserving gaming history. Events like retro game festivals and tools like Taz bot help keep old consoles and games alive for future generations to enjoy. The interest in retro gaming is not limited to older gamers but is also seen in younger generations like Avram's son, who are discovering the charm of old games.Old school gaming nostalgia festIn addition, Avram discusses a wide range of gaming devices, from the Space Ace and Dragon's Lair DVD games to the Virtual Boy and N64 playing Banjo-Kazooie. He also highlights unique consoles like the Game Tank, a homebrew console with its own set of games and cartridges, and the Dreamcast with its quirky peripherals like the fishing rod game. One of the most interesting aspects of the event was old educational systems like the Socrates and Sega pods, as well as handheld games like Merlin. The hosts also explore the evolution of gaming technology, from the Commodore PET and K-Pro computers to the Amstrad with its tape drive built into the keyboard.Avram and Scott share their experiences playing retro games and exploring the history of gaming, highlighting the creativity and innovation of early game developers. They also discuss the appeal of retro gaming for both seasoned gamers and newcomers, emphasizing the nostalgia and sense of nostalgia that comes with revisiting classic games and consoles.Controller matters for retro gamingAvram and Scott discuss the importance of controllers in retro gaming. They highlight the significance of using the original controllers that were designed for specific gaming consoles, as opposed to using modern controllers or emulators. They emphasize that the controller matters greatly in the gaming experience, as it affects the feel and gameplay of the retro games.Avram mentions examples of retro gaming controllers, such as the Atari joystick and the wheel controller for Atari Pong games. He discusses how the design and functionality of these controllers contribute to the overall gaming experience and how using the original controllers can enhance the nostalgia and authenticity of playing retro games.Additionally, the pair touches upon the idea of modifying retro gaming controllers to work with modern devices, such as installing USB connections in the controllers to use them with newer gaming systems. They explore the technical aspects of retrofitting retro controllers and the potential challenges involved in the process.Furthermore, Scott discusses the significance of Nintendo releasing wireless NES and SNES controllers for the Switch to enhance the gameplay experience of playing classic games on modern consoles. He emphasizes that the design and functionality of the controllers are integral to the gaming experience and that using the original controllers can enhance the overall gameplay and nostalgia of retro gaming.

Unless you've been living under a big red Martian rock, you've likely heard that NASA's Mars Sample Return mission is in trouble. The robotic program has its roots in the 1960s, when NASA started thinking about sending robots to fetch Mars soil even before Mariner 4's first flyby of the planet. The Russians pondered it as well, as the Chinese and Japanese are today. The problem? It's really hard, with multiple spacecraft, possibly on different launches, rendezvousing around the Red Planet to accomplish. And then there are the concerns about the safety of returning possible pathogens to Earth (that said, I could use an extra tentacle). But the showstopper, as usual, is cost—and NASA's not happy. We invited the original Space Ace reporter, Leonard David, to join the discussion. Headlines: NASA gives green light to Dragonfly, a nuclear-powered helicopter mission to Saturn's moon Titan, set to launch in 2028 and arrive in 2034 New images from the Perseverance rover reveal the crash site of the Ingenuity helicopter on Mars, showing scattered debris and broken rotor blades NASA continues to study the Orion spacecraft's heat shield, which experienced more erosion than expected during the Artemis 1 mission, raising concerns for future crewed missions Main Topic: Mars Sample Return Mission Leonard David expresses frustration with NASA's recent announcement of significant cost increases and delays for the Mars Sample Return mission NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated that the current estimated cost of $11 billion is too high and called for innovative ideas from industry and academia to reduce costs and accelerate the timeline They discuss the scientific importance of returning Martian samples to Earth but question whether the current approach is the most effective way to search for life on Mars Leonard suggests that advancements in miniaturized instruments could allow for more comprehensive life detection experiments directly on the Martian surface, reducing the need for sample return The conversation touches on the potential for international collaboration and competition in Mars exploration, with China, Japan, and Russia planning their own missions Rod highlights the critical role of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Mars exploration and expresses concern about the potential loss of expertise if the MSR mission is scaled back or cancelled The TWiS crew concludes by emphasizing the need for a clear, sustainable strategy for Mars exploration that balances scientific objectives, technological capabilities, and budgetary realities Hosts: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik Guest: Leonard David Download or subscribe to this show at https://twit.tv/shows/this-week-in-space. Greetings, and welcome to Episode 71! In this one, Brian gives a rundown on an arcade, talks about Space Ace, and gives you some thoughts from the road. If you would like to contact the show, you can send an email at arcadeaddictbrian@gmail.com or you can leave a voicemail for the show at 734-623-0832. The show also has a Facebook page, and is also on Instagram, Twitter, Threads, Bluesky, TikTok (when I have videos) and Tumblr. All of these links can be found at https://linktr.ee/arcadeaddictbrian. I am also putting the back catalog on Youtube as well, a little bit at a time. Just search for arcadeaddictbrian or the podcast, and you will find them! You can help the show by leaving a five-star review wherever you listen to it, which helps other people find it. If you want to help the show directly, go to https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coaa and click on the Donate button. For as little as a dollar a month, you can help the show develop further as a podcast, as I use those funds for things directly related to the show (buying podcasting and streaming equipment, and funding arcade runs to new locations to review). My deepest thanks to Kevin Hoffman and Benjamin Broedel for their continuing support! Without your help, I would not be in the position I'm in! And now, I'm streaming live on Twitch! Twitch.tv/arcadeaddictbrian. If you're a listener to the show, please do me a solid and drop me a follow over there. That helps grow the stream, and who knows, maybe I might become a big-time streamer! A guy can hope, right?? Discord server coming soon! Hope to hear from you soon, and good gaming out there! KISS is one of the most legendary bands in the history of rock n roll. From their iconic makeup to their bombastic stage shows to the marketing and licensing of every product under the sun, KISS has been a part of popular culture for half a century. The self-titled debut album, KISS, didn't grab everyone's attention out of the gate, however. While they had some killer riffs supplied by original guitarist Ace Frehley, some funky bass from Gene Simmons, swinging drumming from Peter Criss and superstar vocals from Paul Stanley, the band were still forming their sound and identity. In fact, the sales of the album were so slow that Casablanca Records chief Neil Bogart cajoled the band into recording a 50s cover, Kissin Time, which he thought would help boost sales as a single. Even though Kissin Time was added to every copy of KISS after the first 100,000 or so, it didn't help generate more sales. But their reputation as a great live band had KISS winning fans around the nation. And while KISS wouldn't capture that live sound until ALIVE! a couple of years later, this album has some great tracks which are still KISS classics today like Deuce, Strutter, Cold Gin and Black Diamond. We give it our usual track x track evaluation and throw in lots of KISS tidbits. As a special bonus, we have included a clip from Space Ace himself, Ace Frehley. As Ace recently spoke with Paul Stephenson of VRP Rocks (a good friend of Ugly American Werewolf in London), Paul asked Ace a question from The Wolf about the timing of his new solo release 10,000 Volts and how it's coming out almost 50 years to the day from the release of KISS. Ace may not answer the question we asked but it's amazing that Paul asked if for us and the audio is included somewhere in the episode - you'll have to listen to hear from Ace!! In this episode of the SNES Podcast Greg and Joe explore the SNES version of Space Ace! A 'reimagining' of the classic 1984 Laserdisc arcade game, the game was created to feel like the arcade game and yet have it run smoothly on the SNES. The programmers succeed, but Joe and I disagree as to if this is a good thing or not. Tune in to listen to our discussion! Yes, there are still some practical uses for laser discs. Here are a few examples: Archiving and preservation: Laser discs are still a good option for archiving and preserving video content. They offer superior video and audio quality to VHS tapes and are less susceptible to damage from wear and tear. This makes them a good choice for storing important historical footage or other video content that you want to keep for the long term. Educational purposes: Laser discs can be used for educational purposes, such as teaching foreign languages or providing interactive learning experiences. They can also be used to store large datasets of information, such as scientific data or medical records. Audiophile listening: Laser discs offer superior audio quality to other optical disc formats, such as CDs and DVDs. This makes them a good choice for audiophiles who want to listen to music in the highest possible quality. Retro gaming: Laser discs were used to store some early video games, such as Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. These games are still popular with retro gamers, and laser discs are the only way to play them in their original format. It is important to note that laser discs are not as widely used as they once were. They have been largely replaced by newer optical disc formats, such as DVDs and Blu-rays. However, they still have some practical uses in certain niche applications.
“Lead on, adventurer. Your quest awaits!” Forty years ago our eyes were blown from their sockets as they witnessed what appeared to be Disney cartoon quality graphics arrive in the arcades. Of course, we soon found out that the reality of actually playing these LaserDisc games wasn't perhaps what we initially dreamed, yet still Rick Dyer and Don Bluth's Dragon's Lair (and to a lesser extent, sci-fi sequel Space Ace) would become legends in their own right. Leon, Chris Worthington and Jesse join Dirk and Dexter on their animated escapades, and along with contributions from the Cane and Rinse community, remember the many, many direct ports and peculiar - sometimes incredible - conversions to home machines. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_569.mp3 Music featured in this issue:1. Special guest Brian, the mastermind behind the “My Weekly Mixtape” podcast, joins Ben this week for an episode steeped in their childhood nostalgia! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.
